  1. You do have a license here that allows for riding a motorcycle? you have been here many months according to the visa your on which means your not eligble to use a international driving/riding permit ?

Yes I have. But was just curious. I have both in fact.

"Been here many months according to the visa your on" ???

First, go to a local clinic or hospital, get a health check done, with the purpose of obtaining a driving license.

You take both licenses with you, to where ever you locally can obtain a motorcycle license in Thailand.

Copies of passport, visa page, arrival card.

You need to pass 2 or 3 silly tests, like colorblind test, depth vision, and possibly a braking test.

All done in the office and done in few minutes. Not even sitting on an actual motorbike.

Pay the fee, and you will have a crisp new Thai driving license for motorcycles, rinse repeat to get a license for a car, assuming you have that already in your UK driving license.

Cant remember the actual fee, but it was maybe 500 baht ish, less than 1000 baht for sure.

Be there early, like 08:30, bring your gf as translator.

  2. As usual the story is very convoluted . Misinformation obtained thru a Thai interpreter. I don't see what crime he committed in Thailand. And his crime in the Netherlands is only an assertion at this point. The Thai authorities sure didn't waste any time grabbing his assets though.

Yeah, thats the weird part. He is innocent until proven guilty, so how can seizing his property be legal ?

I mean they could freeze his assets if needed, but to actually seize assets from a yet to be proven guilty person seems harsh.

If anything thats the real crime here... .....

  3. Bomb? It was a hand grenade, and I've thrown dozens of that type of Grenade in the past 10 years,

Just curious why you threw dozens of RDG5 hand grenades in the past 10 years and how you got them.

Ever been to that very lovely sunny Afghanistan ?

They have loads of nice handy playthings like grenades and assault rifles there.

We the western coalition, naturally try and collect as many of these playthings as possible, as we don't really want to be hit by any of them.

And you naturally try these things out as soldiers, to know how they work, how powerful they are.

And you couldn't have thought this far yourself ?

  4. I know a Thai girl, that by the worst possible luck, through no fault of her own - in a curve, was hit / hit in an oncoming ( in the wrong lane obviously ) motorbike with no lights, that then skid into a tree, where the injuries was sustained. The driver eventually died in the hospital.

She had to fork over 200k all in all, police and family.

So when the norm is that you need to pay 100k per life to families, where is the 200k for the UK family ?

Or does this only apply when a Thai person dies ?

  5. When the Internet in Thailand offers me 50MB and beyond through a fibre optic cable I might consider downloading until then the ridiculously slow speed I get,I'll stick to the satellite TV.

That's what I was afraid of. The idea of Internet TV sounds good, but in practice it's probably still away off here for any sort of dependable, quality service.
Indeed it works flawlessly in the UK where Virgin Broadband are rolling out mind boggling speeds of 100 Mb through a fibre optic network,it's fact that copper wires and Internet just don't cut the mustard, like most things when relocating to Thailand we have to sacrifice these luxuries and go with what we've got, that's why so many on here myself included are always moaning, because the service and quality we experienced at home is not available here.

People are always trying to find the next best way to watch TV and have what they left behind because naturally they miss what they have always known.

In Northern EU at least, they implemented Vdsl2 standard on the regular copper lines. Basically 40 Mbit internet on the same old copper cables that used to support 33,3 kbit dial up.

So with a 40 Mbit you can stream HD easily. So the copper does cut the mustard. ;-)

  6. Worst of all it's the ignorance and unwillingness in investing in the proper broadband and telecom infrastructure that has never been taken seriously.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were more problems, outages, random disconnections or other related telecom technical problems on account of insufficient telecom and broadband infrastructure. whistling.gifwhistling.gifwhistling.gifwhistling.gifwhistling.gif

Worst of all will be the millions of devices all of a sudden on the internet. They don't seem willing to invest in proper bandwidth at the international gateways. Certainly not keeping up with the demand seems the way they work. So who besides me could care less about faster internet within Thailand.

Its not like the internet within Thailand is slow now, if we are talking a regular connection. The problem will be when 3G is all around and all the smartphones, tablets etc will have a much higher demand on the allocated international bandwidth we have. Millions of more devices and I'm betting the last they will upgrade are the international gateways....

  7. The quality control is an issue we all hope they attend to stricktly.

Just buy an imported American Coca-cola vs the one you get i Thailand. Miles apart.

( Heard a story once, dunno if it's true, but a good story anyhow; the reason why there is no coke can vendor machines in Thailand, should be the punishment handed out to Coca-cola Thailand by Coca-cola, because they fail in getting the taste right. )

The current Vietnam brewed Carlsberg is not pretty bad - but its still stretching it, to call it a Carlsberg..

But Thai's and quality control, is a bit bard to fit into once sentence, without chuckling.

Anyway we will all have to wait and see.

  8. What is the point of killing of 2 policewomen, aparently tricked into going there, with a false burglery phone call ?

It was not as if nobody was looking for him.. Several hundreds officers had been looking for him for a month.

So why on earth would he lure 2 officers into a house ( on a what looks to be random day ) and kill them, just to turn himself in, later that day.

Well ok aparently he killed 2 others beforehand, so maybe this bloke is far from 100% in the brain department.

  9. "But [the government] must aim high in order to create confidence," Kittiratt said in the speech. "The finance minister needs to lie sometimes to create good feelings. The world knows this as a 'white lie'. The goal is to create confidence, which in turn benefits the country's economy as a whole."

That seems to be the policy of every single government organisation..

TAT - and numbers.. they are all over the place.. Have been for as many years as I can remember.

Claiming 80-90% occupancy when there is as much action in the hotels, you could hear a penny drop ~ something they haven't !

Last years flood.. Dont even get me started about that.. dam_n "white lies" was everywhere.. Or ignorance / stupidity...

  10. I have been reading all these responses on what is murder and what is manslaughter and some are quite funny really. Quite amusing to someone who has had 20+ years in policing. Carry on guys.

I agree. Not that I have been in policing. But the armchair laywers are out in force.

We might as well start to speculate what the verdict will be.

Im thinking reckless driving, causing accidental death. Big fine and a slap on the wrists and a suspended sentence.
