I just heard an unverified rumor he had a heart attack shortly after he was released and died.

Update: Just got a chance to speak with my friend who told me about this. She says that it was reported on the TV news last night. I did not see it myself.

and another came in a few hours later and said same

I can second that. I saw it on Home Cable News this morning.

  2. Go to where he is and smash him to bits.

Otherwise pay off the cops to have very serious words with him, or go cheap n file a report & restaining order, they'll give you a useless hotline to call.

Invest in an attack /guard dog like a Fila and have your lass buy u a shotgun, you'll be warned by the dog if anyone's sneaking about and it's cheaper than moving.

Better things to do in the day than worry about somchai the drunk.

  3. Maybe he was mad they were extorting money from his relatives after the temple abbot had already forgiven the property damage:

Pol.Col. Worapol Polmanee, superintendent of Pai Police Station, said the property damage and theft charges against the suspects were dropped after the temple abbot said he forgave the two men.

"We were waiting for the suspects' relatives to wire money from abroad to pay for damages at the temple," Pol.Col. Worapol said. "But then [Vladimir] used his knife to attack a police officer."

Question: If the property damages & theft charge were dropped, why would you be waiting for money from his relatives for the same reason.

Guess now Mr. Stabinov be a regular for boxing & maybe even target practice.

Still though, this place reaps what it sows, -thuggish Russian tourists & corrupt Thais, -a match made upon the River Styx. Just leave the monks out of it next time.

  4. I've just got back to Bangkok after travelling through there this morning at about 5 am. Loads of emergency vehicles. I was still passing ambulances in convoy going the opposite way lights ablazing on Mittraparp in Autthaya. It happened between Muak Lek and Saraburi on the Saraburi side of that massive TPI chemical/concrete plant.

that's a terrible section of road, the types of drivers there are a rough mix of heavy industry vehicles, cross country transport freight trucks, etc., etc.

RIP to the departed, and on Khao Pan Sa no less.

  5. If you want to excoriate me for overstay due to not leaving my wife's side as she lay in hospital near death, go ahead.

They'd just changed the visa rules and embassy staff in Laos that week and were claiming you needed proof of onward travel, no exceptions. We'd dumped all the cash on hospital bills.

Once the medical drama was over, I sorted my overstay.

You are aware that you could have gotten a medical extension for taking care of your wife.

2.25 In the case of medical treatment or convalescence or to look after a patient:

Permission will be granted for a period of not more than 90 days at a time.

    (1) Confirmation and request has been made by a physician responsible for the treatment. The Physician must describe the details of treatment and advised that the illness is a barrier for travelling.

    (2) In the case of looking after a patient, confirmation and request has been made by the physician responsible for the treatment or by an embassy or consulate.

    (3) Patient Carer, except parents, spouse, children, adopted children or children of spouse, shall be granted no more than 1 extra person.

yeah we tried that. as she was in hospital in Ta Bo, even though we lived in Udon, it became a mess between Udon immigration and Nong Khai.

both refused to acknowledge the letter of the law. too bad we didn't know the retired immigration officer then.

when we told her what happened she hit the roof.

it's not to say your advice is wrong. others should heed it.

but in our case it was clear immigration wasn't sympathetic in Issan like the might have been in a tourist area like Phuket or Bangkok.

in the end you'll never be able to say exactly what will happen (future tense). only what actually happened (past tense).

In my case I made a concerted effort at all times to handle my business here and prevailed.

In the case of those who want to wander high-traffic areas just down the street from immigration, perhaps they'd better think twice and sort their situation out before they end up deported.

That said, a lot of the idiots on here taking the holy high ground refuse to understand that you can be back here a day or so later even after overstaying 3 years.

There's a difference between that and say, shooting someone or commiting a drug offense.

Judging people you don't know is just plain stupid.

  6. I passed by there last night at the time that the police and rescue services had just arrived. The body was still laying in the midddle of the road, but covered already.

What I found strange however was that the were looking around with flash lights, as it was dark already, searching for in the banks of the road distances away from the body.

This was probably where they found the bank book. But what would indicate that there was a need to search the road banks 50 -100 meters away from the body?

just checking for more bodies, murder weapons, evidence. if a person is thrown from a moving vehicle or hit by them or otherwise in motion before hitting the ground, 100M isn't all that far.

