  1. Hi,

    Situation:

My wife is not well versed in cellular internet services. Earlier this month facts were misrepresented to her and she signed up for a AIS EDGE plan. Upon sign up she paid 49 baht. For subsequent months she'll have to pay 249 baht. Total internet time given per month is about 100hrs( UM was in minutes).

Turns out despite my protests, she signed up for it and turns out like i predicted it was enough for her monthly usage. Additional charges are at 1 baht per minute. This data plan has a contract period of 6 months.

I'm not in LOS now to see to the problem personally. We also live well out of 3G coverage.

    Questions:

Anyone knows how much I'll have to pay should my wife cancels this 6 month contract now? She's not too helpful calling the AIS service line(Shy).

Can anyone advice on DTAC and AIS unlimited EDGE costs?

I'll like to work out the cost benefits of actually canceling the AIS 100hrs plan and getting an unlimited AIS or DTAC plan immediately.

Thank you very much in advance.

  2. I wonder if you ever found a solution to this? Downloaded tomtom to my iphone and having the same "poor gps reception" issue.

How long did it stay in the "poor gps recep mode"..? I think mine was stuck once or twice, the gps picked up by itself eventually/. and yes i was on iphone 3G back then. read NOT 3GS.

Been using iphone's Tomtom for quite a while, it's more responsive upcountry then in town...

    Cheers

    Edited to add:

    Quote: InterestedObserver

"looking for TomTom support in Thailand and trying to make a mobile phone work as a car GPS"

3GS already comes equipped with A-GPS, no car kit required. For support, TomTom is reachable by email. they have a rather efficient team with quick response.

Lastly, TomTom Thailand for iPhone has been; and will be my primary navigating tool for the "foreseeable future" so to speak. This application makes my mobile phone work as an impeccable car GPS.

  3. How about a driver monitor system that records the vehicles speed as well as the drivers behaviour such as bursts of acceleration or excessive braking? Couple that up to a really, REALLY annoying over-speed warning inside the cab and a strobe light outside on the roof (like in Singapore) so that the vigilant Thai traffic cops (I know, I know) have an easier job of catching a speeder BEFORE the inevitable accident? Restrict these vehicles to left and center lanes only?

Where did you get the idea that Singapore cabs have a strobe light on the roof to indicate speeding? They did have a bell inside the taxis before, but it was insufficiently annoying to be effective.

Not on cabs. It's a thing from the 90's.. Goods carrying vehicles were limited to 50km/h back then and are obliged by law to have the strobes.

I actually miss the sound of the bells. If memory serves me well, it was from the old Toyota Coronas and Nissun Sunnies.

    Cheers

  4. Lots of arrows shooting about. Back to the topic for me,

I drove 150km to mukdahan and back today without knowing about the "safety program" ongoing nor the fatality report.

So with a fair and neutral mindset, I conclude that the campaign not effective nor efficient at all.

My route took me from 202 - 2169 - 2047 - 212, reverse the roa numbers for the way back.

On 2169 I did about 70km, pass thru a lot of "checkpoints" and was waved on once at the only manned checkpoint.

It didn't occur to me that anything was special since they normally have orange cones on the road where there's a bazaar or market and with the new year and all I was thinking there must be a lot of markets.

Did see guys in beige uniforms drinking and chatting at the check points. The check point which waved me on was manned by police officers.

I make this journey quite regularly and last visit to mukdahan was 2 weeks ago.

There are still speeding pick ups, incompetent drivers as well as a few I presume drunk from the driving manner.

These are my reasons for concluding the campaign a failure. I spent 30mins fruitlessly looking for Don's restaurant in Muk and in that 30mins had to perform evasive actions on 3 occasions.

My horn's my most precious asset today.

    Cheers to all,

  5. [but not to forget, the mentality of singaporeans has been shaped by PAP since the mid 70's. We are a bunch of people who follow rules, abide laws, can't chew gum, pay for a certificate that entitles us to own a car and yes, we are dead scared of our government. We achieve conformity by being scared sh1tless of complaints while complaining at every single opportunity we get.

From what you said i presume you are a singaporean...if you are not happy with your country  you can also migrate elsewhere..

Thailand is not a bad place... :D

    Hi chuang,

Nice suggestion but you're one step behind.

Already stepped out of Singapore, please read the entire thread instead of practicing selective reading.

However, migrating is redundant. I am living in Thailand while enjoying the benefits that the Singapore Passport offers.(Henley Visa Restrictions Index)

Not to mention hospitalization subsidy and other perks.

Despite the rising Baht, money coming in from Singapore still goes a long way here.

To sum it all up, I'll take what I enjoy and b1tch about what I don't on TV.

    Have a pleasant weekend.

Remember the slogan 'Sentosa - Where The Fun Never Stops!'.

This was true for the simple reason that the fun never started -- it was as dull as Titov Veles.

I'd like to see Singapore try to manage Phuket -- the people who always tell others how to behave versus people who have never listened to a word they are told.

