  1. Once again those that are know all know nothings on this site speculate and proffer suggestions of blame, or the possibility of others escaping blame.<BR><BR>Sadly a woman has lost her life, whatever the circumstances, her husband will no doubt be distraught at his loss, once again no matter what the circumstances of her death, or whether or not it was as a result of him falling upon her, and also their extended family, and possibly children will be devastated.<BR><BR>My sympathies are extended to them all,<BR><BR>When making my reply I noticed that three members and sixty eight guests were reading the topic, given the quality of the posts so far any of those guests could be forgiven for assuming that the majority of members on Thai Visa Forum who contribute to these items are idiots. Its about time that you moderators got your act together and took matters in hand, speculation without anything to back it up should be regarded as 'off topic' and deleted, this would certainly reduce the number of irrelevant posts.

  2. It always amazes me how so many know all know nothings on here jump to conclusions or make statements without having any idea of the full circumstances.

It is quite possible for a Thai girl to be so distraught from a relationship ending that she tries to kill herself. You may wish to know what reference I am quoting from my own comment or statement. Well it is from personal experience, having dragged a Thai girl out of the sea at the bottom of Pattaya Klang, who had attempted to drown herself following her relationship ending. This was a serious attempt at drowning herself as it took a little time to get her breathing again. Fortunately having been a dive instructor, I was able to do so before letting the EMS take charge of her.

  3. I do apologise in advance if this question has been covered previously as I'm sure it has.

I've been looking through the Web pages of a guest house in Siem Reap, they list a number of destinations available by bus from Siem Reap, one of which is Pattaya. The cost $17 - $25. Do any members know the operator of this run, and information as to if they do the reverse trip (Pattaya - Siem Reap). I do see this trip offered in Pattaya but at Bt1500, its almost double the fare quoted on the web site for Siem Reap - Pattaya . Just planning at the moment, as have friend coming from UK to Pattaya for six weeks from Nov 1st. and trying to organise several excursions for her.

    Thanking you all in anticipation

  4. ^OK, you have 2 machines, a notebook that has a function key (F8) to toggle between internal and external monitors and a laptop that doesn't.

On the laptop you'll just have to try the way I suggested. You won't see your dektop picture and icons on the telly, just a blank screen.

Launch your video application and click and hold the top left corner and drag your mouse (or touchpad) to the right and the app should appear on the telly.

Otherwise put the vid you want to play onto the notebook that has the toggle and watch it from that.

Edit: this way works fine on a 5 year old Dell I have as well as an older Acer that I used previously.

Don't want to use TV to watch Video's, have DVD player for that, want to watch UK TV and need to use laptop as it has more memory than notebook otherwise I'd just use notebook and forget about laptop

  5. Try pressing the fn key at the same time the F5 key and you should get a picture of three screens, you want the middle one so press F5 once!

The F5 function key on my laptop has 'crescent moon' symbol on it, so I'm not sure if its function is related to the monitors or display, The F4 function Key has a TV sysmbol on it, but it only alters the resolution on the Laptop. On my notebook the F8 function key has two monitors on it, and this will produce the picture from the notebook.

The laptop does not appear to have a function key to perform the task required.

    What do you mean?

On my computer it's F7 and will switch between external monitor and notebook, but only when the monitor is connected. If not connected it reverts to the notebook display after a few seconds. Are you trying it with the telly connected?

I have a HP laptop, and a Eee Pc notebook, the notebook works fine in displaying on the TV, the F8 function key has the symbol of monitor & TV on it and I only need to press this for my desktop to display on the TV.

On the HP Laptop being some six years old, the function keys differ from later models, It was initially suggested I press the F5 function Key which has the symbol of a crescent moon on it, this did not work, it was then suggested that perhaps it was the F4 function key, but this only changes the screen resolution on my laptop, you suggest the F7 function key, this key according to the symbol is for decreasing the brightness of my screen display. I can't understand why I should need to use any key for an external display to appear. A couple of years back my laptop developed a fault on the screen in that it had white lines on it, in order to check it was a screen problem, rather than a graphics card problem, I plugged in the LCD monitor from my strand alone PC, it displayed the desktop from my laptop straight away, the only difference being the resolution it displayed it at. I do have of course the TV connected when trying out these suggestions.