  7. are you the Mother of the Father? a Mother would have this all figured out, if are the Mother and you don't have this all figured, then of course it's hospital time. and you need to get to a hospital (or baby clinic which is usually open after daytime hospital hours) that's good with babies, like today.

my wife is very dialed in on every single thing, right down to each and every mosquito bite, cough, sneeze and meal. I made the mistake of taking us travelling a few weeks ago, and sure enough baby got sick. she's a year old and they're better off in a stable environment where routine is in place, and minute by minute attention to detail is vital, even when they are fine.

doctors are in their clinic early and late, at 530pm. if you don't want the hassle of a hospital, and the endless travel and heat and mayhem which will also take a toll on the child, go to a baby clinic as near to home as you can.

Most doctors here make their "real money" by having a clinic. Reality is that there aren't enough good doctors, if somebody's really sick. It's not just like: "go to any baby clinic" you need to ask people who know where to go to. C'mon this is Thailand.

do you have a baby here? you have to do something right?

you'll know if the doctor is any good in the first few minutes if you have a brain. but my deduction in this case indicated that if the person was asking in a forum, they don't know anyone else personally to ask, therefore you state the clearest and most sensible route. which is to avoid lots of travel, heat, exposure, yet find medical aid at a relevant place close by. then work from there until you can tell you have the right doctor.

my wife says for sure this was not a female asking this. they'd know from instinct, or they'd have anther female to ask. this sounds like a foreigner father, even though the avatar is MrsJones.

she also says this could be because the baby is getting to the point of being able to walk, which is when they eat much less. also, it could simply be from moving, some babies, kids this age, don't take well to moving. so they do this for a while. but that if the baby is drinking apple juice, that's something good, and to try and feed the baby chopped apples, that the similarity to the apple juice could be enough to trigger them to eat the solid as well.

could be many other things, yes, we all know this country is cr4p for doctors and you have to work it out yourself, and there's no shortage of people on TV or in this thread or any other who think they know it all, yet help nothing and simply whinge on others for having no sense. but what it has to do with actually helping anything is very little, and the OP will gladly agree as they scroll through the nonsense asking themselves "are these people for real?".

even people you know can send you to someone they think is good, but then that doctor isn't any good at what's wrong in your specific case. we were recommended this great MD for when my wife was pregnant, he seemed to do OK, but when it came time for our baby to be born, she was 2 months early. this guy said he'd do the delivery ASAP and sent us to the emergency room at the hospital. he never showed, student doctors had to do it. he'd avoid us and disappear till I caught him in the hallway one morning sneaking past. he acted like it never happened.

Method for collecting names of doctors & clinics:

we actually look up the best hospitals now, the ones where the high end insurance is accepted, where the rates are high as well as how popular they are. this usually means the better doctors are on staff here because they get paid much better than if they are stuck only working at the government hospital.

if it's a well known and well recommended hospital, we know there's a better chance a few good doctors might be on staff, it's no guarantee but does mean a slight better chance. sometimes it starts with a basic google search for hospitals in the area.

we then visit their websites and look up the names of the doctors in the departments we seek. how do we do this? their hours are listed along with their names in such hospitals, sometimes even on spreadsheets or PDFs that may or may not be up to date, or at least on a specific web page. it helps to have a thai on hand who can help in the web search. my wife's gotten used to this, knows we are just looking for leads, and can type a department or medical speciality term in Thai.

we then call in to that dept, and ask for an appointment on the day we know they are not there. we then implore the person on the phone "do they have a clinic?, where is it?, what is it called? we can only come that day we are from far away, can you please tell us?". this always gets us the info on the name of the doctor's clinic, and sometimes even it's location along with enough to use for driving directions. we do this for as many as 6 doctors, and try to get all of the info down and check a map before we go out to them.

then we go to a given clinic or clinics that day or early eve. we arrive in the area early to save time, if they open at 530PM we get there at 430PM and scout it out. usually there are many other clinics in the area as medical communities here tend to cluster in certain areas. in BKK it might be different because it's so vast. but in cities like Udon, Nong Khai, Khon Kaen, even Korat, this method works well. call it what you want, but until there's a comprehensive foreign language based medical directory that has a built-in reviews system, you'll be stuck clicking on google search results in forums just like this one or hospitals whose sites are 90% in Thai.

where one dctor says cut out your thyroid, another will say you have an infection, no surgery required. still another will say it's OK, give you paracetamol and send you off. still others will sell you lots of drugs and do nothing. at that point it's on you to have done the research about whatever condition. in the case of this baby, "ask other women" is a good answer.

my wife feels that no matter what, if the baby is drinking apple juice, stick with that and build from there. a checkup under relaxed conditions is a good idea. just keep time on your side and things can improve, sometimes it takes a while for them to adjust. especially if the environment is not ideal.