Are you saying the levels of corruption in Phuket compared with Singapore are not relevant to the topic

As I say I dont like the glitzy side of Sentosa but there is certainly more choice in Sentosa

    caf

Well said caf, my sentiments exactly.

    Cheers to all,

  6. I feel for you, I really do :) I didn't want to chip in on this thread, not being in Isaan myself but the comments about the UK and your low temp intolerance makes my comment kinda on-topic (I hope), If it was 17C here I'd be outside in my shorts!

Just had a conversation with my g/f (up in Chiang Rai) and we did the usual (her) "I'm so cold! Now it's near near 15C!" cue me rolling about laughing! -2 outside and, maybe 15C in the house with the heating on full blast!

I don't think we have a tolerance for it, just got no bloody choice! :)

Anyway, I hope you warm up a bit and get to feel more comfortable.

For the guy who's arriving here.... wrap up warm mate!

    Cheers,

    Biff

I have arrived - been back in the UK for a week. I am not suited to -2, especially where the wind-chill factor takes it down to - 10.

Had the same conversation with my GF this evening who was complaining about how cold the wind was - outside temperature 21 degrees, inside 25 !

Only 3 weeks to go :)

Stop counting, makes it easier. 3 weeks will fly by I assure you. I know you can do it. :D

And please come back as soon as you can, your beer's getting cold... ^^

    Also,

Dear Biff, everytime I read your post I feel a little better.

Thanks for making my day. It may be cold outside, but knowing that someone whose face I don't even know yet feels for me makes me warm inside.

    Cheers to all,

    Sinblesser

  7. I'm screwed.

    It's 14'c tonight and tomorrow.

It rained early today morning and from noon till now the wind's been absolutely ferocious.

The cold I can live with, it's the shower time that's murderous.

I played soccer for 4 hours and my shirt was dry.

My dogs are crying in my yard.

Even my in-laws and shaking. My heart goes to the villagers that live on the edges of the paddies. I hope they have a good fire going. But given the wind and the dry landscape, any fire's gonna become a serious hazard.

  8. Why is TH so corrupted and SIN so clean? They are not even far apart.

    IMHO,

It is easier to take care of a small country. Think of it as cooking for a family of four versus cooking in the cook house for a battalion of hungry troops.

When Singapore says that the entire country's 3G network has been implemented, in thailand's terms it will be implementing for an amphoe.

But not to forget, the mentality of singaporeans has been shaped by PAP since the mid 70's. We are a bunch of people who follow rules, abide laws, can't chew gum, pay for a certificate that entitles us to own a car and yes, we are dead scared of our government. We achieve conformity by being scared sh1tless of complaints while complaining at every single opportunity we get.

I gave up complaining over 20 years ago and just walked away. I have not paid them taxes, nor have any money held in their CPF since 1989.

The term 'corruption' has to be defined and measured. How much corruption is there in North Korea? When laws and rules are written to benefit a few, and imposed on the many, will you be able to define corruption?

As mentioned in Animal Farm - "Some are more equal than others".

Not too sure about animal farm, but you and me, we're thinking along the same line. Very comforting to know that.

    Thanks pal,

  9. The singaporeans have been fleeced by their rulers for ages for the right to own a car, to hire a maid, to use the roads etc., so the singaporean government can sink billions of taxpayers money into Lehmann Brothers, AIS and others.

very well said, but I give the government credit for being able to put things in a nice way to the citizens.

I can list a whole bunch of bull crap that has been spoon fed to the republic.

    Hence said, who am I?

I am a Singaporean; and Thailand is my Mexico. :D

I see things in a different way and calls myself "not the typical Singaporean". I do not get blinded by false fact feeding or news sugar coating.

But I need an electric blanket in Thailand!! lol..

What a piece of news, good day to all. It's beautiful today, nice and warm.

    Cheers

very good.maybe we can have a beer in your mexico next month. :D

    Be my guest :D

Sorry for the delayed reply cowboy, had issues at home in Singapore. Being forced to head back tomorrow to SG, I'll be back just before new year's day. Let me know when you're avaliable next month.

Cheers and happy holidays to all,

  11. I think that would be hard to achieve. .

well it may be easier than you think. or perhaps the singaporeans can start learning how to cook, chew, and swallow their elecronic chips and SGDs.

"Singapore thinks..."... who cares what singapore thinks? they can think and say what they want but the fact remains the countries they criticized and those who lead them aren't likely to lift a hair to change anything.

I think, you think... Everyone have thoughts and ideas.

You lift a hair, you start changing things. But you begin by noticing what's been said about you.

If no one said nothing about anything, there will not be change.

    *Eleborations avaliable if needed

    Being sensitive, is an asset.

  13. Where would Singapore be if Malaysia and Thailand cut off their food?

Malaysia will bide their time and choke Singapore into submission.

    Food security, Singapore has none.

I think that would be hard to achieve. Malaysia and Thailand are not the only food exporters exclusive to Singapore. Aussie pork is very much relished in Singapore.

