  1. A lot of comments about a miserable Thai education system.

But ask a typical high school senior in the USA "who was Hitler?" and then note the response... heck, ask 100 of them...

You'll be surprised. Well, maybe some of you won't be...

Have you ever seen the Jay Leno stuff asking people about 2nd Grade level knowledge , One woman, he pointed to the Stars and Stripes, and asked her "How many Stars?"'

"How can I tell when it is blowing about" was her answer.

    Ignorance can be quite universal

  2. As a Blitz Survivor and visitor to Belsen shortly after the war, and to Oradour sur Glane. where I openly wept,.I am called a "sick old man", for reminding people about the

most murderous phase in the history of homo sapiens..never too sure about the sapiens.

Hitler said the Third Reich would live for a Thousand Years, well it lasted for twelve, but the memory of it will last for a Thousand Years.

  3. End of Story....until next time ?

    latest email

"Thanks for trying but I managed to get one of her bank accounts activated from this end.

She was semi hysterical but has since calmed down, I was concerned re her state of mind at the time which is not surprising given all she's been through in past nine months.

    Thanks again for trying"

  4. Latest..I have called her as the guy gave me her number....no pickup. Have advised him ref WU

Be assured .I am "not at home" as Victorian ladies used to say.

I also believe it is too elaborate, and please be assured it is no troll.

There are sufficient similar tales on TV that make trolls superfluous.

  5. Catching up...the quote is from Homepro, Also the increase in floor level is no biggie, only one door to trim a few mm.

I think I'l try to lay a few myself on top where I can live with if no good.

  6. As her bank accounts are in limbo, I am unable to assist & can do nothing from here – My phone bill is going through the roof.

    What about Western Union?

No need for a bank account and instant money.

Good Thinking Batman..saves me a lot of excuses TVM

  7. After Ugrading a drive to Windows 7 I could not use my existing modem, so went to Silom branch simply to ask "What do I need to do?"

Hordes of people, waited a long time and was told I needed to buy a new modem about 2000 baht.

Decided to go to pantip via Central World. Asked a guy at a kiosk in CW. he said I can exchange for free at Siam Square branch

Being unbelieving I went there to ask and find out what I would need to bring.

I supplied my phone number and passport and within 5 minutes marched out with a new modem FREE

  8. I would think it a scam. How much bad luck can one girl have. Just emotional support eh? If you call she will hit you with the sob story, crying and begging and will hope to tug at your heartstrings to cave in. I'm sure the girl is getting emotional support from the person that sent you the message, why would she need another farang for support. Surely she'd prefer Thai support.

I wouldn't go near it with a barge pole.

I have known the guy for quite a few years he is in the police in the UK, comes her 3-4 times per year brings me all kinds of goodies.

There is a history of these "events"

  9. 100-120 baht per sq metre and you buy all materails. Maybe slightly higher in Bangkok, as for days needed would depend on how big the job was, is the floor new is it clear do other tiles have to be removed.. are there many obstacles to cut around, are steps involved the list goes on, but the figure of 100-120 is based on new floor and open area.

Hope this helps as a guidline.

Estimator arrived First I asked if new tiles could be laid on old, without a glance was told NO. Websearches on DIY say can be OK. My existimg floor is very good just want to change colour.

The quote for 40 m^2 labour only 24,5000 baht by sms. I paid 500 baht for the quote, no indication of material for sticking etc..I know I can calculate tile costs,

    Warrranty 6 months.

  10. Yes Litte I can do,IS a lawyer likely take this on with payment when the said monies are unfrozen..I'm not financing anything

Whatdoes "fai" mean please ? Also I guess a farang getting "involved" will lever up prices.

  11. This is a follow up to a recent event, partially described in the email. My first reaction is that it is a case for a lawyer. It does however seem inconistent in places.

I would appreciate some useful input

    "Hi John

I’m looking to see if you can possibly help me.

Firstly I will state that I am not looking for any financial help from you, only moral support & any assistance you may be able to give My Girlfriend, Fai as she has gotten herself in a spot of trouble.

Her family was killed by an ex-boyfriend of her mother’s & when he was sent to prison, the killer’s brother then killed her last remaining brother & the killer’s brother is also in prison.

Fai sold a house & plot of land & the money was placed in a bank account until the land transfers were complete.

Whilst this was happening, her best friend, Ka San (whose parents died when Ka San was a child & was taken in by Fai’s parents - Fai & Ka San were raised as sisters) went into labour & was taken to Kanchanaburi and Fai went to the hospital with her as her husband was away working. After a 3 day labour, Ka San gave birth to a daughter & then died from total exhaustion – The hospital called the police as Ka San’s husband could not be contacted & the hospital wanted their bill paid & as Fai came to the hospital with Ka san, they held her liable for the bill & had Fai arrested.

I got this sorted out by sending Fai some money but as she had been arrested the police had her bank accounts frozen but they were later released. As a result of the bank account having been frozen it was going to take her a further 10 to 14 days to have access to the cash in the account.

Fai has since packed up & moved from Sangklaburi (her home) & is now staying (with the baby as the father has done a runner) with a friend in Bangkok until she can get access to the money in the bank account to buy a condominium in Bangkok (she has 3 million Baht in the account).

