  1. Have you got round to the plans stage yet? I had my own ideas as to the layout of the house, but needed someone who could turn them into architectural drawings, for planning permission etc. Cost only 15,000 for very detailed drawings. He doesn't speak English, but I recommend him. PM me for his phone number. We haven't started building yet, so I can't recommend him for that yet.

  2. Fire rages through Bangkok slum

Fire engines rushed to the scene,

Police are now investigating the cause of the fire, which is believed to have started in a two-storey house which had been rented out to Myanmar immigrants.

Fire engines rushing - I somehow doubt that.

Go on blame it on the Burmese....

  3. We've recently found out that we're pregnant and are looking at what options are available for us while living in Chiang Mai (Due in Dec).  While we're still debating whether to go home (Canada) or have the baby in Chiang Mai, we'd like to learn a bit more about other people's experiences here.  At the moment, we've had our first hospital visit at the Chiang Mai Ram with a new doc named Supachai.  Other than one person suggesting a doctor at Lanna Hospital (Dr Udom), we don't really know what's available or recommended. If you have any advice, stories or resources that you'd like to offer, please do so.  Thanks

Our baby was delivered at Chiang mai Ram by Dr Amnuay just over a year ago. Excellent facilities & Dr Amnuay is an excellent dr. I would definitely recommend this hospital. Excellent facillities. !5,000 bt for a regular birth, 25,000 for a c-section.

Enjoy the whole experience, we're still over the moon with Alexander!!!!

  4. A couple of years ago, I did the Chiang Dao mountain trek, spending one night on the top. Stayed at Malee's bungalows (next door to that Nest place). Malee's been there ages & is very helpful. Excellent meals. She organised a guide & porter for the 2 of us. We had our own tent, so didn't need an organised trek (I thought they were expensive, too). We wouldn't have needed a porter, but for the fact there is NO water on the mountain, everything has to be carried up. Great trek though. Do a google for malee chiang dao, she has a website.

  5. Wonderful place. Very Peaceful, beautiful gardens, comforatable rooms, good food... :o

Not sure which 'main road' you're referring to, but I'd say it's easy to find if you have a map- or a GPS. It's at the very end of the main road to Doi Angkhang.

If you do have a GPS, here is the GPS route in both .trk and a .xls  file formats.

Ajarn, I've tried to download this file 3 times, & each time I try to extract it I get an error message about a missing 613 bytes. Is the zip file ok?

    Cheers

My apolgies for the annoyance. The file is fine, but something happens after I upload the file... These should be okay individually http://asiarecipe.com/chiangdaodoiangkhangcm.trk

    http://asiarecipe.com/angkhang_trk.xls://http://asiarecipe.com/chiangdaodoia...ngkhang_trk.xls

The xls file is ok, but I can't open the trk file. Have tried trackmaker & gpsmapedit software whick should open a trk file but they give me a error message. don't know if the fle is corrupted again or i'm using the wrong software. What software do you use.

    Cheers

  6. Hi,

I think this was asked before - but I can't find the posting.

My wife is back in BKK right now, and will be picking up her new passport on Monday with my surname.

Her ticket back has her maiden name.. her entry permit here (Bermuda) has her maiden name..

The clerk at the dept of foreign affairs told her she's going to have to get her airline ticket updated to her new last name? Which I believe is false...

With her original passport, our marriage certificate, and her new passport is she likely to run into any problems? I can't see why? Her visa card and bank card have her married name?

    Sean

Are you sure your wife is picking up a "new" passport? My wife just got her's updated yesterday with change of surname to mine. They just stamped an ammendment on the relevant page showing her new name. Total cost 100 baht.

  8. This looks like the place to ask advice about first where to have my wife go to see a ob/gyn as she is 6mths pregnant and our only doctor is in BKK where we travel to monthly, for business not just the Dr.  But I would feel better if we had a good hospital/doctor in Chiang Mai - any suggestions we live in Nong Hoi, but I'll drive wherever for the best doctors.

