  1. Hello, I was trying to send you a PM but apparently there is a 'fatal error' so I gave up! but here is the info I was trying to send to you -

' Hello, I don't know if you are on Facebook, but if you are, there is a great group called 'Dogs and Cats on Koh Samui' where you can post your info. I posted there before when I found a dog and she was reunited with her family within about four hours. The folks on that group are dog and cat mad and will go out of their way to help you.

    Here is the link -

    https://www.facebook.com/groups/150267135141583/529192583915701/?notif_t=group_activity

If you aren't on FB, let me know and I will post it for you if you like. But you will need to give me some sort of contact details, either email or phone.

Best of luck, I hope you find her.

  2. Morning,

I have just seen this on the Community Online Pinboard Samui FB group. https://www.facebook.com/groups/389315034467102/permalink/892773844121216/?pnref=story

"Today AGAIN another Box Jellyfish attack on Maenam Beach. Near Santiburi, man got attacked. Brought to hospital, but he is still alive luckily. So, careful everyone, make sure you wear body swim suits and have vinegar at hand. Don't think you spot the creatures easily, some are very small. Most attacks occur very near the shore."

i have certainly seen many dead jelly fish washing up on Maenam Beach over the last week but they looked like the normal large ones that we see here often at this time of year. However, this news of a box jelly sting is rather alarming - if true, who knows - but better to be safe than sorry.

    Best wishes,

    Katy

  3. Last seen between Lomprayah and Buddha Beach Bar.

She has no collar and no name as yet – she has just been adopted and is due to fly to Germany next week to begin her new life as a pampered pooch. But alas, she has done a runner…or more likely been chased away by the wild pack at the temple.

Her adoptive owners are keen for her return and are offering a reward. The poster is in Thai as well as English so please share with your Thai friends. And please contact Dog Rescue on 081 893 9443 if you have seen her.

  4. Hello, and good on you for taking care of a stray.

As previously mentioned, don't wait until she's had her first season. They will do the operation here on the island before that - around 6 months.

If her time is close, you can tell because her 'lady parts' will be quite swollen and protruding quite obviously. At this point you have about 2 weeks before she will be fertile and starts to be 'interested' in attracting male attention, so act quickly.

Dog Rescue are inundated at the moment and there is a waiting list for spaying, but they are prioritising females. There is also a small charge now (around 500 baht) if you are a farang, but still free for Thais. I think Dog Rescue do a good job here with this programme, but you do have to persevere and be patient ... and extra, extra polite .... to get the desired result.

If you don't mind paying, there are several vets, but I don't think any will collect her. The last time I had a female dog done was about 5 years ago and I think I paid about 3500 baht. (Boys are much cheaper - I just paid 3000 for my boy, including all meds and after care!)

Good luck. It's a great thing that you're doing.

  5. Not sure if this has been mentioned on here or not yet but it looks like it was the Samui bus.

My landlady has just been over and she is very upset. She knows two people who were killed in the crash. They were from Maenam. Two sisters returning from a family wedding, both died. One lady was the mother of the bride. The married couple were sitting behind them but they have survived. She doesn't have information about their injuries.

  6. Looking at the line up, I'm guessing they're trying to cover all six decades in an attempt to please everyone. And after all it's quite fitting.

JLS have been massively successful in the UK in this decade and the end of the last one, so their appearance is probably going to be a highlight for a lot of Her Majesty's younger subjects. You forgot to mention Jessie J! Who?

You've just got to get down with the kids!

Anyway, I would also like to watch it so if anyone has info please share it with us.

    Thank you.

  7. Er... anyway, at some point I think some one was asking a question about where to buy organic fruit and veg.

I can't help with the fruit and veg but I have found there is a new venture that's just started at Maenam Walking Street on Thursday nights selling 'natural, organic superfoods" .

Here is a link to their Facebook page.

As you enter from the traffic lights, the stall should be past Jomar Bar on the left and just before the Pizza place.

It's called Nature Home. I don't know any more about it than this link, but it maybe worth popping along and having a chat with them to see if they can help you.

    Good luck.

(Just noticed there's a phone number on the info page as well)

  8. Thanks everybody for your responses. It's great to see how many other special ducks there are around and the good feeling that they seem to bring.

