  1. Engines are left running to keep the air going and the cab cool.

Diesels especially produce a lot of power on "tick-over" it is quite wasteful to leave the engine running

Leaving any engine on "idle" driving the air is even more so.

A standing vehicle relies entirely on the fan to cool the engine so this is just another load on the standing vehicle.

I would say that the average driver in Thailand hasn't got a clue what is or isn't an economical driving practice and just listens to myths and legends promulgated by their peers.

in fact idling for any length of time is a pretty good way to overheat, overload and generally fuc_k up your engine

Oil companies make all sorts of claims about damage to engines on start-up - it helps sell oil - the logic is that the surfaces have less lubrication after standing for some time and the cool oil is circulated less quickly - but how much this really affects the engine? well i wouldn't trust an oil company to give a straight answer - they can't even tell you how much they've spilt without massaging the figures.

  2. The requirement syphilis testing was introduced because of the high incidence of infection in the migrant labour force from neighbouring countries, primarily Cambodia & Myanmar both of which have experienced a big increase in transmission, so Lopburi is right. If you don't want to believe it, that's fine. You can look up your own sources.

This is exactly what the doctor who tested me at Sukhumvit Hospital told me.

    ...and this is palpable nonsense.

  3. Why all the concern over having to get a Syphilis test for a work permit.

Are you scared of needles or possibly the results. The cost should not be of no concern.

Do you really not understand the concerns about irrational requirements by a foreign govt on people trying to work in that country?

How can you say they are irrational requirements.

Many (most in fact) countries have requirements for a medical exams to confirm that an applicant has no communicable deceases for visas that allow you to work and/or stay for a period of time.

Irrational - why single out Syph 3?

  4. "And as for the Enlish needing Scottish water? another Scottish myth,we have been using our own water for Centuries." - not true

I think you need to think about the future....2 centuries have seen a lot of change.....get up to speed

Water is the oil of the future.

    PS - who's "WE"?

We in this instance are: English people,I thought that was clear enough.

Water management is not a major problem in England,(most of which was sorted out many years ago) as regards to consumption of Potable water supplies. As I have already stated the odd short term draught in particular hot summers,in certain areas, is a minor hiccup, and hardly life threatening or worth spending Billions on,and as for pumping it down from Scotland, when there is many other nearer possibilities (such as Wales the Pennines) and cheaper options,is frankly farcical!

And please don't tag on your reply on to the end of my quote! as in: - not true

    rubbish!

  5. Several nonsense posts removed. Although reason is open to question the fact is other countries are experiencing an increase and it is highly contagious in early stages, which is what the new check is for, and it is treatable so probably a good thing all around.

I think you should state your sources - don't you?

  6. Faeces and pee. Even when you can't see or smell it you can test any piece of land and on it you'll find harmful bacteria, viruses and parasites that are the let overs of dog and "pet" waste.

Your house and garden can be literally smeared with an invisible layer of danger - on the lawn, in the soil or in your water supply.

This is also a problem in public places where people put young kids to play on the grass or ground and their hands come into contact with this "invisible" stuff. ........then they put their hands in their mouths...

Bacteria can cause cramps, diarrhoea, intestinal illness, and serious kidney disorders in humans, and of course the stuff is washed down drains and flushes untreated into the sea.

Dog faeces and urine are yet another threat to our fresh water supply.

Unlooked after dogs are a threat to your pets as well as yourself - "The eggs of roundworms and other parasites can linger in your soil for years. Anyone who comes into contact with that soil—be it through gardening, playing sports, walking barefoot or any other means—runs the risk of coming into contact with those eggs; especially your dog. "

Not forgetting the beaches in Thailand with many dogs that defecate etc. Full list of dog to human disease transmission at: http://www.gopetsame...noses_dogs.aspx

One is Gnathostoma spinigerum. Most human infections occur in Thailand and other Asian countries. The larvae may cause eosinophilic meningitis.

That's it, I'm convinced! I'm going into full lock-down mode here. Already ordered myself a biohazard suit online, in case I ever have to venture outside again. Thanks guys for making me aware of the microbiological inferno that is my neighborhood!

    Very well said!

it would seem that some posters are unable to draw inferences or make rational risk assessments.

