  2. I find it interesting that here in Thailand, where the traffic is surely more dangerous than back home in the west, that foreigners will be less cautious than when they were back home. If you got on a motorbike or in a car back home then you wouldn't think twice about putting on a helmet or doing up your seatbelt, but come to Thailand and all that common sense just goes right out the window (along with the rest of you!).

  3. There should be financial rewards for members of the public who can provide information about corrupt officials and automatic jail sentences of no less than two years plus prohibition on further being employed as a government official for life. The whole transfer to a less active position makes a mockery of any attempt to stamp out corruption.

  4. Offer planned for Thai "red-shirt" in exchange for revealing masterminds

The Justice Ministry's Department of Special Investigation (DSI) plans to give an offer to arrested "red-shirt" guard Surachai Thewarat in exchange for him to reveal the masterminds of major incidents during the recent "red-shirt" rallies, DSI chief Tharit Pengdit said on Wednesday.

The Bangkok Post's website reported that DSI investigators are going to visit Surachai, who has been detained at the Bangkok Remand Prison, in the next day or two days, and will offer that his one-month-old baby girl be protected and his wife and mother be spared as witnesses in illegal arms trading case, Tharit said.

Surachai was arrested in the central Lop Buri province last week for allegedly being involved in terrorism acts during the recent "red-shirt" protests.

The terrorim acts include a series of RPG attacks on the Dusit Thani Hotel and Lumpini police station, and the firing of an M-79 grenades at the BTS station at Sala Daeng and attacking crowds at Silom Road. All of these attacked places are located in central Bangkok, the capital of Thailand.

Also, the DSI has claimed that it conducted a sting operation to buy weapons from Surachai and four accomplices before he was arrested.

Surachai's wife was the one, who received 60,000 baht (1,858.14 U.S. dollars), which the DSI officials paid for the weapons during the sting operation, according to Tharit.

The death toll from a series of violent clashes between the " red-shirt" protestors and troops during March 12 to May 19 in central Bangkok stood at 88 as some 1,885 others were wounded.

Would love it if he took the offer and implicated the government. Does he have to give actual evidence or just provide a name?

  5. Agree that Thaksin should be behind bars although very much disagree with the very boring notion that foreigners can't ever understand what is going on in Thailand. Of course no one knows everything about any topic but doesn't mean that they can not have a very good understanding about it. Thailand is not some unique place that is impossible for outsiders to understand.

  6. If you go on a weekday (non holiday time) then it will be far from crowded. Water is, as mentioned, nicely solar heated. This weekend should be fairly busy as is a long weekend.
