Some say speculators don't push up or affect prices much at all.

But to my mind the extra "demand" of money in play by open market trading must have a huge affect of price.

Why not stabilise things and find true price by only allowing trade by sellers and those taking actual delivery of the commodity?

I guess because it would cut out the parasites.

Global meltdown maybe short term exceedingly painful but could be a great opportunity also.

    Ridiculous.

    sensible

  2. We are discovering more and more is that the world is comprehensively broke in every sphere, and in every dimension and in every way. The governments in every level are all broke, the households are going broke, the banks are insolvent, the money really is not there.

in his new book Too Much Magic, Jim attacks the wishful thinking dominant today that with a little more growth, a little more energy, a little more technology -- a little more magic -- we'll somehow sail past our current tribulations without having to change our behavior.

    sums up people like yoshiwara

  3. yes but isn't that what we FEAR? would it not make more sense to only lend what you can repay? to sell only what you HAVE?

I am guessing you meant to say "only borrow what you can repay".........& sell what you have

Yes of course & that is how I live MY life.

But this has been the instant gratification generation hasn't it? The trend continues

None including the government themselves borrow what they can repay

Consumers rack up credit bills because credit has been too easy to obtain & they want their crap today.

Not when they can afford it.

Sad yes? When I was a kid they had something called lay-away

My mom would buy something say an appliance or a gift for one of us for Christmas

She would take the item to a back counter called lay-away...Put some money on it & the clerk would

jot it down in a book & take the item in the back storage area & put her info on it.

Then every pay day my mom would go in & put $xx dollars on it till it was paid. It was at that time that they gave her the item.

Today you see people use credit to buy a burger at burger king

Of course a big purchase like a home or auto always had a loan but..............You had to qualify.

Your income had to be stable & adequate. Even then when folks did get a mortgage it was a matter of pride to

pay extra & early so they could get it paid off & have a quaint burning of the mortgage party.

I am glad I grew up in those times & learned that way of doing things. I stumbled once when young but have learned &

lived the majority of my life this way.

As for Sell what you have? Well that would kill the casino's they call markets wouldn't it smile.png

No you didn't and you slide over the reality (to suit your interests) but not a crime.

When an individual takes out a mortgage, say for 25-30 years, they do not provide a guarantee that the money will be repaid.

Job may be lost, illness, divorce a whole host of events may happen.

Your mortgage loan is exactly money that you don't have and is a 'promise' to pay in the future.

The bank, mortgage company is taking on risk in making the loan to you.

No different one might say than governments borrowing money against anticipated future receipts.

What is sauce for the goose is also good for the gander. Better not to get on a high horse. Might fall off.

you slide over the reality too

  4. US city cuts worker pay by 70 %

Public workers in the hard-up US city of Scranton, Pennsylvania have had their pay slashed to minimum wage-levels as a budget fight between the mayor and city council comes to a head.

About 400 municipal workers in the city — including police officers, firefighters and construction workers &mdsah; are being subjected to steep pay cuts that have sparked a string of lawsuits.

The city, which is the birthplace of Vice President Joe Biden and has become synonymous with industrial decline, is facing bankruptcy and the mayor has refused to borrow more money to pay wages.

For police officers with two years on the job that now means a pay cut from $26 an hour to $7.25 an hour, a drop of more than 70 percent.

Construction workers who earn between $18 and $20 under union contracts will also get $7.25 per hour.

"All the vendors are getting 100 cents on the dollar, but the people keeping the buildings from burning down have seen their pay slashed by 75 percent," Stephen Holroyd, an attorney representing three of the city's workers' unions, told AFP.

Roger Leonard, a heavy equipment operator for the city told National Public Radio last week that he typically gets a $900 check for two weeks of work. After the pay cut, it dropped to only $340.

"I have two children and a wife, and my wife is a stay-at-home mom," said Leonard. "If the savings gets drained, we won't be okay, but I'm hoping before that happens, that they come to a resolution," he told reporters.

The city, about 190 kilometers north of Philadelphia is one of a number of so-called rust belt cities that have seen manufacturing and heavy industry flee over past several decades, leaving behind empty downtown storefronts.

now San Bernardino looks like filing bankruptcy

  5. I would like to vist Myanmar as a tourist but I don’t get the feeling the government there is making it easy for tourists and I don’t understand why ? They are making visa on arrival available to business people but what is the point of that if the tourists don’t find it so easy to get there?

