  1. THANKYOU Samran. At last

I don't have a clue about Australian law. Never been there, or intend to.

I confess to being mischevious. My posting re the legal satus of Defacto are complete nonsense and DELIBERATELY SO.

To highlight the RUBBISH that is all too frequently posted. And that is also the view of Thai immigration. If the good Doctor doubts me see www.thaiimmigration.com.

Most topics could easily be resolved by a visit or phone call to immigration.

This site is a good and entertaining talking shop but for reliable advice look elsewhere.

How do we know contibutors have ever set foot in the country.

And for the good Doctors benefit I do know something about Thai immigration Law and have lived in Thailand for some time.

However I stand by everyhing I have said that relates to the specifics of Andrew Aich's case (except Defacto marriage which in his case was irrelevant).

  2. 30 day entry stamps are NOT extendanble which explains why they have a desk at Suan Plu specifically to authorise extension requests with a notice saying it's 1900baht! But hey, this is Thailand.

I have no idea how long you'd get but would back George's 10 days but be prepared to be refused. You'll forfeit your 1900baht

If you aren't already in Thailand I suggest you get a tourist visa then you'll have no worries.

  3. Wow. This is getting heavy. I don't think Mike is going to enjoy life in Thailand.

He needs to take a laid back attitude. Thai tax authorities couldn't care less about personal money from outside Thailand. They just want you to spend it.

    Savings.

Money earned in the previous tax year or earlier is deemed savings and can be transferred to Thailand free of Thai tax. .

Earnings for the current tax year transferred to Thailand are taxable but any tax paid on those earnings outside Thailand can be written off against Thai tax.

But who the ###### cares - the Thais certainly don't.

  4. Defacto marriages are accepted as a reason for allowing an australian to obtain a long term visa for a non australian. And fair enough.

But that is as far as it goes. It is not recognized as a legal marriage in the same way as common law marriages were or legal marriages are.

Defacto marriages have no legal status.

The term Defacto marriage is not a legal definition but a term used under regulations made by the minister as permitted in interpretation of immigration law.

I.e. it can be challenged in court, or if the minister considers that, to put it simply, the system is being abused he may prohibit the use of Defacto marriage as a reason for granting a visa without recourse to Parliament.

In practice I suggest chance of obtaining a visa for a Thai on these grounds is very rare.

  5. Because if you buy through this site you don't know what you're getting and if something goes wrong then tough.

buy from a shop and you"ll get a reconditoned machine _ maybe even an unused older model dumped on the market

something goes wrong then take it back and they"ll fix it

thais have something the west lost long ago _ reliable service

    i talk from experience

  6. Marshy,

Can we assume you haven't yet utilised the visa? If you may looks like you may already be on overstay

In your case money is not an issue.

If you come as a tourist you must leave after 90 days and re-enter. If you apply for an extension on this basis you will be denied and the visa cancelled.

If you find paid work as a dentist (unlikely - Thailand exports medicos not imports them) you will need to obtain a work permit and obtain a cat B visa. Chances of doing this in country in 90 days is zilch. So yes you must leave on or before 90 days then re-enter.

Or (and this is not facetious) are you intending to work up country offering your services free as a dentist? In this instance Immigration will give consideration to an extension to the 90 days as a voluntary worker but go talk to them as soon as you arrive.

No doubt the good doctor will correct me.

  7. Second hand computers are readily available in all cities in Thailand at giveaway prices. If there ain't a shopping mall near you go to your nearest city, ask any tuk-tuk or taxi driver or school kid over the age of 5. They'll know.

Buy from a dealer. More chance of getting a reliable one than through this site. Any dealer will take it to your house, set it it for you and instal all the latest pirated software.

  8. Can we assume you are resident in Thailand.

Try UPS. Worldwide organisation. You can collect from their nearest office - throughout Thailand. Safe and secure and reliable.

All Post Offices (you don't say where your mother resides) have reliable special recorded deliveries. Problem is you need to ensure the Anglicised version of your Thai address is spot on as delivery to worng address is a big problem in Thailand as postcodes are not used as we know them.

