  1. I talked to them about 6 weeks ago and they wanted to know if I was going to Krungsri or not . They said that in the first week of April the term deposit would end and I could decide where to put the money. I thought they meant that they would prorate the term deposit . Since then I found a place with a much higher interest rate, 100% insured up to 250,000 AUD, and only 10% tax withholding. I've decided to not go to the Krungsri group and sent them an email to this effect.

What I really want to know is (I don't necessarily think they'll give me a straight answer - their incentive is to get customers to hang with Krungsri):

    1. Are they treating me worse than others because I'm not going to Krungsri ? And if so is this legal?

    2. If I don't voluntarily end the term deposit nor transfer it to Krungsri, what will happen and when will it happen ? If they end the term deposit will they have to pay me the full term interest rate?

    Thanks.

  2. I have a term deposit at HSBC with 1 yr maturity of Jan 2013 at 4.25%(AUD) .

I've decided not to go to the Krungsri Group but to move my account to a different country but at HSBC .

They're closing up shop on retail business on June 29 of this year.

Shouldn't they pay me a pro rated amount on the term deposit ?

Does anyone know what the policy is on this(if there is one) ?

Are they treating customers who decide to go to Krungsri Group differently than

    others ?

  3. I have been looking for a combination air-hockey/pool/table tennis game table in Bangkok, finally found one, but the one's available in the US appear to be better. Most of the combo game tables available on amazon are not eligible for intl shipping. A company, AMID, provides LCL(less-than-container load) consolidation and amazon provides free shipping for these large, expensive game tables (appx 150kg, 7ft x 3ft x 1 ft box at a cost of around $700). The freight is only about $300 to BKK port and assuming that Amazon will ship to the OCF (Ocean Carrier Facility) with a Booking Reference Number on the delivery address, then I can think this will work. The integrated tariff database lists the ad valorum duty for

billiard tables/game tables on a per weight basis at 10 baht per kg so the actual duty will only be appx 1500 baht for a 150kg game table. Of course there will be other charges/processing fees and perhaps 7% VAT tacked on , so I expect to have to pay around 10,000 baht to get the table

    free and clear.

It comes in one large box(and won't be palletized) and since I haven't done this sort of thing wondered if a 7ft x 3ft x 1ft un-palletized box in

a container is likely to make the trip undamaged.

Can anyone offer me some comments suggestions on this plan of action. Anyone with experience doing this sort of thing?

I found the Ocean Freight Consolidator through the thaivisa website.

    Thanks.

  4. I suspect there has not been anyone there over the holiday weekend and probably makeshift facilities and very busy today.

Got a 90 day report due tomorrow - going to Chang Wattana from Rama 9 Rd - should I take the highway north from the MRT HQ area, go over Ram Intra to Lak-Si and Chang Wattana (from the East) or

should I take the highway from Rama 9 to the west and then turn north to Chang Wattana, heading East to the government complex?

In short, coming from downtown Bangkok should I approach the Government Complex and Immigration office from the East or from the West to avoid the traffic/road blockage/flooding ?

    Thanks

  5. You are married - you must translate the marriage certificate into Thai and present that with original to Embassy for there chop and then have it registered with MFA and then recorded at a District Office. You are not trying to get married as your translator seems to think - you are married and it is legal in Thailand.

So, I went to the US embassy and filled out and swore an affidavit that I was legally married to my Thai wife in the US on such and such a date etc., then had it translated to Thai, and took it to the MoFA to get it legalized. Now when I take this down to the Amphur/District office to record it, does my wife have to go with me? Or can I just take a copy of her ID and housing registration papers?

  6. purely a formality, get the marriage certificate translated to Thai, registered with Minsistry of Foriegn Affairs then go to local Amphur for registration and job done.

Apparently I misunderstood the process on a fundamantal level. I went to the translator to get my US marriage certificate translated and she said that I need to get the embassy affidavit and then translate that. Pretty sure no original US marriage certificate is required.

But I have obtained the marriage affidavit in pdf form from the US embassy bangkok website (see attached) -- note that you must swear that you are not already married and do not have any children to support already. This is quite interesting, since I am married with children.

Only thing that makes sense to me is that Thailand does not recognize marriages from outside this country and swearing only applies to Thai marriage and children thereof. I thought that I was just going to have my US legal marriage recognized here, but no, I was wrong. I'm getting married here legally. But the affidavit provided by the embassy is self contradicting.

Maybe I should just go to the Amphur and do it all in the Thai language, if possible.

This is going to be a hassle.

    Thanks for your help though.

  7. Thanks in advance for all knowledgeable advice:

I've been here for 5 years, living in Bangkok, on a Non-Imm O visa, no work permit and am buying a new vehicle and want to

register it under my name. I need to renew my Non-Imm O based onTthai marriage, which this time requires that I register my

marriage in Thailand. I'm also need to renew my five year Thai drivers license soon.

For these things I need to prove/certify address.

These seem to be the only options:

    a. Go to Immigration Department for a certification of resident address (about 100 baht)

    b. Go to US embassy and get a certification of residency letter by swearing under oath (about 1500 baht)

    c. Using Work Permit as proof of address (doesn't apply to me)

    d. Using Permanent Residency Status as proof of address (doesn't apply to me)

Only a and b apply to me. Since item b is expensive I would prefer to go with choice a.