Sadly we haven't found Duck and have to concede that it's now not looking good.

I would like to think that she was preggers and flew off but she had never seen another duck so I think it's unlikely!

Very, very sad. It's most definitely not the same without her around. She made me smile and lit up my day. We miss you Duck!!!

Such a waste of an amazing creature. :crying:

  9. I’m sure this will prompt more than a few humorous responses but I am seriously putting out a request to find a missing duck!

‘Duck’ has mysteriously disappeared from Maenam Beach 2 days ago. And I am aware that it is probably too late and she has become dinner, but it’s worth a try.

This duck is a most unique creature. She is the first ‘beach duck’ I have ever seen. She lives at Buddha Beach Bar with her owner who has reared her since she was a duckling. She is a domestic pet and has grown up with dogs and cats. She plays like a puppy. She acts like a guard dog on her patch and is fearsome when protecting ‘her’ puppies when other dogs come in from outside. She was fast becoming a legend on the beach with many people turning up to take photos of her unusual behaviour.

‘Duck’ is special and not for eating. Or that was how it was supposed to be.

So I am seriously asking if anybody has seen the strange sight of a duck being carried away on Maenam Beach 2 days ago or has noticed the arrival of a fully grown duck somewhere.. .whether she is alive or not. I would be very grateful if you could let me know. Her owner is most distressed about it and I must admit so am I. She was amazingly responsive and very, very funny. It is not the same without her.

Please don’t post that this is Thailand and ducks are food – we already know this. And we were aware that this could happen at some point. But it still worth asking the question – has anybody seen this duck?

So there go. Odd request for the day. I await the wisecracks….

    Many thanks

    Kate

  10. Black Moon party was held at Sound Bar last night instead of the normal venue, as the prince is on the island apparently, and there were concerns he would be disturbed by the noise.

Incidently, I wasn't there, I was just told by someone who was. They arrived in Plai Laem only to be redirected to Sound.

Sadly for those nearby it will return to Plai Laem next time.

I don't know what the 5am noise from a few nights this week was in Maenam, but I am down at the Lomprayah end and we can hear it! But I've found that turning the aircon on helps drown it out!

  11. Looking at the government's actions (inaction) to date I am sort of reminded of Nero fiddling while Rome burned..

    Roman contributions include;

Architectural styles : the Roman were inspired by the Greeks. But they were the ones to use extensively the arch, mosaics and frescoes. They built the largest free-standing dome in the world until the 20th century (the Pantheon in Rome, 43m of diametre, or 1m wider than the Bruneleschi's Duomo in Firenze).

Aqueducts and viaducts merit a separate category. They were the ancestors of modern viaduct (suspension bridges, etc.). Aqueducts would bring drinkable water from hundreds of kilometres away and were designed with just the right inclination so that the water would not run too fast (and erode the stone), nor too slow (and evaporate or become muddy). Combined with canalisations and sewers, they enabled a city like Rome to sustain a population of over 1 million.

The Romans developed spectator sports beyond anything seen until then. The Greeks invented the Olympic Games (incl. stadiums), but the Romans gave us the idea of mass entertainment.

The Roman highways were so straight, plane and resistant that some are still used nowadays (e.g. Via Appia). Many modern European highways follow the old Roman highways, as they used the most direct route to connect cities (and most Roman cities still exist nowadays).

Wine-making was not invented by the Romans, but they planted so many vines throughout the empire, that they created a tradition in France, south-western Germany and Mediteranean countries lasting to this day. The world's greatest wines are direct heirs to Roman wines.

The Roman weren't the first to come up with central or floor heating or hot baths, but they certainly spread its used across the empire. Ironically, it is the Japanese who are fans of hot springs and baths nowadays, not the Europeans. But famous thermal springs still exist in Europe, and were especially popular in the 19th century. Some have Roman origins.

The Roman Senate was supposedly founded by Romulus 2756 years ago. The Republic is "only" 2514 years old, but was one of the oldest such system in the world, and one that deeply influenced modern democratic states. The Greek idea of "democracy" is probably further from the current "democratic" system than was the elitist Roman Republic (in fact, politicians nowadays are almost always the same few oligarchs, like in Roman times).

