  1. Hello friends,

I used to live around the Thai cultural Center MRT and I really like the area. However,I'm not sure if my old building will give me a room for less than a 4 month lease. So I'm looking for a place that might offer month to month rental. I like to be on the Mrt line somewhere in between Rama 9 and Ratchada. My budget would be around 10,000 baht per month. Maybe a little up and a little down. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  2. every country has their own immigrant status in a particular country. this is because the absence of certain regulations could mean destabilization. if the usa lifted all visa requirements to latin americans you can imagine how that would affect the state. however if thailand lifted all visa regulations for developed states such as in the west or japan etc, there would be very little economic impact. none of these people would be flocking to thailand in search of economic oppurtunity the same way they would other immigrants come to their country. for that i think farrang an an exestential threat at best and are realistically just a minor annoyance. they are not in danger of affecting thai society to any great degree and probably do more good as they go about spilling money everywhere.

  3. i worked with a thai english teacher once who didnt think i was fit to be a teachr because i found some of the classroom conditions to be unacceptable. however i didnt think she was fit to be an english teacher because she seemed to be unable to speak or understand the language.

she said to me one day that the reason she has trouble understanding and speaking is because she studied english education and you see this means that she is only trained in how to "teach" english not use it.

this has been a common excuse used by many teachers to justify their inability to utililize the language as it was meant to be used, for communication. that is tbe point of languages after all.

my reply to teachers who hold this point of view is that it if you only know how to " teach english" and not how to use it then all you all you are doing for your students is teaching them how to teach english. the master cannot teach the student that which he does not know. so inevitably these students will be filed along and moved through without ever reaching a level beyond what their nstructor was capable of achieving.

  4. I think if you understood my school better you'd understand.

My classes are already supposed to be doubled up with a Thai co-teacher, but they never come. They're always "busy" but when I go back, I just see them chatting and eating in the office. If i left it would mean they would actually have to do their job.

The job kind of drives me crazy because i was told it was a Mattayom school with an intensive program, which to me meant, I would actually be teaching English. Unfortunately it's a zoo. And the intensive thing actually makes it worse because now the students are paying customers who can't be punished rather than students learning at an intensive level. It is 50 kids in a class, where some childern still can't count to 20 in English or write their own name. When I walk in I routinely see people screaming yelling, kicking balls around the classroom. I can't teach, it's practically impossible because I have no means of discipline. I was told that I wouldn't have to worry about it because I would be doubled up with a Thai teacher but, as I said, they never show up. I have expressed my frustrations as politely and clearly as I could, but the staff just seems to either not understand or not care. Perhaps a bit of both.

Even still, I wouldn't want to dump my schedule on someone, and I would like to give them a months notice, but that means that the 20k would probably be withheld. But if that money wasn't going to me, I'm not sure who it would even go to.

One of the reasons I feel ok with potentially <deleted> over the school is the school won't tell staff if they're being left on until the last moments of the term. A friend of mine wanted to go back to Australia and needed to know what the status of his job would be come next term so he could straighten out his finances and plan for a new visa if he needed to. He thinks he should be on, but still he is worried and doesn't know for sure. So how can this be a one way street? They can fire us without any hesitation and have our visa's yanked out from under us but we can't leave them?

Anyway without trying to spill out my life story I would like people to just explain to me what usually happens with holiday pay, if you get paid for the holiday but don't go back, would that make them extra furious? Make them mad enough to come after you? My students will be fine, however my co-teachers might actually have to do their job,so sad.

  5. So I was given a job at a government school and the school was not what I thought it would be. Certain things about it drive me crazy and I really think there are better deals out there. I am sticking it out till the end of the term but I don't have any intention of coming back. However, I still want to get my holiday pay. We were promised 50% salary during the month of October- about 20k, and I think i could really use it. I signed a contract with some sketchy agency but they took forever to get my Non B in order. So I just said forget it,  and I'm going with my own visa. I'm not on their work permit or anything.

Is there any penalty or negative repercussions for not showing up for school come next term? I would like to give them a month's notice but I don't think they'd give me that holiday pay. I feel like it's owed to me, but at the same time, I think it's given under the expectation that you will be returning to the school again. What do you think could happen if I just kept quiet, got the money and didn't go back?

  7. I have a non B that is set to expire April 30th. In the midst of confusion between trying to find a new job and Songkron, I missed my 90 day reporting on the 10th (8 days now...) I called the company I work for and asked them what I should do. They said that I can skip the 90 day reporting thing altogether because I am not going to use this non B again after April 30th.

They say that because my non b expires on the 30th, along with my contract, and since I will not be working there anymore, I will have no reason to renew my non B. If I'm not renewing my non B, I have no reason to go report after 90 days. I just let it run out and get whatever new visa I planned on getting. According to them, this is fine, and won't reappear again as some kind of red flag when I'm applying for new visas, and I won't be illegal.

They said, if I wanted to do the 90 day reporting, I could have conceivably extended my non B on the 30th another three months, but seeing as how i'm not working there anymore and my visa is tied to that job, there is no point in doing that. They said you have the option of paying the fine, which through their magic can be reduced to 1000 baht, and is of no real use to me; or just letting it go and getting a new visa after the 30th.

My coworkers, many of whom have been here longer than I have, seem to think this makes sense. I guess it makes sense to me too, but I have never really heard of people skipping things like this. Has me a little bit uneasy. I'd hate to get to a border and all of a sudden have to pay some massive fine for failing to show up to my reporting.

Anyway, any confirmation about whether this is true or not, or any other insight on the issue would be greatly appreciated.

  8. Thanks,

I just know that this agency asked for my passport and said they needed to make copies of it plus my current visa. So i wasn't sure if a change in the visa would somehow upset the flow of documents.

