  1. Hi, I was wondering does anyone knows any affordable/budget 5.1 system to enjoy casual movie nights? Back in EU there were plenty of choices, even the dvd+speaker system was affordable. here in Thailand all I can see is karaoke 2.1 type of speakers, or huge overpriced systems. I am looking for something that doesn't have to be loud, and needs to have digital audio input.

Microlab has a nice cheap surround, but there is no digital audio in.

I'm in about a similar situation as you, thinking of buying a cheap, small car once I'm back to Thailand - hopefully in September. Don't want to spend more than THB 230k for the car. Prefer a hatchback, as I don't need the trunk.
So the models which are affordable are Ford Fiesta, Chevi Sonic, MG 3 and probably a Suzuki Swift or a Mazda 2 if you are lucky to find a good deal.
What I know is that thais don't like Ford and Chevi, they are more into Toyota, Honda etc. But about the quality I have no idea. I've only read about the transmission problems of the Fiestas.

Another option on  my list is Mazda 2 or 3.  It seems like a decent car for the price range.

  3. I was wondering does anyone have any experience with Chevrolet Sonic car? Or Ford Fiestas? I am planning on buying a car, preferably something smaller so its easier to park. Recently I saw so many Chevrolet Sonics and Ford Fiestas for sale around 160k.. Any idea why ppl sell them so much? And is is a good purchase, how about the parts and repairs? Any input  or other  option appreciated!

It seems you left your old job under friendly circumstances. When that occurs, you should get a postdated resignation letter to avoid the overstay issue. The immigration office had no alternative to fining you. You provided documentation admitting the four day overstay.

Yea that was the case, the thing is they didn't know that the resignation date has to be timed as well, they thought it was just work permit that has to be cancelled within the same day as visit to immigration.

So this is official law or something that is implemented recently? Any source for this?

  5. Just got back from immigration and had to pay for 4 days of overstay.

I was in process of changing job from one place to another.

I resigned from my previous job on 31st of May- on the form it says that my last day at work will be 31st of May. The HR staff from my previous work cancelled my Work permit today 4th of June.

I went to immigration in order to report cancellation of work permit, to cancel my visa and get 7day extension of stay in order to prepare paperwork for the new job and new visa.

But, when I summited my documents I was informed that I had to pay for overstay of 4 days, then apply for covid visa extension after 7 days.

Does anyone knows is this something new or? The HR staff from my previous employer didn't know about it, they even contacted immigration prior of doing paperwork and they confirmed the procedure is correct.

As far as my employer knew, when you resign from your old job, HR staff has 7 days to cancel WP and within the sme day to notify immigration. But it turns out this wasnt the case.

    Any help appreciated.

  6. I am currently employed at Prince of Songkhla University as a graphic designer/student outreach job position. I have non-b visa and work permit that will expire in 5 months. Recently I found a teaching job that suits my needs better. So, I applied and passed the interview.

Now in 3 days school wants me to sign the contract.
Before the interview I already submitted these papers Medical certificate, passport copies, copies of work permit, language certificates, degree certificates.

Today lady from school told asked me about some letter of work permit cancelation, to maybe bring that too. But I don't have it yet as I still didn't cancel my old work permit (my employer agreed on that until I make sure I have everything ready for the new job)

Can someone tell me exact procedure for this, and when should I cancel my old work permit?

    As far as i understand:

    1. I need to sign the contract with school

    2. Cancel my work permit

    3. Go to immigration and get 7 day visa extension

Then in order to obtain new visa and work permit I am a bit confused, it says that I will have to get teachers license- and that takes up to few months. So how can I wait few months to get that if I have only 7 days to fix new papers with my new employee? Or em I missing something?

In short, when would be the best way to cancel my work permit and visa and not end up in some mess?

    thanks

  7. Just got back from Kota Bharu.

Minivan from Hat Yai to Sungai Kolok (counter 22) ticket is 200b, the van starts to operate at 6 am and goes every 1 hour or when the seats are full. Trip duration is around 4 hours. One stop fro toilet break. (you should tell the driver to leave you at the border or else he will take you to the downtown).

Walked across the immigration and border, then when you enter Malaysia just follow the sidewalk on the left side of the road, at the end of walkway there is a bus 29 for Kota Bharu, ticket is 5 ringit or 50 baht. The duration is around 1h 20 mins. The bus will stop at one buss station but that is not Kota Bharu, its some other city where bus stops to pick more people.