What would happen to the trade economy if the money from exporting food stops suddenly because someone higher up wants to starve Singapore?

Will singaporeans die of starvation first? Or will Thailand and M'sia traders/food producers be poorer from income losses?

When you're the one buying, you are in the driving seat.

It used to be water isn't it? Till the desalination plants and the Newater program got up?

I can foresee the same with food.

  14. [

Face it, Singaporeans look down on everyone, including their own, if they are not Chinese. This is one of the most racist societies in ASEAN!

The authoritarian Singapore government does not tolerate any dissent and will sue, then jail, then bankrupt, then bar from politics, any popular opposition leader who dares speak against it.

By the way, this is the government most admired and envied by past PM Thaksin.

The part about looking down on non-Chinese, appreciate if you can elaborate? Singapore values racial harmony and the current President is of Indian ethic?

About oppositions who dare to speak against, I fully agree.

  15. Singapore actually do have four seasons. Hot, rain, hotter, hottest.

    Alright that was lame... 555...

I cannot reference all of Thailand but it is much much hotter than issan in cold season. I'll say Singapore is as hot; if not hotter than issan in April. We are a concrete jungle.

I know 17-19'c is nothing to you guys, but I am not used to it. Hence big worry for my folks who's comin over...

The cold isn't too kind on elder folks who lived in warm climates all their lives.

  16. @afarang

I'm about 40km east of Mueng Roi Et.

The electric blanket, I'm dying to get me hands on one. You had to ship it in from Australia, any chance I can get one in LOS Issan? Reliable brands?

Last night was evil, I went to a bungalow in Yasothon just for the hot water shower. Stayed there for two hours till 9pm and went for groceries at Big C. Was about 10pm when I started my way home. GUESS WHAT...!!??

18 wheeler hauling gas overturned, my only road was closed. 20km journey became 74km.

Anyone affected by this? Chang Sanit 23 from Yasothon towards Surin?

    @Prakhonchai nick

I'm a suck3r for cold I admit. I do not hail from a cold place unlike most here. I'm from Singapore. A tropical, humid and HOT island country.

    @Bergen and Barryofthailand

Your tolerance for cold is commendable. Both you not messin with me right?

    If I'm at 21'c I'll stay indoors.

If I'm at 17'c I'll stay in bed and hibernate till it's as warm outside as under the covers..!!

    Cheers to all.

  17. Windy in Buri Ram, and even a bit of rain early Wednesday morning. The wind's still not a consistant Northerly, but the cold change is coming.

Went to the temple this morning to offer food at 7am.

    It was unbearable outdoors.

If it's gonna get colder, I'm gonna get more firewood. You guys enjoy bonfire as much as me? I love it.

But seeing how everything is so dry at the moment, there's a serious concern on fire hazard. So far I've been only managed a small fire in my yard. Not at all fulfilling.

Why isn't sitting in front of the fire with grill and beer a national past time?

We should have a get-together cook out or some gathering.

    Cheers~

  18. Oh,Dear, got lost got very lost , this time. Back to school, to brush up on his Geography.

I bet he couldn't find my feet for me - let alone the dangly bits ! :)

Wow, the basher got bashed...!! In the cold I hope... :D

Sure is windy today. I woke up this morning, saw cooking pots base jumping off the shelves in my neighbor's and there was this red plastic chair that did a perfect drift on the road right in front of my house.

Google weather says it's gonna be a chilly 17'c tonight...

    How's everyone else doing today?

  19. I judge it by whether my shower can be cold (cool) or whether I need to set the thermostat to warm.

Right now I am having to set the thermostat. I am actually loving this season and I hate the thought of going to UK next week, for one month. Whilst it can get hot during the day it also seems fresher and riding the motorcy is a cooling experience (until May/June when it feels like someone has turned on a hair dryer :)

Good luck on your trip bro, I have to boil my own hot shower. Having major changes to home soon. So i'm putting off the installation of proper grounds till then. No good ground now = no hot shower.

I totally agree with the fresh part but i hate moving around on the motorcycle. i drive with the windows open thou. And when the "hair dryer" comes i'll close em and turn on the a/c where ever i go.. lol..

Absolutely,my hot water heater is on every morning, love my hot shower. My sympathies to you ,having to leave next month. please don't read the weather reports for over there. Before you leave.

It gets so cold here sometimes i'm thinking hot water shower, heated toilet seat and central heating system that covers the toilet. Alright alright, i'm a puss when it comes to cold..

Here in Korat the highs have been from 31 to 33, and the lows about 20. Last year we only had a week of cool weather. This year it is cool in the evening from the end of October to present. Hope it gets a bit cooler this month and next as February usually starts to get warm in the evenings again.

    Barry

So back to my original question, does the cold comes at a slightly different time each year and lasts for different duration? for it seems that this year is quite a bit different from the last. Sure am hoping next year will be similar to this year but who knows. Are we affected by La Nino in anyway?

    Cheers,

    Sinblesser