I am really not concerned with the work permit at the moment. My job is going to handle all of that. Right now they're going to get me a non b for 90 days then the work permit process will come later. I just wanted to know that me, now, waiting to receive the documents I need to take to Laos for the non b will not be upset if I go to Cambodia for a 15 day visa on arrival.

From you it sounds like it doesn't, and I don't think it will matter.

  9. So I've got a job that will be turning my tourist visa to a non b then work permit . However, my tourist visa is going to run out before i get the documents for my non b. I don't want to pay 500 baht a day overstay so i was thinking about just doing a border run. But I am worried about is that since I will be officially ending my TV and I am not sure whether or not this will affect the processing of my non b. Such as, If I go to Laos, and they say "this non b derived from a tv but you have a 15 day on arrival stamp (or whatever). We can't process this."

I'm hoping that would just be beaurachratic nonsense that will be ignored or disregarded and I would continue on with my non b as usual.

Anyone have any info as to what might be the case?

  10. I'm in the exact same situation except my first was a double entry from my country and then a second double entry from Laos. I leave tomorrow for Laos with an agent but they warned my chances aren't so good of getting another double. I will post here and let you know what I get. Apparently Savanakhet is more friendly now then Vientiane so you can try going there, I believe I am going to Vientiane though.

Cool man, let me know how it goes. I will be leaving from Chiang Mai. How much farther is Savanakhet from Vientiane? Or I guess how much of pain in the ass would it be to get to from Chiang Mai?

  11. So it's that time again.

I'm trying to figure out the best way to go about this. I've got two tourist Visa's in my passport already. The first one is a single entry that I got from the embassy in Washington, DC. The second one is a double entry I got from Vientian. The double entry is about to expire and I need to go back and get a third one.

I've heard this is when things start to get tricky, so I'm trying to get some kind idea as to what my odds are for obtaining another 2x entry visa and what, if anything, I can do to maximize the probablility of getting it.

Are they more likely to give it you if your tourist visa was obtained from other places? As in my first was from the US and I've only got one from Laos so far. I've heard that "touts" can increase your chances. What are those exactly? Are they the guys hanging around outside the building who will go in and do it for you? Last time I was there, some people asked to do it for me, but I didn't trust handing over my passport to some random guy on the street. He also asked for quite a bit of money.

Anyway, I'm getting pretty nervous about doing this so any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

  12. I will be going for my second. I got my first one at the Thai embassy in Washington DC. I thought about doing this before, but I wasn't sure what kind of process they used. At the embassy in DC, which I assume is their official embassy, all they did was look at the info to make sure it was there.

Does it make a difference how many times you've come in, or how many tourist visas you have? Also what do they want to hear generally when the ask why you want to stay in Thailand? They asked me this for my extension. The real reason is I'm currently photographing the country and training muay thai, but is there a specific answer they're looking for? Like "I'm here to spend money at your hotels, go to your resorts, eat at you expensive restaurants and essentially dump my wallet out into your cities?

  13. So I need some information concerning my upcoming attempt to get a tourist Visa in Laos.

My number one question has to do with my plane ticket. My current TV ends November 7th, and plane ticket also leaves that day. I have currently no extensions left. I plan to go to Laos this weekend by bus or train, I don't know which one yet, and apply for a new tourist visa.

Now I know they say you need to provide a plane ticket out of the country to get a tourist visa, and I know that they don't always ask for it when you apply, but I need to know what to do about my plane ticket. My plan was to go to Laos, see what I could get as far as Tourist Visa's go, and then change the date of my flight accordingly.

So if I'm applying for a double entry, and they see my current flight leaves on the 7th, obviously much earlier than date granted for my intended stay, is this going to be an issue? Will they not grant me a double entry TV if they see my flight is leaving on the same date of my current visa's expiration? And if I was to apply only for a single visa would the same issue apply? Would they want to see a flight departure farther out? Would they wan to see an entirely new ticket? Would it be a good idea to change my flight out ahead of time, THEN go apply for the tourist visa? I would like to avoid doing this as changing flight schedules is expensive.

    Other questions

Does anyone have a link to the document requirments? As I remember, it was passport, bank statement, address, plane ticket, photos, and 1000 baht.

Is it better to get to Vientiane by train or by bus? Given the flooding, would one be a better option? If I go by bus, which I heard is quicker, where can I book my ticket? How long does it take?

    Look forward to hearing back.

  14. I came to Thailand on a single entry tourist visa with the intent on finding a job and getting a non immigrant b/ work permit. I have since found a job, but it's part time, and they can't offer me a work permit yet. My tourist visa will be officially finished November 7th- which includes the 30 day extension, so I have to figure out what to do in order to stay in Thailand.

My plan is to go to Vientiane Laos and apply for another tourist visa, but this time try and get a double entry. I have read that out of all the neighboring countries they are the most likely to grant double entry visas, but it is still not 100% that you will be granted one.

I have some questions then, first being: What factors contribute to whether or not you will be granted a double entry tourist visa, or denied?

What is the likely-hood of myself being granted one as I've only been in Thailand a little over two months?

    What documents are required?

Does the double entry require a plane ticket in and out of the country?

How long does the process take?

How far is Vientiane Laos from Bangkok?

Sorry if this is regurgitated information. I tried hunting it down on the forum/website, but couldn't really find what I needed.

    Hope to hear back.

  15. Ok, so it's definitely a better bet to head to Laos than Cambodia. First question: how long does it take to get there? Second: How long does the processing take? Three: is there anything specific that determines the "may" or "may not" factor in receiving a double entry tourist visa? I currently have only been in Thailand a little over two months and have not been anywhere else; I'm assuming that works in my favor?
