  1. When you buy a computer you take your passport along. They stamp a receipt with a form and hey presto you get to claim 7% back at the airport. Which for a 39,900 baht computer is 2,793 for those who do there sums. Seems worthwhile to me.

Or just wait until you get to singapore or HK and buy it for 12-15% cheaper than the Thai price... smile.png

That's what I'm looking to do in Singapore but all's I can find is prices that are more expensive than Thailand.

Google DG Lifestyle. It's a great chain of Apple authorized shops in Hong Kong. In September I bought a 13" MacBook Pro, 128 gb SSD, core i7 (not the basic model) and a iPad 2, 16gb WiFi at a price of about 59'566 baht for both.

The reason all electronics are cheaper in HK is because they do not have any tax/vat etc on these products. It's even cheaper than Singapore.

Hong Kong also has other chains such as Fortress and Broadway but I recommend DG Lifestyle because I sent them an email 6 months prior my trip and asked if it was possible to order a MacBook pro with extra features and received a reply the same day.

10-14 days before my departure I mailed my order details and what shop I would pick it. Once again I received once a reply with a confirmation.

iPads were out of stock and bought it at Broadway. More crazy and not so personal but friendly and helpfull staff that gives you great customer service.

DG Lifestyle and Fortress had stores at the airport 6 months ago.

    Cheers!

  2. March 8, 22:40, immigration/passport control: 4 minutes 40 seconds including that they opened 2 new booths upon arrival.

Luggage belt: minimum 35 minutes until my bag arrived.

March 21, arrived to the airport at 06:32, check in que: 15-20 min. Check in: 5-10 min. Passport and security: under 10 min. Through all walking away from security: 07:00.

  3. This thread not good enough?

    Agree but shortly..

  4. Terminal 1 is closed, so it would have to be 2.

Terminal 1 closed? Eehm no! I came there and stayed between 9:30 pm wednesday and 5:15 am yesterday morning due to transit.

Travelled with Cathay Pacific HKG-LHR going to Stockholm, Sweden.

I arrived at terminal 3, disembarked the aircraft, saw two signs that said "Immigration" and the second purple "flight connections" (correct me if I remember wrong) so I walked on the "walkalators" all the way, down the stairs where the signs in purple informed me where I should go. Came down and waited for the bus to terminal 5.

How the OP ended up walking through some what I understand is Heathrow airport staff hallways and "operating a large cargo elevator" which only could be operated with a key card is crock and bull****.

Even the buses are clearly signed "T3 to T4", "T5 to T1" etc. and before you board the bus (inside the terminal buildings at ALL transit bus stops there at at least one airport staff) that help you if you ask and the bus driver opens the doors. Over the doors there is a digital sign which informs the passengers when the next three buses will arrive and where it will go.

Buses are operated between ALL terminals so if you're leaving from terminal 3 you can choose to take the bus to terminals 1, 2, 4 and 5, easy and within 10 minutes depending on which terminal you're going to.

I think in my personal thoughts and feelings regarding Heathrow as an airport it's great... Except for 1 thing.

HOW THE FRACK (!!!) can one of the busiest airports in the world close at 10:30 pm?!?! Sure, there are no other flights departing until 5 am but <deleted>, there are passengers that have to stay in transit over night and do not have a choice other than hanging around.

For example. I Travelled BKK-HKG-LHR-ARN (Stockholm) and arrived from HKG at 8:40 pm. At that time I have been travelling for almost 18 hours.

My flight to Stockholm was at 7:15 am yesterday morning.

I took the bus between T3 to T5 and asked a BA staff at their information desk if they were able to allocate me to a lounge over night but all terminals except terminal 1 would close at 10:30 pm.

He suggested a hotel near the airport or terminal 1 that had a small area for transit passengers.

I went over to terminal 1 with yet another transit bus (easy to find by the way) and through security screening.

Everything seemed opened but they were due to close 30 minutes later.

Rushing through a beer everything closed.

