  1. 365 Sport still not back (mid-afternoon). I don't subscribe to Thai Expat TV but from what I've read in this forum they appear to be more responsive than their partner (?) 365 Sport. I NEVER receive any support from 365 Sport when there are issues, the only time I hear from them is when they want me to renew my subscription, otherwise my emails to them for support just go unanswered. Arrogance in the extreme. And, as someone mentioned, their website is down. If they are experiencing issues with their servers and content provision then why is the website also shut down? Very suspicious!

Interestingly last night I was unable to use the Android app Movie HD (movies and TV series), which has never failed me until now. It's up and running again today but I wonder if that was a symptom of the same problem. I'm guessing that slowly but surely the authorities, be they in the UK/Europe or here in Thailand, are starting to clamp down on these services, and potential viewers will be forced to scramble to find the ones that are staying ahead of the game.

i watch sentana every day 1am.-4am.i havent seen anything advertised so far,it was the same with the 6nations then true showed it at the last moment. could be FOX.

Sky Sports are advertising it so you will need a package that includes Sky Sports channels (not Truevisions).

  3. I'm a yank, but won't wear any shorts, shirts etc with US flag motif. Quickest way to indicate a person is Russian..... If crap happens, it happens. I am not going to live in fear. I'm too lazy for that

I'm from the States as well, but I've been mistaken for a Russian no less than five times since I arrived a year ago. No clue what makes me look Russian.

I'm not going to hide in my house, but I do think I'll avoid the tourist areas for a bit.

Define "a bit". Just when you think it's safe to go out again, then....KA-BOOM!

Statistically there is an equal chance of becoming a victim of an attack both before and after "a bit". Both small.

That said, and as other posters have noted, it's always advisable to be aware of your surroundings when out and about in public places.

  4. I'm certainly not a big fan of True but if they don't have legal access to the programmes, how can they re-broadcast them?

The NBTC ordering True to broadcast the games, seemingly illegally, reminds me of King Canute ordering back the waves.

True should have paid for the access but they refused. They were hoping that the NBTC would "allow" them to show the EURO 12 fro free.

True makes HUGE profits and was not willing to share some cost with others in order for us to have a working TV.

True made a mistake and they will have to pay for it.

Talking about HUGE profits: do you think Thaksin has a hand in TRUE?

Little history story: once upon a time (1984) I was renting a room in a 7-storey apartment block in Dusit district, Bangkok. A youngThai businessman (who apparently owned the apartment block) was in the process of setting up a fledgling cable TV business called IBC - they had their office on the ground floor. I used to regularly see a few farang technicians walking in and out the place, carrying technical equipment.

When the company had it's soft opening that year the businessman held a party on the rooftop and invited all the tenants along in, addition to the company employees. Nice chap (it seemd)! I was one of the few farangs in attendance. My wife remembers the businessman introducing himself and telling one of his aides - "make sure the farang has plenty of beer; farangs like to drink lots of beer, you know". This much is true (just not True).

Later he merged (bought out?) another fledgling cable company that was attempting to start up in Bangkok called UTV and the new company became UBC. Later they sold out to the parent company of what has now become True.

Did I forget to mention the business-man's name? Oh yes; Taksin Shinawatra. This was before he entered politics and gained the notoriety that he has today. The rest, as they say, is history!

  5. Really? not that it matters, but please do provide a source for such spellingwhistling.gif

For someone claiming "not that it matters" you sure do waste quite a bit of space posting about spelling mistakes. Get over it. We all know what was meant.

was that suppose to be an informative post or a troll response?

Jeez phl, you're like a dog with a bone. Give it up and get a life, child!

  6. Of course, if the regulator failed there wasn't much that they could. do.

Well, you could try shutting off the valve on the gas tank!!! DOH!!!

A regulator is the technical term for a gas tank valve. It's a valve that regulates the flow of gas from 0% to 100%.

No, A regulator is connected to the gas tank and controls the flow/pressure, the tanks in-built valve should be turned on to fully open during operation and closed when there is a leak. I dealt with many a gas leak and the only way to prevent an explosion is to turn the gas off before it reaches is ignition density.

Actually otherstuff1957 is partially correct. Most of the cooking propane cylinders supplied in Thailand do not have the master valve you refer to (they should but that's another issue). The tank is opened by directly screwing in the regulator which opens a ball valve seated in the tank, the regulator is then adjusted to supply gas to the cooking device. Maybe some of the more 'upmarket' restaurants and major hotels have more elaborate cooking gas setups in their kitchens with ways and means to shut off the supply quickly in an emergency, but I doubt if that is the case here.

