  1. For months, a British colleague would leave early. Often after lunch (not taking afternoon classes, not just leaving after the last class). Asking for permission to not sign out near 5 pm, I was admonished. After several months, I quit because of this.

I've had them do this during holidays as well. The Thais would get like 10 days to 2 weeks' off. We had to sign in daily.

When challenged, their response was "you are temporary"

  2. Several teachers I know have never bothered to file tax returns. Walking away from 5-digit tax refunds. My last school promised to handle the tax returns for all foreigners. In the past, this has worked out (some reported getting "a few hundred Baht").

The official deadline is in March? They said, they would do it "in Summer". It never happened.

All efforts, to get the tax forms have been in vain. Angry and desperate for the refund, I complained to OPEC.

    Tonight, they emailed a response.

It's so bizarre, I wonder what to make of it? The issue at hand is the tax reporting. Just as a reminder.

They e,ailed me my contract and all the gross salaries of the foreign teachers at the school. Interesting. ** Then they reported that because of me being some bad dude, who couldn't get a B-Visa, my tax complaint has been labeled as a hoax. <deleted>?!? I got a B-Visa and the author of this letter needs to stay on topic. Alas, he never thought about his own tax affairs, the need to file a tax return? The document the Revenue Department wants?

    They walk among us.

The local RD told me, schools have to submit tax payments "monthly". If they did it dutifully, why can't they hand over the confirmations If not, I would rush to make those payments and be done with.

TBH, it's a sweet little racket - who wouldn't like to file tax returns for colleagues, pocketing about 95%.

  3. My teeth are terrible, nightmarish and $ 20,000 may not be enough to get them 'sorted' in the USA.

A toothache was bothering me and i knew exactly  w h i c h  tooth ached. The public hospital in HA LONG had a room with 4 or 5 chairs and about 7 dentists, standing around. A young doc made me open my mouth and hammered with a metal tool on some other tooth. Insisting that this was the bad tooth. (No xray). I protested and he was adamant. That 1 minute of surreal nonsense cost 350,000 VND and I'm still upset.

Many Vietnamese are incredibly self-centered, far into the autistic spectrum. The other day, I witnessed the rider of a scooter almost getting killed. He drove between 2 lanes on the highway. A car came speeding & honking. The car was overtaking, when he swerved into the car's path. Oblivious to the noise, not looking into his mirror, acting, as if he was the only man on the highway.

    PS3

There is a video by MYSTIC (?) on how to repair a corrupted PS3 hard drive.

I bought a PS3 on Fleabay but haven't tried using it yet... I would sell your PS3 as defect, there might be a poor kid out there happy to give you like 500 THB including shipping for yours.

Teachers in Thailand have been abused for decades.

I feel bad for the students that are getting poor education by untrained teachers.

Until the govt gets serious and dumps money into the education system, nothing will change.

Quick! Which other country spends 4% of GDP on education?!? OTOH, there are lots of crazily wasteful bureaucratic oddities in Thailand. Complete schools without students included. Some 12,000 oversears, and silly local rules (allowing the worst students to obtain passing grades, thus rendering the whole system worthless from an international perspective. (Yers, there are fantastic Thai students and teachers. The latter must start at about 10 grand, although they would beat many foreign teachers if they had a chance to compete fairly. Alas, Thailand thinks that someone's passport is an idicator of English ability.

Years ago, there were countless African teachers. They have almost disappeared. And clever direct-hires give dodgy applicants a different job description. I had a colleague, 67 without a degree. No Krusapha or fingerprinting for  h i m.

Really? Enough reports of people being turned away when having had 2 or more actual visas, and border hopping has been tough for a long time, so how have they been getting away with it all those years?

One teacher having been caught, also doesn't seem like massive evidence of a grand epidemic.

au contraire, it is a massive problem (during the probationary period). TH needs a new solution like an easy B-VISA.gb

  6. DON'T take that International bus. Mine departed almost an hour late. Overcrowded. No concern for a timely departure.

With luck, you can make it. But take a Tuk Tuk to the border and from the border. (Thai side, I haggled hard and got it for 100 THB, on the Laos side, it had to be 160 THB or else - that day, there was no one else around and I walked right up to the counter. Don't come on Mondays or,,, Thursdays?

They wanted "proof of funds" for a SETV and I returned empty handed.

  7. Hi All

how do I comprehend this: weeks' of unpaid work, donning white clothes and all that.

She borrowed money /9her son has been jailed) and I sent her clothes and 2 notebooks to store, as the repayment hadn't materialized, I thought this might give her the chance to do something for me and fell better about the whole situation).

Each notebook was covered in clothes and sent by registered mail. The parcels were all received (acknowledged).

    ---

It now appears that she has decided : let's embezzle those computers, this will be better than the 640 THB I sent her 6 weeks ago for postage.

Q: Is this normal? I mean, to wear white requires a lot of very tough practices. But harming a friend who loaned her money from a poor teacher's salary, how would she reconcile this with her faith?

    Am seriously baffled.

  8. What brought this on?

I've had dog owners say "don't show fear", putting the blame on me, a kid.

I've been surrounded by soi dogs and they made me come off the road, busy trying to kick them while riding the motorcycle (some other dog had peed on).

Perhaps this was the cause? Some dog peed on your bike and you riding past that dog <offended> him?