(In the immigration forum they indicate that resident address for registration of marriage can be proved through letter from

the immigration department certifying address based on 90 day report)

I assume that I can use this address certification from immigration for marriage registration, driver's license renewal, and vehicle registration. Is this correct?

Have I got all this right or am I missing something?

    Thanks

  8. I was hoping to find a 6 to 8 foot combination game table including two or more of

Air-hockey,pool,table-tennis, foosball (See attached photo for the kind of thing I'm looking for).

Can anyone give me some idea of where I might find something like this or who to talk to

about finding these kind of things in Thailand?

    Thanks.

  9. Believe one step missed in above as Embassy must be involved after translation and before MFA visit from my understanding. But not a big deal. Once recorded at District Office you can obtain the ledger copy that everyone now seems to be required to present, in addition to normal marriage certificate, for extensions of stay.

What's the (US embassy in my case) supposed to do? I brought Marriage Certificate that was already authenticated by the US dept of state .

Also, which Ampur to register in ? - Where we live now(in an apt) or where my wife is registered as a member of a household ( her family home )?

    Thanks

  10. I was married in the USA almost 20 years ago to a Thai woman.

We moved to Thailand 6 years ago and the last time I renewed my visa based on marriage(reside in Bangkok)

the immigration officer said we had to register the marriage here. My renewal is coming up in a few months.

What do I have to do to register our marriage in Thailand/Bangkok and is it a formality or a

    pain-in-the-glutomos-maximus?

    Thanks.

  11. About 9 months ago, I had one rear end collision (low speed - my fault) with minor damage to the pickup in front of me and alot of damage to my front end (had to repair / replace grill and bumper on my 3 year old Alphard Hybrid(bought used ). More recently I badly scraped the bottom side of the same car on a curb, when misjudging a turn .

My original company (actually the car is in my Thai wife's name) wouldn't reinsure, and recently Safety Insurance, which has some good things said in these forums, after coming to see the car, refused to give a quote .

Am I out of luck here?

Will I be unable to get insurance due to a bad record if I buy another car ?

Are driving records kept by individual companies or in a central database accessible to all insurance companies?

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  12. For wrap up...

I again checked the major department stores - Emporium,Paragon,Central - and they now all have the Ultimate Buzz Lightyear robot. Its

    14995 baht.

Had a friend who was travelling to HK pick one up for me (got it at the Duty Free Shop) for 1800HKD which is about 7000 baht.

In the US its going for $125 (about 3800 baht).

    Its a great toy.

  13. Try Major Ekkamai, on the Second floor there is a toy store that carries some of these collectables. You might get lucky.

"Finished", said the lady, after looking at the picture of Buzz Lightyear with his remote. My Thai, be only passable, led me to the conclusion that they had one (or more of them) but theyz all gone now.

Thanks for the tip, I wooda nevr found that place without your input.

  14. Might want to give Toys R US a ttry, a friend of mine was looking to Specifc Bonicle figure that was not availbe at department stores, but they did have them at Toys R Us; there's one at Esplanade on Ratchada.

Checked that ToysRUs out today. Its a small one. Central World's was the best, c'est la vie. Will check Rama IV/Carrefour out next week, but pretty sure they won't have them. (ToysRUs US website doesn't have these toys listed, though they do have a lot of Toy Story paraphanalia).

    thanks

  15. I've Been looking for the Ultimate Buzz Lightyear Robot - comes with a IR remote and it dances, takes voice commands, walks... etc.

It costs about $150 in the US.

I've checked Paragon, Central Chitlom, and the emporioum, without any luck.

There's a less sophisticated model called "Buzz Lightyear U-Command" by Thinkway which also makes the "Wall-E U-Command" robotic toy.

Anybody give me a hint as where I might find these in BKK, or the rest of SEA for that matter ?

    Thanks

  16. The topic title/description say it all.

Thinking about buying the "Children's Music Journey" software, CD 1 (there's three available - want to see how the first one goes before getting the other two) and wondered if anyone knows where I might pick this up in Bangkok, as well as a MIDI piano keyboard(hooks up to your computer using a USB cable) . This is piano lessons via computer but particularly well suited for kids.

I checked but didn't find any torrents for this particular software on the main P-P sites.

    Thanks.

  17. I use a WiFi capable PMP(Personal media player) the Archos 605(There is a later version of the Archos - the Intermet Media Tablets 5 and 7). I can view internet on my TV (42" Samsung) through my WiFi up to Flash v 9. There is not an ARM (for mobile devices such as my Archos PMP) flash version available for flash v 10 as of yet (so don't think youtube is gonna work most of the time).

The Archos 605 WiFi connects to your router and uses the opera browser, then outputs it using a non-HIDef signal (composite video). I bought the Archos 605, 160GB in the USA about a year ago for $250 though I spent another $100 on software and hardware upgrades.

You'll have to check at www.archos.com if the later generation devices support HiDef and if they support higher flash versions(most of the new Youtube stuff is version 10 , though I'm not sure what your after).

    Hope this helps.

  18. I really enjoyed riding through Krabi earlier this week on the way back from Malaysia. I guess it's the 4.

I'm thinking about driving down Highway 4 from bangkok to Khuraburi, parking for a few days, and taking a high boat to the Surin Islands for two nights and 3 days of snorkelling. Can you tell me the road conditions on the stretch from North of Phuket to near Bangkok? We're you worried about hijacking/robbery at all(heard some rumors)?

    Thanks.

    :)
