1. My 4S bought in the US has developed some hardware problems and is out of warranty. The on/off button has almost stopped working, the camera LED is permanently on, and often the phone thinks headphones are plugged in (and thus won't play through the speakers) even when they aren't. The on/off button has been slowly failing; the other two happened recently after my "waterproof" case let in a little bit of water; not enough to trigger the liquid contact indicators, but enough to cause these additional problems. Power off, reset, and restore do not solve any of the issues. I took it to an authorized repair shop ("Smart Bar" inside iStudio) today and they said they are not authorized to open the phone, but for 8,500 B could send it to Apple and get a replacement. I could send it to Apple in the US myself and get it fixed/repaired for $199. Or I could take it to a repair shop here, but that would then preclude getting authorized service.

So, can anyone recommend a repair shop in Bangkok that they would actually trust?

  2. I have an old iPhone 3G purchased in U.S., unlocked and working with AIS here. When AIS rolled out 3G service, I could not (and still cannot) get 3G service; stuck with EDGE (2G). I believe this is because the phone is only tri-band for 3G (850, 1900, 2100; see tech specs at http://support.apple.com/kb/sp495), but AIS is using 900 MHz. Can anyone confirm? And does DTAC or True use one of those other frequencies, such that if I switched providers, I could get 3G service? (If so, I assume it's easy to port the phone number?)

    Thanks for any help.

  3. I know that iPhones purchased here come factory unlocked. Apparently in some other countries (e.g. UK, Brazil), service providers will, for a fee or free, unlock iPhones purchased elsewhere. This is done by adding the phone's unique ID to the Apple database of "officially" unlocked phones, which presumably only a service provider is going to be able to do. See http://www.iphonedownloadblog.com/2010/05/06/official-iphone-unlock/ and responses for details.

So, has anyone here approached True/AIS/Dtac to find out whether they have the power to do this, and whether, for a fee or otherwise, they will do so?

I have a 3G I brought with me from the U.S. running iOS 4.0, jailbroken, unlocked, and working fine with an AIS SIM, but I would like to upgrade to 4.1, and also not to have to worry about future upgrades. I would certainly think it worth a modest fee to convert it to "officially" unlocked status.

  4. So what are the options for buying fresh roasted coffee beans in the city? I found KuppA, but 488B for 250g is pretty steep, and they didn't even have any Thai beans on the board.

Sorry if this has been recently discussed; I searched and mostly found discussions of Chiang Mai options (which sound much better). Also, any suggestions for where to buy a decent espresso machine and grinder would be appreciated. I have Boncafe on the list; any others?

Thanks much.
5. Just moved here with a 3G from the U.S. I've read past posts on jailbreaking it. Assuming I successfully do that, can someone please explain the carrier options, in particular pricing, data limitations, contract requirements, and coverage? I've tried browsing local providers' sites, but knowing almost no Thai at this point, I found it difficult to figure out. I'll be using the phone in Bangkok 98% of the time. Thank you for your help.
