  1. I red the news, the statistic that Mastercard compiled is based on international air arrivals.

I haven't seen anyone mention this here. But the result of this survey could be somewhat skewed since the rising tourists comprises mostly of Chinese. They saw this movie "Lost in Thailand" which was released last year and became the highest grossing film in the history of Chinese cinema, surpassing that of the Titanic. In the months following that and onward, Thailand have been seeing the sudden surge in the number of Chinese tourists to Thailand due to the influence of that movie.

  2. Also some Thai names can be hilarious to English speaking people. Ex. a lot of women are Porn--something Pornthip, Pornphen, Thitiporn As for men, the Chid--something "Pichid, Chidchai etc. won't sound good when someone hears it

  3. But all Thais have a permanent "nickname" which they never change...and they often use that name, even in business correspondence (and printed on name cards)

Also sometimes you'll know a Thai person by his/her nickname and tend to forget the real name of that person. Back at the international school when I was in 8th grade, there was

this classmate that tried to change her nick name from "Mon" to "Pat", the homeroom teacher announced that in front of the class one day, but nobody ever bother to call her by the

new name  I thought it was pretty hilarious at the time.

  4. I have known a Lieutenant police colonel at Hua Mark police station who would be willing to do the search of the Thai citizen database for you for 500-1000 Baht--given you can provide a good, legitimate reason for wanting that data. Also (presumably for a higher fee) the police has access to social security data, so they can even help to locate where the person is currently being employed. If this is important for you and you need the contact quickly it may be the way to go. But don't approach the detective office, as they will charge exorbitant fee from you.

  5. Monty, please PM me and I will see if I can help you to understand what happened here. Thank you.

    ^^^Thanks for the help!

As things stand now, it looks like for some unfathomable reason (it's still banks :) ) the Australian bank transferred the funds to another Thai bank, which then forwarded the funds to my Bkk bank account.

Which explains why the lower Friday rate was used, since it likely arrived at the other bank Friday, and the delay forwarding the funds as the other bank probably used the cheapest Thai Interbank transfer rate, which can take 2 days to complete...

Now gotta find out why the Oz bank didn't send it to Bkk Bank directly, as they have done several times before!

I don't understand this. How can the Australian bank transfer the money to another Thai bank before being forwarded to you. If that Australian bank has an established relationship with BKK bank (which is most likely the case) then an intermediary institution is definitely out of the equation. But if you do find out, please tell me whether that intermediary bank is foreign (CitiBank, HSBC) as I suspect or not.

Another thing I don't understand is why did the BahtNet transaction from that different Thai bank to your BKK bank account took two days to complete. BahtNet, no matter how many millions or billion Baht will TAKE NO MORE THAN TWO HOURS to clear, not two days! So may be a foul play somewhere here? If you did find out more, please tell.

  6. OK, I was WRONG. :bah:

Checked out the location based on the "Duang dao hairdressing school" sign with a couple of Bangkok old timers and was able to

confirmed that this was the long gone "Rachathewi roundabout" which is now the intersection between Phayatai and Petchaburi

road. From the photo provided by the OP, it seems that the person was standing at the roundabout and looking in the direction

heading to Pratunam. The Duang dao hairdressing school was just a little distance from the department of livestock but its current location is opposite the First hotel just passing Pantip plaza. Please take a look at the link below. The roundabout was said to have been gone for at least 30 years and I think that they just moved the fountain to each corner of the junction as shown.

  7. Billboards and shop signs tend to change over the decades, so they're not very reliable especially if those shops have long gone out of business.

The location is definitely at the 22nd of July roundabout in Pom Prap Sattru Phai district not far from Hua Lam Phong train station, as I immediately recognise

the architecture of that fountain. Check out these links on Google Earth:

They don't look to be the same fountain at all. The one in OPs photo appears to be round, while in the photos you've provided, the fountain appears to have more of a petal design.

