    That's Good, that problem fixed.

Did you ask him about your SafetyCut(SC) tripping with storms?

If the storm is a fair way from you, and the SC trips, then this could be another problem. Mine used to do that until I found it was incorrectly wired. When I fixed that, it only trips if there is a lightning strike around the house area.

Another bit of info I got from this electrical forum, is to not have your pumps on the SC feed, as this can cause tripping with storms as well.

I didnt mention the storms but will next time im buying him a beer

we did have issues with the water pump and safty cut when first installed but they said they hadnt adjusted the saftycut ( they cut the earth pin off the pump plug which was all done before the CU was in (before the house as well)

    Cheers

  2. Thanks for all the replies

I have had my falang friend (who has just returned) who is a professional electrician come over and check the CU he had proper testing equipment

He found a a neutral earth link in the CU and removed it and all is working OK

He doesnt understand why it worked before? but is going to think about it ( No changes to my knowledge in the CU for many months)

    He checked polarity ok

Earth is working correctly and of adequate size all wiring is of correct size except for a wire added non standard in cu

So safety cut wasnt faulty and he agreed with me they were trying to run up a bill before fixing the fault

I am now much happier with the state of my CU and will continue to learn and may redo some things to a standard when i understand them well

    Cheers for the help guys

How long have you had the electrical and safetycut installed without any problems? How long had the installation been finished without any problems?

Take a good look around your CU and electrics for any red ants. DON'T POKE YOUR SCREWDRIVER INTO ANY POWER POINTS.

We have been in the house for nearly 3 years with minor faults but we dont have breakers tripping (which worries me a little LOL) but have had the saftycut go a few times during storms stc

No ants ( i poison with boric acid and we dont get much in the house at all)

I have had issues with water heater recently as link will show

  4. Hi all

I am after a bit of advice as i am now having trouble with our safetycut CU

The safty cut has tripped and wont stay on when reset

i closed each breaker and retried and it did stay on for a few seconds with it all closed but doesnt repeat reliably

i.e. basically it wont stay on for more than a few seconds even with it all cut off

WE went to the shop who supplied and they sent a guy to check and he removed the safety cut module and everything is now working he is getting a new one for us

    all good so far

But the electrician is saying we must have a short somewhere to cause the fault in the first place and wants to remove all the light and power points and check everything

    Does this make sense?

If we have a short shouldnt the breaker for that circuit trip?

he also said our wiring is to small?

we have 1.5 mil for lighting ( all LED or flourescent)

    and 2.5 for everything else

any way just interested in thoughts

I have put him off for now

    Cheers David

were the metal outlet fittings a modification to the original 'as supplied' arrangement, ie, was the original outlet equipment all plastic?

The original shower head and hose were used until the rinnai (2nd replacement) where i used the supplied chrome head and hose, Then the last installer replaced with the supplied plastic one

I could put the original back but i dont want to open that can of fish right now

I think i have a solution as i have a frriend who is away working as master electrician on a fishing boat will be back in a few weeks i will ask him to have a look

trying to upload a few photos for those who have asked but my internet can be very flakey

    Cheers

I note from the OP photos that the heater outlet is a metal flex...presumably attached to a metal shower head? what does this say about conductive capability when compared to an all plastic arrangement?

does the new heater without problems have all plastic materials on the outlet side?

Yes but it cant be just that as there is no circuit to the chrome casing only path is the water surely

I did try and test this earlier but the reply was the wernt using anyway

  7. Thanks all good questions and as I dont do work on breaker boxes  (CU) i cant answer and my thai isnt good enough so i have to have my wife translate

Makro has refunded the money (and said they have had a lot of returns of that unit) and we have a local shop installing a Hitachi with 1 year onsite warranty and we dont pay until we are satisfied all is working

The electrician? just had a test probe that looked like a digital thermometer no multimeter

    will update

anyone recommend a testing unit or multi meter i should get so i can test whats happening (I consider myself intelligent enough that i dont know enough to go into Cu except to look)

    an hour later

New Unit installed and everyone is happy mo shocks

The <deleted> installing it pit a a new shower head mount in the wrong place while i was 5 metres away but TiT

  8. OK electrician has been and has felt the shock so my wife is not imagining

checked everything and all wired correct found some corrosion where earth wire goes into ground

so i purchased a new earth rod and connected = no difference

ran a separate wire to new earth - no difference

conclusion from electrician he is getting 12 volt at copper jacket on heater so the machine must be faulty ( huge coincidence that the other unit is faulty as well and both reputable brands)

my conclusion after about 7 different electricians who have visited over the last few years none have been able to test an earth

i guess i will have to by one and do it myself

will contact Makro to return and get same electrician to install his reccomended panasonic

    hopefully we can conclude soon

  9. Thanks for the replies

    pics of installation

if i have to i will install a deeper bigger earth wire but i would like to avoid going down the multiple earth route as i dont think it is the right way to do it and not as safe ( I am not an expert on this but it is what i understand from my reading of thai wiring codes

I will get the guy who installed the air conditioner to check as he is using the same earth wire and seems to know what he is doing better than most Thais here

    Cheers

I just had a new shower water heater installed as well...a separate, dedicated earthing arrangement is not 'claptrap' and is required for all of these shower water heaters...make sure you got a little yellow earthing wire from the shower unit attached directly to ground (copper rod in the dirt)...it is not recommended to have your consumer unit (breaker box) earthing arrangement perform this function...

