  1. Clarification from Tom333:

Sorry Lopburi3. I have been here all year with a Thai wife visa which needed only that I check in every 90 days. The last check in I was late hence the late date on the new 90 days. This is the normal Thai wife visa where I needed to show the pictures, money in bank and etc. I was asking about the renewal or one year extension of that visa. But I do not know if the extra time to Jan 30 means the Thai wife visa is still in place until then or if it really expires as stated on my passport on Dec. 11. The trip to Cambodia is a complication in that I may not be back to Bangkok until after Dec. 11. I wondered if the rentry permit had dates and if the dates depended on my visa. I prefer to keep the status of one year Thai wife based visa so do want to renew that. The visa does not mention 'non immigrant o', only 'Thai wife'. Does this help?

First we need to know what you have and what you want to do and your post paints a confused picture.

Do you have a multi entry non immigrant O visa valid for one year?  If you do that is not a marriage visa (no such thing) but is issued to allow you to visit and does not require anything but a good reason (such as marriage certificate to a Thai).

To obtain another of this type you have to go overseas and apply at a Consulate (Penang in Malaysia in the only close Consulate that will normally issue).  It would require marriage certificate and maybe copy of wife id card to prove you still together.

It appears you have the multi entry and your last entry was a few days ago and resulted in a permitted to stay until January 30.  Your multi entry however expires on Dec 11 so you will indeed need a re-entry permit, single at 1,000 baht which you will then enter on your new arrival card and the permitted to stay will be January 30.  To obtain the re-entry permit you need a 4x6cm photo (maybe more if upcountry) and the money.  Fill out the form and wait.  If you know exact dates of travel there is a place on form to enter.

After you return you can, up until the permitted to stay date, go to immigration with full particulars for an extension of stay for supporting Thai wife.  You should be able to find the full outline of what paperwork to bring in one of my posts from this morning.  Or if you do not have the money you can make a trip to Penang for another visa to buy more time.

  2. Here is my situation: current Thai wife one year visa runs out Dec. 11, 2005; Most recent 90 day check in resulted in allowance to stay until January 30, 2006. (I was late) I have to get a reentry permit since will go to work in Cambodia for at least a month starting Nov. 16.

    Questions:

To renew marriage visa what do I need to show? just the bank account with 400K? Or is it the entire process all over like the first time a year ago?

Can I delay the marriage visa renewal until January 30? Would help in terms of getting money.

Does the rentry permit depend on the length of my current visa? I will likely get multiple entry in case I have to return to do the marriage visa. What do I need to bring to get the reentry permit?

I tried to get these answers from the Thai immigration website to no avail.

    Thanks as always.

  3. Thanks very much for the advice on visas given previously. I went to KL and easily got a non imm O multiple entry visa. My Thai wife did use her US passport to come back and just got a one month visa at entry. She will get a thai passport soon. After she gets a thai passport how does she reconcile the US passport in terms of the visa running out?

My plan is to extend my O visa to a year marriage visa. Is this done at the end of the 90 days or anytime? If I have the money in the bank but am currently not employed and not retired will this be a problem?

Thanks again for your help initially.

  4. Thanks for the very informative answers. One thing I forgot. Do I need a return ticket to the US in order to get back into Thailand? My current visa is provided by my company but that ends in a few days. Yes I know we need to get the Thai passport for my wife and will do that after returning right away. (She has one but it has expired) So according to Lopburi3 do not get her a visa in KL and just let her return on the US passport and get a visa on arrival?

Funny I have been in Thailand now for 10 years but never had to deal with handling my own visas and etc. I really appreciate your help.

Your wife should apply for a Thai passport.

It is a straight forward procedure.

She will need her id card and household papers, originals, the passport office will do all the scanning direct to their computer.

They will also take the photo on their computer set up.

The application takes an hour or so.

The passport can be collected 7 days later, or posted to her.

You wife can then enter the US on her US passport

and Thailand on the Thai one, no visa required.

You do not say what visa you have?

You should apply for a Non Imm O visa.

You will need you marriage certificate (US or Thai, does not matter).

This will give you 90 days initially, then can be extended to one year.

You will have to show an income of 40Kbaht per month, or a lump

sum of 400K in the bank to get the extension.

In a similar way you will be able to renew it each year.

With this visa you will also be able to apply for a work permit, subject to a suitable job,

if you wish to work.  Otherwise you can enjoy life without working, as long as you meet

    the financial requirements, listed above.

  5. I am an american, age 54, and my wife is Thai/American. She has a Thai ID card but not a Thai passport. We arrived on American passports with visas from a job. The job is finished and we have to leave this week to get new visas. We will go to KL this week for that.

For her how can she stay in Thailand as a Thai? Does she need to do something with her American passport so when she returns to the US (or wants to travel on US passport) it is OK visawise? Does she need to get some specific type of visa in KL?

For me what is my best visa option? I am not retiring but not working immediately. Can I get a one year marriage visa? What visa should I apply for in KL this week?

Thanks, since we are leaving Wednesday for KL any help is greatly appreciated.
