  1. For every racist here yelling about how "Thais go around looking to beat up foreigners" - you should educate yourself on psychopathy. Approximately 6% of the global population (or 1 in 100 people) are psychopaths. They lack a conscience, can easily commit unspeakable acts of crime or violence, and tend to associate or collaborate with other psychopaths (often in gangs, crime families, corporations or governments). They exist in every country and come from all cultural backgrounds and races. You could bump into one of them anywhere.

Learn how the psychopathic mind operates.

    Learn how to identify them.

If visiting a foreign country learn about their culture and customs, including the negatives.

Show respect, don't be an ass.

Don't get too intoxicated in public.

Know how to de-escalate a situation or to walk away.

  2. My breakdown of, and lessons learned from this very unfortunate incident:

The video starts off with 2 Thai gangsters to the left of screen having a very heated discussion. At the exact same time there's a farang in a blue shirt at the top of screen having a laugh with some bargirls(?). The Brit family then comes from the top of screen with the son (black shirt) in front. Blue shirt invites black shirt into the bar for a drink but he doesn't accept. He should have accepted. That is the fatal moment this all kicks off.

Lesson 1: Always accept drink invitations from friendly strangers

0:17 Because black shirt is distracted by blue shirt (and also looks tipsy/drunk) he turns around to keep walking without noticing the passing gangsters. Gangster #2 pushes gangster #1 away in anger and walks off. Gangster #1 quickly runs after #2 to try and grab him but at the same moment the Brit's arm touches his, and for some reason the Brit decides to grab Gangster #1. Big mistake

Lesson 2: While on holiday, do not grab the locals

0:20 Gangster #1 retreats back to push the son Brit who grabbed him. Unfortunately the video skips just as he pushes him so it's hard to judge the force of the shove. That push should not have sent the Brit to the ground, but the Brit has one occupied hand holding his Mum's and he also looks back at the direction of the push instead of the direction that he is traveling. He then accidentally trips himself! His back foot hits his front foot and that's what sends his face flying onto the step a few feet away. He is also quite top-heavy and seems drunk. To be fair to him though the ground looks wet.

Lesson 3: Stay fit and take part in exercises that will improve your coordination and balance

0:26 Brit Mum goes over to Gangster #1, puts her hand on him and gets all up in his grill. Gangster (holding a beer in his left hand) is not impressed. He staunches up and they begin to argue.

0:50 Brit Mum slaps Gangster #1 in the face. This was an incredibly stupid move. Seriously, if you have a problem call the police. You never know who you're dealing with. They then continue their arguing while a crowd forms around them. It's hard to see what's happening but it looks like British Dad (purple floral shirt) throws a punch at 1:14 at Gangster #2 while the Son wraps his arms around him. At 1:16 Tiny Gangster (black shirt) throws a strike at Brit Mum's body and face. Notice Tall Farang (white shirt black cap) trying his best to break up the altercation. Also notice at 1:18 another farang (Russian looking - mullet haircut with striped shirt) comes into the fracas from the top of screen and tries to calm things.

Now it gets really bad. At 1:20 watch Gangster #2 break free from the grasp of Brit Son. He then proceeds to pretend to walk away but instead he circles the whole crowd, zeroes in on Brit Dad (who had punched him earlier) and runs straight at him while delivering a brutal straight left to the face. Dad goes down hard. Gangster #2 then follows up with a devastating soccer kick to the head of the floored Dad after he attempts to get up.

At 1:29 Tiny Gangster Red (top of screen) sees Gangster #2 go for the punch and decides it is on. He escapes the clutches of his girlfriend to join in, punches Brit Son in the back (who barely flinches) and is then stopped by the much bigger Russian. Tiny Red proceeds to land multiple punches and a knee to the body of the Russian. It is at this point 1:35 that Tall Farang realizes the futility of trying to help out and hilariously throws his hands up in frustration and leaves the scene from the top.

Also at 1:35 Mum & Son both approach Gangster #2 after he KO'd Dad. He reacts by delivering a left to the face of Mum and then another to the slowly-approaching Son. They both go down.

Lesson 4: Many Thai men are knowledgeable in the art of Muay Thai kickboxing

Tiny Red is still fighting with the Russian and at this point 1:41 Tiny Red's girlfriend tries to get in between them. Now this part is crazy! The Russian goes for the clinch but Girlfriend gets between them at that exact same moment. Because Russian is still being blinded by the rapid punches of Tiny Red he mistakenly picks up the girl and throws her to the ground, before being ushered away by his own female companion.

Lesson 5: Do not jump into the middle of a fight unless you are trained in martial arts

1:42 Meanwhile after the Son gets knocked down, Gangster #2 walks around behind him and delivers 3 brutal soccer kicks to the back of his head. This is incredibly devastating and could easily cause a serious injury or fatality. Gangster #1 also makes an appearance and stomps on Son's head 3 times. Those two bumping into each other was the original catalyst for this melee.

1:46 Gangster #4 leaves the worst for last. Tough as nails Brit Dad is on all fours attempting to get up again and Gangster #4 delivers a running soccer kick to his head, KOing him. He then sees Brit Mum coming to her senses and delivers another devastating soccer kick to her face knocking her out. This is incredibly sickening and that coward should be locked up for a long time.

Lesson 6: Sometimes it's better to stay down and play dead

Gangster #2 then claps his hands and that's a wrap. They exit the scene while onlookers begin to help the victims. You cannot blame bystanders for not getting involved and simply protecting themselves.

