  1. I'm sad to say that the dry ice experiment for styrofoam cooler didn't noticeably improve temperature..when compared to regular ice results….my son and i have worked on this project together,,he has left for the states..if anyone out there wants to collaborate with me…just let me know

You buy the beer I bring the Styrofoam Cooler

    and we can coolabeerate laugh.png

13 words , 14 typos, maybe I need to lay of the beerlaugh.png

will the ice chest be full of ice?

  2. problem solved…i drink a lot of beer anyways…before drinking ill place the ice cold beverages in the STYROFOAM ac to cool my room..when the beer gets warm ill pretend to be german and drink them

  4. I have personal items that I want to ship to France from Chiang Mai. Does anyone know the cheapest route?

Thailand Post? DHL? TNT? Boonma Cargo? It can take a few months to arrive to destination but I want to make sure the items get there. The weight is about 40 kg and it fits in a duffel bag (90 cm/35" X 41cm/16" X 41 cm/16"). All info you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

  5. I'm also in the process of sending personal items to Europe, and I'm looking for the cheapest and safest way to do it.

I've got about 35 kg of stuff I want to send out. Does anyone know how much it would be via registered mail with Thai post? The link above (http://www.thailandpost.co.th/home.php) doesn't give the dimensions of the boxes for the prices posted.

Also, has anyone used Boonma Cargo Co, Ltd?

Is it cheaper to use a shipping company (DHL, TNT, Boonma, etc) than Thai Post?

    Thanks!

  6. I do think it works just fine.

Just a bit messy and will only cool a small area.

Use dry ice rather than ice which is -78.5°C and doesn't leave a mess, nothing to clean up or drain afterwards. wink.png

I had that idea but then realised it would cause death.

I've put dry ice in my mouth and tumbled it around quickly to create "smoke" that i puffed out in smoke rings as a party trick..have been doing it for years…how does it cause death?…dry ice lasts a LONG time and may be exactly what is needed…i just don't get this death thing

  7. they have also raised their prices 25 percent AGAIN for non members and the caddies they force on you aren't trained like they were years ago..these new ones don't know the difference between a driver and a putter..Never bother to ask which way the ball will roll on a green..they are uncanny in their ability to be wrong…also NEVER let them keep score for you if scoring means anything…scoring shouldn't mean anything at gymkhana because the cricket games in fairways etc. leaves too many ball placement issues in the hands of the incompetent caddies…the golf course should only be played with the frame of mind that you are getting practice for the day you play a real golf course..its just a huge expensive driving range with a horrible menu

  8. OK, experiment finished.

Ice lasted about 6 hours but water was still cold and pushing cold air into 7 hours.

But, I don't think it's going to be feasible to cool your house, or even bedroom more than a little bit.

And it seems a bit dangerous when that cheap styrofoam cooler is full of cold water.

It is heavy, you can't pick it up, when you drag it across the floor to dump it, it tries to slosh out.

So, I spent $10 and had some fun, and will still probably take it camping once I get a solar panel to cool the tent at night.

Sorry Gypsy-rodeo. Maybe a small room, but you better have it near the bathroom so you can dump it easily.

I don't believe the frozen coke bottles are going to give enough cool temps like the block of ice did.

    I could be wrong.

    Good luck.

don't let heybruce see this post..but it will work on a camping trip for a tent?…any improvements you can think of for the next STYROFOAM ac prototype?thumbsup.gif.pagespeed.ce.dtxKiAJ9C7.gif

  9. OK, made a quick one this morning after going to a shop and buying 8" fan and 2 1/2 " elbow.

Found an old cheap cooler that I used.

Sitting here now enjoying some cool air blowing on me.

But, I want to get a solar panel as I have a 12V fan.

I want to use it for camping.

Will need a battery too I guess.

But, we love camping, it just gets too damn hot in Thailand much of the time.

    Thanks for the thread.

    My neighbors are already envious.

ps. bought a block of ice that perfectly fits the cooler for 20 baht.

Now, to see how long it lasts.

    IMG_4437.jpg

please let us know how long the 20 baht of ice lasts..ive found that cooling continues at close to same level for quite awhile after the complete melt because the fan air is hitting cold water..i love my STYROFOAM ac..ill never go back to the expensive ones

  10. When speaking of fans, how many Cubic Feet per Metre do you suggest and how much static pressure would you recommend?

Also would you recommend positive air pressure or negative?

I'm thinking of a triple fan design, your input would be welcome.

if you use multiple fans their combined pressure should be at least 104 pounds per square inch and a minimum torque of 8.96 newtonmeter.

    ermm.gif

That should give impressive results, especially if you pack the cooler with crushed ice. You will get an immediate cooling effect.

Safety tip: Don't stand too close to the cooler when you turn on the fans.

  11. C’mon chaps, give the guy a break. Although he’s a tad lost on the laws of thermodynamics, his heart’s in the right place and it’s a neat idea.