  7. I think some people seriously need to review their preconceptions about Scotland.

Population about 1 tenth of England in an area about 60% of England.

Still large areas that could be developed differently (e.g. grouse moors0 and an educated population with some hugely valuable industries and resources (e.g. WATER and whiskey).

Folium - do your research - i'm not going to spoon-feed you I won't waste time like that - come back when you know what you're talking about

  8. never mind oil - WATER wil be an important export.

Would that be 'Scottish Mineral Water'....of the single malt type wink.png

scotland apart form the enormous Whiskey industry will supply England with water for human consumption and industry.

So why would England start buying water from Scotland, when we have enough of our own?

England doesn't it already imports water.

As there is no water grid in the UK (and unlikely ever to be due to the enormous cost plus requirement for vast reservoirs in the SE), not sure how Scotland would plan to shift water to England. A better bet would be transfers from the Pennines or Wales if deemed necessary. So England won't be needing any Scottish water, thank you.

Re the brown, peaty water Scottish whisky is not even majority Scottish owned. Diageo (who have just bought Whyte and Mackay from the bankrupt Indian Kingfisher group) is a London based, British firm and Pernot Ricard are based in Paris for heaven's sake. Between them they own over 60% of Scottish whisky production, Scottish based companies (predominantly Edrington Group and W.Grants) own less than a third, with assorted European, Japanese and US companies making up the rest.

it's rather like telling a proud Irishman that Guinness is owned by the Brits and that the song "Danny Boy" was written by an Englishman....! Truth hurts.

Utterly wrong from the start.....go and do your research.

I'd say just about everything you say is incorrect.

  10. Can anyone say WHY they have decided to include a test for tertiary syphilis?

It seems to be a relatively rare disease so why was it singled out?

    Read the post above yours.

    I did - it doesn't explain WHY.

as far as I can see there is no scientific merit but there may be some other more xenophobic reasons.

"THese diseases come from foragers" - are foreigners working in ?Thailand a significant threat with regards to tertiary syphilis?

..........why not test the Thai population?

  11. If Scotland wants to be in the EU, it will be - no problems (traditionally Scotland's always had stronger ties with Europe - France in particular. ....England however is another matter -they may vote themselves out .........som nam naa!

One thing that needs to be remembered, some member States are already in extreme financial difficulties i.e Bankrupt, such as Ireland,Greece,Italy, and Spain, several others are heading in that direction,it would be well to realise the EU owes support to their present members, before taking on yet more financially stretched new members, with expectations of funding and expecting a EU welcome with arms outstretched would be somewhat unrealistic.

IMO I wouldn't expect the Bankrupt nations to be voting for a large monetary welcome pack for Scotland either.

it may have escaped your notice but Scotland is already in the EU and if they (Scotland) are financially strapped.........who's supporting them?

It may have escaped your notice, but should there be a Yes Referendum vote, then Scotland will no longer be a member of the EU,and will need to apply for entry to the EU,in it's own right!

    don't jump to conclusions.

Following that logic England would be out too

  13. We all get a tummy bug from time to time. there is a misconception amongst most that it was "the last thing they ate"

In fact many cases of upset stomach (and other illnesses) are contracted by our own hand to mouth contact (smokers note this) - You see people happily petting soi dogs and than a few minutes later are eating some street food in their hand......and then they have the temerity to blame the poor vendor for their bad stomach.

I can't, for the life of me, find any studies that prove or even suggest a widespread connection between stray dogs and human gastrointestinal infections in Thailand, Asia or anywhere else. I would bet that there's considerably more science supporting the notion that poor food-storage, handling and hygiene practices are a problem.

That being said, I do wash my hands before meals, a habit I acquired since childhood. There are hundreds of surfaces which, especially in a climate such as ours, make excellent breeding grounds for bacteria and other pathogens. I'm sure the pelt of a shaggy mutt is on par with most of these. But I see no cause to single out soi dogs as the source of all tummy aches.

    FGS - who's singling out?????

You might also consider that contact with hair is a great way to infect - especially under finger nails....bite your finger-nails?

If you really believe that Google is your gateway to knowledge then at least think for a proper search and try "hand to mouth" transmission of bacteria.....
