  1. My wife has been in the UK for the past 6 months on a family settlement visa. Unfortunately, things are not working out and it's looking increasingly likely we will separate. If we do, would she lose her right to remain in the UK? She has met another fella, but my understanding is that he couldn't sponsor another visa application for her. We have a young son, but I won't sign over custody so I doubt she'll be able to apply for a visa as the parent of a dependent child.

To be honest I'm not sure whether I want her to remain in the UK. At the same time, I don't want my son to grow up without a mother. What a miserable time...

  2. I will shortly be applying for a UK settlement visa for my wife. I have most of the paperwork prepared, but there's one potential problem. After getting married I changed my surname by deed pool and obtained a new passport. However, my wife still uses my previous surname, and all our marriage documents refer to my old name.

Will the UKBA simply require a certified copy of the deed pool, copies of my old and new passports, and an explanation in my sponsor's letter?

I'd appreciate any advice or info because I've tried contacting the UKBA without success.

  3. ^ Thanks for the reply howerde.

Does anyone know if there's a way around this? For example, would a provisional rental agreement with evidence of a deposit having been paid be adequate?

I should have cash savings of in excess of £50K when I apply for the visa. However, I don't want to pay £3-4000 to rent a property before the visa has actually been issued.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate them.

  4. My Thai wife and I are considering moving to the UK next year. Although we are unlikely to have £62,500 in savings we should be able to meet the financial requirements based on a job offer in the UK and having earned over £18,600 for the past 6 months.

However, I'm concerned about meeting the accommodation requirements. We don't currently have a property in the UK, and my intention had been to obtain the visa, travel to the UK, and then look for somewhere to rent for 6-12 months. Is this possible, or do I need to organize accommodation before we apply for her visa?

  5. Fun Planet was closed... a bit of work to be done there and possibly a month away from opening, as is the ice rink.

I think the IMAX cinema was open, at least it was not advertised as closed... but then with thais...you never know.

remember the thai sign: Closed! same same as Open, but different

I was planning on taking my 5-year old son to Fun Planet tomorrow, so thanks for saving me a wasted journey.

  6. i have about 50 or so posters i brought from USA.... they are posters of shows that i worked when i used to do security for bill graham presents.

So.. no individual posters of single artists, except for the rare "evening with" shows, which meant ONLY one artist. Stopped doing shows about 2002, so

    all posters are pre-2002.

Send me a message if you want to come over and browse thru them... framing is cheap in CM and i have many on my walls. I would be willing to part with some of them.

Thank you zippydedodah, that's really generous of you!

Who were some of your favorite musicians that you got to see perform?

David Bowie, Steve Miller, Metallica, Grateful Dead, King Crimson, Led Zepplin, Nirvana, Blue Cheer, Jefferson Airplane, Jerry Lee Lewis

...i did not work all those shows, some i just attended as i lived in SFO/Marin area during the good old days... but 12 yrs of security (1990 to 2002), averaging 100+ shows a year, i saw a few people play, for sure.

BTW... the posters i would be willing to part with are not framed, but stored in my home.

Awesome! you don't get to see bands like that anymore, I'll bet you met plenty of interesting characters over the years.

    I sent you PM

    Thanks again.

    Ditto that....

The bands / musicians list is an absolute cracker. Fair play to Zippydedodah!!!

  7. I have tried most of the Indian restaurants in CM. The only one I've found which is worth going back to is Hinlay, which offers a consistent high standard of food at reasonable prices.

I completely agree. I've tried pretty much every Indian restaurant in CM, and the only one I return to regularly is Hinlay.

It's not classically Indian (many of their curries originate from elsewhere), but the food is delicious and the Chicken Phaal is an absolute winner.

  8. ........ Hopefully tomorrow morning it will have dropped considerably.

    Gonzo - Any update?

I live just up the road from you at Rimping condo, but I'm currently overseas. If it looks like flooding, I'd like to make sure my wife has got some supplies in.

    Hi Jowels

The river level has dropped about 9cm from yesterday evening.....and has been holding at the same level for about 5 hrs now. Upstream has shown some drop in levels there and should reflect on us in the next hour or two......

Re your wife getting supplies....... don't worry..... just you keep sending money and she can get all the food she wants from The Pun Pun.....

Speaking of that on a more serious note..... I do have a customer who lives in the Rimping who regularily stocks up on frozen foods from us that the just pops in his micro wave when he feels the urge..... there is always more ways to skin a fish

We will keep a watch on the river....

PS If Ms Jowels should pop by tell her to use your screen name and get a 10% discount.......

[just couldn't possibly miss the chance to sneak that in as a late thought]

Thanks for the update and the offer of a 10% discount.

I'll be back in Chiang Mai later this week, and I'll probably pop by at the weekend. Hopefully, I won't need a canoe to get there.

  10. Yes to both.

You have done a fantastic amount of leg work on this and I think we should all be grateful to you for that .

    Thanks a lot from me.

And from me. I contacted WETV and CTH myself, but the only useful information I've received has come from this thread. Thanks - Bangkok Blue.