At 11:15 pm there were no food, no shops, nothing except for a convenient store that was closing a few minutes later. Bought a stock of water, coke, a few sandwiches for the night I then sat down with my laptop. Shortly after a bunch of staff gathered all of us waiting and shuffled us like cattle to a gate size room where we had to sit or try to sleep (in lie down chairs) and a couple of vending mashines over night.

At 5:10, exactly 24 hours ago, I went to the transit buses but what makes me the most pissed off is that we could not board the bus because the bus driver couldn't open the terminal doors. They were locked from the inside and no staff to be seen. Just a few minutes after the bus left a bi*** came and unlocked the doors. I asked her why we couldn't get to the bus because we just missed it and she told me there would arrive another soon and that the doors had to be unlocked from the inside.

I told her that it would be great if there was staff on time unlocking them because the bus were there on time on schedule. Her answer? We as passengers chose a flights with long connecting times so we had our own fault to blame if we had to wait over night at a closed airport.

This is in my mind the only negative about Heathrow. Transit over night and one staff that need a few courses in people handling and anger management.

All other staff including security who are friendly and that you can joke with (no bomb/Taliban/etc. jokes though...) and great transit through the terminals. Efficient security and immigration. Cheap shopping and dining concidered LHR being one of the biggest airport in the world.

Well, now I shared a bit more than I first thought.

I just don't know how the hell OP ended up wherever he did but compared to Swampy (always had good luck through immigration and security, last time 5 minutes in and 25-30 including check in, passport and security) Heathrow is great!

    Cheers!!

  5. I don't really know about the 2-3 hour queues when leaving cause every time I have left BKK it took me maybe 20 minutes departing early in the morning and around midnight.

When I arrived on March 8 from Hong Kong at 9 pm it took me between 4 min 30 sec - 5 min sharp to clear immigration.

I followed everyones advice to see how long the queues were and picked a line that I guessed should have been an aprox 15-20 min.

In less than a minute they opened a new counter and I was number 4-5 in line. 3 minutes later they opened a second booth just when it was my turn.

The thing that caught my attention exempt for the speedy line was that there wasn't too many people waiting as it used to be but I guess that they expected more passengers in the next 10-20 minutes or so.

The only downer was I had to wait for my bag up to 35-40 minutes so the speedy immigration was great but it still took me 45-50 minutes to disembark my aircraft and clear the airport.

  6. RT @RichardBarrow: Fico Place in Bangkok has commercial space for rent if anyone is interested: 550 Baht/sq.m./month http://bit.ly/xD5bFQ

Aint it a bit expensive or will they include a full renovation in the price cause right now it has water damages, a bit smokey and overall quite run down... rolleyes.gif

Too bad for the owners and my thoughts goes to the people that was in the building and I hope that no one was hurt.

  7. I'm struggling to think of any airport I've been to anywhere in the world which in any way reflects the local culture and architectural styles. It's a functional building and functions well. The problems are all down to slow moving people.

The old airport had shorter walks etc, but was short of space. I generally prefer the new one. I just wish they would reopen the bar with the view of the tarmac.

Actually pier F that is the new terminal building part of terminal 5 at Stockholm/Arlanda Airport in Sweden reflects pretty well with Swedish culture and architecture.

It's a shame that not just pier F but the whole airport is one of the most boring airports in the whole world.

SBIA is quite boring too but it's a relief to arrive there and walk around. It suits me better...

I transferred this Tuesday from Stockholm heading to Hong Kong and will arrive again next Monday.

I just hope that theres no long waiting lines at the immigration in the middle of the day. Cross my heart...

  8. Just an experience i had

...i've started using business class lhr-bkk-lhr now for my last few flights...definately worth it if you can afford it...tried several airlines and all pretty good altho non stoppers are the best...BUT my last trip from BKK to London was a nightmare..Business was half empty and we all thought within minutes of takeing off we might have a nice comfortable environment...then it just filled up with women and kids...well that was it, screaming and bottle feeding and flight attendants spending all their time taking care of them...turns out it was overflow from economy and they got upgraded free gratis...

not a nice experince .....same thing happened on second leg....Qatar airline wasnt very helpfull when i send an email to them asking for some sort of compensation...just a reduction on my next flight would have been nice....after all i paid good money to travel that class...SO!... all tho's who say upgrades are great ...think about it if you've paid full wack for your seat...the difference being £1000 for me that time.

