  1. I'm doing research on arrests for marijuana possession/use in Thailand and would love to get some first-person accounts from people who have gone through it here.

If you've had any interaction with the Thai police regarding marijuana, whether or not arrested or prosecuted, please get in touch. I would love to talk to you for 10-15 minutes about your experience. The project is positive, not accusatory in any way toward marijuana, Thailand or any of its agencies or officers. I'm just trying to get an accurate idea for how it works here from first-hand accounts.

All shared information would remain anonymous; I wouldn't even ask for your name, if that's what you prefer.

Please PM if you would like to help me out.

    Thank you!

  2. From the advice on this forum, I convinced a Thai friend to go to Suanprung. And I regret it completely.

As soon as we stepped through the front door, we were on some kind of strange conveyor belt through the stations. We never knew what was happening or how long it would take or anything. Just "move to the next station and wait". There's absolutely no personal help given, no private consultation. It feels cold and frightening to anyone who might be a bit fragile. She was asked the same questions by two different nurses, which took about two hours, and then started getting the exact same questions by the doctor. All of the questions were very personal, the handling impersonal, and in a PUBLIC and uncomfortable space. After a while, it felt almost involuntary, like a bad movie where they'd misdiagnose her and commit her against her will.

Of course, I knew that was just paranoia until they actually wouldn't let us leave! And it started to feel SCARY. We told the doctor at least ten times that she had to get back to work (true) and he refused us repeatedly from leaving. Not in a "this will take a minute" kind of way. He just ignored it and continued asking the questions on and on. We had to basically push our way out. It was so bizarre. Were they trying to help her? I don't get it. (She's THAI so it wasn't a communication problem.)

Probably it was just indelicate and callous handling of someone in a fragile state, but nevertheless, it wasn't anything like what we were looking for. I would never go back there. Obviously, others here in this forum had a much different, more positive experience. Just thought I'd share.

  3. Maybe I skimmed too fast, but I don't see any rule that forbids people from expressing disappointment in local businesses! That would also somewhat contradict the point of a website like thaivisa.

I'm guessing the lack of responses is because not many people go to those wine buffets. I'd never even heard of it before.

  4. Well, I wouldn't say I'm struggling. This is my first effort to find someone. This is a small and recurring project and while money is part of the issue, I also am hoping to meet and develop a long-term working relationship with someone with those abilities. 2000B isn't a problem at all over a period of time. 2000B an hour is a problem. I just want the money to go into the hands of the individual and not into the hands of some business for their work. I can offer a fair wage for their work. Sorry if that was misleading.

I understand your point, and yes I agree that being a cheapskate when it comes to employees ends up often being more expensive.

Thanks a lot for the advice and offer, eyecatcher. I will most likely get in touch with you at some point about this.

  5. I'm trying to find a chinese person in Chiang Mai to do some translation from English to Chinese and Thai to Chinese. I'm looking for an individual rather than a professional service because I'm not a rich farang, I'm one of the poor ones. Haha

Does anyone know anybody here in Chiang Mai (or nearby) who'd be interested in doing a little freelance work?

    Thanks!

  6. rumor is the key word there. there's no doubt they're bad for your health. but i can imagine everybody already knew that before these few posts.

anybody know when they became illegal here in thailand? i heard they were found at rincome night market as late as 2008. not sure if they're still there, i'll go take a look when i can spare another 3 hours.

  7. Anybody know where I can buy kretek / clove cigarettes in Chiang Mai? I have no leads at the moment.

I found an old thread from 2006 which mentioned some mythical tobacco shop near the night bazaar. 3 hours of walking around later, i might have found the referenced place or i might not have, but i didn't find any cloves for sale.

    Any help is appreciated!

  8. I'm surprised I couldn't find any posts on this already:

I'm looking for an affordable golf instructor (thai or farang) in/around CM. For me, 1000B an hour isn't affordable. I'm pretty terrible at golf and only looking to put time & money into this new hobby if I can do so very cheaply.

thanks for all the useful advice! (and thanks also for the flames that are a'comin!)

