I got a retirement visa in 2015 ... really didn’t want it ... went to get a marriage visa, but was told to "get retirement visa, easier (for them, as it turns out)".
At any rate, got a retirement visa, despite the fact that I’m not retired and wasn’t planning to spend more than a few weeks a year in Thailand until I actually retire (5 years out now). Only one time have I spent more than 45 days in the kingdom, and never more than 90 days. However, since my visa renewal date is in January, I’ve been able to renew on annual holiday trips. No worries. I managed to get back in late 2019 to renew.
with covid, can’t get back to Thailand .... my visa expired today. I called the Thai embassy in the US ... no help. Can only do new visas. Back to square one.
Anyone else in this situation? I’m guessing I’m not alone.
Will be interesting to see how it goes when we can actually get back into Thailand. Not looking forward to the paperwork and fees.

Maybe we can make an estimation ourselves. I live in Korat, and do my retirement extention begin september. The extention has a number. The average number for the last 4 years is 4500. So that means in a year the korat immigration issues about 6750 retitement extentions a year. The most expats live in Bangkok, Pattaya, changmai, pucket and udon thani. If people from those regions make the same estimations for their province, we can see if we come close to the 72000.
There are only about 700-800 in Kalasin. That's why they make us drive to Sakon Nakhon :((

I wouldn't worry. The government issues proclamations on a weekly basis and then does absolutely nothing. No alcohol to be sold near schools, strictly enforcing the law about riding in the back of pickups etc. Last week it was supposed to be fining motorcyclists who ride the wrong way/on the sidewalk/without helmets. Next week it will be something else. Pissing off nearly everyone in Thailand, as well as businesses that use FB as customer contact, would cause a revolution.
Hey, at least they don't sell alcohol between 11 and 5 or on public holidays.
.... except I know that one place .... oh yea, and that one .... oh yea and that one too ... oh, never mind ...

Funny how a city of 8 million can have 30 million FB users though.
Why I don't always put much faith in statistics.

This represents an opportunity - for VPN providers
Problem solved.
That worked in China for about 4 or 5 years before they figured out how to hack the VPNs ... I suspect it wouldn't take Thailand long to "borrow" that knowledge from their good friends.

50th out of 65 isn't good.
I can just imagine where it would be if Abhist hadn't started to improve it.
It would be nice to have a one year report on how the Thai education has performed with there free tablet's.
I am still amazed at their ability to work with electronic thingamajigs and inability to tell you how many apples they would have if farmer Zack gave them 3 and farmer John gave them 2 and farmer Jill gave them 4 with out a calculator.
I read an article a while back in one of the Thai papers saying the tablet scheme was basically a failure because they gave them to first graders who had no clue what to do with them other than play games and they didn't properly train teachers, etc. on how to utilize them.

Seems there is a correlation between English ability and math and science. Vietnam clearly teaches English.... And they fared well.
Malaysia in recent years changed from teaching math and science in English, to mandating it be taught in Bahasa. Now they are reportedly lamenting that graduates are not competing for jobs in the global market (and for international univeristies).

Phuket is going in the same direction as Pattaya.
Not quite, as you cannot easily get to Phuket from Bangkok for weekends. Lots of Bangkok Thais in Pattaya on weekends and holidays.

I saw her on a British network the other day.... What I took away was how poorly she answered questions. Shocking how incoherant she is for a PM.
Lost my retirement visa today ... anyone else?

Thanks for all the replies ... to clarify, there was a time when I was entering Thailand 2-4 times per month for short stays. They started hassling farangs that entered Thailand a lot. I got questioned a few times. The retirement visa made things easier and the money in the bank requirement was no big issue.
I was also ... at the time ... silly enough to think that being married to a Thai would gain you some deference with the thai government. The long term visa seemed like a good idea.
going forward, will likely just do tourist visa until I actually retire. Then I will need a longer term option and will evaluate what is the best option at that point.
