  1. I flew last weekend from Bangkok to Chiangmai. At check-in at DMK was asked for my vaccine certificate, and there was a QR code to fill in details for Chiangmai like my hotel, etc. On arrival at CNX, only checked that I had completed the form. This is going from red zone to green zone.

On the return, no checks or QR code, form filling necessary.

    Not much inconvenience at all.

Well, that wasn't expected at all....

Given that chances are high I will arrive in Thailand this weekend, what was the last lock down like? I remember there was a curfew, no nightlife, and random foreigners were busted throwing private parties - but were there more restrictions or could you at least go get food and supplies during the day?

We'll be in quarantine until mid-January anyway, but wondering what happens after...

    ....and no alcohol

  3. Just spent the long weekend in CM, and it was sad to see so many shops closed with many For Rent or For Sale signs. I walked around the old city, Tapae gate, Loi Kroh, Nimman all very quiet, never mind the coffee shops and restaurants if they are still open, you may be their only customer.

  4. My 2 flights on Qantas were cancelled (due to travel in April), and accepted the credit voucher option reluctantly. They sent the vouchers pretty quickly but the conditions are unacceptable - I was flying from Jakarta where I was supposed to be on a business trip to Sydney. Voucher says can only redeem from that original country which is ridiculous as I live in Thailand. For the other voucher from Sydney to Bangkok, it also says I can only use from Australia. Total 51000 Baht i will most probably lose. People warned me about QF long ago.

  5. Airlines and hotels will have to slash prices to get going again and at least survive, so lots of bargains to be had once some countries re-open. However, it will take at least 2 years for tourism to get back to normal levels, and only if a vaccine has been found by then. In the meantime some airlines and many hotels will go bankrupt, so some tourist towns/islands and will resemble ghost towns with more entertainment venues, bars and restaurants closed forever.

For the independent traveler looking for peace and quiet, this will be the optimum time - enjoy while it last.

  6. To add to why not so many infections in Thailand and Cambodia, as you travel around both countries you will have noticed that most Chinese tourists come in groups, they stay together in hotels, buses, boats, shops etc and do not really mix with the locals at all, so I assume if there was much transmission it was amongst themselves + the tour guide, the bus driver and the hotel/restaurant staff but not the general population unlike tourists from other countries.

Arrived in Bali on March 17th and entered with no problems. Bali has had 4 cases of COVID-19 with one death (an elderly foreigner). There are few foreigners here but life is presently quite normal and good here except gatherings and events for a big holiday next week have been cancelled. Suppose to leave on April 15th after my 30 days is up but if unable to return to Thailand, I'll head to Indo immigration for an extension. Figure I have enuf cash to stay 100 days. I'm not gonna worry about anything until then. The weather is great, food fantastic, people super, and the US dollar is really strong...feel alot better and safer here than I did back in Thailand with the virus situation there.

Exactly why I wanted to Bali.

I agree that in the last 2 weeks with the evolving situation it would be really stupid to plan a holiday anywhere, however I booked my trip to Bali early January when there was no way of knowing what we know today, so this is not an April's fool post. I have now carefully reconsidered and could only come to one conclusion: cancel my trip.

  8. I got Securitas to install a wonderful video entry phone, burglar alarm and CCTV in my villa. It came with a 1 year maintenance contract and all works well and I think deters anyone from wanting to rob me. My CCTV system live pictures, I can see on my iPhone.

**phone number removed as per forum rules** (offices in Pattaya and all over Thailand from what I can gather).