  7. Using Windows XP go to Settings>Control Panel>Display>Settings> click on screen 2 and select (multiple monitors) and check 'extend my Windows desktop to this monitor'

Worked fine for me last week (though not same equipment as you) to watch a movie.

You might have to drag what you want to see (eg. Media Player) from your laptop window onto the telly screen.

I tried this and it didn't work, the desktop did not display on the TV, a message said I had to confirm the settings in six secods or it would revert to the earlier settings, I let it revert, but when it did this I had a plain blue screen instead of the picture I use on my desktop. Putting the picture back on as my desktop, I now find that the text below the icons on my desktop are all in little blue boxes whereas before only the Icon and text were displayed as if on top of my desktop picture. I've tried to get back to my original display, but can't find how to get rid of all these little blue 'text' boxes under the icons

  8. I have an older HP Laptop a Pavilion xd8007ea, that I bought in 2005 I want to connect it to a 32" Samsung TV. I have the correct cable to do this, but can not get the TV to show the display from the computer. I have an Eee PC notebook that I have connected to the TV and it has a function key that allows me to either have the display on the TV only, or on the TV and the notebook, or just the notebook itself. So I know the TV is OK and also the connecting cable. On the HP Laptop there does not appear to be a function key for an external display, the F4 key only alters the resolution on the laptop screen. Previously (couple of years ago)I have plugged in a monitor from another computer into the HP Laptop, and it has displayed straight away. Since that time however I had to have work done on the Laptop due to it crashing, and wonder if any settings may have been altered. I hope the foregoing information is of help in answering my question of how I get the laptop to display on the Samsung TV. Being not very computer literate I would appreciate any help - but in the simplest form of instructions possible!!, Many thanks in anticipation.

  9. If you have the time, go up to Tam Lod ( Soppong on the Pai/ Mae Hong Song Road) Go to Cave Lodge. John, an australian who has lived there for 25 years is an expert in caves, good trekking and canoe rafting too ( Not bamboo rafts, proper inflatables, great fun) Website is I think www.cavelodge.com. This would be proper caving.

For 'commercial' caves, I know the one at Chang Dao on the 1317 road to the Sankamphaeng Hot Spring, worth a visit, about 30 Km out of town. ( the hot springs are OK too).

    enjoy yourselves!

PS motorbikes are cheap and once out of town the traffic is OK. Wouldn't suggest tuk tuks, can't see, noisy and wil almost certainly charge your more than a 'red taxi ( songthau).

self drive cars around 1000 Baht, driven car/minibus a little more.

Thank You, Thank You!!!, The web site suggested was excellent and seems to encompass all the things we are looking to do in one place, with the exception of visiting the temples in and around Chiang Mai itself which I have done before myself and organising that not a problem. Have Plenty of time to get organised for this and other intended excusions ,Ankor Wat, Phi Phi, etc. As friend has just advised me arrival date 31st Oct. for 6 weeks. Once again thank you for reply and excellent information

  10. Hi,

I currently live in Pattaya, but have a friend coming to visit in early Nov for about six weeks.

We intend going up to Chiang Mai for about a week, in which time we will visit the Temples in and around Chiang Mai, take a three day hike, and visit the two cave complexes that I understand are about 40K & 70K respectively from Chiang Mai.

I was in Chiang Mai myself earlier this year and hired a Tuk Tuk and driver for a couple of days to visit the temples .

In the foyer of the hotel I stayed ( SK House 11) there were brochures on hiking trips of varying durations and itineraries. As I didn’t have time for one at the time I didn’t take a lot of notice of the companies offering these, and a request for more information from the hotel drew a blank, presumably as they wanted to have me book through them so they’d get their cut. But needed to know all the details before booking, so is there any member in Chiang Mai that has information on these companies that provide the treks, with their web sites so I can see what’s on offer.

With regard to visiting the cave complex’s, some sites suggest hiring a songthaw, does anyone know what the cost of this would be, and how would it compare with hiring a car for the day. I know hiring a motorbike could be a cheap option, but 70K and back on a Honda Click isn’t appealing.

Any information would be gratefully received

  11. I've just spoken to someone who has a business in the UK and returns there every month for about a week, whilst in the UK this time he wanted to renew his Non Immogration 'O' visa (he's over 50) (was not a retirement visa) and he was asked to provide proof of income backed up with copies of bank statements in the same way the requirement for a retirement visa. It was the Hull consulate he was using, and they told him that this now was a requirement. Is it just the Hull office that is making up its own rules, as the last requirement I read they were asking for last year was a valid lease on a property. At the Birmingham consulate its sufficient for them to see by your passport you are over 50, and the visa is issued in minutes.