Yesterday Fai returned to Sangklaburi to collect the remainder of her belongings & pets and brought Ka San’s car with her. During her visit to Sangklaburi, Fai lost her purse containing her ID card, ATM & bank cards & has been in contact with the banks to get new cards but the funds in her account are temporarily frozen again until new cards or accounts can be organised, Monday was the time scale given to her.

On returning to Bangkok, Fay was involved in a car accident & had to go to a medical clinic for minor injuries to herself & the baby (bruising & pain) but nothing serious.

Fai has to see the police in Bangkok tomorrow (Thursday 22nd) but she has no driving licence. The other driver was uninjured & told Fai how much he wanted to fix his car but as her bank accounts are in limbo until next week she is unable to pay him – Her ID card is also lost but as far as I can ascertain, was reported to police.

As her bank accounts are in limbo, I am unable to assist & can do nothing from here – My phone bill is going through the roof.

Is there any chance you could ring her & give moral support – any assistance would be greatly appreciated by me.

She is not a local to Bangkok & is terrified and a bit hysterical; I can only talk to her but I don’t know the ins & outs about how to help her.

I state again that I am not looking for any financial help from you, only moral support & any assistance you may be able to give as she currently has no ID & states no one believes her about the money in her account – She is terrified that she will be sent to prison & separated from the baby which is after all, family."

  12. One of my very gratifying acts was on a trip to Cambodia with some Thais, we went to some open border where I was assured no documentation was necessary. It was over 20 years ago.

I was not allowed over, and wandered around awaiting their return. There were a few open tin shed structures, and I invited a pair of children to get some food.

Within 5 minutes there were at least 40 "pairs", sad, very sad was that they had paired up depending on their disabilities, probably mines, where one was able to assist the other.

The only food on offer was noodles, and they were sweating buckets trying to eat all that could be provided. I bought a beer while I waited until they were full.

The bill was a staggering 123 Baht

I don't see a great deal of compassion here, on a bus once from Pattya, a ragged man got on and imi the conductor and nearby passengers insisted he get off, he was smelly. I paid his fare so he could remain but where was the Buddhist compassion ? While providing regular meals for a guy living in a hovel, I also gave him Chilli sauce and other condiments, after a few days they were gone, the locals had taken them.

  13. Wow no toothpaste he was dentally challenged but YES a 13 baht ice cream

so end of story I guess.

I never give money to beggars unless they are not begging, so I guess they are not beggars but lifes unfortunates,e.g. amputees,

Tend to get food for the children and babies..breaks my heart to see them. Tried to interest the police a few times for particularly heart wrenching sights, I don;t have to ask anyone to guess their reactions

  14. Well the Indian guy (Sakesh Raxena ?) stalled extradition from Canada to here for over TEN years, and a Malyasian set a UK record for extradition from the UK..another banker again over 10 years.

Both lived in splendour while on bail. Saxena now ??? been here a few years awaiting trial.

Perhaps Mr, Pitbull can do the same. If he did stab a guy, why would anyone with his abilities carry a knife....great defence for his lawyer .

  15. For me Khun Keree Kanjanpapas of Thanayong should be knighted or whatever they do here. I can't get a tile put down without a run around

The Skytrain to me is the greatest thing ever happened here. Travel outside the MRT/BTS areas and see how appallingly the traffic is choked.

Of course it will take forever to buy extra cars, in the meantime I suggest double the prices on the Sukhumvit Line inwards

The newbies travelling from Bearing etc will probably learn to wait until passengers alight before battling on, and those standing in the doorways will step off for a minute to allow others to alight.

It is possible see the travellers at Siam lined up like the Grenadier Guards.

  16. Not only that, but Manila is a dump. I had been to the backpackers area there 20 years ago and was shocked when I went there 2 years ago. Talk about run-down ! Every street vendor looked quite desperate, and restaurants only sell junk food.

Go to Singapore.....it's still reasonably cheap near Little India, and clean too. Actually, Little India is quite vibrant at night. Great food too.

The Air Asia return flight there is not much more expensive than Kuala Lumpur (which is not so hot either).

    Or try Vientiane.

Agree about Singapore but I would recommend the Geyland district instead for a little nite "colour." :whistling:

I used to get regular visas there and always provided a letter, composed by myself and stating that Company XYZ needed my expertise.

One day I went to the embassy ? and found I had lost my letter, as I was presenting my application for the O visa.

Very crestfallen I told the guy I would return another day, ( I would print a new one)

Very surprisingly he gave me a plain sheet and said "Just write it here"..which I happily did.

He was not looking for a bung either.

    Maybe I dreamt it !

Must agree the whole place is going backwards, there is a BBC documentary now about the millions who still live in slums.

The Marcos billions are still in the courts after 23 years of wrangling.

  17. Can anyone please recommend a reliable floor tiler (bangkok), and if possible give a ball park figure for labour per square metre. and the number of days needed ?

    Thank you in advance.

  18. While d/l videos for various topics, in particular Photoshop, I noticed a mean viewing of about 2000, for stuff like swapping faces etc.One tutorial had 3,500,000 views. It was for "removing clothes"B4 anyone rushes to get the prog, it does not do it so well.
