  1. something very sashimi fishy going wrong here 10k a gun holster ,guns not the normal trekking pack stuff here (gps and chocolate bars ect) seen one of the cops in the pic he"s on the bus check points a lot going up to masai seen him on visa runs. So whats it all about?could be a contracted hit even or a deal gone wrong funny that one of the japs was wearing a gun on the trekk??? for shooting birds maybe? very strange but a drug encounter of some degree more likely maybe more will come out soon interesting.Self defence is plausable at this stage maybe when the wounded man tlaks if he talks we might find out. I didn't know you could pack iron on trekking tours unless your afraid the tour guides a loose canon.

One word comes to mind... opium. Lots of it.

The tour guide has his office just down the street from my home and my Thai girlfriend knows him as an OK person. The village where the shootout took place is known as a "drug village" and this would look to me like a drug deal gone wrong except for the fact that the Japanese gangster was to high up to be doing an underlings drug purchasing work. Big boys don't take chances and carry the drugs themselves. The money was just the way a hood like this carries his cash around. They don't like to use credit cards, travellers checks or ATM cards. Japanese hoods are known to have bad tempers and if this nut also needed to carry a gun on a trek then a hot argument with the guide could get the hood angry enough to pull his gun. He may have been on yaba too. One less rat in town. What's the problem?

  2. Home owner is required to advise local police and there is a small fine for not doing so; and many Thai do not feel it is something they will do unless made to do so. Although there is a law that requires personal reporting for any move by those who are not here as tourists it is not in general enforcement and most people/police would much prefer it remain that way from reports.

The police should be informed by the landlord. Immigration should be informed about the change of address by the person moving, on the day or before the move is made. That is why they stapled a reminder in my passport. They were very eager to keep the copy of the police report which was made one the first day I moved in by the landlord.

  3. I went to immigration yesterday expecting a big fine of 5k plus 200baht for each day I was late in informing immigration of my change of address. I took my police report of the change which they kept. So many people must be doing the same thing because they only stapled a warning in my passport that says that the change of address must be on or before I actually change my residence. No fines which was fine for me. I have no idea if this is happening at other immigration offices.

    Cheers

  4. Hotels do not require you to make any police report - they make the report (if they feel like it - in many cases they will register the Thai half if married to avoid it). You can try to make a report on temporary or permanent change but in most cases you will be told to forget it and just report a permanent change at your next normal 90 day address report interval. Currently only the hotel and 90 day reports are likely to be actively enforced.

Since the new address has already been reported to the local cops I needn't say anything about my change of address at my 90 day report. They will not bother to find my old copies of my old address so I won't have to worry about the 5k baht fine and the 500baht per day fine for reporting late? The police here in Chiang Rai station don't keep records of address reports. I tried to get a copy today.

    Thanks

I got my landlord to go with me to the local police where we easily found the land lady/llandlord report. My 90 day report is to be made in Sept. The tourist police and the regular police didn't know about the need for the report. They don't know there own rules.

  6. On the 90 day reporting, they want a TM.47 filled out. But, do they really want a photo copy of every page of my passport with stamps?

I just finished a 90 day report without photo copies of all the passport pages when I got my retirement extension, except for copies of my non-immigrant o visa, the TM.6 and first page of my passport

  7. I went to Mae Sai immigration on the 27th to get a retirement extension expecting a large hassle in that they wanted 800k in the bank and a 40k per month income. I suspected a tea money hustle for any reason they could find but someone higher up must have informed them that their requirements were not in the rule book. They gave me the extension with only the 800k in the bank and didn't even ask to see proof of income of any kind.

I once read on this forum that immigration officers read the posts here from time to time. My guess is that someone higher up read that spicy thread on 'Government corruption and tea money' and learned of my problem with Mae Sai.

One strange thing though was the need of a letter from a doctor. I told them that I didn't know that that was required and they just sent me 200 meters down the street to a hospital where they took my passport, copied my name and gave me a form letter for 50 baht. No questions about my health were asked and I didn't see a doctor.

From a big problem to no problem for God only knows way.

  8. My choice is paying a few thousand baht (if that is what they will take) to the Mae Sai immigration officers or flying round trip to Bangkok's Suan Phlu, a few nights in a hotel and taxi fares at a cost of 4700 baht. Not to mention the queue and the work at Suan Phlu.

When the time comes I'm going to resist paying any tea money until the quiet conversation is at a dead end and I have no way out of it.

  9. My comment was that perhaps Mae Sai was unable to provide using 800k because you did not have the required 3 months and as an alternative suggested that that could provide approval if you could show income of 40k (and thus avoid the three month rule).

Long before I had 800k in the bank I asked Mae Sai what papers, photos, information they would want from me when I applied for the retirement extension. That is when they demanded 40k per month income plus 800k in the bank. When I told them that I only had 30k per month income they shrugged their shoulders and walked away.

  10. Perhaps the 40k was what they wanted to see to allow you to obtain extension without the 3 months of 800k deposit?

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No....Not even close. I wasn't trying to get the extension at Suan Phlu. I wanted Suan Phlu to inform the Mae Sai office that I didn't need 40k per month income plus 800k in the bank. I'm sure that the guys at Mae Sai know that 800k in the bank is enough. That is why I smell tea money.