The Julian Calendar, name after its inventor (Gaius Julius "Caesar"), is almost identical to the modern Western calendar reformed by Pope Gregory 1600 years later, and still used by many national Orthodox churches. It has/had all the current months, which names all have meanings in Latin : January (from "Janus", god of the beginning of times), February (from "Februa" a Roman festival), March (from "Mars", the god of war), April (from "aprire" meaning "open", referring to the blossoming of spring), May (from "Maia", goddess of the fertility), June (from "Juno", goddess of women and marriage, hence the expression "June bride"), July (from Julius Caesar himself), August (from emperor Augustus), September ("7th", as March was the 1st month at the time, and September was thus the 7th month), October ("8th"), etc.

The Romans seem to have been the ones to introduce the system of 3-course meal (starter, main dish, desert), inherited by most Western cultures. Note that in India, China, Japan, etc. there is no such tradition.

If there was a like button, Pogal, I would have liked that.. a lot! Thanks for making me laugh! And sanitation.. he forgot the sanitation....

  12. Sadly, I think Poorsucker is right. Even though you were doing nothing wrong, just being natural and friendly, it really does sound like a father protecting his daughter. Whether justified or not, it's just what Dads do. Same all over the world. But especially here, as you know how easily things can be misconstrued.

If it was just a one off, ignore it.

  13. Ah yes, now I know the style you mean. I saw quite a lot of this when I was back in UK in April. Mainly younger girls.

You can buy a hair accessory called a BumpIt, which comes in various sizes, depending how big you want your bump to be. You clip it in, and then backcomb your hair over it and voila.... you have ridiculous hair! Can't say I will be giving it a go....

  14. I too am of the Madonna era and have loved her music and reinvention for a long time. Of late, have admit... I have quite enjoyed some of Gaga's music too. She openly admits that Madonna is a strong influence on her. But maybe a little too strong?

When I first heard 'Born This Way', I thought that sounds familiar? I couldn't believe it! Uncanny resemblance to Madonna's 'Express Yourself'. Then, the internet furore commenced... even Madonna's brother came out and stated it was a copy!

Here you go, see for yourself - one of the many hash ups/ mixes on Youtube.....

  15. Lee is from Manchester, mid thirties. He used to run Cocktails Bar with Gai in Bangrak. He's very well known and popular in Maenam and this has upset a lot of people.

It's a great idea to do this fundraiser and I will definitely try to get there on Friday. But if not, I will certainly leave a donation in one of his Maenam haunts. I'm sure Barbs or Jomar would be a good bet.

Many thanks for this post, Starcandle.

  16. There is no such thing as a Multi Entry Tourist Visa.

You will have either, one entry, two entries or 3 entries.

Each entry gives 60 days and can be extended for a further 30 days at Immigration (1,900 Baht)

Ok, my mistake with the multi entry terminology. I'm living in the past! It's a Tourist triple entry.

And that's great news, Lite Beer, thank you - I didn't know I could get a 30 day extension at Immigration. That helps a lot as I'll only have to do the one visa run instead of two.

Although I don't know which option I fancy less ..... a day's visa run or fighting a battle at Samui's infamous Immigration!

  17. Hello,

I've just come back from UK .... minus my Non Imm O renewal. I applied to Hull as usual, but noticed that the forms were different and had an uneasy feeling for the first time that there would be a problem. And indeed there was.

The day after I sent off my form and passport, a lady from the Consulate rang me to say that my visa had been declined as the rules had changed. She told me that this changed in January? As I am not married to a Thai and not over 50, I am not elligible for a Non Imm O any longer.

I was given a 6 month Tourist multi entry so I have to do a visa run every 60 days now instead of 90 and renew after 6 months. Which as far as I can tell means I will have to go back to UK twice a year now to renew. Expensive!

A friend of mine is in UK at the moment and has just successfully renewed his Non Imm O at Hull. But for the first time he has had to show proof that he has a reason to be here - namely his son's birth certificate. He's not married but his child is half Thai.

It's a bit of a blow and not going to make living here any easier. But I guess that's the point! Maybe the number of Thai/Western marriages is about to increase.......
