Dual Pricing in Thai Tourism: Economic Necessity or Hidden Bias?
MrMo replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I don't have a problem with charging tourists visiting from more affluent countries a premium for national, public amenities. I do have for foreigner living here though. Many such facilities will apply the locals rate if you can show a Thai driving licence. I do have an issue with the use of medical facilities. Those tourist who do not take out medical cover, that is their choice. But using government medical facilities even with insurance coverage is a problem as the government hospitals do not claim direct from the insurer. And they can take a couple of weeks, following discharge, to provide the insured with the documentation necessary for a claim to be made. Another aspect of government charging scales is that they are often higher than private hospitals'. Room rates, X-rays and CT Scans are examples. Normally up to 50%. But by how much depends on the colour of your passport. -
Thai Child Dependent Visa
MrMo replied to KruAlastair's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
I was on a guardian visa, that is I was responsible for my son, until he became 20. His mother and I lived together but were never married. Needed - 400k in the bank just on the day of application, - agreement of mother - two witnesses that I was caring for the boy - photos of us together in the home - our presence together at the Immig office It was so simple. When he reached 20 he could have become my guardian. Didn't though as last point a problem as he away at uni. Good luck. -

Thai emission laws transform: What drivers need to know
MrMo replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Why is it now in February 2024 that we hear of new regulations set to kick in at the beginning of this year quote set to kick in from January 1, 2024 unquote ? -
The "journalist" to whom this article is accredited, Puntid Tantivangphaisal, seems to be unaware of the concept of "innocent until proven guilty". Is this a direct attack on AI, which it is conceivable though unjustified if no alternative is offered, or a desperate attempt by the state's religion to defend its role in indoctrinating its views on how Thailand should develop. But then, over the millenniums, all states have used religion to maintain control.

Way back in the last millennium, it was raised to Baht 800 (though I remember not from what). (Forget all the "adjustments" about it needing to be in the account for month and months. Those rules came in as groups of farang passed around the same 800.) At the time it was raised to Baht 800 the grandfather rule applied, i.e. the new amount only applied to those taking a retirement visa for the first time. For the rest they stayed on the old amount. Allegedly some needed just 100 though it is doubtful that any of those guys are still breathing. What do you think of the chances of Immigration applying that rule this time ?

Of the 15 countries that are most frequently regarded as topping the list of better observing democratic practices, 9 are monarchies. These numbers are contentious as it depends as from where you gather the data. Let me assure you though, that Thailand is nowhere near the making either of these groups.

Resort Owner Shocked As Power Bill Soars Over 700,000 Baht
MrMo replied to webfact's topic in Eastern Thailand News
May be the lady would care to do a TikTok display with the pertinent facts or, as I would assume, just the one fact. If she bothers to read her bill. she will see that it tells her how many units her meter has recorded as supplying her with during the month. She will also see that the bill tells her how many units she has been billed for in each of the previous six months. Ours has gone from 1,700 to 2,400. It's the weather. -
What to do if Thai police stop you and attempt a ‘shake-down’
MrMo replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
It is my understanding that all police check road block must have an officer present and must display a phone number that you can call. Not sure that calling the phone number will be of much use as it is a police number but it will demonstrate that you are aware of the law. The question then comes "Are the police manning the road block aware of the law ?" -
Top Thai virologist says if you’re healthy “you can ditch the face mask”
MrMo replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Define Healthy please. -
Indeed a voice of reason ! If at the outset of the proposal the numbers were put up front, time and resources need not have been waste destroying a proposition from which Thailand's economy would benefit for years to come. Those numbers are: - Thai land mass is 3,200,000,000 rai. - Number of foreigners in Thailand is 3,600,000 (presumably, excluding tourists). If each foreigner bought 1 Rai, they would be, collectively, claiming ownership of 3,600,000 rai or to put it another way, - 0.0001125% of Thai land mass. What would be interesting to know is: - amount of land controlled by the government, its ministries and departments - amount of land owned by corporations (indigenous and foreign) - amount of land owned by the 1% - amount of land owned by the other 99%

Poll shows most Thais unable to earn enough to make ends meet
MrMo replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
On top of their current lack of income problems, the rice growing families of Isan and, presumably, the central plains are not going to get much out of this year's harvest. In southern Isan the rice fields are lakes of rain water having nowhere to flow. -

Viral Video: Lamborghini loses rear section in the floods
MrMo replied to webfact's topic in Chiang Mai News
Some years back our Honda CRV got caught in flood a in Buriram. The insurers said they do not offer flood protection (an extra Baht 500) as it never floods in Buriram. Cost a very few satang short of 60,000 to get the CRV back on the road. -

Presumably, the police will not be required to obey this law either.