Make sure to sit on the left side of the bus since during the day right side of the bus gets so sunny and you will end up cooking whole trip like i did smile.png

When you arrive at Kota Bharu it will leave you in front of all guest houses, hotels etc..from there Thai embassy is like 1km down the road, i didn't use the taxi and it took me 20 mins to get there walking really slow. The office opens at 9 am, no need to go there before 9 am since everyone will get application at once, so no numbers etc. Make sure to have glue and pen- that will speed up you process. If you need to copy documents there is one shop that can do it across the embassy like 150m down the road, so the best is if you have everything prepared before.

I was the only person there that day, and the lady asked me few questions like what em i doing at Thailand, where do i live, how long i will stay, and she mentioned that i can't get any more visa after that one since i already have one double entry in my country.

So i have only one double entry tourist visa so far. Then she asked for 110 ringit and told me to come tomorrow at 10am to pick my passport.

Tomorrow i collected my passport at 10am, checked out from my hotel and i was ready for the trip back to Hat Yai.

The bus for Border was at 11:30am - 5 ringits.

On the border i was kinda scared they will ask for 20k baht and i had only like 11k, but the officer just asked where do i live, what em i doing on thailand, wished me good luck and thats all.

After i crossed the border, i would usually walk to the minivan counter to buy ticket, but looks like they moved that counter now, they made new minivan station(or it was there all the time but i didn't know since i used that counter close to the border)

So this time i had like 7-8 ringints left in my pocket and no use to bring them to Thailand,so just took motorbike to the station.- it turned out to be very good idea since the van station is quite far away from the border so for 5 ringints i would never hesitate again.

Arrived at Hat Yai, took local tuk tuk to my house.

Njoying some beer atm once again.

Gl to all travelers. Hope it helps. If you have questions feel free to ask.

BTW my original post was this one here,http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/802982-20-000-b-on-border/

but since i was using forum in the internet caffe i didn't know my password so i just created new account to ask about that 20k policy. If mods want they can delete that account or just leave it, its up to them, i'll make sure i have my forum password for the trip next time.

  8. I think the reason is simple: you're living here on a tourist visa and she doesn't like that.

Well i pay for her salary every 2 months, she should be happy instead. I don't work here, me and my GF are not married so the only thing atm is tourist visa, i usually carry recommendation letters from my gfs PHD professors in case they need poof or something. And most of the staff already know our situation, i usually write that as a reason for extension "to stay with my gf until she finish her studies".

  9. Hi i live in Hat Yai with my gf that studies here for a long time and i am on tourist visa. Usually when i need to get my 30 day extension in immigration office i submit my filled form, passport and signed copies and in about 10 mins i am usually done.

But there is this girl that always kinda look at me strange way, the way like she thinks i am a secret government spy or something.

Today after i got extension she wanted to take a photo of me, which usually never happened before, and the strange thing is that she wanted to take photo with her phone. I asked why does she need my photo since i have a photo in the passport and in the application form as well, then she said "these are the NEW rules".

During the visits we met most of the employees there in the immigration since we go there very often either for my visa or my GF visa. Other staff members are very nice and they chat, make jokes etc, but she she is totally different. To mention one time like 1 year ago , i had a pleasant chat with one monk there, and there was she, that was the first time i saw in the immigration office, she took me to the room where they work - there is not allowed to enter other than employees and she questioned me about do i work here, where do i live, what am i doing on Thailand etc.

    Back on the topic,

Did anyone had similar situation, and do you think that photo thing could be the new set of rules. I personally don't think they are, i think this girl is just trying to find something against me. Also i changed my passport recently since the old one was full, could that be the reason for all this?

  10. Just got from Penang and i need to share this story with you.

My girlfriend study biology in Hat Yai for the last 3 years or so and since we are not married and i don't have a job i stay here on tourist visas only. I entered Thailand at Jan.2012 with my first visa and so far got 6 tourist visas including last double entry one.

So after my first two months passed on double entry visa, i went to immigration to pay for 1 month extension and i got stamp admitted until: 02.APR., so at 02.APR i went to the Padang Besaar border to do visa run and everything was fine until i came to the entry Thailand check where the guy told me that my visa is not valid, i asked why and he showed me the date on my visa says enter before 1.APR. I was so confused since in immigration they gave me admitted until 2nd and now i can't enter thailand. he told me that the only thing i can do is to go and get new visa, but the things to be worse i left my cred card and all my belongings in Hat Yai since i thought this will be just a casual visa run, so i asked him is there anything he can do, but he refused it and he was very unpolite. after that i wanted to see the border crossing "boss" as they called him since maybe he can have mercy on me. I went to talk with him and he also was very unpolite and even kinda flaming and angry.

