  1. got plenty laptop over the last 20 years.

I still have a compaq with stylus that I baught in 92. still working, but unusable by today's standards.

got a Dell high end inspiron (125K baht) that lasted 2.5 years, motherboard fried.

got a fujitsu siemens that lasted 9 month, motherboard fried.

have 2 Sony Vaio, one is 4 .5 year old and still working fine, but the screen hinges could not bear my son's handling. The other one is 2 years old and ok but dvd out of service (doesn't open anymore).

got an Acer that lasted 18 month, gpu fried.

Had a Samsung that lasted 18 month or so, can't remember what happened with it.

Had a toshiba that I gave to a nephew after 1 month, cause I did not like it at all.

Have a samsung netbook (nc 10) still working 24/7, even though it got serious beating from my 4 years old kid.

Had a few other that I don't remember, but for sure they did not last more than 18 months.

Now I have a MSI. Definately the best machine I ever had. 15" full HD, 1 ssd OCZ 128GB, 1 HD seagate 750 GB 7200 rpm, 16 Gb ram, 2 Gb amd GPU, 2 external monitors plus the laptop screen, 3 USB3, 1 USB2. Only draw back, it's a bit bulky and heavy, but that is nothing when compared to graphic capabilities.

Don't know how long it will survive, it's only 3 months old.

My business partner went through a bunch of Acer,Asus,HP,Compaq and have had plenty problems with them. Now he is on a Macbook, but says it's not worth the price.

  2. Thanks uwe_rayong. this is exactly the info I was looking for.

I was trying to find my way through customs tariff on the same site you mentionned but did not reach the proper code yet. I was at 84.70...

    Thanks digitalbanana.

I had a look and it is pretty interresting if you can combine (consolidate) shipments.

For a single laptop you save something like 50USD (which in itself is not bad).

But you have to pay import duties and vat.

found another model, slightly different(15" instead of 17") available at lazada.com for 37900THB, POD, free shipment.(but DOS not win8, so including a genuine win7 it goes to 42500THB)

For that same model (15") from EU:

    835Eur(tax free)+120Eur (shipment)+20%(duties)+7.5%(VAT)=1231 EUR or 52000THB at today's rate.

    From USA 1200USD(tax free)+110USD(shipment)+20%(duties)+7.5%(VAT)=1858USD or 59000thb at today's rate.

Conclusion of all of that, for the laptop I want, buying in thailand is cheaper than either EU or USA.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestion and information, has been very valuable and will be used again in the future

  3. Only 500 baht? You'd risk a big import duty for that?

I don't know what country you're ordering from, but I'd sure as heck order it from the US to get the best price if I was willing to risk duties.

I'd contact one of these guys about shipping to Thailand. (or first choose a different brand/model) LINK

    Thanks for your comment,

follow it, I just checked about 20 supplier from the US.

I would loose about 5000thb on the same model, and still face the import duties risk

  4. Since I can't find the laptop I want in the country, I am planning to order one from europe and get it shipped here.

However, I am scared of import taxes.

As I buy from Asia, I will pay it tax free, which is good. Put on top the shipping, it is still 500 thb cheaper than if I baught it here.

Unfortunately, I have no idea how much I risk to pay on import duties, and knowing the officials from this country, I am pretty sure that it can go to a nice amount.

Anyone with info on the subject?

  5. I am looking specifically at a few models from MSI because they are the only one (to my knowledge) to offer the possibility to connect 3 external monitors in extended mode at full HD.

Update about my order with tohome: got a phone call this afternoon from tohome. They told me they were out of stock. This I knew already since I called them before placing the order and was told they would order it for me. But today I was told that they had to cancel the order because they could not order it themselves...

I am now considering buying in europe. Do anyone have any information about import duties on laptops?

  6. Before any one jumps on me, I have tried all the online shop mentionned in the pinned post.

2 days of research for no result at all.(even tried Singapore and malaysia)

Some online shops pretend to be resseler, but have nothing to offer, other do not reply to email and than some start replying and than just forget about you...

Since I am living on a remote island, I have no other possibilities than going online.

Do any of you know any reliable shop that sales MSI laptops?

Or can anyone recommend another laptop that supports at least 2 external monitors in extended mode at the same time, with a min reolution of 1920*1080?

    thanks in advance

  7. Got the same problem.

    easy to fix:

from the firefox tab on the top left select "help" then "troubleshouting information"

in the newly opened tab click on "reset firefox" on the top right of the screen.

    And voila.

bookmarks, history and so on are still there.

  8. I just took a look at the site, and it appears to be yet another schizophrenic site that is half in Thai and half in English, with no way to switch to an English only version (unless I missed it).

Anyway, good to hear you had good customer service experience and all went well.

use google chrome instead of firefox or ie (which should be banned from any pv) and you get automatic translation from any langage within a second...

  9. Opened this morning (31st).

This is a BigC market, smaller than the standard big C.

Some import from france, like cheese, delicatessen...

Meat looked good and fresh, fishes as well.

All together they are not in the same league as tesco, the shop is clean (even though it was full this morning)

No KFC nor Mc Doclap2.gif and no food court.

if they keep it like that, tesco has to worry about it's futur

  10. I agree with Taco.

As long as you do not do any business that is already operated by Thais you will be OK.

I have 3 different businesses on the island for the last 10 years and never got any problem.

If you want to do something that is sea related, renting some space in a resort is your best option.

As mentionned above, you need to create a co ltd, with at least a capital of 2M thb and employ 4 thais to be able to get 1 work permit, 4M thb and 8 thais for two work permits.

Since the island is still pretty cool, there is not much control about these theoretical conditions.

    I am also in watersport.

Since you want to do something that do not exist yet, feel free to pm me for further discussions.

  11. I have a restaurant and a web design company in koh pha ngan.

I lost about 100 000 thb during this power outage.

We lost the content of the freezers, no customers at all since most of them left the island.

I went to surrat to buy 2 generators, knowing that if it happened once there is a lot of chances that it will happen again.

major problem was the lack of information and all the rumors going around.

I heard this afternoon that there will be power shut down tomorow again... For how long?

I dont care anymore, I have my generatorswhistling.gif