    I sure understand your feelings.

My thought when I read your post is that if they upgrade passengers from eco to business they might have done so prior boarding discreet... Sure, it is the same thing, you pay full price for your ticket but it must sting when you are looking forward to your first drink and meal order and instead your cabin gets overcrowded women and their kids.

    Cheers!

  9. It was not swinging... It was Gangbang. But like always... "Same same... But different". B) I still it´s not prostitution, they are a couple enjoying a bit more than having sex only in the missionary and perhaps doggy. I guess they wanted to enjoy this once and see if they liked it as she did a couple of years ago. Instead of everyone in their village to know about their fantasies they advertised in Bangkok and wanted a few Baht for the traveling expenses. I just don´t see the point! Instead the Police should ask the 55yr old, 130kg man and his 19yr old "girlfriend" how they met.nothing wrong being a bit chubby and love can find its way and shapes, but that "sounds a bit fishy"...

  10. Hi Richard!

    Thanks, appreciate you writing back.

Yeah, I know it´s a flight case, at work colleagues has tools and other stuff in it so it´s automatically a tool case... rolleyes.gif

How much did you pay for yours? In Sweden I´ll cost somewhere in between Bt 30´000-40´000. My thought was to maybe save a bit.

    Cheers!

  11. Hi all!

I´m looking for a toolcase similar to this as the picture shows.

Does anyone know where I can find one, new or second hand does not matter as long as it is in a good condition.

I am working in the music business as a technician and need one for when I am touring. So I thought it would be cheaper getting one when I am in Bangkok in September/October on holiday.

    Cheers and thanks!

  12. I checked the price Stockholm-Bangkok.

Take a look at the attached screenshots below:

The price is the same as if you would have bought 2 original priced tickets.

The same happened when Qatar released the same deal about a month ago.

Maybe it´s something wrong with the website or it´s a trick to earn money...

    Cheers!

  13. I would recommend you to contact DG Lifestyle Store. It´s a chain of stores like Fortress etc. and they are Apple authorized.

I went to their website and checked the prizes on MBP 13" with i7, 700GB HD etc. You know, the top 13" model.

Then I sent an email regarding the upgraded model and if I could order it a couple of weeks prior my arrival and later pick it and this is the response that I got:

    Dear Tobias,

Thanks for your enquiry. We can only get you “English US” keyboard in Hong Kong.

We are happy to have the unit ready for you upon your arrival. I may suggest, you

can decide which unit you wanted to buy, cause they might have new update by

the time you visit Hong Kong. Looking forward to see you soon. Thanks.

    Reginald Ko

    DG Lifestyle Store

So a moth before leaving I´ll make my order and pick it up a couple of blocks away from my hotel.

The prize will be the same as Apple Store online.

    Cheers and good luck!

  14. My favorite beer-drinking bar is at Soi 7/1, Down Under Bar.

I remembered that place from 2006 and last time I was in Bngkok last year I had my daily (a couple or dozens) beers watching and surprisingly enjoying cricket and having a meat pie with ketchup and bbq sauce.

Great guys and Rob is hilarious! Always having his daily rum/coke... :D

Sure, NEP aint what it was but after sitting drinking my beers at DUB I always end up at Morning & Night at Soi 4.

Terrific DJ that plays the greatest rock music. The last evening he gave me and a friend a couple of shots on his tab. :jap:

When they close I go to the corner of Suk/Rama on the Soi Cowboy side where I sit get my share of Jack/coke. I always bay for 3 (300 B) and get 5.

Great guy and fun people there at the small sidewalk bar.

