  1. Just slightly off topic....... Can anyone tell me why 'The Dolphin Bar' has a large advert in one of the local rags? It boasts 'Hua Hins only Brunswick Table' and 'Outdoor swimming pool". I spent half an hour trying to find the sodding place on the map provided. I am certain - I mean really certain - that this is some kind of joke that the local rag have pulled. A stitch up just for fun. It must be. If it is - you got me good and I fell for it. When I eventualy found the place it turns out to be a tiny run down bar on a run down residential Thai soi about the size of my arse. No Brunswick that I could see and definatley no swimming pool. Im being serious when I ask this..... Was this some type of wind up? There was a random Thai woman hovering around and when I asked her if there was a swimming pool there, she looked at me like I just asked her the square root of nine.

Went to the beach this morning. Im guessing the garbage disposal guys must be on strike at the moment and the locals have decided to use the beach to empty there rubbish which includes, but is not limited to: energy drink bottles, plastic bags, nappies and empty food packets. It is surely a question of time before you will see the occasional broken washing machine or stained mattress down there.

I took a stroll around Bintaban on Saturday night. I seen some Nordic guys in sleevless Chang/Red Bull/Singah shirts having a brawl and got followed around some dive of a bar by a drunk midget bar girl with extraordinary teeth whos only English was seemingly 'you buy me drink'.

I have said it before and I'll say it again. This place sucks.

And before you ask again yes, I am leaving. Soon.

You have been offered plenty of places of interest to visit but you still just take a wonder Bintaban lets just hope you dont need to give 6 months notice befor you depart

    .

Typical reply there from another old grumpy hua hin ex-pat. I have not been offered pleny of places to visit at all. A couple of suggestions but to suggest 'plenty' would be slightly retarded.

Its truly pathetic how people get personal on this forum. "Lets hope you dont have to give 6 months notice" why do you say that? You want me to leave this place as quickly as possible despite the fact we have never met and you dont know me? Mate you can stick Hua Hin right up your a hole. I hope you choke on the place with your fellow old age pensioners.

  2. HuaHinFool,

If you want to be a tourist, there are other areas in Thailand that are better. I don't go to the tourist areas, bars in the Bintabaht area, restaurants in the Hilton area, or the main Hua Hin beach. Yes, if you hang out in those areas you are a tourist and should expect to run into same and pay the prices of same and see the rubbish left behind by same. Last weekend was a three day holiday and I suspect that's why the beach was so trashed. Thais do that, not foreigners mostly.

I go to the restaurants on the edges of town and lesser known sois and areas away from the tourists and the beach south of Takiab mountain and have a very pleasant existence here for a settled married golfer.

It works for some people but it is not for everyone; nor is Thailand in general.

Hi. I'm not realy sure what you mean by "if you want to be a tourist". I have lived in Thailand for a very long time, probably longer tan many people who post here. I dont 'feel' like a tourist because Thailand is my home and has been for a long time. I speak the language reaonably well, respect the culture and love the country. My only gripe is with Hua Hin. On the face of it it seemed like an ideal relocation but it hasnt worked out for the reasons I have said. My point is that aside from the tourist areas (which are bad enough anyway) I honestly cant find any areas where there are interesting places to hang out, chew the fat, play some pool and eat some nice grub.

Another poster seems to think my life is rather pathetic if thats all I want out of life. Well, it isnt..... I do other stuff away from HH. Its just that when I am here, I get bored. And I spend most of my time here. I honestly cant see the attraction with the place. You mentioned the three day holiday..... Come on buddy that beach is always naff.

Can I also just say - I have said on this thread a few times that this is a great place to live for many people and if you like it here, good for you. Thats great. It never fails to amaze me on this forum how people have a go at me for NOT liking it here. Its not my fault - it does not make me a dick_head - I just dont dig it. But look at Jhonny K's post below.... "Save time, leave now". In other words, 'bugger off'. Why the shitty attitude from some people? If I dont like it here, that does not make me an arse_hole does it?

  3. Hello all. Does anyone know where I can download recent Thai music? Is there a file sharing site anyone can suggest? Also I did try searching on iTunes.... Maybe I am doing something wrong but I just couldnt find any current Thai music?

  5. :clap2:

The fact is I am a single bloke.

    spot on ;):clap2::intheclub::intheclub:

Yeah it's spot on FOR A SINGLE BLOKE & no disrespect to HHF, but who in their right mind, AS A SINGLE BLOKE, would spend any time in HH at all ??

    I know i certainly wouldn't..

Its nice to see some people happy living here, realy it is.