  9. Andre Aitch,

You have still not clarified whether or not you are Australian which will have a significant bearing on your partners rejection.

Hoepefully you can clear this up for the benefit of others in a similar futrure situation.

You confirm there is an age difference. By how much? This will influence a decision. Right or wrong it does.

As previously stated elsewhere the question of common law wife status is irrelevant because you are not applying for spouse visa or a visa with the intention of marriage.

And for the good Doctors benefit (I think he may be an OZ) De facto marriages are NOT recognised in Oz law.

  10. I now concede that, following the additional information supplied, it is unlikely any extension will be granted, and indeed it appears that an O visa should not have been issued. It would also suggest that the husband is working illegally here. But here I go again jumping to conclusions.

However I refute the good Doctor's assertion that I have previously jumped to conclusions. I merely gave THE CORRECT answer to the original question.

All too often in this forum contributors fail to answer the actual question asked, and thereby unintentionaly give misleading information.

Perhaps I should adopt the Doctors stance that everybody posting a question is an idiot. But I will not.

  11. Phone lines easy to obtain. Yeah, right. Maybe in the main farang ares of habitation.

Try telling that to the residents on the road whereI live (a major city).

2 houses are occupied by policemen who hve been waiting since I've known them. 2 YEARS.

I got one in 2 weeks but thats another story.

Mobiles cheaper??????? We'll have to disagree on that.

  12. Everything everybody has said since my last post is correct.

I suspect many consulates issue O visas too easily.

Yes, they can be issued for those seeking employment rather than having a formal offer of work. Yes, they can be issued for retirement or marriage without proof of income. And yes there must be many farangs who end up by having to leave the country. Shame.

But everybody seems to assume the girl/woman in question doesn't know or understand or cannot fulfill the requirements for extension. Patronising?

There are many sob storys and instances of genuine concern in this forum but I suggest the MAJORITY of people coming to Thailand to stay long term have no difficulties, know the score and have no problems with immigration or visa extensions.

  13. Reino,

    Trainee? Company?.

If the company is a research institute or related to a university you can obtain a I year visa in Sweden. Is it a Thai company? How is the scholarship paid. Could it be paid through the "company" as salary? Does the scholarship meet the Thai minimum income to thereby justify issue of a work permit?

What is the company and what at what are you training.

Like many posts in this forum you information is too vague to be able to offer specific advice

You need to talk to the visa section in Stockholm. They could be sympathetic and issue you with an "O" visa which amongst other things is for purposes which do not fit neatly into other categories. You would need to demonstrate that you are not doing a Thai out of a job or what you are doing will be of some benefit to Thailand. You will need supporting documentation from the Thai company.

  14. Dr,

Easy. On the same grounds the original I year visa was granted.

The responses in this post seems to assume Blakes friend is not aware of the requirements she must fulfil financial or otherwise. If there was not a reasonable chance of this the consulate would not have issued a one year visa.

Remember it is not the visa holder who started this post - it is a doubting friend.

Please Blake7. elicit more info from your friend. I am intrigued.

  15. Dr Pat Pong.

Indeed numbers beginning 01 are mobile numbers. I am implying it is risky to do business with someone who does not give a fixed line number or adress

Yes there is an acute shortage of land line numbers and many Thai rely on mobiles.

OK, you lose nothing by responding to the e-mail.

I suggest this could be a homeworking scam common in the west. You do the work and receive no money.

  16. I hate to disagree again with Lopburi3 but Blake7's friend is correct. Absolutely and definitely - providing the holder can demonstrate she is in fact utilising the visa for the purpose for which was issued.

Entering Thailand with a 1 year multi O (I exclude 0-A where the full 365 days are granted on arrival), the holder will initially be granted 90 days. The holder may then report within the 90 days to immigration where the stay can be extended to the full year. No need to exit the country. Extension is at immigration officers discretion.

Interesting to know on what grounds the visa was issued.
