Foreign media BASED in Thailand? That’s who it says it is for.

The apparent source actually says in its English version: "all Thai media outlets"

The term: "Thai-based media" is how Khun Cod Satrusayang of Thai Enquirer interpreted this statement.

The Thai Enquirer article also states, "foreign media  . . .  seemingly had their request to attend denied" and "foreign outlets as well as press" . . . were disinvited."

"Foreign media BASED in Thailand" could be one way of understanding the Khun Satrusayang (of Thai Enquirer) interpretation.

But that is not what the announcement said. It might not be so clear to accept that the original announcement "all Thai media outlets" to be equated to include "Foreign media BASED in Thailand."

One reason for this would be that the word "outlet" when used with "media" commonly refers to local radio or television stations. Another would be that the announcement clearly stated "Thai media outlets" as opposed to the Thai Enquirer stating "foreign outlets . . . were disinvited."

    russian-embassy-facebook.jpeg?resize=696

Irrespective to all that, the announcement appeared to be an invitation by the embassy (. . . honor to invite you . . .) with a pre-requisite to register ( . . . send copies of your media id . . .) in advance. Registering in advance at a Government office usually means that a confirmation of the registration being accepted is a prerequisite. The press briefing did not appear to be an open house event for all media based in Thailand, but to just Thai media outlets that the embassy could accommodate.

  2. The form's date field says mm/dd/yyyy - the 1st example below is mm/dd/yyyy (09/20/2013), and the 2nd example is mm/dd/yyyy (01/19/2014). I expect the programmer has made an error in the instructions. My experience in Thailand is that they use the date format dd/mm/yyyy - so try using this style instead.

Also, for the Middle Name, try not leaving it blank - put in a dash symbol ( - ).

I want to know if drinking alcohol in restaurants is applied to just dark red or red zones or is it a national ban regardless?

It appears the following is in force:

No changes to Orange and Red Zones since this: Thailand expands lockdown in 29 dark-red zone provinces from 3-31 August 2021

Orange: Restaurants and eateries are allowed to open per normal hours, and offer dine-in services without the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages.

Red: Restaurants and eateries are allowed to offer dine-in services up until 23.00 Hrs., without the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages.

Change for Dark Red Zone : Thailand eases COVID-19 restrictions from 1 September 2021

Dark Red: Restaurants and eateries, including those inside shopping malls or similar venues, are allowed to resume dine-in services up until 20.00 Hrs. without the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages. Seating for dine-in customers shall be limited at 50% for air-conditioned restaurants and at 75% for the open-air ones.

  4. According to a Doctor at the Red Cross blood donation center in downtown Bangkok (from a couple of weeks ago):

Under 60 : Not more often than once in 3 months.
60 to 65 : Not more often than once in 4 months.
65 to 70 : Not more often than once in 6 months.
Over 70 : Not accepted at present.

I'm a bit lost with your post, if your suggesting that PR holders who are O/S Thailand and their re-entry date has finished now need to get another visa to be able to enter (but ultimately don't lose their PR) I don't believe that's true.

Not accepting an expired visa & insisting on a new visa was the case up until late last year. It appears to have changed recently. Checking the Thai Embassy website shows that a line has been added in entry information pages, such as, the requirements for application still say:

    - Valid visa / valid re-entry

But elsewhere on another page this clarification has been added in red:

    * Must have a valid certificate (Non-Quota visa) or a re-entry visa expired not earlier than 26 March 2020

    4 hours ago, scorecard said:

That's not quite true. I applied for a COE mentioning that I hold Permanent Residency and my re-entry stamp was expiring.

It is good to have the update that Embassies are now working in line with Immigration policies. This was not the case at some embassies during late last year, so it seems that more (or perhaps all) Embassies have now been updated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to work in line with the Immigration rule amendments.

  6. Though this is good news for those Thai Permanent Residents still stuck outside Thailand, there is an important catch in all this.

On returning to Thailand, Immigration at the airport will recognize your re-entry visa (which expired after 26 March 2020) as being valid for entry, and for non-loss of Permanent Residence status.

