It is not leasing, as you have to pay the complete regular market price of the property up front. You may call it Fixed-term tenancy or tenancy for years, though even then the payment normally is on a monthly basis. Actually is is buying, and returning the property for free after these 99 years. And as such it was defined in the respective Mexican law at that time.

That is still leasing.  You don't actually own it.  No different to many flats in the UK.

I don't see how foreigners buying land will stimulate the economy. It might help in the real estate glut and slow sales market, but the overall economy? No.

Not saying I agree with the concept, but a healthy real estate market would obviously help the economy.  It's the biggest transaction of money most people have.

  3. Banning alcohol outright is dangerous in itself.  Alcoholics become dependant on alcohol (obviously) nut so does the body, you can't just cold turkey on alcohol like you could on say heroin.  The body needs to slowly get itself off it.

From the few times I've been to Thailand thee did seem to be quite a few people who looked like they'd fit into the alcoholic category.............

Sad that she must have lost at least 2 days income. British government should take responsibility to replace her fake money. I know many of these travel agents gets only 100-150 baht per ticket sold.

These kind of petty scammers should be punished at the Airport while returning.

    What a load of nonsense.

Would you take responsibility if I said I was you and stole something?

  5. If its in the Privacy of there own House, i can't see any problem..

come on, we are all adults..

36 vials of ketamine and 2 9mm semi-automatics on a resort in the vicinity of other tourists, and you can't see a problem?

Take the guns out of it and does it really make any difference? Drugs just harm yourself in most cases, yet the sentences are longer than violent crimes in lots of cases. It's all a bit backwards. (This isn't a dig at Thailand, it's the same in most countries).

  6. We took my 13 year old nephew to Thailand a few years ago, there was about 20 of us and we'd always ask for a beer for him (initially) and they'd look awkward before saying"be careful of the Police" and then taking the order. laugh.png (We have a laugh......tut tut)

We'd obviously then correct them and get him a juice or whatever he wanted but it did seem to be one a law the locals semi respected. I guess it's tough when money is tight and the thought of 20 odd people are asking for a drink and they think they could potentially lose that. Looking back our innocent bit of fun was a bit knob endish, albeit without any nasty intent.

  7. Whoosh........ I'll try again.

Glegolo was trying to bash Americans by implying they did not know where Bangkok was and wrote, "American I presume??" in response to a poster from the UK who had written,

"I even had to google Bangkok to be 100% where it was."

Get it? He was trying to mock Americans who he proposed did not know where Bangkok was when in fact the person who didn't know was not from America but the UK.

It has nothing to do with land. Glegolo was trying to imply that Americans, the education system and population as a whole are stupid.

Land had nothing to do with it at all. Americans are Americans regardless of the land they stand on. 110 million Americans have passports that is more than the combined populations of the UK and Australia and Italy together.

I was just asking him to admit he was in error about assuming the person who he was mocking was an American and admit he was from the UK.

It was only a bit tongue in cheek. I'm sure he didn't mean too much from it.

I do find it strange that more Americans don't like foreign travel though considering their relative wealth compared to a lot of the rest of the world. Around 75% of Brits have passports and only about 45% of Americans. I'm not looking into one is better than the other just curious as to why that might be.

  8. Out of interest if you and your wife were to split up would you be interested in the locals Thai women? If people find Thai women attractive surely those living there it would be the logical/likely thing?

Thailand has a lot more to offer than just women but obviously they are going to be a huge appeal for a lot of men, but to suggest that it's the only thing that people come for seems a little wrong to me.

I'm a holidaymaker when it comes to Thailand and don't live there like lots of people, but I've had some great holidays there and not taken any of the women back to my hotel, but it was still fun/nice the attention you can get from them.

  9. I have seen it before when tourists think they have a personal taxi and not realise the bus has a set route and is a 'share bus.'

Is there any reason to believe the tourist didn't know how they worked? I've been on them plenty of times and they've taken me off their usual route.