Recommend Dr Amnuay at Chiang Mai Ram (NW corner of moat).

  9. "Our" personal finances????  I hope your wife is working. :o

    Doesn't your wife work?

Or maybe I should ask, doesn't your Mum?

But then I suppose you make all your own food and have always washed your own underpants.

My wife works very hard, but she doesn't contribute to a financial income. If your wife does then you shouldn't be discussing "your" finances.

  10. Having lashed out millions on a condo I thought about insurance for the condo and contents.

Went to a few places but find it difficult to actually find out what is covered and what they pay out.

My interest is to have a policy that:

Pays out in all cases of loss - no stupid exclusion clauses etc

Pays out most of the loss, don't mind paying the first 20,000 Baht or so provided I know that!

Has the lowest possible premium (mutually exclusive with points 1 and 2 I know!)

Best quote I have is from Royal and Sun Alliance but they cannot tell me of any local office nor give details of the policy.

Anyone with experience of a locally based company to use - prefereably someone who has had to claim and found the process went well.

    Thanks

Try QBE on southside of moat, to west of Chiang Mai gate. A friend of mine uses them to insure his condo. I get car insurance from them.

  11. I don't want to be controlled by a nanny state which thinks it should monitor my every move and action, in the name of law and order. I was brought up and instilled with a fair degree of common sense and self responsibility, therefore i have a good idea of what is right or wrong.

Unfortunately common sense seems to be lacking here. No need for control by nanny state - what is needed is education.

  12. a big transformer is 250,000baht, the transformers you buy from the electric company, if the area you are in builds up slowly then the electric company wil pay for all, never happens for us whiteys though :o

As I said there's already 3 houses close by - 1 other farang, 1 Thai who is willing to contribute & 1 "no money, not interested". I'm thinking the electric people in san kampaeng (home of toxin) are seeing 2 farang & refusing to provide wthe electricity without cash upfront, regardless of Toxin's promise of electricity for everyone...

However , if they're going to put in a big transformer & maintain it, that may be better than the cheaper alternative of buying our own transformer just for the 3 houses interested. Has anyone gne this route?

  13. Asfar as I know, a 3 phase supply is around 150,000 depending on the distance. This is a deposit so if at a later date the gov put it in then you can get the deposit back. A single phase is around 30-50,000 with the same deal. You then can get 30,15 or 5 amp meters (have to pay again).

I've been told that if you do it this way then the gov is responsible for the up-keep. Best to check though as this is only what I've been told.

    Cheers RC

That sounds about what we've been told.

What's special about the 3 phase supply compared to the single phase. Expect to be running maximum of 2 a/c , but water heating by solar power.

  14. I'm about to start house construction, & need to bring electricity to the land, about 200m from main road with high tension power (the taller concrete poles, not the massive steel pylons). Next to our plot a farang has completed his house & there are 2 other neighbours. All of these are running cables from a nearby house via extension cables, but only getting 5 amp electricity. The local electricity office (San Kampeang, Chiang Mai) is saying that the 4 of us have to get together & buy the transformer from them & pay 150,000 total (including transformer) for them to connect us up. They tell us we have to sign a contract together for this, & if anyone else wants to build a house nearby they have to join the contract & pay each of us their share of that 150,000 bt. Then, if the govt pays for electriicty to be brought into the neighbourhood at a later date we will have the cost of the transformer refunded.

Does anyone know if this is normal procedure, or are we being fleeced.

btw, there are concrete posts for carrying the cables already running from the main road, along our access road as far as our plot of land.

  15. I call UK using my mobile.  Dial 009 as the prefix to get international line, rather than 001.  Rate is about 7baht per minute.  That's using one2call prepaid card as well.

I'm using a DTAC/Happy prepaid SIM. Can I use 009 with DTAC, and if so where can I check out the call charges? Hopefully you can direct me to a web site.

    Thanks!

I would think you can. The offer is from CAT, not the mobile company. Best to try it out on a short call, checking your balance before & after.