Also while looking through my previos visas i found out that the last year i had the exact same thing, th edifference was just in year, i had double visa stamped until 2nd APR 2013 and on visa said enter before; 01.APR 2013, and i entered 02.APR without any problems, got stamped..all good, but this time they making problems for some reason. Even if it is my fault noone really told me that i need to look the date on my visa and not the one that people in immigration gave me, after all isit their job to take a look at my visa entry date and never stamp more days than it says on enter before date.

    back on the story,

So i explained him that i don't have any money or clothes, papers etc with me so i need to enter Thailand just to pick my stuff so i can travel to Penang after which he let me go in basically illegally but at one condition to come back the same day since i can than cancel the exit stamp from Malaysia and get back there. Also when i showed him my previous visa from 2013 he laughed at me and told me that the officials are sleeping and not doing their job. You wont believe what kind of rush this problem gave me, since it was end of the month i my budget was almost without any help also my bike broke few days ago so i needed to fix that too, at the end i borrowed money and took another van for border. arrived there late at night, no bus, no train..only taxi. They wanted 3000b to take me to Penang, after some talk i lowered it down to 2400b. Arrived at Penang at night time, slept till morning, filed the form for 1 entry visa, and got my 7th tourist visa. I was lucky that i have recommendation letters from 2 professors from my gf faculty to show the the embassy, otherwise i think i would be doomed there. Now i guess i am going home after this visa runs out.

So yea, take care and carefully watch your dates on visas and always ask in immigration if you are unsure of something, or else you could be in some serious s**t.

  11. I just got back from Vientiane, and got my double entry visa. Before this one i had 3 entry from my country and single from KL.

So I started my journey from Hat Yai, so far away from Laos, but its the only country i havent been so far and they issue double entries visas so i headed there. I got to the southern bus station and the bus to Nong Khai is from Moo Chit, and there is a van going between them from 35 baht. I took the last bus to Nong Khai, so i got there early morning. Since i didnt get Laos visa in Bkk I couldnt take local bus between Nong Khai and VTE, they ask for passport and Laos visa(it costs 55 baht). so i took tuk tuk to the border. everything went great at the thai side. there is a bus for 20 baht that takes you ac cross the bridge. On the Laos side I applied for visa on arrival, it took around 5 min, since it was very early in the morning. when you cross the border there are lot of tuk tuks and taxis, but also there is a public bus number 14 (ticket is 6 000 kip) which takes you to the bus station and from there, everything is close. consulate was closed until 2nd so i had lot of spare time. rented a bike for one day for sight seeing, love the city. everything is so close, and lot of parks and you can walk everywhere...

on 2nd i went early morning to the consulate, on their web site there is a map with the new address. you can walk, it is really not far away from the Patuxai park, or you can go by bike if you rented or tuk tuk. I arrived around 8:30 and there was around 20 people before me.. for visas they ask for passport copy, and also they ask for copy of laos visa.. not sure why they want it, but people around me told me to copy it so i did. there is a copy center in the consulate so no need to copy it in front on consulate. when you enter they give you a number and then you wait for your number to show up... when it was my turn, i gave them all the copies and the application (download it from the web site or you can get it in the consulate, it goes faster if you already fill it). they didnt ask anything, just looked through my copies and inside my passport, and they said to go to pay in the other building.. then you wait again for your number to show up. you pay there, and the next day after 1 pm you come to pick your passport..

the next day i came earlier but it was very long line, and they opened the gate late, around 1 and 15.. they just gave me my passport back and thats it.

i was heading back the same day, so i went straight to the bus station. there is a local bus from VTE to Nong Khai at 14:30, 15:30 and 18:00, but when i got there the tickets were sold out. so i took the public bus 14, to the border, again bus just to cross the bridge for 4 000 kip, and then tuk tuk to the bus station to Nong Khai. the rates of the tuk tuk from the friendship bridge to the bus station is 30baht per person, saw it inside the tuk tuk, so we paid that much..

from there there are few types of buses that go to BKK. the cheapest one is at the bus station, on one of the stands.. and the bus is crappy. for the better ones, tickets are bought around the bus station, and the price varies. I took the medium price and the bus was ok, it took really long time to enter BKK because of the traffic but I got right on time to take another bus to Hat Yai.

    Hope this helps...
