  1. IMHO the British Club is a truely aweful place - the sort of place that makes you embarrassed to be British (I was a member for 5 years). Dont ask me why?

The whole club is extremely grotty (meaning in need of renovation) and populated with just the sort of farang you dont want to meet. (In particular, it is the sort of place that Brits hang around whinging about Thais and Thailand - the sort of Brit farang who only have expats as friends).

ps. apologies to any members that my generalisation doesnt apply to.

  2. UBC has long wanted to bring in a tiered product offering.

The reason that pay tv operators like tiered product offerings is that they can use it to subtly increase prices (Sky TV is one of the experts at this). The extra 10 channels maybe rubbish at the moment but what UBC will do is gradually migrate some of their better channels to the platinum package. In other words next year instead of raising prices, UBC might move Cinemax and one of the Sports Channels over to the platinum package.

By the way, I am a big fan of UBC.

  3. Set it all up in a company. Then you can turf her out at anytime and all it costs is approx Baht15,000-20,000.Ask SunBeltAsia or Indo-Siam.

I have heard that some people have managed to set up a company for as little as Bt20,000 to own property but this has not been my experience. Please also note that the company must be properly audited on an annual basis and that you will incur additional annual auditing costs of at least Bt20,000. People have also run into problems with the Inland Revenue because you are operating a non-trading company (they want you to pay some VAT). There are advantages of the Company route particularly if you sell the property in the future - by selling the company you can save on transfer taxes.

In my experience, the company route is suitable if the land and property are valuable (say worth in excess of Bt10m).

A cheaper and simpler route is to say register the land in your wife's name and then lease it off her for 30 years. That way, if you split up, you will still own the land and the house for the period of the lease. Also, Foreign nationals may own a building (as distinct from it's land) and may register such transfer of ownership into their names at the local district office.

Apologies if I have simply repeated other peoples posts. I have not read the whole thread but I noticed that several comments were wrong.

  4. Just got back from Koh Samui.

There has been a massive influx of tourist s from Phuket and there is a huge shortage of girls - both farang and Thai.

The shortage of Thai chicks - especially as most of the Thai chicks in Samui are pretty grim - means there is a significant premium on farang chicks. Very much unlike anything I have seen elsehwere in Bangkok. Luckily there are a lot of cute ones but they certainly dont need to lower their standards in order to get laid.

The Green Mango and Soi Green Mango are definitely their major hangouts - but it is going to be hard work. (Maybe a better bet is to see and chat them up on the beach in sun tan time.)

  5. According to the guys at the Thai Elite website, the membership/contract would last a lifetime no matter what Government are in charge.

Don't lose sight of the fact that these same guys at the Thai Elite website had also made the claim that Elite Card holders would also be able to purchase land.

    I have got one.....

I bought it for (1) golf rights (2) Thai air benefits (3) airport service. I am a permanent resident so the visa is not a particularly big deal.

Would I buy one now, if I hadnt already got on. No.

My assumption when I bought it was that there was a high degree of political will behind it - esentially that while Thaksin was around the card program would be valid. I am not sure that is the case anymore.

(And before any comments. Yes, I do have more money than sense)

    PM me if you wish.

  6. I will tell you what I think.

I think Sister-in-law got caught with more than drugged up piss - Bt100k bribe is way over the odds for a BG failing a piss test.

Sounds to me like the police think that she is dealing and are investigating her to see whether she is unusually wealthy. My advice to you is to make sure your wife finds out exactly has happened - ask the sister-in-law and maybe get someone to cross-check her story with the police in Pattaya.

Once you know the real story, you will then be in a better position to decide what help you should give her (if any).

  7. Yeah got to agree with you about Mint Bar - great sound system.

Home to Thailand's only real internetional DJ - Nakadia (www.Nakadia.com)

Unfortunately she is in Europe at the moment and when I was in Samui last weekend there were less than a dozen people in Mint Bar both Friday and Saturday night.

What time were you at Mint Bar at the time, I went there three months ago and it was crowded after midnight. DJ Nakadia? She looks more like Isaan working girl than Inter DJ :o

She does doesnt she - but she is pretty wild when she plays. (You can also see from her website that she has well over 100 gigs in 20 odd countries a year.) In September she brought over Marco V to play in Mint Bar.

BTW I agree that DJ is one of the most overused terms in Bangkok - seems that virtually every unemployed farang refers to themselves as a DJ or part time DJ. These are the sort of DJs who if you buy them one beer, they will play whatever you want!!

As for Mint Bar, both nights I went passed there between 11.30 and 12.00 on the way to GM and then back past about 2.00am. Nobody around at all.

  8. By the way, if you go to Samui island, you can check out at Mint Bar, Soi Green Mango, Chaweng. This club is brilliant!

  9. Tabbrowser preferences also allows you to autorefresh any webpage every X seconds.

    AdvancedHighlighterButton highlights searches

Spellbound a spellchecker - pity more posters dont use it

  10. Look guys,

I dont know whether you are big into hip hop or just prefer 60s, 70s, 80s stuff - Pink Floyd, Eagles, Rolling Stones etc... but flaming stuff that you dont know much about and you are not into is pretty boring.

To me John Cleese's stuff on techno (a guy I respect a lot) just comes across as a piece by a sad old man - why do comedians become so unfunny when they get older?

