  1. Will people interested in UniTEFL or obsessed with Matt please start separate threads on these subjects and stop putting off-topic posts here?

As far as latest developments go, my understanding is that CMU is now declaring that a large number of the receipts being presented by students are invalid and refusing to refund money. This info is from e-mails from other students, I decided it wasn't worth pursuing a partial refund on the three months of classes I was cheated out of.

HeyBruce: very sorry to hear that. Then you and others may be headed for a legal battle, should you wish to go that route. As a person who has taken others to court and won 4 out of 4 times (although I never collected on the last because the person skipped town), I can tell you that credibility is a 50% of winning a case. That means that if you are standing in front of a judge and can say that a person or organization has mislead you in any way , then it certainly isn't going look good for them. That means the issue of someone going around calling themselves Dr. when they are not , and admin knowing but turing a blind eye to it, is more central than ever. If you have any paper work signed 'Dr' you know who, hold on to that. It's a win-win no matter which side of the lagl fence you are on.

  2. ... Personally, I don't think that it matters if he has an unrelated BA or PhD...

He lectured post-graduate philosophy students at CMU for 6 years because he 'had' a PhD. I think it matters to those students.

Here's one of his lectures on the subject of ethics:

    http://cmulectures.b...ture-three.html

I believe 100% that he did give some lectures there and have never questioned it. In my opinion, if someone is highly sought after by a certain department, then they wouldn't just teach the occasional odd course there. They would be employed by that department fulltime and not work elsewhere in a mostly non credit/ non-faculty status institution – just like 99.9% of all faculty members do.

I also think that teaching the odd class shouldn't pose a problem for someone with a BA in Philosophy. How much would people studying sustainable development or any other major outside of philosophy actually know about philosophy? Probably very little. There are a lot of university students I've met who have never read a book by Derrida, Foucault, Heidegger or any other major philosopher. Well, if you've got a BA in Philosophy, then you would at least have read something, so one would be leaps and bounds ahead of the pack. This is no surprise at all.

As for the possibility of teaching without credentials, I've got a friend working at a major university in Thailand and the only thing his boss every asked to see was a black and white copy of his highest degree. So no surprise there, either.

  3. So your proof, is a biased web site with another person with an axe to grind. Not to mention the new information on this thread is him rebutting arguments posted by someone on ajarn website not as he claims, members of the tefl program.

Again Rob999 you have added nothing to this thread except proving that you have a vendetta against matthew. Personally, I don't think that it matters if he has an unrelated BA or PhD. He ran a successful TEFL course for 5 years and had many satisfied students. You are either the Robin that was fired from their course after one month, or you are another TEFL provider. You definitely have a serious issue against Matthew which has no bearing on CMU any longer.

If you really think that he doesn't have a PhDyou can go to immigration and the labor board and have him arrested. But you have to prove that he doesn't have it. Which you can't. The assumptions on the other web are not proof, just conjecture. Without his authorization you cannot get the university to verify it or not. So good luck with that.

So you think you know more than a faculty member at the University of Queensland? LOL

Anyone who has read the post knows that it makes mention of a misleading form letter sent out by former CMU staff. And you yourself sent out one of those letters on page 3 of this very forum (near the bottom). So how much are you being paid to monitor this board and write posts?

  4. Newbie:

None of the above is new. Been posted for ages. Suggestion by Alex Case that there are only two valid authorities or sponsors, Trinity or Cambridge, for TEFL or TESOL courses which somehow make them superior to all others is blatantly misleading. His demeaning of SIT shows an extremely limited view of the subject. I have no interest in this matter except honest reporting, and have no more use for his narrow minded suggestions (there is no accepted authority or measure of excellence in this field, and virtually no research as to outcomes) than I do for a certain "doctorate." Both are blather.

No, the detailed follow up on the his qualifications is completely new as of December 2010. And it's central to the issue here. I don't think that his qualifications are the only thing that he has misrepresented. It's very clear that Matt and former staff are posting here in order to put a spin on it all.

  5. CMU has admitted guilt. Knowing that they had no chance of winning in a Thai court of law where all the financial records showing that they are holding 26 million baht of former foreign students money, CMU has now settled out-of-court with 40 students who were bringing a class-action suit against them. If you are owed money by CMU, I would have your legal representative contact them straight away and get your money back!!!

Seems to me that Matt Kay also admitted guilt, as he was the first to actually pay out. They are both very guilty.

  6. We check activity on our Visa card every day on-line. Amazingly, today we discovered a credit issued by the Visa card people for the unused portion of Hubby's CEP. We'd filed a complaint with copies of relevant emails about a month ago. His charge was older than the 120 day limit for contesting a claim, so we weren't very hopeful. He asked just for the unused portion of his program (about 75%) and that's how much was credited to our Visa card account.

So, anyone who hasn't filed with their credit card company because their charge was more than 120 days old should reconsider.

I second this recommendation - have just received refunds for two undelivered courses, for which I paid by credit card 180+ days ago.

Seems to me that Matt Kay also admitted guilt, as he was the first to actually pay out. They are both very guilty.

  7. Checking if someone has a PhD is a very simple thing to do. The person writes a thesis/dissertation and it goes into the holdings of the university library. Then you can simply search the library for it like you would for other things. It's not rocket science and they are put there so that people can FIND them.

Matt has told many people that he did a PhD in 2004 at the University of Queensland, and for a long time his bio stated this on the CMU website. This is a fact and not hearsay. Lo and behold, if you visit the UQ library they state that all doctoral theses/dissertations are in their library and you can search for them using the online catalog:

    www.library.uq.edu.au/catalogue/theses.html

There's nothing there for Matthew John Kay.

All of the above has been recently confirmed (as of October 2010) by a UQ librarian.

If he actually has one, then why can't he simply just tell everyone here what the title of his thesis was and people can check? This would take two minutes and anyone who actually had one would be happy to share this information.

The reason why all this this continues is because he has failed to do so.

And why is this important? Well, for one thing if doesn't have one it would would be proof of intentionally misleading people for a six-year period...

BTW, I noticed that in Professor Rien's announcement he referred to him as Mr. and not Dr. – I don't think that was a mistake.