That's because in the OP's photo, you're looking at just one of the "petals" jutting out from the side of the picture! Each of those petals appears rounded, look again on the under side. Also the surroundings of that fountain have change numerous times over the years.

  9. I have quite a few Indian friends here in Thailand (2nd and 3rd generations Sikhs) And most of them are into loan shark business, a lot of them are into fabric trading and tailoring, and a few I know are into real estate and property brokerage/trading. May be you should get in touch with a few of them before deciding to settle down for a business here. You cannot avoid interacting with them because these guys are like old neighbourhood bullies!!

  10. Just a little off topic. But anybody living on or near Ratchadaphisek road here in BKK? It's amazing how there's this retail madness; Lotus at the start of the road, Esplanade (with Tops supermarket) Jusco (Japanese), Carrefour, Robinson (with Tops again) all smacked right against one another, and now they're building yet another Central plaza right at the intersection. If anybody ever need to do any kind of shopping that involved getting stuff from multiple stores, this is truely the area to visit. (Apart from going to massage parlors for other stuffs...)

  11. Thanks for the the responses' guys.

I understand that many are against the sin sod now a days, and it does seem a outdated practice. But i am neither for or against it my fiencee wants to do this and pay her self then i would back her.

But the reason i am asking this idea is of course for my own protection. I dont want to put my own money at risk. Buy getting a loan in her name Should something go wrong and i say SHOULD then it would be her who would take the fall not me. I am more that willing to support my wife in other things, but the sin sod is something that she wants/feels she has to do for her family so she can deal with it. Like i say it if all went wrong then i would be able to walk away. I understand many people say wait a year or so and save. But this would mean a year apart when she could be in Scotland working plus it would still be my money at risk even if did save.

My main aim in the question was to find out of the a loan would be possible if i backed my wife to start wife, you say she would need a guarantee so would her family or sister who all have full time jobs be able to act as this for her?

Strange question i know, but i some case you have to think out the box. It is all to easy to say no and walk away, but i am hoping some where down the line we can reach a compromise and this way would allow us to do so.

    Thanks again.

From information you've given about your wife's current status. The answer is simply 'NO'. No bank in Thailand will grant such loan to an individual who hasn't been working in a well established company for at least 6 months. I will be prepared to give you 10,000 Baht if your wife can get a loan.

  12. Somebody once told me that before an Israeli guy marries a Thai woman, he asked her to sign some sort of contract that indicated that she will not get anything should their marriage come to an end. Not sure whether this kind of contract will be effective under Thai law, but you should try the Jewish ways sometimes...

  13. Im sure the "reds" will stop all this though???

I think you got this the other way around. The Thai police and the red shirt thugs are on the same side, that little helper in the stall was probably a red too.

Thailand's only hope lies with the "yellows", but in light of the fact that the police are not on their side, things looked pretty groomy here...

  14. Looks like our OP is back.

    New and improved English!

:DNo no. I would be prepared to make a swear in front of the Emerald Buddha statue that I am not the OP (the Indo guy)

Just couldn't resist the temptation to signup and add a reply to topics like this. But I have helped a number of farang guys

deal with similar circumstances a number of times already. The OP can confirm at anytime that he's not writing this. I just

wanted to use our positions to help people in distress. And we're not a scammer or the kind that rip people off as well, because

we have a reputation to keep.

  15. Sounds like that driver could be a potential threat to you hereafter. Do you know any authority figure that have "errand boys" he can send to warn that bastard?

In all seriousness, I have an uncle (my father's cousin) who could provide a "warning" service at very reasonable price. He was a high ranking general in the

Thai ministry of Defence (providing security for the palace) After retirement, the King installed him as the deputy director of the Crown Property Bureau (he's the

guy that is responsible for kicking out the hard-to-leave Suanlum Night bazaar expired tenants) . He also owns a security firm that provides bodyguard services.

If you want the "warning" service (with or without hospitalisation-but no killing here) you can contact me, and I can arrange for you to have a meeting with him at

his office. I am Thai, and I can tell you that your trouble is definitely not over!!