I live outside Bangkok so an application for a visa at the embassy would mean two journeys ( i.e. one to apply and again to collect the passport )which is too much hassle.

I was quoted $85 through a travel agent for a visa on arrival including the $30 fee but this is too much in my opinion.

There was meant to have been an e- visa website but this was promised in February and is still not working.

  6. there is no mention as to whether the victim and the alleged perpetrator " discussed " this

in any way . I mean why didnt this thug give at least the opportunity for the victim to pay money for the damage

to the car ( if there was any ) ?

Frightening to think of what kind people are out there who get so seriously upset over such trivial things ?

  7. It is a very difficult equation .. even in London .. say Canary Wharf .. There is a lot of supply and demand especially with the Olympics .. but what happens after .. with increased supply and perhaps job losses in the city ...

If you have a property in a prime location .. OK .. but prime locations do not come cheap . so few can afford ...

and if ones property is not rented then expenses can really hurt ..insurance , local taxes , interest , management etc ..

Just locally Samui has quite a good market for modern well located properties for holiday or long term rentals .. but there is a lot of older property for rent where the market is more challenging ..

True that. The old story of location, location, location.

However there are plenty financing their residence in Thailand with the rental of their houses/apartments in the UK or the US.

To suggest that they should give up that income for a bag of coins would not get many takers.

The risk of tenancy is a managed risk for most.

exactly! I have two small houses in the UK and some condos here - both generating about the same income - can't see it ALL crashing and can't see any wisdom in selling and buying PM's in fact I just sold most of my Au to buy another property which will give me (as per normal) 7/8% net

but you can't deny the risk of chaos is growing ?i mean every country that matters

seems to be stretched like an elastic band in terms of debt and something

has to give sooner or later ?

I can see a very nasty war in the middle east having a domino effect on the global financial system

or the other way around... I cant decide which will come first. But every day i feel more and more we

are walking on egg shells .....

  8. Ah so that's where the quality tousists are. Good to know.

I spent about 4 hours at Central Mall. New shopping center. Very expensive. Very busy. A couple of weeks ago I saw the Chirathivat (owners) family there, mom and the kids. Mom was dressed to the nines and the kids were well mannered. It was obvious they owned the place. Mom walked like that. No entourage, I was a bit surprised, just the family. I don't think they care much for the red shirts.

pity about the beaches outside though

  9. Roberta Norton - a British survivor - has now confirmed that her partner/boyfriend - demanded the driver slow down. Cannot provide a link I understand but you can google it or google her name with drummond.

horrible that. i've had to do that on an overnight bus from chiang mai to udon thani before and the driver did eventually slow down a bit after about six of us kept bothering him and the bus staff about it. i won't take overnight buses in thailand any more and advise everyone who comes here to either spend more and fly places or if you can take a train, take the train. buses are just too much of a lottery.

i am sorry but you are simply wrong in your advice to others. Not all bus companies are the same.

I have travelled many many times with one bus company that has an unblemished record

On all the occasions i have been on NCA i have never seen their drivers speeding.

    "

Every bus is equipped with a Black Box which communicates directly to our control centre in Bangkok via GPS. The control centre is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to monitor the bus' speed and position in real time, and are prepared to handle any emergency situations immediately. "

All our drivers have long-term experience and are highly skilled. They also undergo various training programs to continually develop their skills. Drivers are required to wear a uniform and dress smartly as well as conduct themselves in a polite manner. All drivers complete NCA's "Driving without Accidents" program and have been commended by many institutes

Before each journey every drivers must take an alcohol breath test and have their blood pressure checked, to ensure the safety of our passengers.

  10. I dont want to make any wrong assumptions regarding a double entry

tourist visa I got in Laos so i just want to ask this question....

At the end of the first 60 days most people seem to go to Immigration

for a 30 day extension. But as an alternative to this,

if i wanted to could i just leave Thailand on the date on my first 60 day

stamp and spend te next 30 days in another country

but just ensuring that i re- enter Thailand for the

2nd entry before the expiry date of the visa ?

  11. Seems thailand has forgot about that little country to the north called china who have an excellent track record of exporting construction projects to garner favor amongst foreign countries in exchange for resources.

    China is far from Burma.

You need to travel all the way to Singapore, make a U turn and all the way back to reach Burma.

However, Thailand is just next door, and have land border access.

Oh boy!!!! China could build a highway to Burma, before this place could build a hotel !!!!!