  7. 280 KPH ??? That is 173 MPH , on a Thai toll way......This is clearly a case of Darwin's law at work. Perhaps in order to help ensure the survival of the hisos and their idiot off spring, these high powered sports cars should be speed limited...That would also have the double benefit of helping to stop the killing of other innocent people such as the other driver here who was killed.

Why would you limit the car? The car didn't drive itself that fast. The other driver that was killed was also driving excessively fast according to the article so maybe they were racing. If the car was limited they would just find a way to disable it. TiT.

A Fortuner doing 280km? I dont think so. To hazard a guess, Mr. Porche was screaming up the tollway in the outside lane and Mr. Fortuner, driving along as normal, changed lanes to overtake the third vehicle and moved into the right lane. Mr. Porsche, going too fast to avoid or slow down, slams into the back of him. Keep in mind if the Porsche hit the breaks just before slamming into the Fortuner, then conceivably he was going faster than 280km.

I doubt that the Porsche drove faster than 280 km/h. The fastest I drove was on a German Autobahn, doing 315 km/h. The so called tunnel view wouldn't allow you to drive so fast on a Thai toll way in Bangkok. May they rest in peace, hope there's no traffic where they're driving now.....wai.gif

315 km/h on the Autobahn? Really! Your driving prowess amazes me. Less impressed with your cerebral powers. There's only one place for 315 km/h and it's a professional race circuit, and not a public highway, albeit one without a legal speed limit. Incidentally the "design speed" for the Autobahn is 160 km/h!

  8. If the 5.3 afterquake today is huge, what was the 8.7 quake last week??

According to the Richter Scale a 5.3 quake is 4000 times weaker than a 8.7 quake, so definitely no need for a Tsunami warning.

    richter-scale.gif

Not necessarily true! Whether a tsunami occurs or not depends on several factors other than just the intensity of the quake. Perhaps the most critical factor is the type of displacement across the two sides of the fault: if the movement is lateral i.e. horizontal (no vertical displacement) then a tsunami is unlikely to occur. If the "throw" on the fault line is vertical i.e. if there is upward/downward movement of the seabed across the fault line, then there is an increased likelihood of tsunami generation. Last weeks major (8.2) quake was of the former type (lateral wrench type faulting), which is why a tsunami didn't occur.

  9. The outgoing deputy agriculture minister, Pornsak Charoenprasert said yesterday he personally viewed a Cabinet seat as "an asset you share with other people".

Typical politicians response. No mention of it being an honour to serve the country and its people; it's just an "asset" that you get to share with the other pigs jostling at the trough.

  10. "Chalerm concluded the event by saying that Bangkok residents could now celebrate the New Year without worrying about bomb attacks".......

......."and how, the multitude of people gathered did cheer at this joyous news, and the ones that wore the yellow shirts and the ones that wore the red shirts got up and danced and hugged each other, and the Lord from Dubai himself did ride in triumphantly from Suvarnabhumi and the people did strew the ground in front of him with garlands, and everybody lived happily ever after".

    And then I woke up!

  11. "Extortionate prices"? It's a free market, isn't it?

Actually, No, it is a monopoly controlled by the boat owners if there is no other means of transport.

A monopoly would be when one person or one company owns all the boats. That isn't the case here. Where I live there are laws against price gouging in emergencies. To me that has never made any sense. For example if I sold bottled water, and there was a tornado 200 miles away, why would I travel that far if I could just stay at home and sell it for the same price. However if I could charge any price I wanted to do, I might make the effort, and thus help meet a critical shortage.

The high price of boat transport will induce other boat owners to go that neighborhood, and thus by the law of supply and demand. lower the prices. And for every family that is "forced" to pay the high boat price, it only means that the good samaritans are able to help another family that really can't afford that price.

There was a report in one of yesterdays papers about a boat operator who tried to move in and operate his service on a street at a cheaper rate than existing operators. He was shot and killed for his efforts! Boat operators were also reported to be laying spikes down on the flooded streets to stop motor transport from operating. Seems like disasters such as these bring out both the best and the worst in people.

  12. Many micro organisms will survive brief boiling, you should boil for 5 minutes. If you use the type of kettle with auto shut off, leave the top open, then it will keep boiling. Boiling will not remove inorganic pollutants. For pure water collect the output from your aircon and melt the ice buildup in your fridge.

