It's called The Bear Bar. I don't think I can post a link, but if you go to {the bar's name} dot com, there's a contact page with a phone number.

When you said your name was ChiangMaiTiger, I didn't realize it was the Richmond Tigers. Blech :-/
Any clues on who the mystery guest will be...?

Well I am a top guy; so I am going to come in blindfolded; then lets see how welcome i am after i have wiped out both armies....and the beers
Well, if you're going to play blindfolded, the guy I play with is in a wheelchair, I'm usually fairly drunk, so it should all be fairly even :-/

Being as facesious as ever...chess is a game for 2........you simply cant join in.
and 2 against 1 isnt fair
Actually, it's not a problem. Having one player play against multiple opponents is quite common. The top guys will even do it blindfold :omg: I also used to play a lot of Transfer, which is a team game for four and loads of fun.
But it would be funny to see the reaction if you approached 2 players and said "excuse me, can I join in"
As one of the guys jajohnson probably saw playing, I can quite definitively tell you that we'd be more than happy for someone to join in :-)

Sad to hear. I've known her for nearly 20 years, going back to the old place at the Bar Beer Center. Any details on what happened? I saw her maybe a month ago and she looked tired but not particularly ill or anything like that...

No worries. You can PM me when you get in town if you need any more info. I'm shodan and trained for quite a few years in Thailand and Australia.
-
It's been many years since I've been down there but since there're probably not many people who will be able to respond, I'll chip in.
As you would expect, it's mostly students wanting to give it a go, so most of the class will be absolute beginners. IIRC, when I was there, there was a western shodan who could explain things in English. But it's Aikikai, so there's not a lot of hard-core instruction - if you're a beginner, you should be right since the way they teach it seems to be "just watch everyone else and copy them" anyway :-/ (I do Yoshinkan, which is very different).

Can you clarify what exactly "do[es] not work" means.
If they at least turn on, I can help. If they don't even do that then, being a software guy , I can't help.

There was a Salsa club that started up not long ago, they might be able to help you.
There's also a latin night developing at Guitar Man. Del Ritmo play on Thursday nights and while most of the stuff they do is not tango, they might know a few songs. And I'm sure they'd be happy for you to dance... :-)

>>> Any jazz players or singers in Chiang Mai interested in a regular get together?
??? You don't like Tuesday nights at North Gate?

Since you want to use either DTAC or True then it seems straightforward, buy the i9100T as this definitely supports 850/1900/2100 Mhz 3G and both DTAC and True operate on 850 Mhz for 3G. If you want to use AIS then buy the i9100 as it supports 900/1900/2100 Mhz 3G and AIS operates their 3G network on 900 Mhz.
This gets to the heart of my question. The S2 is advertised as a 4-band phone, why should I have to commit to using a particular carrier? Or what if I go overseas - it'd be disappointing to not be able to use 3G because of some stupid shenanigans going on in Thailand.
I'd like to buy a version of the phone that runs on all 4 bands but every vendor I've asked has said the same thing, I need to buy the correct version for my carrier. As jackbox said, it doesn't make a lot of sense to be crippling a phone like this :-/

I'm looking at getting a Samsung Galaxy S2 and this is the first time I'm thinking about 3G.
AFAICT, the S2 is a quad-band phone that works on the 850/900/1900/2100 frequencies, but everyone in the shops is telling me that I need to get a phone that will work on my carrier since (according to one shopkeeper), Samsung is shipping units that only work on 850/1900/2100 (for True) or 900/1900/2100 (for AIS).
(*) Is there any real reason for doing this other than to segment the market?
(*) If I get a unit from True, will it be locked to them in any other way i.e. if DTAC ever get their 3G up and running (supposedly on 850), will the phone Just Work on their network?
(*) If I get a unit from overseas that hasn't been crippled like this, will it Just Work across all networks?
(*) One shopkeeper told me that it would be possible to "fix" a phone to work on all 4 bands but it would void the warranty. I'm guessing he was talking about rooting the device and installing a new ROM? I'm capable of doing that but I'd rather not unless I absolutely have to.
(*) There are reports that bands can be re-enabled via an engineering menu but I've also seen claims that some units are being shipped with receivers that can't handle all 4 bands i.e. no software fix. Anyone know anything about this?
I'm currently with DTAC but thinking about switching to True for their unlimited 3G Android plan.

I know a lot of the musicians around town and I can put you in touch with someone - really nice guy, played professionally for many years, speaks English reasonably well and I'm sure he doesn't charge much. PM me.
-
Shoot me an email (//removed - use PM function//) - I can do it for you quite easily.
I'm in Chiang Mai, BTW...

I've even heard about them asking for proof of accommodation (hotel bookings).
Yah, they asked that from me as well, although I just wrote them a letter explaining why I couldn't provide it (and a return ticket, as well).
As least they give you a little piece of paper listing all the documentation they want. I've been to places where they don't even do that and will deny you and not tell you why

Thanks for the info.
I got my last tourist visa in Manila and while it was a major pain the ass, once I gave them all the bullshit paperwork they wanted (they wanted a letter from my employer except I own my own business so I wrote a letter saying that I employed myself ), I eventually got it. Having a Japanese passport probably made things a bit easier
-
And I will be taking care of some business in Cebu anyway so will probably try it in September and see what happens.
Did you end up making this trip? I'm thinking of heading over and trying myself.

Anyway, went to Tokyo Joe's last week. Blues jam session; mostly Western musicians. Beers 70 baht or so. It was awesome. (Soi 24 Suk/Bkk)
Glad you enjoyed it :-)

I supply all pics and logos. Basic site 5-10 pages with shopping cart supplied by charge.com.
The most complicated thing is that customers have to be able to enter a special code at checkout to receive a discount. And that's not that complicated. Also, need a few pop ups to appear at checkout. Automatic e-mails need to be sent thanking customer for order. Big thing is it needs to be expandable.
I want a farang because I want clear, error free communication and I want the deadline to be respected. Also, farangs can comment on general copy, unlike most thai desgigners.
If you're looking for someone to put a site together, we can do it for you. Our contact details are here:
I'm based in Chiang Mai and am from Australia.
Original/new Music In Chiang Mai?

Sonnet & Alcohol played at The Bear Bar the other week, some pretty smoking hot indie rock.
Some of the guys in the band also do acoustic sets, also with a lot of originals.
