You say everything is the same and bars close earlier. So does 1 hour earlier closing mean it's all over, that is the only difference really? Don't think that is going to change the mind of an expat who has been living here for years. If you get bored in Thailand then you don't know how to live. Get on a motorcycle take a ride, hire a jet ski for an hour, jump off Pattaya tower on the flying fox, go to Krabi and climb the hill at Tiger cave, sip tea at the tea houses in Doi Mae Salong etc etc maybe even have a few beers and fall in love with a darkling. Up to you but I fail to see how you can get bored.
Thanks for your reply. Many people have told me the same thing. But I did not come to Thailand to do those things. However, I did fall in love with a darkling and it was a disaster.
Also, I did not say that things were the same. I said they were NOT the same.

No. I am not confdent.
If and when the current beloved King passes away, I think there will much trouble here.

With the repressive and opressive government here to stay; why do you stay?
I have been living here for 7 months now and am bored to death.
This is not the Thailand I remember from the past.
I am a night person who likes to party. But, with the drug laws and early closing times, it's just not fun anymore.
I would be interested in hearing from similar type people.
Farangs who are married or working here obviously have a good reason.

I live alone in Bangkok with Bt76,000 monthly. It just doesn't seem to be enough.
I have heard many people's opinions about how much is enough. It really is a very personal thing and is different for everyone.
General rule of thumb is to double your estimate. I think it is a good rule and strongly advise you do that.

Don't know if I qualify for this post but feel like giving it a shot.
I am 52 years old. Have been pretty much of a "wild child" all my life and am very dissapointed in my choice to retire here.
I am a night person, "sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll" is my life style, even now.
I am bored to tears here. I remember when Bangkok was fun.
It appears that the "toxin" has spread all over the country and damaged it's people, as well as its night life.
I expected to spend the rest of my life here but now am thinking of going back.

Congratulations Carl.
Wish you good luck and success with all your new and exciting adventures and attempts to make Bangkok "rock" again inspite of the early closing laws.

What a buch of BS. How could anyone use him as a good example of anything?
IMHO he has actually ruined this country and it's people.

Good thread, let's keep it going.
I'm into Gothic and Industrial Rock.
We need a change from the same old music played all over the country.
Anybody have any suggestions

I've been taking Xanaz for 7 years now (prescribed by MD).
Tried getting off them several times but could not. They are extremely addicting.
Does anyone know if this shows up in a urine sample the police take when they raid a club?

28,000Bt!!!!!!!!!!!
My doctor at Bumrungrad just gave it to me when I asked for one. Didn't notice an extra charge for it on the bill.

O.k. Some are very general. If I pan it out it will be too big a poll.
Be free to add your own music if I missed any. Yes, I know no classical.

I'm a retired American who likes the night and came to Bangkok for sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll about 7 months ago to party until the sun comes up.
I sure picked the wrong place. Yes, there is still plenty of sex in Thailand (for a price) but where are the other 2?
I 've had to change my 30 year body clock and now sleep at night. Very boring; nothing to do during the day or night here.
I'm from NYC and really can't go back there and live a decent life style on my pension. So I am kinda stuck here for now. Will probably go to Florida with all the other American retirees and be just as bored but at least I'll have health care coverage.
Any suggestions in the mean time?

Good point. The news here (Thailand) and all over the world for that matter, is so censored that I've stopped reading the papers or watching it on TV.
Sometimes check on the computer for un-censorable info. like earthquakes or the possible rise of Bt 1 in the bus fare, etc.
Radio Bangkok on this website is pretty good too.

A lot of good info. in this thread.
I have been here 7 months and moved around a bit.
Always able to find a nice place.
Just get off at any BTS or MRT station and walk around.
You'll be surpirsed. Many vacancies at reasonable prices.
I currently live on Lat Phrao 17, one block from the Lat Phrao MRT in a 62 sq. mtr. room for just $6,500. No pool though. Very quiet building and neighborhood.
Carrefour is a short walk and Central Plaze is one MRT stop away.

Carl, you are on the right track. There are many "night people" still here in BKK looking for some place to hang out until the sun comes up.
I've only been here for 5 months and I'm pretty bored already as I stay up all night, sleep all day and have no where to go when I am wide awake.
Can't imagine a large city like this closes so early. I am from New York City, it never closes!
I worry about the toxin though. Be carful. I am also going to rent a large house or apartment and try to turn it into a kind of place you are thinking about.
Somebody has to do something.

Very interesting thread. I have been here for almost 5 months now and very dissapointed. I can remember the "old days" when Bangkok and the whole country was wild and wonderful.
It appears that the hey-day is gone and I don't feel the excitement. Getting a little bored actually. I live in Saphan Khwai. Perhaps I'll do what someone mentioned above, move to the suburbs and try to live a quiet life in a private house.
I wonder how many expats have left since "Toxin"arrived? This guy really scares me.

Thanks to everyone. I have learned a great deal from this website, Lobpuri, Axel, Dr. PatPong, et. al.
Will try doing it myself, as someone said, I have the time and would like the experience.
Bye for now.

I am here on a Non-Immigrant "0", multi entry, 12 month visa from USA.
I have the requirements for a retirement visa and documentation needed.
Do I have to pay a lawyer 10,000 Bhat or can I do it myself.
Thanks.

I am here on a Non-Immigrant "O", multi entry visa from USA which expires in July of this year.
Just went to Suan Phlu for my 90 day reporting requirements and was told I could not get stamped that I had to do a visa run?!
After some haggling, they gave me a 2 week extention and charged me 1900 Bhat.
Is this correct.
Thank you for your help

Thanks. I'll take the BTS to the Thanlo stop and go to Siam Commercial Bank.

Work permit is for a current account............but the poster should be able to open a savings account http://www.phuketgazette.com/issuesanswers...ails.asp?id=175
i recently opened a current acc. with Maestro card with siam commercial bank, no visa required, very good internet site in english as well, i also have a current acc. with Siam City Bank and a joint savings acc with my wife there, although i think they are abit behind the times, i have always been on a tourist visa, all i needed was a passport and address in Thailand. Having said that I have been refused from a few banks but i highly recommend Siam Commercial Bank
Siam Commercial Bank refused to open any kind of account for me. I need a checking account but will settle for savings acct. if necessary.
Thanks.
Goto the Thonglor branch of the siam commercial bank - they just ask for passport. The passport didn't even have a stamp in it because i just renewed it.
I've not seen anybody using cheques in Thailand; if you want to pay bills, just go to seven/eleven and use their PAYPOINT service. There's seven/elevens everywhere !!

I think you will have to supply copies of everything and two photos.
The medical cert. appears to be at the discretion of the officier.
Ohh, yes, one more thing, a little present for the nice policeman who is about to let you stay another year. Well worth the money.
Please advise on what is "a little present" to the guy who is authorizing another 1 year stay. I am new here and will have to go through this next year and a little nieve about this sort of thing.
I heard that you can not give money to immigration officials?
Thaks.

Thank you Toster. It appears that Thailand is not for me. I understand that this happens to about half the people who relocate to Thailand.
I have a ticket for May 29th.