  9. Drove really far out on that road luther suggested (two separate days actually), I clocked about 40 km round-trip on my motorbike and didn't find anything like a junkyard. At least, it wasn't apparent from the road. I can't read Thai yet, so it's probably harder for me than for some of you old hands. I did find some second hand furniture shops that seemed pretty good but didn't find anything.

I'm thinking you guys out in the sticks and driving cars have a different idea about distances. Haha.

So, I'm back to square one. Anybody know of any shops around that might have wooden furniture for cheap? Otherwise next stop will be Suksawat Lumber suggested by Dante99 and I'll just have to build it.

    Thanks again -

  10. I just got a nice-looking door from Global House today for 625 that'll work perfectly. The cheapest door there was around 550.

I'll check out the place luther suggested for the other parts needed for my masterpiece. Thanks a lot guys, your help has been invaluable!

  11. By the way, I did walk into the fitness center after arriving in CM and took a look around. Sorry, don't know if it was opposite a swimming pool or convention center. It was right near a round-a-bout and close to the softball field, I think.

For anyone else who might be curious, it was shockingly gloomy. About one step up from a pile of rocks on the side of the freeway. I wasn't expecting much of anything and was shocked.

  12. What a tease! You going to tell us?

I ate at Salsa Kitchen the other day and while they say "San Francisco" all over the place and it's not SF-style at all, it was pretty good. Way better than that nonsense served at the restaurants near the moat.

  13. I read some pages of that script. It's about the most idiotic and unrealistic concept you can imagine in Thailand. Thai people don't act that way. It was clearly written by someone who needed a stock "3rd world country" and doesn't know sh*t about this country, its people or culture.

Just another movie to ensure most Americans are too terrified to ever travel outside its borders.

  14. Hi, yes this is a weird request but I want to be a total cheapskate and "build" a desk. Thinking more like the college dorm method: use an old door on two filing cabinets.

So, I'm wondering if anyone knows where in/around Chiang Mai to find old doors or large pieces of discarded glass or marble that could make the top of a desk. My office is enormous, so it can be large.

I guess I'm looking for a junk yard or supply yard for builders -- but I have no idea what that would be exactly in Thailand. Thank you for all advice!

  15. I need to leave Thailand in December to get my single-entry Non-Imm Education Visa and I would really like to go to Vietnam. My school in Chiang Mai said that there have been problems getting Non-ED visas in Vietnam recently and they're pushing me to go back to Laos AGAIN. Has anyone tried to get this kind of visa in Vietnam recently or heard of any problems? I'm wondering if my school is just trying to make it easier on themselves, and avoid unknown issues, rather than actually knowing of a specific problem.

I found no relevant posts on Thaivisa about Non-ED visas in Vietnam and only positive posts on getting tourist visas there, most a bit outdated. I apologize if this has been covered somewhere recently.

Any help or info is appreciated. Thank you!

  16. Wow you guys are awesome. I checked amorn at icon near the north moat but they don't have that cable nor a useful employee, apparently. Ill check the other amorn my friend told me about and think through the other options.

Ordering from Bangkok would be fine but couldn't find any matches when searching English terms and site:.th in google. Any recommendations on where to mail order in Thailand?

Thanks for the projector suggestion! Ill check Siam tv tomorrow.

  17. I'm looking to buy a toslink optical audio to minijack / miniplug cable. I have no idea where to get this kind of thing in Chiang Mai. Anybody have a suggestion on where to look?

I'm also looking for a ceiling mount for my epson ex7200 projector but ill post another thread about that if no easy answers here.

    Thank you!

  18. Thanks for the advice, mascarakatze, but I'm over 7000 miles away from CMU at the moment.

I need to make a decision before I arrive to Thailand that is partially based on the quality of the CMU Fitness offerings. I'm not expecting much, but I'd love to get a better idea for what it has to offer.

    Thanks --

  19. Hi, I have done the searches and found a few vague, mostly negative comments about the CMU Fitness Center but I'd really love to hear first-hand what exactly it offers. This would be the Chiang Mai University weight room(s).

All I'm interested in is free weights and weight machines (bench, row, pulldown, etc). I'm sure there are better gyms in town, but can someone who's actually seen this place in the last few years give an idea for what it has?

    Thank you in advance!!