The one time I asked to take us to the Hilton, we motored past it and I assumed he was going in some other entrance, about 3 miles up the road I wonder where he's going but don't really have a chance to get out and ask, we ended up at a place called Healthland which was miles away. smile.png

I paid him extra as it was quite nice seeing some parts I'd not seen before.

  10. I get so tired of people putting a crime back on the victim.

He shouldnt have been sat at the park.

She shouldnt have been out late.

The parents should have been more watchful of their child.

She was wearing a short skirt.

He should not have been drunk.

    He should not be angry.

The blame must be squarely on the shoulders of those who commit the crime.

We have the right to be out in public.

We have the right to let our children out to play.

We have The right to complain.

We have the right to express anger in a non violent way. Raising a voice is non violent.

In a court of law the one who hit first is guilty.

Stop giving violent criminals a right of way.

You've been reading ClutchClarks posts as well then. smile.png

  11. I've spent two Christmas and New Years in Samui. I've found that there seems to be more going on on Christmas Eve rather than Christmas day, that's not to say there isn't plenty going on on Christmas day as well.

The one New Years eve we went to the Full Moon party or countdown as it was called, I'd avoid that personally. It was heaving, took ages to get there and a nightmare to get home, again similar story for the Ark bar, it was good in there, but absolutely manic, can't be too critical of them as they had plenty of staff floating around but was difficult for them to keep up, to make it worse the heavens opened so everyone forced themselves inside, although if you are around that area and you find it a pain in the Ark bar you can easily go and move back onto the main street and find loads of parties there.

I've never been there for New Years eve, but in Lamai I suppose the obvious one would be the Swing bar. The Canadian bloke who owns the place always comes across as a good bloke and I'd imagine they'd have a decent party.

  12. Are you one of the above that i mentioned ? hurt your feelings ?

Well Thailand does tend to attract (1) Millions of very questionable foreigners that would not last a day elsewhere . (2) Millions of morons that left their brains at the airport or never had. (3) Far too many criminals. That is reality here. GET OVER IT ! It is called evolution. Not smart enough your dead and won,t bred morons like this guy. DON,T DO DRUGS IN THAILAND EASY ! Just a warning to Full Moon Party morons.

This thread needs more people asking if anyone else has thought about Beavis & Butthead or is it just me?

This thread needs more suffering wished unto scumbags.

This thread, like most others on TVF, needs more foreigners who are better than other foreigners.

At least squeegees last point can now be crossed off the list.

Yes, I live in Koh Cardiff. biggrin.png

  14. For me personally this isn't a UK police v Thailand police thing, more a case of humanity. Whoever killed the two of them need to be locked up for other peoples safety.

The UK police may be able to investigate areas that the local police feel uncomfortable doing, I agree that that isn't the way it should be, but that seems to be the case. On the other hand the UK police have made loads of mistakes over the years, they don't have any sort of magic wand and will find it very tough to solve the case, especially after most of the important clues will have been long ruined.

  15. This has now made the New York Times:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/15/world/asia/hearings-open-into-killings-of-two-british-tourists-on-thai-island.html?_r=0

"The suspects chose a team of 20 lawyers on Monday." Wow, 20!

"We hit them with the handle of a hoe two or three times." If this is accurate, how come the metal part of the hoe was covered in blood? And for sure the handle would not have made those wounds on David.

I'm beginning to think this is not going to go away so easily and could haunt Thailand for a long time.

It would also probably be the best thing for Thailand long term. Dunkin donuts like ThailandJohn are obviously happy with the Status quo that is currently going on in Thailand, but the likelihood is that it leaves murder(ers) still out in the open and a lot worse place, great until it happens to someone he cares about.

Most people with a brain understand that there are bad people from every corner of the world, Thailands unwillingness to admit they have their own will leave a lot worse lasting damage for the country.