  12. I can only say to Associate director Tony Picon Colliers International Thailand that he is wearing blinkersrolleyes.gif

Whatever infrastructure Myanmar may lack compared to Thailand will be more than compensated by the energy, enthusiasm and far superior level of education and English speaking skills possessed by the young people of Myanmar compared to the " think only inside the box " mentality in Thailand whistling.gif

    keep dreaming Mr Picon !

  13. Great observation lopburi, I wonder how many schools would still be in business if all of a sudden there were no more ED visas.

Walen School - more power to you.

BUT dont forget to read this thread......ermm.gif

    http://www.thaivisa....nt/page__st__75

Good one khaan, yes, please read this one, it is overwhelmingly positive with regards to Walen. Walen brand is well established in Thailand and thousands of students support us.

    hardly " unbiased " !

And what about that guy that was protesting outside your office recently saying you

would not refend his money ??

  14. If you want to go by bus why are you going to Bangkok first ?

You can go from Khorat to Chiang Mai and then from Chiang Mai to Mae Sai on the Green Bus.( see link below )

Then you cross over the border to Tachilek which is on the Burma side.

They will give you a card with a 14 day validity BUT you can only travel on that within a restricted radius of Tachilek

and I have to warn you there is not much to see there.

I am not aware any other entry point you reach easily by bus.

Otherwise you would need a full tourist visa for Burma and you would need to enter via the airport.

  15. I'm sorry for his family, but clips that have been shown on Fox News of his speaking makes it clear he was a horrible, obnoxious, superficial man. Apparently, he lost many of the liberal friends he grew up with. Understandably. Not saying liberals and conservatives can't be friends, but his actions were massively sleazy.

Founder of the tea party? Fitting perhaps because the tea party is dead.

    " horrible, obnoxious, superficial man."

you could say exactly the same thing about Bill Ayers ... you know Obama's " mate "

  16. Does anyone believe natural causes?... He had just announced that he has video and documents that will sink Obama's ship during the campaign... evidently, he was taken seriously.

sad to see such a freedom loving person meet an early death

Seems plausible to me, but then...................my tinfoil hat's at the drycleaners.

mine isn' t cool.png and i dont believe it was natural causes because its too much of a coincidence

I go by the guideline, once is happenstance, twice coincidence and three times is enemy action. Unless more right wing bloggers who threaten to embarrass Obama disappear then I will keep my hat off.

P.S Rejoicing at the death of mass murderers is one thing, but to do so because you dislike someone's politics does some people little credit.

Ok perhaps not a right wing blogger ...........but there are other deaths all the same......

  18. does anyone here understand the pricing of oil, petrol and diesel in Thailand and how this could affect the Thai economy?

this morning for example I heard in the USA they are forecasting 5 dollars per gallon and some believe this is enough

to trigger another recession. If 5 dollars is eating into the disposable income of Americans so much that it could have

this result, then surely high petrol prices would have an even bigger impact on the disposable incomes of Thai drivers?

  19. I need to drive from Chiang Mai to Pattaya which is ok because the road seems pretty straightforward

    - until that area around Chachoensao which all this seems to me to be a bit of a spaghetti Junction.

It would be helpful if I could look out for some landmarks as to when to make the necessary

manoeuvres off Highway number 32 which eventually becomes number 1 and I change onto

    Highway number 304-is that correct?

Would anyone who makes this journey regularly be able to give me some feedback as to what

landmarks they look out for on this journey in that Chachoensao area ?

    Thanks very much

  20. Cambodian insurance ... :-)

you can't just unilaterally take out separate car insurance for a hire car

without the express consent of the hire car company and more importantly

the insurance company of the hire car company. And I think you will also find

a paragraph hidden away somewhere in the hire car companies insurance agreement

which prohibits taking the vehicle out of the country.if you do things like that

you will soon find all the insurance companies have an excuse to render their agreements

void for failing to declare essential information.

  21. " The first 90 days of a Multiple-Entry Visa will start with a date stamp in your passport upon arrival in Thailand. Each entry's expiry date (89 days later) can be extended at an Immigration office in Thailand for 30 days at a cost of 1,900 baht, although most people choose to do visa runs (see a later section). If you make your last entry into Thailand immediately before your one-year multi-entry visa expires, you will actually get one year plus 90 days "

with regards to this definition about Multiple-Entry Visa's I wondered if someone could please tell me what the

official definition of the words " immediately before your one-year multi-entry visa expires " ?

for example if your visa expires on 11 March, are you able to exit and re-enter on that date itself

or is it safer to allow a gap of 2 or 3 days?