First you need to read through most of this thread before posting, this thread is informing people of changes at both Consulates you mention

Summary - Hull you need to be married to a Thai and provide marrage cert translated into English or over 50 and provide proof of income of greater than 900GBP per month, Birmingham is slightly less clear but I would not assume it is as you state above

I only made the post to provide the information regarding someone who had used the Hull consulate in the previous few days.

I would suggest that you do not make assumptions about Birmingham and suggest what I say is not correct unless you have actual knowledge or personal experience of the Birmingham Consulate yourself. The information was based on my own experience at Birmingham recently, where I found the Consulate staff friendly and helpful, and I recieved my Non 'O' visa with no more documetation (other that the application form) than my passport showing I was over 50.

I sometimes wonder why members take the trouble to try to provide information, mainly from their own experience in order to help others, when people like you dismiss it, without having ay personal knowledge yourself. Your 'Know all know nothing' attitude certainly discourages me from bothering to post information which may help others.

  13. Buses leave pattaya for three destinations in Bangkok every 30 minutes, thats 6 buses an hour, from around 4am to 9pm , about fifteen hours a day , or 90 journeys a day, around 33,000 trips a year, bad driving or not, with this number of movements there is bound to be an accident some time,

So what your saying is example= An airline with a vast fleet is bound to have more plane crashes than others ??

Do you know if the drivers are on a timed mission ?? Do you know that most by far exceed the speed limit ?? Sometimes we should look at the type of incident ( NOT ACCIDENT) and the causes of them, would some of the causes be speed--nodding off--schedules--.................so as you rightly say there are bound to be accidents sometime or other :whistling:

Comparing a bus company with an airline just doesn't equate.

With plane crashes there are usually only three causes, mechanical failure, pilot error, or perhaps a weather condition, planes do not have to contend with flying in close proximity to other planes, so that the problem of collision with another plane is so small I should imagine difficult to quantify. and the other instances including impacting other things such as mountains etc are covered by the three causes stated. Whilst I am sure you attempted to make a genuine comparison, I think it is reasonable to say with regard to driving conditions and standards in Thailand, no matter how good a driver you are or consider yourself to be, the more you drive in these conditions you more likely you are to be involved in some kind of incident whether it be a near miss or an actual accident due to the conditions which in Thailand we have to drive in. I once had to lay my motorcycle down, suffering extensive grazing to my legs, just because a Thai Lady decided to step off the pavement to cross the road without even looking. Doesn't matter how good you consider yourself, or the number of trips you make, its impossible to make provision for the antics of the 'other driver' or in my case pedestrian

  14. I replied today to a post, there have been literally hundreds of replies to this topic and since I posted my reply I have been recieving notifications by Email and now have so far deleted over 200, I've been back into my settings and changed my notifications to 'No notifications' but they still keep coming, I've been back in again to my settings and unchecked that I am notified by Email, but they still keep coming, I posted a plea for help on the original topic itself but it appears to have been deleted, possibly because it was 'off topic', but never the less whoever deleted it should have realised I needed help. Why has changing my settings not stopped these notifications, or am I destined to keep getting these notifications until the posts eventually peter out, or can someone tell me how I can stop them

  15. Please forgive the lack of computer knowledge from someone of the 'older' generation who really only uses his computer for Email, writing letters and saving pictures from his camera.

I understand now that all my Emails are on a server somewhere else in the world, does this mean that my Yahoo Address book was compromised at Yahoo itself and there would have been nothing I could do about it.

I understand that if I download any attachment that my Norton will scan it for virus content.

As I often see warnings not to open any emails from sources you don't know, is it possible to have your computer infected by just opening an email.

I have just received an Email from someone I have not heard from for years with just RE: in the subject line, I am reluctant to even open it, if there is a possibility it could contain a virus, even though it is from someone in my address book.

These are probably basic knowledge to someone computer literate, but for me now I'm worried about opening any Emails whether from those I know or not if in the subject line, the subject is vague

  16. Are you using Yahoo online? Do you have Norton installed on your computer?

Assuming 'Yes' to both questions, how do you expect Norton, installed on your computer, to check emails that you receive on an online email service?