This case blowing up in their face will force the powers that be to address the situation, until then it'll just carry on as normal.

  16. The brits are here. The burms are here. The truth has many eyes now.

There are many police who want this cleared too.

Stop complaining and give them all a chance. There comes a time when one must accept.

'The Brits are here' is supposed to instill confidence? Where were the Brits when Hong Kong was being handed over to China. By treaty, HK (the region southward from Boundary Road) should have stayed within the Commonwealth but the 'Pewter Lady' Marge Thatcher didn't hang tough.

RE; Ko Tao: if it comes down to hanging tough to see that justice is done verses allowing Thai officialdom to frame the Burmese men, Brit authorities will choose the latter. Diplomacy and 'not embarrassing one's host is more important than sticking up for justice.'

One end result: the true murderers/rapists will continue to hang out and party with our sisters and daughters.

She'd have hang really tough, she left office in 1990 and Hong Kong wasn't handed over until 97. smile.png

  17. i truly still believe that the UK aint got no real power to MAKE the Thai govt do as they please.

I don't believe another country has the power to make another country do according to its demands... (with the exception of the US maybe)

This case has been dragged for wayyyy too long. Dogged with multiple loopholes as well...

I think this will just lead to a not so happy ending, so that our hosts, Thailand, will be able to save face, as usual

    Possible scenarios:

    1) the 2 burmese men suddenly "commit suicide" in their cells from the immense "guilt" and stress.

    2) the UK police actually sends a team to KT island, and they too are brutally and silently murdered by the Mafia in charge of the island.

    3) the RTP suddenly comes up with some magical witnesses and evidence to link to other Burmese killers, saying that the initial 2 burmese guys were threatened by them to the scapegoats.

Of course foreign countries have influence over others. The poorer that country the more influence another country has over them.

Thailand relies hugely on Tourism, as simple change of the FCO website of advising people against all but essential travel will influence hundreds of thousands of UK tourists instantly. This would be sneaky and underhand, but easily justified if they wanted to do it.

You've seen the lengths Thailand goes too, to protect it's image, things like that would obviously give a country some influence over them.

It's not really about British politics/police in a power struggle against the Thai authorities it's about catching the correct people and making sure the guilty parties pay for their crimes. Additionally making sure that two other lives aren't ruined just to protect the tourist income.

  18. Maybe the laws have changed a little since you practiced AOA.

If married the law states 50/50 irrespective of who paid for what, and who has the mortgage.

However circumstances are now taken into account and that can change any awards.

If children are involved the Court see's that as the residence of the child and you cannot force either party to sell before the child is 18.

The OP also has just as many rights as the woman to take sole custody of the child and stay put in his home.

Whoever takes responsibility and custody for the child in a divorce will inevitably be able to remain in the matrimonial home until the child is at least 18, unless they sell it by mutual consent.

Nope, I keep up with the UK and my home state.

If anything UK has got worse for men in the last 3 years.

Women are considered always truthful, in family court, if the kid is under 14, woman will usually be awarded home outright.

UK law has never divided 50/50, not in the last 15 years anyway, if there is a child involved.

I could get the wife, the house and 100% custody in an instant.

And block dad from ever seeing the kid again.

She just has to play it right.

First a trip down the police stn, report she is worried about his mental state, and risk of violence towards her and the kid (touching the girl in an inappropriate way?).

Second trip to his local Citizens advice, ask for help (which will block him using it).

Third trip to his local doctor, ask for mental trauma help, mention him touching the daughter (which will block him).

Fourth, trip to kids school, see headmaster, worried about his mental health (touching the kid).

Etc., it's a really easy process.

It takes a pretty scummy person to accuse someone they once cared about of being a paedophile. I appreciate they are out there but that has to be one of the lowest things I've ever heard of just to get a better divorce settlement.

I'm male so I doubt it would be of any benefit for me to do the same, but I really couldn't live with myself if I did that to someone.