The catch is that, when applying for a COE at a Thai embassy, the embassy most probably will not accept the expired re-entry Non-Quota Immigrant Visa as a valid visa for entry, and force you to apply for a Non-Immigrant O visa based on your work permit. This appears to be because Immigration and the Foreign Ministry have not updated each other, as COE application criteria state a "valid visa" as one of its requirements.

The fact that you are forced to get this visa means you must apply for this visa in your home country, or in a country you have legal residence (essentially meaning one in which you are not a tourist/visitor).

The danger of this procedure is that , on arrival in Thailand, if the immigration officer at the point of entry is unaware of what has happened, it is possible that your entry details might reflect you entered on the new Non-Immigrant O visa. If that happens, you will lose your Permanent Residency.

It is very important for returning Permanent Residents who are in this situation to bring to the attention of a senior entry-point Immigration officer that you want to enter the country on the expired (but still accepted) Non-Quota Immigrant re-entry visa - and NOT the new (but de facto unnecessary) Non-Immigrant O visa.

It would also be prudent to ask the senior entry-point immigration officer to write a small hand written note below the 1 year extension stamp in the Certificate of Residence book stating that entry was allowed under COVID exemptions.

The Thai government has launched a scheme called Shop Dee Mee Khuen whereby individuals can claim a personal income tax deduction up to the maximum of THB 30,000 by keeping tax receipts between October 23 and December 31, 2020.

    Quote

In order to take advantage of this THB 30,000 PIT reduction you must get an official tax invoice or receipt from the product/service provider with your name, tax ID number and address (Note that Thai nationals have an ID card number that doubles as their tax ID), and keep the receipt for filing with your annual PIT submission.

  8. On the first night (Friday), from opening time till about 8pm, the tent on the beach had only lime soda stored and sold from a large cooler box, while beer (draft only) was stored and poured into plastic glasses from the top of the wall of a private property bordering the beach just behind the tent. The reason given for this was that it was not permitted to sell alcohol on the beach. After about 8pm, an associated (slightly cheaper) brand of  beer "appeared" in the cooler box under the tent and was being sold from there.

About 8pm or a little before was also the time that security checking at the entrance was no longer as strict. This is common each year, as not long after the official opening ceremony (usually between 6 to 7pm) "officials" present for the opening leave.

On the second night (Saturday), in addition to the apparently legal "on the wall" sale, beer cans (two associated brands) were stored and sold from the large cooler box under the tent from opening time (around 5pm or earlier).

  9. Schedule from the Huahin Jazz Festival's facebook page

    Interesting jazz performances might include:

    Friday:

18:45 - Koh Saxman featuring Keithen Carter (vocals)

19:50 - Chai Blues feat. Nurse (vocals)

20:50 - Jazz All Stars feat. Steve Canon (trumpet) & Frank Herrgott (keyboards)

    Saturday:

17:50 Mimi Quintette (Thailand based Japanese musicians) feat. Mimi (vocals)

19:30 Koh Saxman & the Takeshi Band

20:20 Julian Carey (vocals & instrumentalist) & Sunny (keyboards)

The alternative stage has always had vibrant energetic jazz - best visited when the Pop/R&B/Funk Disco bands are on the main stage. (at the end of Soi 61 before going down to the beach).

You can apply for your visa 3months in advance.

You can enter any time between valid from date to valid until date.

Once you have booked your flight and ASQ you then apply for your Certificate of Entry.

If you change your flight after receiving the CoE you  have to change your ASQ booking and apply for a new CoE.

I can confirm the above - partially. The non-O visa is valid for 3 months, - entry is not restricted to a particular date. Only the CoE is restricted to a fixed date.

However I believe embassies are only issuing visas when you also show your intention of applying for a CoE. This means that to apply your non-O visa, you have to have all your CoE papers ready and submit them at the same time - meaning the CoE application form, all other proof required, insurance and ASQ and a flight booking (does not have to be paid for yet), usually from some random date a few months in advance of the actual flight. Then your non-O visa will be issued, but not your CoE, because that is only given when you have a paid for flight ticket. The CoE is not issued along with the visa. Some high risk countries also only issue the CoE on proof of a negative Covid test (the embassy will inform you of this procedure).

