  1. I relocated to Chiang Rai 6 months ago (after moving to Pattaya 5 years ago, my daughter used to go to Burapha International school there). The teacher to pupil ratio at CRIS is superb, the class sizes likewise are very small with only 120 boys in the school (capacity 500). I met 4 or 5 teachers who were all English, I didn't check their C.V.'s which I think is very important before making a decision. My 8 year old Thai daughter didn't like the school, and my concerns were (a) the social element, I think there aren't enough students to develop the friendships/inter-personal social skills I would want her to have, (B) the curriculum is geared towards foreigners and I am told, not recognised by Thai Universities, and © I felt it was run as a business rather than for the students benefit, the owner also has a large golf course complex nearby. I think a lot depends on whether your children are going to stay in Thailand or go back to Britain later, if the latter then CRIS is perfect. AMEC is also very good, and perhaps better than CRIS, and certainly better established. In the final analysis, I let my daughter decide, she will never need to work for a living and I left the door open for her to go to CRIS in 2-3 years if she changes her mind. Remember also, the curriculum at CRIS is American, so end of year holidays are July/August whereas all Thai Schools are March/April etc. If you want the best, then board your children in one of Bangkok's excellent International schools. Finally, Chiang Rai is a wonderful place, though dining out can be a little restricted if you're a gastronome.

  2. It is open now as La Cuisine with a more international menu and lower prices, still does Burgers almost indistinguishable from the ones before, cheapest burger in a bun is 35 baht, or a large one with french fries at 85 baht. The business wasn't sold but the two owners (Frank & Barry) parted wayswith Frank taking Funny House, Night Bazaar and Maekachan PTT station. WCH (Barry) still operates at the old airport golf club 1.5km away and is switching his meat to Don's so quality should be first rate, but expect to spend 180 baht for a triple burger/double fries at an entry level price.

  3. The best food at WCH has always been at the golf course restaurant, I think it's because Barry is there and it get's extra special supervision. The buns are toasted that little bit more and the pizza's are superb. It's better at lunchtime than evening unless you are well anointed in mozzy repellent, it's an outdoor restaurant. His burgers are superb, especially the one stuffed with mozarella.

  4. La Cuisine, International Food is set to open 1st February at 3 of the 4 locations of WCH Hamburgers following the split between Barry and his investor (Frank). WCH continues at the old air force golf course and LC at Funny House, Night Bazaar and PTT station halfway to Chiang Mai. I have tasted half a dozen or so of their proposed dishes (pizza's, pasta's, steaks, burgers, chicken etc) and it was good. Prices are expected to be cheaper than all competitors as they are aiming for volume, rather than premium. Also likely to be a discount scheme for local Farang's & Thai's to keep it busy in low season. On the other hand, Barry said he was going to stop his SAM (Small Appetite Menu) which means prices going up at WCH.

If you are going to spam your new restaurant Brucey7, try a little harder to make it look like it is not spam, (ie vary the posts a little) and also try to avoid taking a pop at former partners because it is not likely to win you friends.

    Paul,

Can I suggest you engage your brain before your mouth! It helps to stop you looking like an imbecile.

I have no connection with WCH or La Cuisine, other than I used to eat at WCH's various restaurant's half a dozen times a week which is why I was probably asked to sample the new menu at LC. I am not aware I am taking "a pop" at anyone, only repeating what my friend Barry told to me about the SAM menu/pricing at WCH golf course and the strategy told to me by the new CEO at LC.

As for winning friends, I prefer to select my friends from the more intelligent amongst us Paul!

    Kind regards

    Bruce

    KimoMax,

I also have a cousin called Bruce, and you can still eat at the sole remaining WCH restaurant at the Air Force Golf Club.

  7. I am also interested in doing something to heat my new pool 50km North of Chiang Rai. I have looked at heat pumps from the USA (expensive), China (cheap) and because my home is on top of a mountain, I could put solar collectors below it and allow convection to do the trick. I may knock something up with wood, glass and black paint/pipe, but if you are importing anything, let me know.

  8. Guys, just a short note on volunteering and filling sandbags etc. Unless you have a work permit permitting this activity and with that specific location included, you cannot do it. PERIOD.

Just like the guy in Pattaya who raised half a million baht for charity (kids with HIV) and then had to get himself out of trouble the usual way when arrested.