The Norton statement refers to anything that you do on your computer. It can't check things that are not on your computer.

If you view a suspect website, it will warn you. If you download a suspect file, it will warn you. If an email is sitting on a server on the other side of the world (ie Yahoo servers), it can't do anything about it.

Thank you for that explaination, to someone who is not very computer literate it was much easier to understand.

But why does Norton then say that there is Email protection

    Also

As I recieved in my spam folder, the email that appears to have had the virus and deleted it without opening it how is it that despite not visiting any dubious web sites and only sending and receiving emails from personal friends, that access was gained to my address book, and emails sent to every one on it, yet no record is in my sent folder

Neither Yahoo or Norton were able to offer any explaination for this

  17. Last night I discovered my Yahoo address book had been compromised, and that everyone on it had received an email that purported to come from me and included a web link which upon opening was a virus. I only discovered this when one of those who received the email contacted me to say that he (fortunately) couldn't open the link.

I checked in my 'Sent' folder and there was no record of this email being sent.

The subject of this viral Emal was RE:Http://, I recall seeing such an email in my 'spam' folder, but as always, I deleted it along with all the other spam without opening it.

I contacted Yahoo and they suggested several ways to protect my mail account and address book, but because there was no obvious way that my address book had been compromised (as I hadn't opened the spam mail), they suggested I contact Norton who provide my pc security. The first service agent shocked me by saying that Email from Yahoo & Hotmail are not protected by Norton. I pointed out to them that in the status box of Norton it clearly says "You are protected for web browsing and Email", despite me pointing out that this was a 'global' statement and that all of my friends who use Norton were under the impression that they had paid for something that offered complete protection, and indicated so, and that they also considered Nortons statement misleading at the very least, they confirmed again that Norton does not offer any protection for Emails from Yahoo and Hotmail, although it will scan for anything you attempt to download from them such as attachments, but the emails and content are not protected or scanned for virus's.

Am I and my friends the only ones that assumed from Nortons statement "you are protected forweb browsing and Emails" to mean just that and not only partial protection from certaim microsoft email programmes.

  18. I never thought about tourists getting on if I stopped for any reason, but if a couple of gorgeous girls got on - would you tell them!!!

No, i wouldn't say a word to them....but i think the Baht Bus and taxi drivers around might want a "little word with you" about it, if you get my drift

I appreciate all the help and comments, if and when I do get one, and get it successfully registered and on the road, I'll post all the in's and outs of doing so, and hopefully assist anyone else considering the same.

That "anyone else" is me for starters !!!!!:D I fall off bikes too easily (not enough wheels, lol!!!) and a car is just too cumbersome around the towns these days, so a tuktuk would be ideal for me when i get myself over there permenently this year (i hope!!!)

Am in similar position myself, am here long term, but can't 'settle' , rent better place, etc. etc. until home in UK sold. Seems to be a lot of interest in this, maybe form a farang Tuk Tuk club, Maybe even Tuk Tuk races!!!, but seriously as soon as I can go through with someting like this I will post all the information, and if anyone gets there before me I'm sure there are many out there would appreciate hearing from you with all the information, Thanks to all ,

  19. If you are in Pattaya then it's worth taking a trip to Sriracha to check out some 2nd hand re-conditioned ones. There are loads of them there and some good prices. Mate of mine bought one from there 2-3 years ago. Can't remember the exact garage but if you head down to 'Robinsons' and speak to the Tuk Tuk drivers waiting outside they will point you in the right direction. If your Thai isn't too good then take a Thai friend with you.

Thank you for this information, as you say it is near to Pattaya, and would be a day out too

  20. Well, that place i mentioned (Expertise) is actually in Chonburi, so not too far.

Good luck, and keep us informed

But, personally i think its going to be a pain in the arse to get the proper licence plates needed, and i suspect driving (riding?) it would be even more of a hassle. What with the BIB doing what the bib do best ;) and tourists climbing onboard thinking its a taxi, every time you stop at a traffic light or jam. Just dont commit any money to the project until you are 100% sure you can get it legal, would be what i would do

    Again, good luck

I should imagine there might be a problem if wanting to use it in Bangkok itself, however I'm kocated in Pattaysa, and have seen two here both being driven and I assume owened by Faraang, I will perhaps consult these people before an ultimate purchase, but thought the location of a supplier , considering there are 7,000 of these flying around Bangkok would be easy to have found