  11. Hi Folks,

I'm currently being subtly pressured for tea money to get a retirement extension by the immigration office at Mae Sai. They want me to show a 40k baht per month income plus 800k in the bank. The 800k is, by law, enough. Even though I've been lucky enough to get the 40k a month income and have the papers to prove it, I believe the guys at Mae Sai will find a reason to deny me the visa to get their tea money. My only hope of getting past these crooks is a phone call from Suan Phlu setting them straight. But the problem with that is getting someone to answer the phone in Bangkok and connecting me with the official high enough to tell these guys to back off. I got the feeling when I went to Suan Phlu with this problem a month ago that they didn't want to be bothered by a small faraway problem like mine. In the end I may be forced to pay the tea money to get the retirement extension. Is paying a bribe illegal? I would think so.

Why didn't they give you a ret. ext.at Suan Phlu?

I showed a certificate from my embassy stating pension of 65k+ and some money in the bank, piece of cake.

But I went to Suan Phlu 8 Feb to ask for a certificate of residence, office 205 or 206? and was told that would take one month?

I walked away, was this a hint for tea money?

Last year in Amphur Nong Han I went to get a drivers license with int. DL.

Can't do I was told unless I paid 1k baht.

Went to car registration Nong Sung outside Udon town to change registration from Chumpon to Udon prov.

Was told the original Toyota Vigo tyres were not "approved", cost 500B tea money to get over the issue :o

    Etc

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I didn't get the ret. ext. because my 800k hadn't been in the bank for 3 months yet.

  12. I also find it hard to believe the mentality of some people.

Complain about the politics of the place then condone similar behavour from lesser officials. Where do you think acceptance of this behaviour originates?

Illegal bribes should never be paid, just to make your life a little bit easier. Knowing how this country works you must get your affairs in good order and have ample time to achieve eash process. It will then work without any 'tea money' (awfully shameful name for an illegal and corrupt process).

Recently the missus sold some land in Nakon .... One of the head land office guys is notoriosly corrupt, and actually told my missus that she must give the underlings some cash, or else. He was rude and indignant about it, shouting at her in full view of others. Of course, she didn't pay, and she escalated the matter thus giving him a problem. When she goes back to sell some more land in future I'm sure that they won't like her, and will try to obstruct her in every way they can. When this happens we will again escalate it to higher and higher athorities until it is dealt with correctly. If everyone acted in this socially and legally responsible manner then Thai society would have some chance of developing in a way that benefits normal citizens rather than selfish and corrupt scum bags.

    Just my thoughts.

I'm being pressured to pay tea money to two immigration officers at Mae Sai for a retirement extension. If I am denied the extension they can say, to an inquiring official from Bangkok immigration, that they refused me because I showed up dirty and half drunk. They really do have me in a no choice situation

  14. The rule is Police Order 606/2006 and there are links to two English translations and the Thai in the pinned items at the top of this forum.

If you want a retirement extension of stay it requires 800k in bank three months, 65k per month income/pension at confirmed by a letter from your Embassy or a combination of the two to amount to 800k. There is no discount for being married to a Thai. Section 7.21 of the above order.

If you want to extend by being married to a Thai it is 40k family income only. Section 7.17 of the above order.

Thanks for that. I have a copy now and that might make a difference.

I thought that you needed 40k per month income with your 800k in the bank if you are married to a Thai. I'm not married.

    Cheers,

    Joe

  15. Did you request the issue of a single entry non immigrant O visa while you had 21 days or more remaining on your 30 day entry? They will not normally accept such a visa issue without meeting that condition.

It is hard to follow your posts but it appears you may have applied with less then 21 days remaining so they told you to make a second visa exempt trip; which you did, but then had less than 21 days remaining when you visited immigration? Sorry if I am wrong but am trying to understand what happened - often times there are little subtleties that can make all the difference.

I had just finished crossing the border at Mae Sai to get my 30day visa exempt stamp and was told by immigration that I had to go to another country to get a non-immigrant o visa for my retirement extension. So I went to Penang and got it. But you told me that immigration could have given the non-o on the back of the visa exempt stamp for a fee of 2k baht. They don't know their own rules or they were looking for some offer of tea money. Much cheaper to give them 5k baht than to take the long trip to Penang.

Now I face these same twits again who claim that I need 40k baht per month income with my 800k in the bank to get my retirement extension. I went to Suan Phlu to complain and get a letter or phone call from some official there to Mae SAi but was told by the information lady that that wasn't possible. I've tried the 1111 immigration number and couldn't get anyone to answer the phone. I tried many times.

Now I please would like to get a link to the page in the official immigration rule book that describes the retirement requirements, especially the part that deals with the 40k baht income per month if you are married to a Thai. I would like to have something official in my hand to show the guys at Mae Sai. Can you do that for me Lopburi3?

  16. Joe Joe, I believe there is no written, published rule about this. Not every province has its own immigration office, and it is generally assumed that people would deal with the office in their area. However, I have seen many reports where people bypassed their local office and went to Bangkok for an annual extension. Can’t remember seeing anything about going from Chiangrai to Chiangmai, but this should not stop you from trying.

As for your address report every 90 days, you can send it to the immigration office in Bangkok by registered mail. Send it off in good time to arrive before the due date.

Maestro, Thanks for this information. It is just what I needed.
