  1. From my US Embassy in Bangkok Embassy mailing ([email protected]) on Saturday:

Chiang Rai: Beginning April 1, the governor of Chiang Rai province ordered the search of all vehicles entering the province. Authorities will not allow the entry of travelers who cannot explain why they need to enter the province, travelers who are not wearing a mask, and travelers who do not cooperate with health officials. Anyone entering the province will need to provide their contact details and undergo a health screening.  The announcement is available in Thai on the province's Facebook page: https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1910729662393830&id=165001746966639&__tn__=%2As%2As-R

  2. There's no ban currently on burning. That starts sometime in March.

So everyone is having to move their burning up earlier. Not as effective as when they wait till March/April (lots more leaves to fall, more undergrowth to dry up) but if the government is going to make it illegal then, better do it now.

Now ask yourself, if they don't burn annually/semi-annually, what sort of long-term danger is brewing if the dead matter keeps building up on the forest floor? Wild fires like in the U.S. and Australia?

  3. One doesn't find the same ingredients in Thailand that would normally be used for Mexican flavors; the many varieties of chilis and other spices. No tomatillos, none of the nuts and seeds used to make good mole, etc.

It's like Thai food in America, which often falls short of the common street stand in Thailand, due to the lack of ingredients. Doesn't matter how good/authentic the cook is - the dishes don't have the flavors.

  4. they are GOOD as long as things go well.

they are utter CRAP once things go wrong.

    my case (very recent case):

bought TWO items on ebay from same seller worth 150$.

    received ONLY ONE ...

I emailed seller 3x but got NO response.

opened PAYPAL CLAIM which was favored in my advantage BUT...

    but...

in order to get a refund for the 150 $ I had to send back the received item by registered mail.

    price 47$

that's trhe correct item, right, the item i paid for ...

so.... in order to get a refund of 150$ i must actually PAY 47$... ergo i lose 47$ because some seller <deleted>*CKs up.

emailed with paypal 10x. never received a proper reply to my case, only standard/generic emails...

"send back" "send us tracking" etc....

While PayPal and Ebay are joined at the hip, the OP is asking about PayPal, and you are talking about Ebay. Not same-same.

  5. Defend the stupidity, defend the absurdness. Defend... , by all means and I shall continue to observe and remark upon the inane aspects of Thailand, which there is a large category of.

Its culture, custom, practicality, not stupidity or absurdness. Why do you expect this country to follow the customs and practices of your home country?

Besides, a lot of the workers are doing 10 hour days, or working 6 days a week, so giving them a 1 hour lunch to maybe complete some personal business seems reasonable.

In Thailand, It may be the farang that are the inane. Just saying...

  6. Can someone explain why some bars were really closed. Some were sort of closed (Loi Kroh) and some were really open ( ta chang sanditham

Sent from my GT-I9300 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

Some were probably restaurants that serve alcohol. They can still do food.

  7. What's this "relaxed pace" crap?

You play fast enough to keep up with the group in front of you. You play slower then that and you're holding up the entire course behind you. You hold up play behind you, you should know those behind aren't speaking kindly of your existence on earth.

Man I'm not holding anybody up, but two weeks ago I played through three groups in 9 holes, I would have been happy to slow down to their pace. I also understand the ethics but its a game not a race. Besides we are talking mid week at Soi Dao usually not that many out there as I find most of the Thai men seem to arrive later than I do, perhaps its because I live quite close by.

Those weren't golfers you had to play through. Maybe business execs wrapping up a big deal? Bird watchers? Golf attire models on a photo shoot? Boozers trying to "finish another round"?

Not sure what they were, but definitely not golfers!

  8. Who wrights and prof reads this shyt??????????' Police in Chiang Mai province are hurting down a gang' key word being 'hurting'. Talk about illiteracy.whistling.gif

Maybe its what they call "Thai Justice System". Why arrest, charge, do the trial stuff when the police can just "hurt" them a bit and be done with it.

(you think you're translation of Thai to English would be better? - maybe it was auto-correct did them in and allowed you to piss about their English skills).

  10. I am not sure about UK banks but you can not do with most US banks unless you have signed in person an agreement to do so at a branch office. Normally Internet Banking does not authorize SWIFT transfers in itself. This is highly restricted as can be used to whip out accounts.

With a normal ATM withdrawal using card you should not be changed anything near 6% if you do not use DCC option (payment in home currency). Use another bank ATM if unable to do in Baht.

As suspect you were informed Bangkok Bank has direct transfer options from US and UK at cheaper rates if you open an account with them. Suspect Western Union would be a cheaper option than 6%

Don't know about most US banks because I have never had a problem doing SWIFT transfers using on line banking and I never had to sign anything. I have two US bank accounts. BOA is the most difficult one because I have to provide a OTP which I can get from a provided "Safe Pass Code Card" or by text message to a US based cell phone number. Some US banks require a phone call to make the transfer.

My experience is similar to pmarlin. I have initiated SWIFT transfers from here in Thailand. I receive an email a short while later (during normal business hours in US) telling me to phone bank to confirm. I use Skype, call the bank's toll free number so zero cost. The usually ask last 4 digits soc.sec.#, date of birth, mothers maiden name type questions to confirm.

  11. I do my taxes from Thailand via internet. I get all my tax forms - my Soc. Security statement and 1099's on interest and investments from several sources electronically. These business entities would rather do business electronically - saves them money on printing and mailing costs.

Since everything can be filed electronically, you don't need hard copies of anything in order to complete and submit taxes.

Now if I had an employer mailing me a W2 I suppose this might be an issue - but can't you have your relative mail you such documents? Or, if you don't care that they see the info, they only have to open the mail, take a digital photo/scan and email it to you.

  12. Don't drink and drive.

How else do you get home????

Sad to see yet another killed on the roads here.

    RIP

You don't go home. You find a vacant lot, hopefully next to a 7-eleven and you roll around in the dirt, sleeping it off!

I read about that somewhere...maybe on ThaiVisa.

  13. Every definition on my end says essentially the same thing:

Avalanche: a large mass of snow, ice, etc., detached from a mountain slope and sliding or falling suddenly downward.

You were the one misused avalanche, Spalpeen, So yes, we get to discuss your misuse of the term and you have to issue a mea culpa.

  14. Mr. Rome said disguising oneself in a CMU student uniform without proper reasons is punishable by a maximum penalty of 1 year in prison or 100,000 baht fine........hahahahaha, you should lock up the so called real students as well

So you're implying that the "real students" aren't really students? For Thais, CMU is a prestigious university - ranked 3rd or so in Thailand, in the top 100 - about 85 I believe - of Universities in Asia.. For Thais, it is a hard university to get accepted to attend.

OK, its not MIT or Stanford or Oxford or Dartmouth, but why you have to denigrate Thais, Thailand, University students like that?