Im running out of ideas.... Pattaya is too full on for me and I would be dead in 2 months if I lived there. Bangkok no good as I work from home and would be stuck in a condo all week. The provinces are too quiet and now everyone seems to think Samui and Phuket are <deleted> also. I have no clue of my next move its driving me nuts.

  6. I moved here 6 months ago. I made a very bad mistake.

I have lived in Thailand for several years and this is the most uninspired I have ever been. Its a boring 'one trick pony' town with very little to do. Sure, a certain revered person lives here but that is of no use to me... And as for the sodding relentless references to the train station, can someone please tell me what I am missing? Every street has some type of half arsed reference to the train station and market stalls everywhere sell crap t shirts and souveneres celebrating this building. It was one of the first places I checked out and as far as I can determine, its a very colourfull shed smaller than my house. And therin lies a glaring hint: Any place that boasts a train station and a palace which no one has ever seen must surely be avoided.

Restaurants: for the most part they are the same as everywhere else in Thailand. Thats not a bad thing of course, but there is nothing here that should be boasted about on a grand scale. The one good thing is the tourist market area that has some nice fish restaurants. You need to eat a lot of fish.

Bars: Rubbish. Soi Bintaban and area is the main place for bars. Out of maybe 100 bars there is possibly two that have made anything close to an effort. The rest of them are very basic beer bars with crap furniture and very, very, very ugly women, retired SAS captains and active MI5 spies. If anyone reading this has been to the bar area of Udon Thani, picture that scene basicly. I once posted about this before and got attacked for having little do do in life aside from wanting a nice bar. The fact is I am a single bloke. If I had a Mrs and kids, I would be pretty content to do other stuff but I am not. So when I am not working, it would be nice just a few nights a week to hang around in a bar with some good looking women and some sound blokes to have a laugh with. I have scoured Hua Hin and have found nothing even close. Someone recently suggested a place called Johnny Walkers whcih I gues I will check out but Im not holding any hope.

Aside from Bintaban, there are many ex pat bars dotted around the city but they are pretty dead. They mainly consist of townhouses with a shop front that some retired bloke has converted into a 'bar' to serve chang to his mates. I have been to a couple. Bobbys springs to mind as does Bob and Noks. Im sure you all know someone back home who has put a small formica covered bar in there garage in order to escape the nagging Mrs? Picture that but include a few retired blokes with very old jokes and boring golf anicdotes.

Disco: Hilton for Ferangs. The band is ok for a laugh but its expensive and full of old blokes either dancing like your drunken dad at a wedding or standing motionless, waiting for a freelancer to talk to them.

Ex-pats: Old. And a fair shair of pretty full on criminals. Check out Andrew Drumonds site for worryingly regular updates on retired crims who have just beat the crap out of some guy over a disputed land and house deal.

Land and House: Expensive to buy or rent.

Beach: I have a real issue with the main HH beach. Litteraly every couple of minutes you see a washed up jelly fish and the rubbish can often be out of control. What is it with Roi Haa Sip and Red Bull bottles littering the beach? Samui, Phuket, Krabi etc have nice beaches but more importantly, they are fun. They are actualy frequented by people who sunbathe, chill out, throw a frisby, float on a lilo...... HH beaches have none of this. You may see the occasional couple strolling along but realy they are baron. And I dont mean baron in an idilic way I mean baron in a 'no one wants to go there' way.

Locals: To me, they seem jaded with ferangs. I dont mean rude i just mean... Jaded. Indiferent. Cant be bothered.

Shopping: Market Village. I dont get it. The place looks amazing from the outside and its glitzy inside but what is there to actualy buy? I mean realy - answer that for me. What is there in this place that offers anything even close to say, Siam Paragon in BKK? It looks like Paragon. Its not that much smaller than Paragon. Its raved about like it is Paragon. But once inside it offers little. A Kodac shop. A Homebase. lots of clothes shops geared mainly in my opinion towards Thais. A KFC. A Sizzlers. This is No Lincoln Avenue or Oxford Street so please everyone, stop raving about it like it is just that.

Villa supermarket is ok if you need ferang food but expect to pay double the price of Foodland in BKK.

Maybe I am just tired of Thailand. I dont know.... I still think Samui and Phuket offers more and I am very seriously thinking about moving there. For me, it hasnt worked out.

Please dont bash me for this. Its my opinion and I am entitled to it.

  7. Not all of thailand is the same. you have to remember that samui is a business island. You go to the mainland where the people could choose to live a nd work on samui but they don't. the thais enjoy the normall happy life.

I have been in samui many years. I have me favour resrtants and friends and other places. i stick to them. then that is it.