The embassy issuing the visa will not be delayed to suit the departure date, as long as the booking is within the 3 months validity of the visa. It will be issued within those 15 days; actually likely within a few days if the papers are in order. So a January booking for an application done in November should not be a problem.

Additional note: I should add that, should you change your departure schedule from the dates you put in your CoE application you used for applying for your visa, all you have to do is submit a new CoE application with a new ASQ & reservation - but there is a slight catch here. You will have to extend your insurance for the full year from the month of departure. The new CoE change is quite straightforward and there are no fees or complications in that process (to change the date).

  11. Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs youtube page has an approximately 15 minute presentation 3 times a week (usually Mon/Wed/Fri) in English giving an update on the recent news, pronouncements, rules and procedures. It is quite informative and the presenter is excellent. This information usually starts some minutes into the videos. The most recent one: Covid 19 Daily Briefing July 3, 2020 - The next one will be on Thursday 9 July (because of the long weekend).

Here is a video of Thailand's Ambassador to Singapore from 29 June giving in clear and precise detail (in English) the procedure in Singapore for non-Thai nationals to get back to Thailand from Singapore. Forward the video to about the 10:50 minute mark.

The full procedure and document forms that need to be filled out are at the bottom of this embassy page.

Insurance that covers COVID-19 and will be accepted for entering Thailand under the present rules is available from some Thai insurance companies. The cost is in the range of US$1,800 (depending on your age) for one year's coverage. If you contact a local Thai insurance broker (cheaper than going direct to an insurance company), they should be able to give you some choices. Here is an example of one that will be accepted. It is named: Visa Friendly - this is not an endorsement - just an example that it is available.

Other informative websites with useful information:
Ministry of Foreign Affairs - Press Release information on relevant updates (English)

Thai Government's Public Relations Facebook page (English)

Ministry of Public Health, Department of Disease Control, COVID-19 forms required when returning to Thailand (English)
Alternate State Quarantine (ASQ) Hotels (in Thai)

My understanding (through personal experience) of the "Certificate of Residence."

The "Certificate of Residence" is the (official) name of the document issued when you are granted Permanent Residency. Immigration in Thailand also refer to it as a "Residence Permit". It does not have to be renewed once you are in the country. However, it must be renewed if you are planning to leave the country and you wish to retain Permanent Residency, as your re-entry visa is only given up to the date of renewal of the Certificate of Residency. Each renewal is for one year.

If you leave the country, you need a "Non-Quota Immigrant Visa" to re-enter Thailand. It is in effect a re-entry visa, and it expires on the same date as the Certificate of Residence expires.

Getting a Certificate of Residence takes quite some time and costs in excess of B200,000. There are restrictions on how many people of a given nationality are granted residency (some say 100 per nationality). The Immigration Bureau's webpage on residency is here.

  12. It appears the Supreme court rejected the appeal of the Appeal Court's ruling and the final verdict was given by the Civil Court back around November 2015. Thus payment was probably due a little under 4 years ago.

    Quote

Court orders Praewa's parents to pay 30 mln baht compensation for fatal car incident in 2010

By webfact, November 26, 2015 year.

    . . .

Earlier The Appeals Court sentenced her to two years in prison for reckless driving that caused nine people dead when a taxi van fell from the expressway after it was rammed by her car almost five years ago.

She appealed to the Supreme Court. But her appeal was rejected.

The Supreme Court said in its statement there was no significant evidence to reverse the ruling on August 2012 by the Central Juvenile and Family Court that sentenced her to three years in prison but commuted by one third to two years in prison.

The juvenile court granted three-year probation for her prison term, and mandated her to three year behaviour control, 48 hours of working to caring road accident patients, and report authorities every three months.

She was also banned from driving until she is 25-year-old.

It seems like payment was made 9 years after the incident, and 4 years after the final ruling, once the new threat arose in late July 2019 of land being seized by the Legal Execution Department after Aug 28 2019 for auction .