I'm not blaming the victims here, but after dissecting the video I see how they were at fault for escalating the situation. Accidents happen and they unfortunately bumped into the wrong people. Sometimes it is better to swallow your pride, walk away and forget that something happened, especially when you are a guest abroad in a foreign country.. Some cultures have different ways of doing things and often put a different price on the value of human life. Generally if you are respectful you will easily avoid any trouble. I sincerely hope that the victims make a full recovery and that the attackers are delivered a proportionate punishment.

  3. re: rent: I only need to "rent" a small area of the beach. Do you know who controls this? Who I have to pay/prices etc?

I will probably look to also rent a small office area but this can be moved at will and is not extremely important. (Do I NEED to do this as part of the business?)

I guess I can't stop Thai staff from undercutting me, but I assume that foreigners are more likely to trust other foreigners when it comes to potentially dangerous activities.

I am most worried about being threatened with physical harm, kidnapped, shot.. things like that.

  4. You will need 2 million in capital to form a company, 30 % must be capitalized.

You will need to employ four Thais / foreigner to get work permits.

Look at 630.000 baht to set up the company alone.

Thanks for the info, can you please elaborate a bit more? Do you mean 30% in cash the rest in assets?

Will the 2 million include everything from scratch? (including work permits for 1 or 2 foreigners?).

Also is it adequate (legal-wise) to employ 2 foreigners + 2 Thais?

A friend of mine said he paid only 25K baht to set up a company, this was around 10 yrs ago.

upsetting the locals depends on you. It should be noted that most of the people on the island are no longer local so bear that in mind, more than 2/3 of the population are people there just to do business

That's what I mean, the "locals" that are there to do business.

A few kind of business are almost completely local people turf. Among them a few water/extreme/tourist sports. That doesn't means you'll upset them, but check carefully before any investment and sound a few months the local situation.

This I definitely am aware of, like I said this is new and nobody is doing it there yet.

I'm just concerned that when/if I start to make a lot of baht that the locals will want a piece of the pie or consider myself a threat/threaten me. I would hate to start up something and then have it end due to this happening. Just wondering if anyone can give me a realistic assessment (but I understand the sometimes lawless nature of doing business in Thailand).

Thank you I appreciate the help

  5. This guy does a bunch of user-submitted pickup lines on Thai girls. It's a fun watch and he has like 10+ vids of him getting phone numbers etc. Some lines are more creative than others, but you can get an idea of what works and doesn't work on normal thai girls.

Sorry only just saw this, thank you so much for the link!

Exactly what I was looking for

  6. Since you obviously isn't fluent in Thai, I think by just saying the above in Thai should be good enough and if she's interested she'll respond positively, but if not, she may just pretend she doesn't understand you or something....

If it's for some kind of pick up line you'd like to use on girls, I suggest you simply say it in English.

What if this was the only Thai you could say and if she doesn't speak a word English, then what....

Hey thanks, actually my Thai is quite good (or it was a few yrs ago), I've been to school and can read/write basics but I just don't know how to translate the thought of "being random". So I'd be saying this to ridiculously good-looking "normal" girls and also ones that might not speak (or want to speak) English. It's a bit forward to approach a stranger and right off the bat tell them they're cute, but if you start it off with a casual "hey this might be a bit random", well it's a good intro and it's something that they will subconsciously agree with. They think 'yes it is random for a stranger/foreigner to approach me and talk in Thai'.... and then that's when I tell them ผมว่าคุณน่ารักดี

And then we have a date and get married :)

  7. How would you say this in Thai:

"Hi, this might be a bit random, but I noticed you there and I think that you are really cute."

Also any other recommendations for pickup most welcome.

  8. Check latestaysdotcom 2 or3 weeks before your trip for a bargain.

10,000bht rooms in top Kata resorts are currently available for under 3000baht on this site. You wont miss out on a bargain.

This is amazing, thank you very much

  9. Awww! Do you have a plan yet?

heh not really, I know what to do I'll just wait for the right moment and if I feel it.. :)

It's a shame you have no intention of exploring the island, but each to their own.

I've been to Phuket before (well, Patong) and I used to live in Thailand so I'm pretty familiar with what's to offer. This trip is simply to meet up, enjoy a nice beach and eat some nice food.

    Thanks for the hotel tip

  10. Thanks for the replies everyone, yea Koh Samet is not an option, I'm flying straight to Phuket from Oz.

I should've been clearer but we're really just looking to stay inside our room for a week, or have a room that's very close to a beach.

Kata Beach sounds nice I'll check it out.

Also we're flying in from different countries (I'm arriving a day before), so any suggestions on a nice place/beach I can stay for 1 night that's relatively close to the airport?

Thanks again and wish me luck, Phuket is as good a place as any to propose right? :)

  11. OK so I'm planning a trip to Phuket early July with my future wife (never thought I would go to Thailand to hang out with a western girl but whatever).... so anyway I've only ever been to Patong and it's not the greatest place.

What would be the best beach for us to stay at?

I would like somewhere that's relatively quiet, nice clean beach, but still has maybe some bars close or somewhere where something is going on at night.

Also around the 3000bt a night price range for a room so any hotel recommendations are welcome too.

    TIA

  12. เห็ดขี่่ควย

    Haha nice one :P

I imagine the OP is trying to be clever and render the English terms "fuc_k you" and "fuc_k me" into Thai script.

Trying to be funny, I don't do clever.

    I chuckled when I found ผู้ฝาก = depositor

  13. Just had a few weeks in Thailand after a few years away, surprisingly my Thai was still pretty good but I've forgotten a lot.

Anyway, what's the correct way of saying "wasn't supposed to" or "wasn't going to" e.g:

"I wasn't going to come back to Phuket, but we changed our plans."

Also what's the best word for saying "respect", as in showing respect for someone.

Also do these phrases mean anything? (yes immature but I thought it was funny :)

    ฝากอยู่

    ฝากมี

    thank you