  15. <br>Another country in whose products I have faith in is Sweden. I hope that SAAB recover from the period of horror resulting from working under the GM banner.<br>

  16. i fly with aerosvit too many times for the cheapest fares but i will not recommend it due to the poor service and old aircrafts. and if you miss your connecting flight from kiev and wait for the next bkk flight there is nothing to do in kiev airport except drinking. if i were you i will stick to turkish airlines. they have very ood inflight service and even if you miss your connecting flight they offer you free istanbul city tour and airport lounge access

Thanks! I know they are one of the worst airlines in Europe but a fun story happened to a guy from a Swedish forum.

He flew with Aerosvit not long ago. As usual they did not serve alcohol onboard but he sat next to a Russian or Ukranian that brought a bottle of vodka on to the plane that he shared.

A while later he ended up in the lavatory vomiting all over, shitfaced drunk. :bah: And the F/A did not bother cleaning it up.

    The Swede was amused. :D

Now I have booked with Thai instead, direct Stockholm-BKK-HKG, HKG-BKK, BKK-ARN... Ended up paying 6515 SEK (982 $)... Just in time before they add at least 150 $ in taxes/fulecosts starting April 4.

  17. Hi all!

I´m trying to kidnap a friend for his first trip to Thailand in September and I have to get the cheapest ticket possible.

I found a ticket with Aerosvit outbound Stockholm/Arlanda Sept 14, return Oct 8. Stopover in Kiev aprox 2 hours both ways.

Total price incl. taxes: 10565 Baht (2300 SEK).

My question is if it is worth it?

Depending on this months income, I will probably fly with Turkish...

    Cheers and thanks!

  18. Welcome, this is your captain sleeping

    October 26, 2009

LOS ANGELES: Airline passengers who are shaken by news that two Northwest Airline pilots are under investigation for

overshooting a Minneapolis airport after possibly nodding off will not want to hear this: sometimes pilots sleep in the cockpit.

''Pilots on occasion do take controlled naps,'' said Barry Schiff, an aviation safety consultant and retired pilot. ''So this is not without precedent.''

Although the Federal Aviation Administration bars snoozing in the cockpit,

several airline pilots say they are surprised such napping mishaps have not happened more often, considering longer work schedules for pilots

and advances in aviation that make planes easier to fly.

Advertisement: Story continues belowThe issue of cockpit naps came under scrutiny after the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board announced

they were looking into why Northwest Flight 188, from San Diego to Minneapolis, overshot its airport by 240 kilometres before turning around.

If investigators conclude that the Northwest pilots were snoozing at 37,000 feet, several current and retired pilots say it would not be a surprise.

''Fatigue is a real problem,'' said Sam Mayer, an American Airlines pilot and spokesman for the Allied Pilots Association, the union that represents 11,500 American Airlines pilots. '

'I don't know what happened [in Minneapolis], but I wouldn't be surprised if they were asleep.''

It would not be the first time.

A Go Airline flight in February overshot Hilo International Airport in Hawaii by more than 30 kilometres.

The pilots admitted to federal officials that they fell asleep in the cockpit while the plane was on autopilot.

A safety board report said there was an 18-minute gap when no one could reach the flight by radio.

One of the pilots admitted later to investigators that he regularly took planned naps in the cockpit but said this was the first time he had inadvertently fallen asleep. Both pilots were fired.

In 2004 a pilot admitted to federal officials that he and the first officer on an Airbus A319 fell asleep on an overnight flight from Baltimore to Denver.

They awoke to frantic radio calls from the air traffic control tower.

In 1998 all three pilots on a Boeing 747 from Seoul to Anchorage, Alaska, nodded off.

The plane landed safely but the captain admitted that he and his crew made several minor navigational errors because of fatigue.

''Each time when I awoke,'' he told federal aviation officials in an anonymous report that did not name the airline, ''the other two crew members were also asleep.''

I just found this when reading some other news and I thought it would interest some of you...

I´m sure one might take a power-nap while the other has control but these stories are scary.Any opinions or thoughts regarding this subject?

By the way, September 12 I´m off to Hong Kong and arriving Bangkok September 19th! Can´t wait, as long as the pilots don´t sleep during approach... blink.gif

    Cheers!