    Quote

Compensation coming next week, Praewa’s family tells victims

Earlier on Tuesday, Justice Minister Somsak Thepsuthin, meeting a Thammasat University legal team aiding the victims, urged Praewa and her family to quickly sell their land and pay the compensation.

If they did not, he warned, the Legal Execution Department would seize the land on August 28 and put it up for auction.

  14. The festival has been moved from end May to early June 2019.

Surprising how little information on the festival that is just 3 weeks away.

The website that has a reasonably comprehensive listings is G Hua Hin Resort & Mall

It is mostly in Thai, and has a full program listing of timings and artists & includes a good 3 minute promo video of the festival in Thai.

The most interesting acts (in my personal opinion) appear to be:

    Friday 7th June

    • Amsterdam Jazz Bigband - New York Round Midnight feat.Izaline Calister, Deborah Brown (Netherlands) at 7pm
    • The Waltz, Frank Herrgott Feat. Richard Jackson , Rubem Fairias at 9:20pm

    Saturday 8th June

    • The KING Of Samba (Brazil) feat Rubem Farias & Filo’ Machado / Brazilian Jazz playing at 7pm.
    • Beets Brother Jazz Band feat. Deborah Brown at 8pm

A post is on the Hua Hin/Cha-Am Forum on 4 April: Hua Hin International Jazz Festival 2019 at Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin from 7-8 June 2019 without much more than a simple poster of the event.

Another website that has some mention of who will perform: https://www.thaichacha.com/social/event/hua-hin-international-jazz-festival-2019

    Quote

Look forward to over 50 diverse jazz performances on full display each day, from over 100 of the most interesting jazz stars and award-winning artists from around the globe; namely The Beets Brothers from Netherlands, The Shanghai Sisters from Malaysia, Leonid Ptashka from Isarael, Mezzoforte from Iceland, and The Waltz

All the while, Thai-national and local artists including the regular Koh Mr. Saxman, ETC, The Sound of Siam and many others will also join the highly-anticipated event to make it a true musical phenomenon of the year.

For an event jointly promoted by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (as mentioned in the above website) - there is no mention on their website: https://www.tourismthailand.org/Events-and-Festivals/Search

Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin mentions the following:

Centara links to a facebook Events post that has a slightly different lineup:

Neekrung Connects (seems to be a design company) is shown as a sponsor but their webpage does not appear to have any info or links.

Hubster Company seems to be the marketer that has a couple of posters in Thai showing Koh Saxman performing.

This jazzfestivalhuahin facebook page just has one poster showing the festival being on Friday/Saturday 7/8 June 2019

This one still has last year's details: https://www.huahininterjazz.com/

This page is almost dead: http://www.thehuahinjazzfestival.com/

  15. Forum members should not give drivers causing traffic collisions such a hard time when they blame the incident on - "brake failure."

Perhaps the drivers really do mean something on the line of - "the brake failed to stop the vehicle in time."

Thus it really is a "failure" of the brake to stop the vehicle.

What the drivers perhaps have neglected mentioning, might be on the line of - "I didn't press that failing brake in time."

  16. Have a Ford Fiesta bought under the 100,000 excise kickback scheme in mid 2013.
Within the first month, complained strongly that the gear change was acting strange.
They had me test drive another brand new one that had the same problem.
Said it was just the way the gear was, so nothing wrong. Wasn't much I could no.

Though all low speed gear changes were jerky with a loss of power ( more so on an uphill incline), was lucky to never faced any “terrible” problems.

Late last year, got a letter from the Ford dealer saying they would replace the gear/transmission free of charge if there was any problem.

Early this year, took the car back and got the gear/transmission "changed" for free along with an additional 7 year warranty in case same problem reoccurs, valid till 2025. The "written off" cost shown on the invoice was for about B17,000.

The problem seemed solved for about 6 months, but it's slowly restarting.

Perhaps time soon for that "required frequent maintenance and software adjustment" !!!

  17. I believe this excellent record shop still exists (not far - but not walking distance) from the Saphan Kwai BTS.

    Bangkok HiFi

Thanon Padhiphad between soi 12/14 - behind the coffee shop.