Collect water from your air conditioner, that is what I posted a while back, seems some people read what I say..ok here is another tip for purifying water ya may get from one of the vending water dispensers..

For those chemist get your pen and paper ready... here it is NaClo2, the name is Sodium ChloriTE, not sodium chloride (table salt) in a small plastic teaspoon, no metal put 6 drops of NaClo2 aprox 22.4% to 30 drops of lime or lemon juice...when let stand be careful to breath the Chlorine gas produced, important to let this process brew for 3 minutes..a yellow colour will appear after the solution is combined. FYI there is no chlorine in the liquid, just the gas produced the liquid now is called Chlorine dioxide, now you must use this product shelf life is limited to 1 hr, get the water you stored from the air condition that is now boiled and cool, add this Chlorine dioxide to it and drink it..ya can add some apple juice by NO VITAMIN C added a no no. Now you have just taken some 1000 times stronger than any "Aerobic Oxygen liquid" purchased at any health store, for only pennies!

I trust someone will forward this information to the Health minister soon: It is more effective as a disinfectant than chlorine in most circumstances against water borne pathogenic microbes such as viruses,[18] bacteria and protozoa – including the cysts of Giardia and the oocysts of Cryptosporidium.[10]:4-20–4-21

The use of chlorine dioxide in water treatment leads to the formation of the by-product chlorite which is currently limited to a maximum of 1 ppm in drinking water in the USA.[10]:4-33 This EPA standard limits the use of chlorine dioxide in the USA to relatively high quality water or water which is to be treated with iron based coagulants (Iron can reduce chlorite to chloride).[citation needed]

It can also be used for air disinfection,[19] and was the principal agent used in the decontamination of buildings in the United States after the 2001 anthrax attacks.[20] After the disaster of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, Louisiana and the surrounding Gulf Coast, chlorine dioxide has been used to eradicate dangerous mold from houses inundated by the flood-water.[21]

    Good health to you...

Yet another example of extremely irresponsible posting from a wannabe amateur chemist. You obviously haven't even bothered to read your own post and edit it for mistakes, or are you seriously suggesting that one should "let stand be careful to breath the Chlorine gas produced". Might one presume that the rest of your instructions are equally error strewn leading to severe consequences if anyone is foolish enough to mess around with potentially lethal chemicals if prepared incorrectly.

My recommendation to everyone is to stick to the simple common sense advice quoted multiple times in this thread; if you have to drink water you are unsure about the quality of, then make sure it is boiled for at least 5 minutes first.

Be very careful if you start to drink ultra pure water such as distilled or dionised it does not contain any bacteria, which you need to digest, and technically you can 'drown' with it. There are many documented cases of people dying from drinking pure water for too long.

As a retired (drinking) water plant operator in the U.S., I am appalled by the misinformation being given in regards to what constitutes "safe" drinking water. When you see water quality figures given only in terms of dissolved oxygen content or people suggesting drinking the effluent from air conditioners (!) or dire warnings against drinking distilled water, you can be sure these people are NOT the ones to listen to! Millions of people in Thailand are currently in very great danger from water-borne diseases! I would suggest the government greatly increase the distribution of bottled water supplies and that the people will boil water from all other sources AT LEAST five minutes. The very young and very old are particularly at risk. Coliform (fecal) bacteria will be present in virtually EVERY water source (except bottled water) for the forseeable future - get used to boiling your water! I pray for all in Thailand!

Finally - some common sense advice; well said. As someone else posted here, DGS1244's comments were nonsensical and irresponsible in the extreme

  14. Star Wars toys? He should get life just for that.

I knew an American Guy who's house was full of these toys who treated his lovely and gentle Thai wife like Sh**. The toys were more important than she. The house was full of this cr*p, she couldn't have proper furniture or dust these things (they were absolutely covered in dust, the toys that is!). Eventually she walked out on him. Strikes me as an obsession and these guys are probably quite well into the autistic scale somewhere. I wonder if the guy in Leigh had a mental health assessment?

    Autistic? Are you quite sure?

This tragedy was the result of a person who was clearly dysfunctional and presumably had anger management issues. Nothing to do with autism which is something completely different. To state so is to do a great disservice to autistic people and their loving families who can lead quite normal and productive lives.

Best you engage your brain before you open your mouth!