To makes matters worse if you go to a club in Bangkok - you have a choice between 1. live band playing Thai songs with intermittent Limp Bizkit, Evernescence, Linkin Park songs; (2) hip hop clubs playing another black eyed peas number or (3) house/trance.

To be honest I am happy for you guys to discuss your rock classic bars - pink floyd, Led Zep etc.. Just leave us in peace to find some decent dance music.

  11. This thread is getting a little bit techy.

I dont know much about computers or about software but i do believe that 9 out of 10 people who download Firefox will find it 10x better than IE6.

Just try it - there is nothing to lose and everything to gain.

  12. Highwayman,

How do you get a page to auto-refresh with Firefox. I didnt think it had that feature (and I cant see any extensions available). I am new to Firefox so it is quite likely that I am just being thick.

  13. Hmmm I am risking going a little beyond my expertise here....

BUT both AIS and Advance have GPRS networks but maximum speeds are limited to about 35kps - slightly slower than a good dial-up connection but enough to get you a 5mb file in 10 minutes on a good day.

However, DTAC has just launched its EDGE network (Enhanced Data for Global Evolution) although I think it only works in Bangkok. You can buy a Sony Air Card for Bt14,500 and then the service is BT1,200/month unlimited usuage. Alternatively you can buy an EDGE capable mobile phone.

EDGE's theoretical maximum data is 247kps (I think) about 5 times faster than a dial up. Actual speeds might be a little lower.

  14. With all due respect francois, what is so special about firefox,I had it on my pc for 2 days and uninstalled it,Maxthon is much better.

hmmm have you tried the latest version 1.0?

    I think it is great.

    1. I love tab browsing

    2. I love the multiple home page

    3. It is fast

    4. Can be totally customised

    5. Is stable

    6. Is free

    7. Is not microsoft...

As far as I can see so far it has many advantages over IE6 and no disadvantages.

I love it.... and I am not a computer nerd.

  15. I am always interested in closing times.

This is how I read things at the moment in Bangkok.

Everyone is basically closing at 1.00am - with an overrun of between 0 and 30 minutes.

The exceptions that are closing at 2.00am:

    Various hotel clubs

    87

    Spasso's

    CM2

    Rivas

    angels

    Clubs in Zones

    Lucifer

    Forte

    others?

    Influence

    Narcissus

There are various after hours places but I havent included them. anyone add to this list?

  16. Dear all ladies out there. I am a single guy in his early thirties and i have been living in bangkok for 10+ years now. I had a Thai - Chinese girlfriend for 6 years but we broke up. I am mixed Australian-Italian-Thai and am well educated and currently an executive in a large company.

Looking for a nice girl , for coffee lunch.

    Sincerely Yours.

ERR how come trolls like this dont get flamed?

    Is it against the rules?

  17. Top of The Pops like that 'castles in the sky' rubbish....

    Thanks

    fw1,

    Apologies

When you mentioned Castles in the Sky I confused it with another song. Yeah you are right Lucifer probably plays that track every night.

Your basic problem is that 90% of Thais find the whole hard house/trance scene too difficult. They consider much of the music at Marine, Lucifer and Narcissus pretty obscure (who's Tiesto?).

You have to go to small and sometimes deserted clubs - DDM (KSR Fridays), Code, Downtempo, Ezze (RCA). Oh and dont forget Boom in Pattaya.

Looking at the Thai DJ club might help

  18. Insight/Jockstar,

Maybe you should get out more.

Ezze is a great Trance club - great DJs and sound system. It is about 100m from route 66. Here is a map (also features Code another good club).

    http://www.geocities.com/thaidjclub/

RCA has changed a lot. There are, of course, no teenagers cos teenagers cant go out to clubs.

The New Forte is located at one end of RCA and most of the other clubs are at the other end. Route 66 is still going strong but RCA, in general, is fairly deserted - the likes of Downtempo, Code and Ezze are for dance fans. You can now park your car no problem on the street in RCA.

You should probably expect a revival - RCA is in a zone, so Forte stays open until 2.00am. I expect other places to open soon.

  19. Does anyone know if anywhere plays decent hard house/ hard trance/techno late at night?

By this I don't mean Lucifers, Nana Disco, Marine and the likes, I mean the kind of stuff is difficult to buy and doesn't make it onto Top of The Pops like that 'castles in the sky' rubbish. They seem to put it on in Lucifers everytime I go in there.

After living in BKK for a few years I have given up searching. If anyone could help, I'd be grateful.

    Thanks

Ok I will give you a sensible reply.

(MOS closed last December, was replaced by double oo which closed on March 1st.)

To be honest I am a little bit confused by your 'castles in the sky' reference to Lucifer. I have never heard that song there. From 12.00 until 2.00 they basically play trance - popular stuff I will admit but hardly TOTPS. Basically Tiesto PVD Armin VB etc.

As someone else pointed out the best Dance/Trance club in BKK is Narcissus but dont go there any other time than the weekends (great sound system, layout, location, open until 2.00am). But again this is progressive trance similar to Marine and Lucifer.

If you are looking for more obsure hard house trance you will have to look further afield - Boom in Pattaya, DDM in KSR and EZZE in RCA would be my best bets. But, be warned they are not particularly popular.

Also look out for places that mix it up - Xcentrix (silom soi 4), Code (RCA), Downtempo (RCA)...
