  1. Good luck to you. I married a Burmese lady but different situation..we met in Guam...a US territory.and she requested Political Assylum when she arrived in Guam. She eventually got the assylum, moved to the USA..and then we married in the USA. I assume she is in Thailand now? Why not have her goto the Australian Embassy and request to get married? Do they really need Burma's approval? Or..is Political Assylum possible (Longer route..I think and more complicated).

My wife got political assylum granted on the Island of Guam. We met while she was enroute to the USA..and eventually got together in the USA. Different situation.

Does she need a passport from Burma to travel to Australia..is this the struggle you are having? I would assume that she's in Thailand illegally? IF she got political assylum up on the Thai/burma border...moves into a camp..she could then marry legally in Thailand (I think). Just ideas.

I can confirm that money will make anything happen in Yangon. Been there, done that. Just takes money. Find a burmese contact that has those contacts in Thailand..and make sure you know him, his family etc...and then make the deal. Make it clear that you know him..where he lives etc..and he better not rip you off. You then have some leverage. He's probably in Thailand illegally and if he doesn't come through for you..you do have some leverage/ability to get the Burmese guy into legal troubles. I think this is then safe to make a deal for a passport from Burma.

    Best of luck!

  2. I totally agree. Just ideas...American system is OK is some ways..but could certainly use some tweaking. Problem of course is that much that needs changing needs Congress to vote on..and of course Congress would never vote away their jobs. Quite a catch 22.

    Another idea:

    - With a certain # of signed partitions nation wide....Items can be brought to national Vote. Not sure if this is possible today or not in America.

I could never see Congress limiting their powers and/or limiting their terms in office. So I think there needs to be some checks & balances in place to allow the people to petition and force national votes on these sort of issues.

I also need that Congress should be able to offer solutions to a problem (Example - National Deficits) and then give the bills to the Public/People to vote on during national elections. Why? Because I think both parties know that we need to take drastic measures to fix USA's problems..but no politician wants to be the bearer of bad news to the people. So often, National Referendum Votes give the politicians "Cover" and allow the people to vote their for the solutions.

Of course..this would be less necessary if the politician didn't have to worry about re-election. He'd simply be able to vote the way he knows he needs to vote for the people. Re-election can have such a negative influence in the world of politics.

  3. Suggestions to the American form of Gov't that the Thai Gov't should consider:

    - Limit Congress terms in Gov't to (1) Term:

This takes the career politicians out of politics. You only want people in Congress that truly want to spend their full term sincerely serving their people. Once they need to run for re-election, special interests and the need to raise money comes into play. 1/2 way through their term and they are already playing partisan politics and spending their time raising money.

    - All spending must be paid for as determined by an independent accounting body (In the USA, we have an independent Govt' authority that does the accounting).

    - Ruling party in Congress should NOT have the only voice as to which bills are considered in congress. This allows both the majority and minority parties to be part of concress and lesses the partisanship. Maybe divide the bills that come to vote based on party percentages in Congress? Something like this.

I'm sure there are lots more to this..but these these are just a few pitfalls of the American System. No system is perfect..but why not learn for others to bring a more perfect union. Good Luck!

  4. My wife is Burmese..but same same....she lives in the USA...does business in Chiang Mai.

She'll take the train from BKK to CM or to Mae Sot...just to save money. I keep telling her to take the plane, but she insists.

Just their nature. I can't even get her to spend money on herself..and buy herself nice clothes here in America, I need to take her out to buy her clothes.

Then..she'll return them if I spend more than $30 on a shirt or shirts.....

I will say that marrying Asian ladies is not easy...for both the man and woman, the cultural differences..and the language barriers are difficult.

Need a very dedicated lady for her to go through the entire process. Yes...marriage is a process..and it is not always easy. So far, it has been a success for us though.

If I had it my way, I'd live in Thailand (Wife can not go back to Burma til she becomes an American Citizen...a few years away)....

We both hope to reside in Thailand in the future...close enought to her homeland and safe enough for a farang to live and enjoy life.

  5. American...Laid Off...for first time in 18 yrs of work...

Time to consider moving to Thailand..and taking a 6 month to 12 month vacation...life journey.

I just think I could never get such an opportunity again in life. I have some money in the bank...I know I'd spend less money vs. living in the USA...

and I honestly see no chance of finding a job in the USA for 6 months. Construction business here is just "Dead" these days.

    I figure 60K to 80K baht / month..maybe learn to live a bit frugal..that's OK.

No hard feelings on the situation..Life is Life..shit happens....Could be a life journey.

My goal is to fly to India, and then rent nice dirt bike..and then drive up into Nepal, into China, down into Laos, and then into Thailand.

Or...my real dream...is to drive the Burma trail from India through northern Burma...then into China, Laos and Thailand.

Just not sure of the safety of going into Burma. Wife doesnt like the idea..(She's burmese..and knows the wrath of the miltary) but..we'll see.

