  1. I am over 50 with the required bank balance, and the answer is yes I would come to live here. For over 50's I can understand that Thailand can not afford to provide health care or emergency care, so it is only reasonable that you can prove you can pay for this yourself. Life is getting more difficult in most countries, and the difficulties, including immigration, here are still worth putting up with for the friendliness, and standard of living you can have here.

  2. Last year I received a multiple entry long term stay O-A visa in UK dated 6th November 2014. I had not realised that I needed to do anything with this when I arrived in Thailand, and had thought that this was synonymous with a retirement visa. I went back to UK in April, and came back on 30th October ready to extend my visa. On entry I was given permission to stay until 28th October 2016. Yesterday I went to extend my visa, but Immigration told me that they could not do this until 45 days before my permission to stay expires. I have already booked a trip to Myanmar at Christmas, and also to go back to UK at the end of February, and I am now worried that when I re-enter Thailand, I will have problems as I will have the permission to stay but the visa will have expired. What I really want to do is to obtain a retirement visa, so that this can be extended on an annual basis. Could you advise me what I should do please?

  3. Can anyone tell me what are the traffic free hours for Silom Road walking street? I was there today between 2 and 3. The road was blocked off but cars and motorbikes were going in both directions on both sides of the road. Lots of guys in uniforms standing around talking, but no one was stopping cars and motorbikes coming out of sois.

  4. Surely this is a problem of the meter rates being too low. In what other major city would you pay as little as you do in BKK? Have you noticed that the meter hardly changes for waiting time? So why would the taxi driver want to take you if he is going to end up sitting in traffic for an hour? I always ask, and if he says "No" I ask him for what I consider a reasonable price, and he then rarely says no. The thing to do is to argue for a fair price for taxis, and this would not be a problem.

  5. Not having a clue what this film was I Googled it. What were you saying about not wanting fantasy?

Life of Pi is a fantasy adventure novel by Yann Martel published in 2001.

Life of Pi is an allegory rather than a fantasy. Apologies to the Wikepedia author who obviously did not know the difference

  6. We are having the same problem. Have heard that 3BB are upgrading, and that routers need to be reset by them, to take the new system. Heard nothing official from 3BB, - only on the grapevine. Evidently speeds should be higher when this has been done, but not yet sure how to get the router reset.

  7. Something strange is going on at the moment with the cinema. LIfe of Pi has been postponed twice. It was not showing yesterday, when the films normally change, but is being shown today at 19.15 and 21.50. Most people will check films for the week on Thursday, so will not even be aware that is is showing, and I wonder if it is a way to say that no one wants to see this type of film. So if you can, please go to one of this evening's performances to show that we do want more non gore or fantasy films in Samui. Many thanks

  9. Can anyone help me? I have agreed to work for a Thai employer for 35,000 baht per month. The work permit has been issued, but I have to exit the country to get a B visa, as I am currently on an O.

The lady dealing with this advised me that the best thing to do is to get a 3 month single entry B visa, and then to extend this in Thailand, so that I would not have to do the visa run afterwards.

However I am told that Koh Samui immigration require proof that the salary is at least 60,000 baht per month before they will issue an extension.

Can anyone tell me which figure is correct?