While of course if a fridge were used to make the ice, it will have to expend more energy (that there are frozen things in there already doesn’t mean it won't need to work again and consequently make more heat, ole bean), when compared with what the aircon needs to do to cool an entire room, it is a fraction of what this contraption + fridge output needs to do to cool one’s personal space. In addition, extra heat generated by the fridge would meld into the ambient, unless perhaps your digs is 6ft x 6ft.

Let’s throw some arbitrary figures out there, shall we: he might be using, for instance, 50Wh to cool himself as opposed to, say, 750Wh to cool the entire room to cool himself. But of course if the ice is free and he used a solar-powered fan (battery at night), then make that 0Wh. And, as correctly stated, it should not raise humidity much as, condensate aside, the water stays in the bottles.

Just a couple of points for those considering making one: Use a large 6 litre bottle to retain ice mass longer (though several smaller ones would likely make it colder faster). Suspend the bottle(s) slightly so air flow can get all around and also compartmentalise (easier when using one large bottle) so the air does a loopy loop. Also don’t use too big or voluminous a fan as it’ll probably push the ambient air through too fast, thus there’d be less of a cooling affect.

  12. To come half way around the world to go out with a Christian girl is to really not know the true meaning of Christmas! 15 years after my first trip here, I am still sympathetic to almost every Westerner hitting the hot spots with his western GF or wife. An old friend from college had been here visiting his father, who was working for IBM in BKK. He told me, Thighlander, I want you to do two things in your life...1) Visit Thailand 2) DO NOT BRING YOUR GIRLFRIEND WITH YOU! To this day that still stands as some of the best advice ever given to me.

once you go asian you will never go caucasian

  13. lots of great nurses on the evening/night shifts, same with flight attendants....the old battle axes get the day shift.

i know 4 people who ended up marrying nurses..the girls were younger,,good looking and didn't want to quit their jobs AND they spoke enough english to sort of make it work..a lot of thai girls have been so burned by thai guys that a foreigner is a great option to share expenses with..the key is to take it slightly slow and go the friend route for the first week to 10 days…start off sincerely just wanting to be friends..also "friends" aren't forced to go buy a shopping mall..this gives you time to figure it out…and if things work then get happily married

  14. a friend of mine gets more tale than a tuk tuk seat,,,he had a thai friend write in perfect thai " thailand is the greatest country in the world..i would love to learn to speak real thai..would you like to learn more english? lets get together and practice languages together ..please call..i would like to be your friend ( phone number )"…he went to the printer and had 1000 cards printed..every time he sees a girl he likes he hands the card to her while wearing an unthreatening soft semi shy smile…the card doesn't say woo hoo your sexy blah blah ..girls know where its going to lead..its classier..if they call meet up for a coffee..thats about as cheap as you can get away with i guess

  15. Great idea by Choko, thanks for posting I have been looking recently at a cooling solution before this years summer takes hold.

I am going to make one of these in a few weeks and have already thought about some improvements to the design.

Before I share them; antagonists please note:-

    1. My water bottles will be frozen FREE of charge.

    2. I only want to cool a very small room for 12 hours a day for a few days/weeks.

    Now for the improvements.

    1. I am going to fasten (double sided sticky foam) the Styrofoam box centrally on top of an 11" pan. The pan will be placed centrally onto a rubber mat on my record player, this will create enough headroom for me to leave the tonearm off it's rest, allowing the cooler to rotate and the air to circulate more efficiently. This requires a modification of the fan mounting so that the fan and its motor can rotate around the fan housing to avoid the cable getting tangled up, I will design that once I have the fan in front of me.

    2. I will also add salt to the water as this lowers the freezing temperature of the water which will increase efficiency by allowing the bottle to stay nearer to zero celcius once melted than ordinary water would.

    3. Cut a hole in the ceiling so the hot air that is lighter than cold air has somewhere to float up through

    Benefits:-

Better air circulation than 1st design model

Cooler stays colder and for longer

You know exactly what’s in it, environmentally safe salt and water, no mysterious chemicals or gases like a commercial air conditioner uses

chiang mai is now the epicenter of a scientific renaissance …unbelievably brilliant….turn the player up to 78

  16. What many unbelievers are not considering is the gains in efficiency obtained by the use of Styrofoam , combined with the containment of the liquid medium in Coke bottles thus significantly reducing the humidity conundrum.

This system could be made even more efficient by a couple of simple modifications.

Firstly a hole roughly the size of your refrigerator could be busted out you your wall. and the refrigerator backed in to it , expelling all heat made in the creation of ice Coke bottles outside the domicile. Further more I propose using Coke-Zero bottles for the containment of liquid medium. The reduced caloric content of Coke-Zero will further decrease the heat exchange coefficient resulting in huge efficiency gains, and aiding in the air purification process.

Please PM me for a set of inexpensive plans and picture tutorial.

GENIUS …wow..kicking myself because of not thinking about giant hole in the wall..i bet you have a pocket full of epiphanies..share w/ me brother..im all ears

Well I never heard it called that but if you put your hand in my pocket I am sure you will find an epiphany laugh.png

    bwahahahahahhaa..fell over :)