  6. I was just in Thailand..and I was amazed as to the new population of Moslems in BKK. They are taking over the city. I saw entire Hotels full of Saudi's etc...quite surprised to see this.

It is only a matter of time til the moslems in BKK move to terrorism. All in the name of Allah. They simply will not be able to resist the temptation. Sick as it may be!!

    Crazy

  7. American point of view:

I was just in Chiang Mai this past week and I saw the damage and the water line of the previous flooding. Water was 3' high in placed all through the middle of town. Saw stores still closed etc...

Sad to see that it all could happen again. I was told that this past flood was the first major flood in Chiang Mai for the past 40 years. How odd if it happens again! Lets all pray that there's no more damage to Chiang Mai.

  8. Question for you: What is your job in Thailand?

I'd love to just move to Thailand..but I, like the original person that posted his issues....am very concerned with how I can live/survive in thailand. I'm an engineer/Construction Manager in the USA and there's really not much opportunity to work in thailand with a foreign construction firm.

My work in Thailand will soon end and to be honest, not alot of opportunities to make western income in SE Asia.

Just looking for the right job.

I'd give up my good income for Thailand..simply for the opportunities and adventure but I can't set myself up for failure if I can't have a good reliable income in thailand.

Considering an online wholesale/retail business....would love to spend time working for non profits in thailand etc...

  9. Once you know a thai person...you must agree with your statement.

Not only Thais..but most in the SE Asian area are very very pleasant people.

Not sure if it is from their national pride, their buddhist belief or what...but it is alway pleasant getting off of a plane and seeing a smiling thai face. They never seem to stop smiling.

  10. I'm looking to create relationships with a smaller garment firm that can make Mens/womens outer wear. I'm looking to create a wholesale and retail (Internet) business selling clothes. I'm considering making up my own line of clothes.

What do I need? I don't have 500,000 to place huge orders. I am looking to find a smaller firm that wants to partner...make 500 pieces of each piece...with the idea of making more once the product sells. My goal is 80% wholesale and 20% retail sales. I have the first line of clothes in mind...and now I'm looking for a person that wants to venture with me.

I need quotes for the pieces...I'll come to Thailand to resolve the materials/quality issues. I want high high quality stuff.

Any smaller garment firms that are willing to take on smaller orders at reasonable prices? We set it up with a sliding price scale. More I buy, the lower the unit cost. Sweet and simple.

Let me know at [email protected]

    Thx

  11. Hello there, David is back to respond. Sorry it has been so long.

I'm looking to get quotes...but I can't commit to some large 5,000 piece order..so thsi is my dilemna. Basically..I want to select 6-8 garments that work together, advertise online and wholesale...and then place orders. Maybe first order 200 of each garment as a starting point..and then go from there with future orders. Maybe setup a sliding scale on price to where unit price drops if I order more over a period of time. I'm basically trying to find a deal where we work together to create a consistent flow of orders.

What is the size of your business?

Can you make clothing? Mens/womens outerwear?

I have some pics..and some basic specs of a few pieces.

Basically..my goal is to sell these items both wholesale and retail online. I have direct connections in NYC and LA...and my wife would be my sales person travelling and selling. I'll run the internet, purchasing...and expanding of the business.

My email is [email protected]. lets talk

  12. My wife and I are considering moving to Thailand and creating a relationship with a small garment firm in Chiang Mai. We are looking to do smaller deals on clothing. Our business interest is in making high quality clothes and selling them both wholesale and retail. We will also sell/advertise on internet. Basically...I don't have the Million dollar pockets to buy in bulk..I'm looking for the smaller factory that will work with me on smaller orders with Just in Time manufacturing.

We set the prices, I go get the orders...and I'll buy from you. But my goal is to have you create my own line of clothing...that can be marketed in the USA.

its a team type concept where we all make profit and we help eachother grow.

I'm looking for that go-getter attitude..that person that wants to make a winning relationship. Youth is great...I love a young entrepreneur that wants to make it happen.

  13. Is there any textile industry up in Chiang Mai ? I'm looking to create a relationship to get clothing products made in thailand and exported into USA. I have very specific outer clothing items in mind. I know the product...have samples..and ready to take quotes from manufacturers that would like to do the job. Taking bids.

Can anyone help me out? Looking for Material suppliers..and a small manufacturing facility that would like to make maybe 2,000 jackets / month.

  14. You seem to know the business environment of Thailand. I'm looking to work out a deal where i have clothing manufactured in norther thailand...via a family member..and then have it shipped to USA.

I wish to fly to Thailand and get my niece in Chiang Mai setup with a business plan and business license so we can start this business. Is there any special secrets about how to setup a business? I'm basically using my family member as a "Pass thru" to do day to day dealing for me. She'll take the product and ship it to me in USA. She'll get a fair wage and do all my leg work for me. Any secrets to the exporting business? Setting up a business? My reasoning is complicated..but I want the transaction to go through my niece via invoice.