I dont claim to know all but

my understanding is it is against Thai law (not that matters much) to have more than 1 earth in a domestic installation. please correct me if i am wrong

  11. Hi

I have built a house in Issan  and had it wired to a reasonable standard IMHO

I have a large saftey- cut breaker board and i put the earth rod in myself

Had issues with the electrician so had all connections checked by another commended electricain

had a Mex 5100 watt water heater installed on its own circuit which worked ok until its warranty expired and became faulty and now doesn't work

purchsed a new stiebel eltron 4500 watt unit from Thai Watsadu and installed it and for me was working fine

my wife and motherinlaw say they get electric shocks from holding the showerhead (not big shocks but they wont use it)

Contact Thai Watsadu and they send 2 guys out who after the usual claftrap of i need a seperate earth to make it work can find anything wrong

my wife goes to Thai Watsadu and makes a small fuss so they agree to give us store credit as they dont have another of this unit

ok my choices are now much more limited but i found a rinnai 4500 watt unit at makro at a good price and installed it

working ok for me but my wife says she is still getting shocked, its not a big shock as if the she uses a dry hand to hold the shower head she doesnt feel it

any advice I am in Issan 45 km from udon thani and happy to pay a reasonable cost for someone who can solve this ( I am still going to shower under it but need to understand what the issue is before my wife will use it

    Cheers David

PS have one more local guy to come look at it but then dont have many options

  12. Hi I am having trouble getting clear information on what is required to check in and board a domestic flight in Thailand

When travelling with a 5 year old Thai child (my niece) she has no ID

    I have heard no requirement

I have heard need birth certificate

I Have heard need signed document from a parent

Parents wont be travelling with child

I am returning her from Bangkok to Udon Thani

Any accurate help would be appreciated

I have tried ringing the airline in my home country and they dont know

I am not in Thailand until a few days before this flight

  13. Ive had one for over a year and find its a great little car, not the best at much but not bad either

For the price i thought it was best only issue was a rear brake which was completly replaced under warrtany

we considered the swift but it has less room for the driver and my wife didnt like the smaller boot opening

main issue with the swift at the time was no english information from the dealer of website to know what you were getting for your money (which is dearer for the swift)

Ill sell you mine as im going home on thursday lol

  14. Im Just finishing a thai style house but to a bit higher standard and western bathrooms (2) and basic western kitchen

I didnt skimp on good materials eg good cement and higher grade steel for roof

    roof is 252 m2

    house is 125 m2

    about 190 m2 of Tiling

Contract for labour was fixed cost 125,000 baht

cost is arount 600,000 total depending on what you include

Mistakes I made was with roof design and the electrical sub contractor was awful

But I could have had what i wanted for the same price if i understood it better.

    Best of luck

feel free to ask any questions

a friend has just finished a much nicer 2 storey place for a bit over 3 million but did all the purchasing and designing himself

We are over 100km from khon kaen but have most building supplies near by

  15. Slow down people....there is nothing in this story that says scam except the headline.

A few futsal fields are showing wear 2 years after construction and these stupid journalists assume corruption. The story simply says the company may have assets seized and is being investigated. Wait until investigation is complete before jumping to conclusions

Atually if there is no corruption it would be the exception to the rule

usuall Its not hidden in any clever way as they dont think anyone can do anything about it

the contracts that get bid for around where I am ask for up to 50% of the contracts value in cash before you get the contract

That means you have to do the work for half the money. Its no wonder things dont last

Ive even asked lawyers to do some things for me but they always ask for the bribe money they have to pay on top of the fees. Even buying land from a policeman didnt help me having to pay a bribe for the transfer

That will not compensate for the fact all Thai Smile flight will leave from Don Meuang as of 26 October, I'll take Bangkok Airways instead, they also allow 30kgs if you register with their FF program.

My Thai Smile ticket for 8th November clearly states Suvarabhumi as the departure airport to Chiang Mai

Just a FYI i have been trying to book Thaiair from udon thani to bangkok and now all the flights ive looked at go to Don meung (since the 20th i was told by Thai staff)

i will be flying bangkok air as my connecting flight as im flying out of swampy

  17. Hi had my own pools for 20 years at home (NZ) and not a fan of chlorine but it is effective

I have used tri chlor tablets in the skimmer to add chlorine (has cyanuric acid)

But i reduced my chlorine need by adding copper and silver to the water with an ioniser

many ways to do this and if you got the electodes made here would be pretty cheap

when i build my pool in issan will be doing this

im in issan happy to discuss if i can help

    cheers

best of luck finding liquid chlorine

  18. Happened to me this morning

My wid\fe said she would be downstaris with my niece for me to take her to school at 7:45 (we confirmed this at 7:35)

    7:55 still not there

    wonders why im annoyed

But as i have spent time in the pacific islands i understand the concept of island time (same same as thailand)

They are more laid back than us

but it still anoys me when others make a time and dont keep to it

    cest la v ie

  19. yeas i like the schwepps range much better than the others

although i tried the dry ginger when i couldnt get the manao and was disappointed (not very gingery and too sweet)

The local ma and pa shop stocks it again now so must be coming back

Bitter lemon would be great if i could find it

But i drink soda water now for the fizzy bite but some say thats not that good for you either
