  1. It seems ideal, even if my main fear is the needing of a complete backup (for ex if i loose my laptop or if it goes out of order). I cannot stop working for more than one day.

I have a new Toshiba satellite as laptop, do i need to buy a toshiba hard disk or can i use a cheaper one. Can you suggest any good link for the right hard disk + case?

I've found this NEW Toshiba 2,5 USB 1.1/2.0, 40Gb, 4200RPM, transfer until 480Mb/s on ebay for 105 euro (postage included), it seems the right one, what do you think?

Just for curiosity, is the girl in your avatar real? She seems a "real doll". :o

Well, with only 8gb of files, you can easily copy all of them each night onto the removable disc.

If time is critical to you, could you get up and running quickly in case you have to wipe and reinstall everything? For example, using Norton Ghost to make a complete backup of all your system settings is going to be quicker than having to reinstall windows, then install all your applications. Your data is going to be protected by copying to the removable, but your apps will not.

You can use any hard drive, not just Toshiba. Pick a decent brand (one that you have heard of) - http://www.cnet.com/ gives reviews. Your main concern should be reliability.

4200rpm is a slow disc speed - 7200rpm is a nicer speed and probably worth the little extra that it costs since you will be dumping big hunks of data at a time.

All the cases will be USB2.0 (USB 1.0 isn't fast enough to do it).

You can probably pick this up at Pantip/Fortune for a reasonable price. Plus, you can insist that they put it together for you and test it in front of you.

Well done on the avatar recognition. No fooling you.

  2. Lazy? :D Yep!

What kind of removeable hard drive do you suggest me for a nightfly backup?

    Firewire or USB? :o

I mean producer name and size (and price range) for 8Gbytes (or few Gbytes more and without AC adaptor, it must use the laptop "energy").

I would recommend USB as you will find a USB socket on every computer that you encounter. Firewire is much less common (especially on desktop PCs). It's handy if you want to carry all your docs with you somewhere.

I'd also recommend that you get a laptop hard disc. Sure, they are a bit more expensive that the full-sized version, but with the right case, they will fit in your trouser pockets. They also get all their power from the USB cable.

For the case, they are all much the same, get one that looks pretty and uses screws to hold it together. Make sure it uses the standard USB connectors (full sized plug to connect to the PC, mini USB to the case). No wierdo cables.

For the size, I'm a bit out of touch but probably the smallest size you will be able to buy is 40Gb. so, you'll have lots of spare room rattling around there.

You could set up different folders on the disk and back up to a different one each night (ie mon, tues, etc ). That way, if you screw up a file by mistake, you have the previous 7 day's worth of copies to go back to

  3. Simply unplug the hard drive when it's not being used to backup and the best cracker in the world won't be able to access it.

If you are running the appropriate anti-virus software, you won't get anything that will wipe out both the laptop copy and the removable copy at the same time. If you get something malicious, then you simpy don't plug in the removeable drive until your system is clean.

Also, you're going to find it very slow to back up 8Gb per night onto DVD - to the point where you'll probably get lazy and forget to do it. Plus, rewritable optical media is not the most reliable.

Personally, speaking, I would make a complete back up onto DVD (non-rewritable) now. Then simply follow a regime of burning CDs at regular intervals (probably monthly). The removeable hard drive is going to be perfectly fine for nightly backup.

  4. <deleted> really cares whether the beggar is there or not ?

Exactly Dr.P, please close this thread.

If the guy causes fear in you, by all means go and give him a good hiding.

I've been on the streets in Bangkok but recovered. I doubt if I could have recovered if my photo was spread all over the internet.

Give the guy a chance - have hope for the hopeless!

Are you helping him by making fun of him?

Have you read any of the thread?

    He doesn't need help.

    He's a con man, a fraud, a trickster, a liar, a cheat.

He's cheating kind-hearted people out of their money.

  5. Does anybody really think that this man is pulling a fast one on the public? Do you honestly believe that he goes home and counts his blessings all the while laughing at the gullible people who give him money? I don't care how much money he makes (and I can assure you he's not rolling in it) this man is not in a good situation. He is quite possibly mentally ill, or at the very least disturbed. Otherwise he wouldn't be doing what he's doing. If you don't want to give him money then fine, don't. And if you want to alert others to the fact that you think he's dishonest in his claims, then fine as well. But it is not right to post his picuture and dehumanize him. I'm not sure why such vitriol is directed his way, but it is a little scary to read some of these posts. Please have some compassion for a troubled man.

Do you have any evidence at all that he is mentally disabled?

Because I am quite happy to carry on believing that he is not disabled.

And I am happy to believe that he has no moral problems with trying to obtain money by deception from kind-hearted people.

And for those reasons, I am quite happy for him to be reviled here.

  6. How many here have been to Nana plaza?

How would you like it if your photo was put in your local newspaper back home with the heading " Illegal Sex-Pat Whoremonger lets kick him to <deleted> for lowering Thai people's opinion about of the rest of the law abiding expats"

Leave the poor guy alone. Maybe he's sick, in which case he should go back to his home country. But we don't know his circumstances, do we?

If I were wandering around Nana Plaza, with a sign that read 'I am an illegal sex-pat whoremonger' then I would not be too upset if the newspaper printed that photo, complete with an article that said that I were an illegal sex-pat whoremonger.

Furthermore, if the newspaper discovered that I was stealing money from charity tins to fund my illegal sex-pat whoremongering, I couldn't honestly complain if they expressed anger at my actions.

Just for the record: I am not an illegal sex-pat whoremonger and I don't steal from charity tins.

  7. Why all the stress?

He's not hurting anyone - just pass him by - what gives you the right to physically attack the guy?

I have no time for people like that either, but surely wouldn't abuse him for lowering himself. As for all the bravado about having been down and not stooping to begging - good for you, so now don't stoop to someone eles' level by condoning violence.

For the same reason that I don't like the Thai's who sell 'valuable' diamonds to tourists and tuk-tuk drivers who charge 500baht.

    He's conning people.

He's telling them he is in a bad situation and needs help to get out of it and back to his home- so they give money to help him.

In fact, he's just doing it as a source of income and isn't in that situation at all.

It's exactly the same was as if someone approaching you, collecting for Tsunami victims. Then they took the money to Starbucks and bought an espresso. And they did this to different people, everyday for a year.

  8. Are you able to do like he do??

I'm not, not for one day and not for 100 years! This is why I can feel a little respect for him and would feel happy to give him some money even if he is a trillionare and sits there for his entire life.

    I could do that.

I could also mug old ladies, con people and set up a fake charity

    But I don't, cause I have a little self-respect and diginity.

I also don't like to rip-off people and cheat them out of their money by lying.

  9. You're a genius! (and Phuketsam) :D

It looks like its a sticky key. I connected an external keyboard and the OVR turns on and off from the 'insert' key. It won't do that form my notebook keyboard.

Now for the 64k question. How do I fix it? Is there any spray I can buy? Should I try vacuuming it, or hair drying it??? :o

    Thank you for the compliment.

Usually, you can pop off these keys by simply using a paperclip as a lever. There might be some crap underneath it that causes it to get stuck. All you can really do is to clena it with a brush.

Try googling for 'sticky key' and your model number and see if they describe how to remove and replace it.

One sticky key usually means that the key is busted. More than 1 and it is likely that the whole keyboard needs to be replaced. It's actually very easy to swap out a keyboard, provided you can find the right replacement