  9. is type O acceptable substitute? it is usually compatible with all others. If so publicize that fact in the thread for best results. If not ignore the question.

@soupdragon if you are on Phuket contact Red Cross Phuket and they can coordinate with Ubon. Check for them on phuketgazette or someone in here will have their info. They have English speaking Thai volunteers who can meet you at a facility and get the blood transported.

  10. There are several options, several technologies available. For instance, 1) to not do anything at all,

option 1 would be the Thai" option for sure. I'd lay a few thousand baht down on that being the outcome 5 years from now.

they could have adjourned the meeting at that point, and handed out the posters & satellite pics so that people might better recycle them as sun shades for their roadside shops.

  11. We did not like the look of the BBQs here, way overpriced compared to OZ and NZ and they don't handle the salty air very well either. I found this guy, a genuine nice guy (although he does love to chat), the BBQ we got is top quality stainless steel and has survived 2 years here no problem so far!!

    http://www.gasbbqtha....com/index.html

dam_n, those look nice and the price is right too.

yeah I have one too from him, same guy. great quality. I bought the SS Signature because my wife is a chef. We have cooked a lot lot lot of Aussie steaks on there.

He's got a new website under way also at http://gas-bbq-grill-thailand.com that seems to have better pics...

  12. One report says 2 caught in Chumphon, 1 caught near Bangkok, -what report is true and why would we believe it anyways.

This just sounds like the one set of police grabbing anyone they can, so that Bangkok politicians & law enforcement (who just grabbed someone as well) don't have time to show up and start "reforming" the place.

Besides, if that grainy video was all they needed to home in on, and then successfully round up the suspects in a country of 80+ million, it makes you wonder, a little, right?

Hopefully they catch who *really* did this.

  13. Its all happening again, same as 2006. Next they will move parliment to Dongguan Airport where the yelowshirt protestor will follow and the red will attack them with granades while they sleep.

Where is this mythical airport,. I have never heard of it, and how could the red shirts throw grenades at people sleeping at a place that does not exist.

I think your belief about 'red shirts' throwing grenades at sleeping people is as misguided as your sense of direction, as far as i can remember nobody was convicted for throwing these grenades although I could be wrong, and I always find it easier to take a post more seriously of it is balanced and highlights the faults and violence from both sides, or are you one of these people that ignores the bombings and violence and damage instigated by the yellow shirts last time round?

Thankfully for all concerned I don't think they have the numbers like they had last time to do any real damage to the country, and one big factor is that this time around I don't think they have the army either.

I think you are a commie hack, unless you just so happen to like 5 point stars and red/yellow motifs. Your mistaken affinity for the red-shirts is transparent, as is your attempt at logic via discourse. You see a typo someone made about an airport and that's your basis for your entire argument against so-called yellow shirts. Also, you underestimate the power of human division -probably because you come from somewhere really repressed. Or worse, somewhere too free to actually understand anything with much depth.

The reds and yellows are both a childish set, Thais are showing their political nature, just as those from all countries where polarity seems to be the reigning factor. Both sides indeed have quite enough power to rip this country apart. How would you know who the Army sides with?

Instead of seizing on such polarity, -try to exert some balance and actually help the world with some insight, -or, go back to waiting in line for your rations with your comrades. And don't led Vladimir Putin trick you into any "deliveries" -stay away from that Polonium-210!

Whilst disagreeing with Carra on each and every post, iI believe you are calling 'commie' (stupid word, are you American?) Taksin, a self vested/interested billionaire laughable and has absolutely nothing to do with the ideals of communism, to which, as a misanthropist, I do not personally subscribe, but find the insane piggery of rampant capitalism equally bad.

I suggest you educate yourself. Marx would be a good start.

PS The PAD never threw grenades, the red shirts were lobbing them over the wall of Government House at the PAD.

I was implying Carra as the commie hack. Taksin's just on an ego trip akin to your hero Silvio Burlusconi. ; )

I don't need to study Marx any more than you need to study Bukowski. Is non-insane non-piggery Capitalism acceptable to you?

Everyone knows Sae Daeng's guys were tossing the grenades, and launching them. It was great to see him get a bullet right in the head for his troubles too. : )

Quit ankle-biting where people come from as a measure of their intelligence, what an tired old school-boy retort -you are no smarter than anyone else around here, after all, you hang out on ThaiVisa right? Besides, don't you come from an Imperialist line where they just went around planting flags, collecting taxes, subjugating entire cultures? Or are you from Tuvalu or something?