    081 875 5888

They can and will do it professionally. I believe their charge is under 500 B. The default conversion will be to "wav" format.

You will need to decide if you want one big file of the whole LP - or if you want the tracks split into individual music files.

The correct way to do this is to have one big .wav file - with the necessary information of track splitting in a .cue file.

Total .wav file size(s) will be less than 600 KB.

I am sure for a very little more charge, they can provide additional conversions.

I suggest you to ask them to make these 3 file conversions as well - of the split individual tracks:

    1. ".mp3" at 320kbps - high quality mp3 (< 130 KB) for listening from your laptop
    2. ".mp3" at 192kbps - for listening on your phone through earphones (< 80 KB)
    3. ".flac" format if you use Microsoft OR "alac" format if you Apple - this is lossless & half the size (< 300 KB) of a wav and easier to store.

Option 3 is not so important.

  18. This appears to be the computer you bought: ASUS FX553VD - Laptops - ASUS Global

This laptop allows for dual hard drives. The laptop appears to have one 5400RPM 1TB SSH drive & one 8GB SDRAM chip.

It is unlikely your problems of slowness are due to a faulty hard drive. ASUS may or may not have changed the drive, but it is still highly unlikely this is the problem. The hard drive running at 100% is more likely a software issue. Besides that, Windows 10 is not an operating system built for efficiency, and a 5,400RPM drive does not help.

If you want a clue as to what keeping the hard drive so busy, download, install, and run Process Explorer from microsoft.

Suggestion: Find a laptop repair shop you are comfortable dealing with. From that shop, buy a minimum 250GB SSD sized Drive & an additional 8GB SDRAM.

    Ask the shop to:

    • Upgrade your memory from 8GB to 16GB by installing the new 8GB SDRAM.
    • Install the new SSD drive and move the Windows operating system to that new drive.
    • Set up the pre-installed 1TB drive for data storage ( Example drive D: and E: ).
    • Remove any pre-installed 3rd party Antivirus program.
    • Update Windows 10 repeatedly till up to date (you'll have to leave the laptop there overnight for them to do this)
    • Install a free Antivirus of your choice (or stick with Windows Defender only, though this is not recommended)

Since you are still using the original Hard Drive provided by ASUS, this does not void your warranty for the hard drive. Neither does adding memory or a new SSD drive void the warranty for the laptop.

It's a PITA when a new laptop misbehaves. Best of luck.

  19. A shop in Pantip Plaza (The Computer City center) on Phetchaburi road converts Beta & VHS video cassettes to DVD & VCD - so you might have some luck there.

Up the smaller escalator (left side) to - it's either the 2nd or 3rd floor.

It's one of the small shops with its back to the escalator. I believe there are 4 shops; it's one of the two center ones.

The shop is often closed with a mobile number on the door. Call and set up a time to meet.

I remember it as being very reasonably priced, there was no need to bargain.

Do let us know if they can do it, and if they did it well. Check the result in the shop before leaving, and if it seems glitchy, they will do it again. smile.png

  20. Anyone know if "Black" on Soi 33 is still on hiatus?

Black had to move from its previous location on Sukhumvit 33 and it is said they are looking for a new place to set up, and that hopefully it will reopen after mid 2014.

Meanwhile, Bangkok Betty on the ground floor within the new Holiday Inn at the top of Sukhumvit 22 has blues many nights of the week (presently Wed through Sat). The atmosphere can get quite lively, which it should at the price of drinks and food. One cannot complain though, as the decor, quality, service, and live music at this upmarket venue are all first rate.

"Koh Mr. Saxman" is behind Jazz Sushi, a Thai improvisation on this popular Japanese fare. On the ground floor of Sax Society on Silom Soi 19, it's open daily except Monday. The decor, it is said,

... bears the hallmark of a 1950s-style jazz club with dark-painted walls designed like picture frames. The "frames" are made of white-painted bricks and showcase photographs of jazz musicians, among them His Majesty the King. - "It's a raw look that epitomises that era," says Koh.

