  1. Hi did you find a Carrom board in Thailand?

Playing Carrom is one of the favorite pastimes for many youths and adults alike in India. I don't know whether farangs play or are even aware of it. I searched TV but did not come up with any results.

So, does anyone know whether this game is available for purchase in Bangkok :o ? Thank you.

  2. try

    http://www.bbqthai.com/

there used (?) to be a store selling those BBQ (and some locally made) in the small mall opposite to Central dept store, but I heard it is no longer there. I'm sure the store in BKK would deliver. They are not low end BBQ and the ones I have seen are much better than the ones at homepro, at a cost.... depends what your plans are with it

  3. I am not sure where to post this (so I'll try to cc to General). Anyway, I just received a brochure for a GPS car navigation system that is made by Garmin, a well known name in the GPS business. It operates in Thai or English...the street names and the voice directions. It retails for 48,000 baht. I have used one in America and it works beautifully. Though I usually drive a set number of places in BKK and up-country it would be nice to have this helper when I have to sail in uncharted waters.

Anyone familiar with this car navigation system....or any other one for Thailand?

The Garmin is much cheaper in Singapore due to the Tax in Thailand, example the etrex is only US90 dollars about 4,000baht here at the book shop is retails for abot 7 k to 8000baht maybe tax

you cna easily download the map for the garmin of thailand from the internet and it is free they have a few maps that can download for Thailand,

i have using a Garmin 4 for the last 5 years in Thailand and it is good , I can mark the spots, however no colour, but functional

We will e producign our own GPS in 6 months time,

    Hi

could you gie a link on ehrer to get the maps on the internet?

How to load them to the GPS?

    Thanks, Holm

  4. My first years licence is about to expire. Can someone please tell me what paperwork I need to take(doctors letter?) to get it renewed & can I do it a few days before expiry?

    Thank you

in Chiang Mai last year I went only with my passport, 2 picture (can be taken there, same place as photocopies) and the old licence. On the first floor right side counter, the lady told me which copies they want, did that at the stalls at the back of the building, then it is just about moving from counter to counter and waiting for a while (I was done in a total of one hour). And ask for the 5 year licence (500THB I think?). I found that afternoons (close around 3 or 3:30) are less crowded, but that could just have been that day.

I had to go back to get a duplicate (lost my licenec) a few month ago. Just brought passeport, pics and police report (for the lost licence).

    Good luck,

    Holm

  5. Could you provide a link or a reference for your list?

This what is said on their website:

ISAT has over 67 member schools offering a range of curricula from American, British and International systems.

The quality of education offered at the International Schools Association of Thailand’s (ISAT) member schools has been recognized by accreditation organizations such as the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and the Council of International Schools (CIS).

    http://www.isat.or.th/member_schools.asp

In your list 2 Chiang Mai international schools are missing: Grace & Prem. I'm quite sure that both are accredited and ISAT members. On the other hand there is at least one school on the list that is not accredired by its national (oversea) accreditation body.

The International Schools Association of Thailand (ISAT) released a list of accredited schools in Thailand on May 4. According to their document, there are 72 international schools in Thailand, 44 of which are members of ISAT.  Of those, only 22 are accredited by outside organizations. Some may be in the process of meeting the requirement to gain accreditation, and some may not have begun the process. Outside accreditation means the school has been audited and meets international standards.

  6. There seems to be a lot of misinformation and misleading second hand information around out there!

If you check on the IB website (www.ibo.org) you find that Prem is accredited for the Diploma (grade 11 and 12, including IB) and PYP (K1 to grade 6 (?)). It is on two lines.

As far as I can see interns are in addition to full-time teachers.

Regarding fees, besides significant discounts on the entrance fee some years ago, I am not aware of different fees being applied.

If some one is really interested, go and have a look and get first hand information.

  7. I sometimes go to Dentaland, near Grace Clinic (1 or 2 soi further away from the Amari). Similar prices than Grace and actually some of the dentists exercise at both clinics.

I would recommend to book well in advance if you have a specific requirement and even just for a check-up as some time you get an appointment only within a week or two. I think they have websites.

  8. I got one at Pantip in BKK, maybe 200 to 300 THB. Look on the web under ADSL filter to find out what you need (just to make sure you get the right thing, it is standard equipment for DSL in Europe). Good luck, let me know if you don't get it.

  9. Actually, maybe someone else can answer this, but in the states if you have DSL, you can talk on the phone at the same time you're connected, but here, it disrupts the connection. Any idea why? Because its (A)DSL?

Do you have a filter on your phone line?

  10. CMT,

I'm using a Claritel handset and make PC to phone calls on a TTT hinet connection. I'm using dialpad; I have tried the PC to phone from skype but no sucess so far. Have not tried PC to PC yet.

    Cheers, Holm

  11. Hi,

3 km around Carrefour does not cover a lot of Chiang Mai!! I live not that far from Carrefour and my TOT number is not in the coverage area.

TT&T is not perfect but much better than dial-up.

Good luck when you move here and smooth surfing :-)

  12. Got the first invoice for tspeed and was happy to see that they did not charge for April when the service was very unreliable. These days it is a little slow end of afternoon but otherwise pretty good.

  13. Hi grrr,

my experience with fastmail is not 100% satisfactory. When sending messages with large attachments (2 - 5 MB), the SMTP server disconnects or times out and the email is not sent. You get a notification, but the hassle of checking and resending is there. With the SMTP of hinet so far it seems okay.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks, Holm

  14. Hi, don't know a program, but you can try the following trick in Windows:

I took it from the Woody Windows XP Newsletter (more info at: http://www.woodyswatch.com/index.asp ), for delayed shutdown see second half.

    good luck

To create a Quick Restart icon on your desktop:

Right-click on an empty spot on your desktop

    Choose New | Shortcut

Where the Wizard says "Type the location of the item" type

    shutdown -r -t 0

(that's a zero on the end, and there are spaces between all the entries)

    Choose Next

In the box that says "Type a name for this shortcut" give it a name that you like. Personally, I call it "Quick Restart". Choose Finish.

Right-click on the new shortcut and choose Properties. Click the Change Icon button and change the icon to something that'll be hard to miss. You don't want to accidentally click this icon.

To test the icon, make sure no programs are running, then double-click on it.

To make a Quick Shut Down icon, follow the same instructions, but the shortcut command should read:

    shutdown -s -t 0

If you find that the icons are working too quickly, you can slow them down a bit by changing the zero on the end of the command. For example, the shortcut

    shutdown -r -t 15

Waits for 15 seconds before shutting off the machine. That may make you feel a little better about using these hair-trigger icons.

The -t switch is a "wait time" switch, and the number signifies the number of seconds Windows waits before it exits. If you leave the -t switch off entirely, and drop the number also, Windows goes out at a leisurely 30 seconds.

There's only one way I know to get Windows to call off the shut down - abort the shut down command, as it were. You can create yet another shortcut with the command

    shutdown -a

If you start a shut down and change your mind, and you can double-click on that new icon before the number of seconds in the -t switch tick off the clock, WinXP will quit the shut down entirely, and return to normal.