Yes there are problems i come accross sometimes but then it is not much different back home. for example my brother had to take 2 days off work to wait for the cable repair men to come. back in the U.K.

On a business island which relies on toursime then now is a very dark time. the currency is very low. the prices propbaby haven't changed much. infact got cheaper. The baht is still the simlar price.

The fact is that people used to come here for the beer and woman and the fact that everything else was cheap. Have a problem explaining to the thais that forang do not have money same like before. Think i will not have to explain soon because less and less are coming.

If you have business problems. all i can suggest is close and move to some where cheap and live off your savings till the storm blows over.

Problem is that there is more and more development going on which means more compition. Which also means that big compaines are coming to under cut everyone. or most people.

The positive thing is. That if you have land and you are not desperate to sell. then the price will go up 1 day as on an island. they do not make any more land. That is unless samui get over spolt like spain.but i think this will not happen.

last words quoted from Nick Faldo. " Got to take the rough with the smooth"

good luck. You'll b back lol" they always come back !!

I love the fact that you quote nick faldo as the guy who started 'rough with the smooth'.

  8. understand how you feel, i left Samui 8 months ago and should have done it years ago, it taints ones fews on what Thailand can be like. as the wife says its not Thailand its Samui. cheap booze 90 baht for a san mig or heniken, Samui does not even have that. i now pay 40-45 in air con bars. i will never step foot there again, i had a debate with my neighbour before i left, was it Thailand i was sick of or Samui. 100% Samui looking back. most of the guys i know who are still there want out

    good luck

Can I ask where you have moved to?

  9. The guys who list "cheap beer and women" as there preference for staying..... You should not pick fault with them for this. Im sure at one time they could list 10 key reasons for living in Thailand but as time goes on and the years tick by, they realise that the other 8 reasons they may have given are viewed through rose coloured glasses. The bottom line is this: probably the most genuine thing about Thailand is the cheap beer and women. The rest of it could be described as complete and utter <deleted>.

One of the main bonus points for me when i first landed was the Thai Smile. It took me years to realize that hidden behind this warm and fuzzy smile is often a devious mind.

I used to loath the ex pats that used the cliche "Walking ATM". I just always figured they are twisted bitter ex pats with nothing better to do than complain. Sadly, as with most cliches, its quite true. We realy are just walking ATM's for many Thais.

I have tried so hard to come up with other key reasons for staying here but now i also am a member of the bitter and twisted ex pat club: After 7 years here I cant think of many other reasosn aside from cheap beer and loose women.

I dont let the other things bother me. It just washes over me. I still like it here but for my own reasons - not the reasons that TAT promote and definatley not for the Thai Smile or the "laid back nature" of the Thais.

  10. You can take on my house if you like..... I am moving out soon. Soi 102, 2 bed, 2 bath, brand new, walled and gated, modern style with small pool and raised sala above the car port. The house is situated on high ground at the begining of the hills so you have an awesome view of Hua Hin and partial sea view. Its a real nice place. 25K a month though I think the landlord may drop a few thousand as I just rushed in and agreed the price without negotiating.

    PM me if interested.

  11. Samui residents circa 2003-2005 will remember the ferang woman in her early 30's who used to get naked and stand around the center of Chaweng at random times talking to her self. She was as mad as ten bears. Tourists used to stare at her open mouthed. The police mostly just left her alone which is a blessing as she was on a huge overstay. I remember once me and a pal sitting on deck chairs on the beach and she sat down opposite us and just said "hey, wassup" whilst completley naked. Her legs were hmm, spread wide open leaving her bits to just hang out. It was surreal.

Rumours used to fly around about her but the most accepted rumour was that she was a pianist by trade and came to samui for some time out, ventured down the road of yabba and mekong whisky and totaly lost the plot.

Not to sound crass, but she actualy had a real nice pair of boobs - pretty dam_n huge also.

  12. Not sure if you wanted a literal answer but as far as I am concerned its pretty boring right now.

The main beach is full of washed up jelly fish every 5 feet with zillions of tiny crabs that crap eggs by the truck load. Insane traffic through the town despite the fact that there is nowhere to go apart from low class beer bars full of idiots or hi-so resorts with no atmosphere.

I have never lived through a hi season here so I have nothing to compare it to.

'Here' will soon be 'back there' as I am getting out of this place soon and moving somewhere more interesting :)

No offence intended to any long term ex-pats here. Just my 2 cents.