Tell Wayne Rooney I said Hi.

  15. This question deals with the question of monetary VALUE mostly but takes into account Circumstance.

I'm 42, my wife is 30, and I live in Udon with my Thai wife and two children (one from her previous marriage, the other from us just born recently). We also house her Mother who does a great deal around the house and is good natured by default.

I usually bring in about 100,000-200,000 THB per month in income through my online business overseas which I've had for some time. My wife is a chef by trade and is way into cuisine as an art, -she's made good money before when she owned her own restaurant but didn't like dealing with all the corruption that goes along with running a successful business here. Most we'd do is a cafe/coffee shop, and steer clear of the restaurant biz as it can wear one down even when done well.

My wife owns a house and 1/4 Rai land in Nong Khai. The non-working members of the family stay there. It's too small for me to want to stay there in NK and being here is just far enough away to allow us to run the house well. It's a strategy that's working out well.

We rent a fairly well set up house in a desirable area of Udon, for a pretty good price, with an excellent landlord who happens to be one of the wealthiest in Udon. Getting this place was a turn of luck in itself. He's never raised our rent, and the other families in the housing village are all quite well behaved.

This hasn't always been the case in other parts of Thailand, -we've lived in fairly bad, annoying and even dangerous places, all of which seemed nice at first but after the first few nights proved otherwise.

I give this background to now ask the real question, is it better to:

    1. buy land (anywhere between 100,000-350,000 baht per Rai) and build our own house (2000sq ft - 3000 sq. ft);

    2. buy an existing home for sale in a given area via a bank through my wife (without leverage of her other house, both of our idea) and pay mortgage

    3. rent the place we have for 15K baht per month and just relax and deal with whatever comes that may

I have lived here long enough to have a vision of my own outcomes here as well as those of my wife and our children, so I mostly ask those who have direct experience in actually going through the BS of buying land here, prepping it for construction, building a house themselves along with Thai "tradesmen" (LOL), and getting to actually enjoy it.

I happen to have a great deal of experience in construction management. I also can speak, read, and write Thai.

What would you do? What have you done?

    Renting:

I have met a few happy family men who actually rent. They make a lot of money too, but are pretty sly when it comes to evading all the pitfalls of:

    • Khee Mao Neighbors
    • Sneaky Lenders/ Banks
    • Crummy Schools
    • Bad Location/Locals
    • Corruption, Intrigue, Mayhem
    • Losing Cash, Getting Ripped Off

But over 5 years renting starts to look like a waste of cash. But 15K a month isn't a lot of cash now is it? I'm not a pensioner and won't be, my country flushed all that down the tubes already. So there is a time line where renting would be impossible.

    Buying Land/ Building A House:

My wife doesn't like some of the huge houses we have lived in, she's pretty down to earth, and yes, it took quite a few years before I got around to finding her. She likes a cozy place, and has locked out all of the external forces (family or otherwise) that would ruin our living space. She's into flowers and poetry, and I would say she's quite a bit more intelligent than just about anyone I have met here in 5 years.

So a basic house, 4 bedrooms, not even two stories is acceptable. We fit in such a space now just fine, and if anything, it's me who wants to live on at least a rai or two of land if not more.

But we are very wary of buying land, we've seen the floods first hand, -we've seen all the idiots who live on the outskirts of town, yet there remain some good opportunities. It would mean cleaning land, battling cobras, scorpions, and some corruption, but we'd have our piece and could do what we want. The bigger it is, the farther away from potentially annoying neighbors we'd be. But we'd also be more isolated and thereby less secure. We'd be searching for areas where other new homes were recently done, hoping to establish commerce of our own in the new area.

    Buying an existing house:

Is this the easiest and most lucrative options? Buy a house for 3 million via some bank mortgage? Pay if off as quickly as possible and flip it if needed, stay if we are happy?

    -saanya

  16. ...and be relieved of 190,000 Baht to be granted this Thai version of a "green card".

Green cards are of no use in Thailand.

Back on topic has any one received a permanent residency card recently?

My brother also received his "letter" just recently, like the OP. Apparently, all the applications have been gathering dust for years and are now being re-opened for consideration. He has not yet received the book yet though.

Thank you for being the only person to even remotely stay on the original topic. Will this be the only response to the original poster's question?

Who else has had a response on their old or new PR application?