Though I haven't visited yet, I believe big showtime is on the weekends (Fri/Sat/Sun) from 8pm to 10pm, and there might be a cover charge (around B200). Other days, jazz students from upstairs are on hand to entertain. If it's jazz you want with your sushi fusion, this must be the place.

Wine Bibber Sangria has moved from Thonglor to Ekamai (Sukhumvit 63) at the top of sub soi 2. The revamped set up is great and has brought the place a real vibrancy. Though there is live music most nights (starting around 8:30 to 9pm till well past midnight), only once a week or so is jazz. Call first to see what's on. An in-house sound engineer ensures the superb sound system purrs flawlessly. What's specially nice is that the noisy "talkers" mostly sit outside, allowing the "listeners" to be at peace with the music. Plan of having dinner as the food is as good as the music.

Sweets Records at 440/10 Thonglor on the main road between soi 14-16 (above the 7-11) is getting more and more active with it's acoustic evenings. Every visit there has been wonderfully rewarding. To remind you, this is a very intimate, small setting, perfect for "listeners", with the audience absolutely silent while music plays. Bobby, the owner, is trying out caffeinated Live Jazz sessions every Saturday at 3 pm starting January 25th with a set coffee menu at B250. The Cotton Club premises at Shanghai Mansion, Chinatown (beginning of Yaowarat next to Scala Shark's fin) is under major renovation, and the resident Siam Swing Band now play (Tue-Sat) on the ground floor open air bar right on the main road! The great visibility ensures a packed audience most every night, with few getting up once they've sat down. To remind you, this is probably the only jazz venue in Asia that mostly plays Swing, New Orleans, & Jazz from the early 1900s.

Smiles Jazz & Bistro on Ruam Rudee is proving itself worthy, with good jazz all five nights it has a live band (Wed-Sun). Looking forward to more roving musicians becoming aware of their jam sessions on Sunday, specially pianists who can take advantage of their baby grand.

Iron Faries on Thonglor underwent major renovation last year, and feels four times its previous size, with the same warm, cosy and unusual decor. Now there's plenty of space upstairs to sit closer to the jazz band. Go early, as this venue is always busy.

Forgot to mention some months ago that Admiral's Pub, Hotel Mermaid Bangkok, (Sukhumvit 29) no longer have live music.

  21. It must be time for a little update on the jazz scene in Bangkok!

    Good news

A new place has opened earlier this month (October 2013) in the "center of town" on Ruamrudee by well known Thai jazz vocalist Natasha Patamapongs.
Smiles Jazz & Bistro at Ruamrudee Village (between the back sides of Le Meridien Plaza Athenee & Conrad Hotel) has live jazz 6 days a week (closed on Mondays).

One might have high expectations when a jazz musician opens a music venue. Well, you won't be disappointed by the ambience or the sound. I believe this is now the only non-hotel jazz venue still open that has a baby grand, and it's being regularly used! Oh, the food is as scrumptious as the music, so plan on spending a long evening when you drop by.

Then there is that hidden gem that most could just not find without a "word of mouth" mention from one of the many young Thai jazz musicians that end up playing there.
Sweets Records at 440/10 Thonglor between soi 14-16 (above the 7-11, next to Baan Klang Krung Village)

Lovely acoustic sets of themed jazz evenings in a very intimate, small setting, this place is really perfect for "listeners."
There's absolutely not a sound from the audience while music plays, a rarity in this city, and a blessing for the true listener.
Be aware that on music nights, the seating is theater style, and there's a cover charge (usually B300 that includes a drink) to cover the musician's costs.

Check out some of the theme night videos here.

A once a week delight is the early Thursday (7-9:30pm) jazz trio session at Aldo's Wine Bar at Ascott (The Residence) on Sathorn. Now this is a delight, specially if you're lucky not to have a couple of inconsiderate noisy yakkers at a table next to you.

The Rehab Gallery of Music at RCA has jazz some nights of the week, often till late night. Other nights could be anything - such as Rock, Blues, Rock & Roll.
It's facing the main RCA lane, up from the road in a building (Block D) on the right hand side as you drive down the lane.
Here's a youtube video of a gig there some months back