If you took the time and trouble, you would find that Hua Hin is one of the most, if not the most interesting town in Thailand. ...however you wont find it down Bintabaht which sounds like the only place you ventured

Well go on then.... Educate me. Yup Bintabant sucks I agree but I havent discovered anything else that floated my boat to be honest. Market area is nice for seafood but aside from that its just a street selling tourist tat. The areas around Bintabaht arejust full of boring guest houses. Soi 88 is like a quiet bintabaht. Soi 102 has a couple of small ex pat bars but if wanted to get pissed whilst drinking in a converted garage talking about golf would get pissed in my own garage. There are some nice resorts on the main road but what are you going to find there of any interest?

Koh Takiab (spelling) has a huge hill with a temple full of monkeys which is a giggle for one visit. The bars and eating places in that area are super quiet with nothing going on.

Feel free to correct me but where exactly are you talking about that is of interest?

    Cheers

Depends on what you're all about personally doesn't it or what you're looking for ??

I've just moved here, got little one in a so far so good School that she seems to like & has settled into, have a Gaff that i love, the Roads & Infrastructure is much better than where i've moved from, things like Market Village are beyond fabulous compared to where i've just moved from, we have the largest National Park in Thailand on our Doorsteep, the Fishing's good & cheap, ther'es no Brass everywhere you look & if i'm not mistaken, the locals in general seem much more nicer than those on Samui wher ei've just left..

    Life is good here..:)

Good to hear. I guess if you have wife and nipper this could be a great place to live. Good on ya :)

  15. Given that you have actually seen these Mortorola bricks at MBK why on earth did you not at that time enquire as to their useabiliy or not. You go on to say that MBK sell similar bricks but they are Chinese copies.

    Which is it?

Very helpful reply there, thank you. Not only am I apparently a little thick for not testing one, its also seems I have contradicted myself? Jeeez. Read between the lines..... Clearly I am talking about Motorola Bricks which have been replicated by the Chinese. Everyone else understood  I did not have the time when I was there to test one - I had been there for 3 hours and on my way out noticed a few stalls selling them.

I think they use the old AMPS system (800MHz) and that may have been closed down.

If genuine they may become collectors items?

I only seen the Chinese replicas to be honest. But yah the originals are starting to become collectors items now.

  16. Hi all. I seen a few stalls at MBK selling the old Motorola Brick phones - you know circa 1990. The huge brickk with a real long ariel. They sell similar phones in MBK - not actual Motorolas they are Chinese versions - its a pure novelty thing. Has anyone ever brought one and do you know if they actualy work? Its for a friend in the states.

    I

  17. Hi

Does anyone know where I can buy a real nice chess set in BKK? Its a friends birthday coming up. I need something where (for example) the Knights are "real" Knights actualy on a horse. You get the drift.

Sorry. Not the most interesting post but if anyone knows that would be great, thanks.

I also need some Muay Thai accesories.... Just shorts and the ceremonial headband they where before each fight. There is a shop by bts stairs but when I last went in there to buy a replica football shirt the idiot got his calculator out and tapped in 3500 baht. I walked straight out. Cant be bothered with bartering to that extent.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks so much

  18. The usual round of Thai police bashers have fronted up. Welcome!

The fact that he was nabbed at a UK port of entry means that the Thai, British and whatever third (or fourth) country's police successfully worked TOGETHER to ensure he was taken into custody in a country where he's unlikely to escape, pay-off a border guard or otherwise escape justice. This means that the UKBA's fledgling e-Borders system works and works well. It's not just for serial speeding ticket dodgers any more. Watch for the UK government wonks making much of this high-profile success.

For those waiting earnestly for Thai prosecutors to <deleted> up the extradition, keep in mind that it was a US citizen he killed so there's probably already an agreement in place that the death sentence will be taken off the table for the purposes of pissing off the civil libertarians and getting this suspect back to Phuket. After he gets inside the Bangkok Hilton, they can agree to restate the charges and punishment. However, before that happy moment, I would bet that he will be, through his counsel, claiming how he is an unwilling victim of steroid abuse, have come from a broken home, unlikely to get a fair trial, has a dieing mother and the usual stream of excuses.

Mate can you blame anyone for bashing the Thai police? Chalong Police (quote) "Hope to have the suspect in Thai custody within a week"....... How moronic can this police force be that they hope to have him back within a week? Its laughable - a real joke that they would even 'hope' for that LET ALONE announce it as a press release!

A week? Jesus.... They truly do have no idea. 2-5 years at best but probably never.

My guess is this: 5 years on remand in UK whilst legal procedures commence. No extradition. 15 year sentence in UK. Total of 7-10 years 'behind the door'. He will be out and free when he is in his mid 30's. Just my take on it I may be completley wrong obviously.

Personaly I would be pretty chuffed to see the guy extradited to a US prison. I would take a UK or Thai prison over a nasty US prison any time.
