  1. First they will have to lodge an application, this has to be signed by 12 (yes twelve) ministries for approval. At any step along the way one of the ministries can refuse to sign for any reason they see fit, (read tea money) this process takes a year on average.

Secondly, the OP and his partner will be interviewed by the police on 3 (yes three) different occasions. Expect surprise police visits to the girlfriends' family house from the police hoping to find the Farang staying there illegally.

Thirdly, the OP will have to have a HIV and TB test. Obtain a letter from Scotland Yard to confirm he isn't a wanted criminal in The U.K.

(past criminal record is okay as long as it is not terrorist or anti government related) and a letter from The British Embassy to confirm he isn't already married.

If the OP wishes to do this all by himself, I wish him and his girlfriend the best of luck.

There is an agent in Vientiane who will do this for you for a few thousand dollars which I would urge you to do. He was a very highly ranked police officer and he will sort out the police for you. PM me for details.

Yes, I do believe that to marry a Laos national in Laos is fraught with obstacles.......... but I was asking about marriage in Thailand, just as though I was marrying a UK national here.

  2. Can I marry my girlfriend, who is of Laos nationality, in Thailand? We would like to live in Thailand but she would like to return to Laos every six months or so to visit her parents. I have a Non-Immigrant "O" visa with retirement extension and I have lived here in Thailand for many years. I am from the UK.

Thank you all for your advice and guidance relating to the feasibility and logistics of this proposal.

    Edit: Spelling

  3. There isn't a paper jam by any chance? Don't know the codes but flashing yellow seems to be use with feed problems on mine (no paper I believe is one).

Thank you for the rapid reply but there isn't a paper jam and the cassette tray has plenty of paper. The odd thing is that the print head stays firmly in place at the right side when I lift the top cover. So, it would also be impossible to gain access to the print head in order to change the ink cartridges! However, the ink cartridges aren't empty.

  4. I have a Canon printer, model IP3000. It has stopped working. No matter what I do following Canon's advice on trouble-shooting, the problem remains.

The machine powers up OK and the operating light illuminates green. Then it flashes yellow 5 times then green once and then yellow 5 times...... and so on until I switch it off!!

When I lift the top cover whilst the printer is powered up, the print head does NOT move into the centre of the machine as normal. It stays firmly locked in the right hand side of the opening. Nothing that I do will get it to traverse to the centre.

    Any ideas, please. Thank you.

  5. I have used BUPA for 13 years, continuously. I am now 70 years old and I have recently received my renewal notice for my policy which expires at the end of this month. When I joined BUPA, I was told that, because I was joining at 57 years old, I could renew this insurance for life.

However, my renewal notice shows an endorsement that states (BUPA's English, not mine) "Please kindly be informed that this is your last eligible renewal year due to the age at the next renewal year (sic) will fall into one of the following criteria :

    1. The maximum age for renewal
    2. The maximum age for Medical Evacuation & Repatriation benefit

So much for BUPA's initial assurance.

I will check this out tomorrow at the local BUPA office.

  6. Another pet peeve................. shop assistants, especially those of the third gender, following me around whilst I am just "browsing". I asked one yesterday what he/she/it wanted as he/she/it followed me whilst I was looking at some shirts. His/her/its response was "Take care".

  7. I cringe when I hear many farangs, especially those farangs who are in business here or are on the radio/television promoting various businesses, mispronounce local Thai place names. These people should really know better.

It's common place to hear them pronouncing Patta-ya as Pat-eye-yah or Par-tay yah! They pronounce Ra-yong as Ray-yong and Jom-tien as Jon-tiem.

As I have said, they really should know better.

  8. Burn oil to generate rotational force to generate electricity to charge a battery to drive an electric motor to generate rotational force turn to the wheels to propel the vehicle.

Burn oil to generate rotational force to turn to the wheels and propel the vehicle.

    ‘nuff said.

Well said. I hope that you wannabe engineers take note. It's about the Conservation of Energy. Energy can't be created or destroyed, it can only be changed from one form into another and it can flow from one place to another. The total energy of an isolated system remains the same.

The only thing that doesn't remain the same is the price!!!!!

  9. Not quite accurate. The Prius turns off when stopped at stoplights and such. This saves fuel. It converts kinetic energy from braking into electricity which is normally dissipated as heat in other cars. And the car stores energy in the battery to use to assist in acceleration (a major input to fuel consumption), allowing a smaller engine to be used for a given performance.

Based on Formula 1 KERS? (Kinetic Energy Recovery System)

  10. As well as being an ugly car, the Prius, and all the other hybrids around, is just an unnecessary scam. Sure, people buy with good intent but with little or no knowledge of energy usage. Using batteries as the power source sounds fine....... less fossil fuel being burned and less polution to the atmosphere!!!!!

Not so!!! Where is the energy sourced to produce the electricity to charge the batteries? Fossil fuel, of course. It's a great marketting ploy......... reduce the carbon footprint and "save the Earth". Nonsense!!

  11. any ideas?

Yes..... only one. After the Ssangyong Staviic MPV 4x2, and its other ugly siblings in the Ssangyong range, the current Toyota Prius must be the second ugliest car in Thailand. I don't know what Toyota has in store for the 2012 model but I'm sure the changes will be cosmetic only.

    Buy a different car.
