I agree. Phuket is the most expensive.

You pay top dollar to live/holiday here, and get second rate facilities, that seem to be getting worse, in return.

Phuket is fast losing what little value for money it had.

Certainly, your quality of life/holiday is effected by the lack of infastructure and the corruption.

    Hi all veterans of phuket,

Which place in thailand have equally nice beaches and lower cost of living, i would like to learn from you guys.

Please kindly share....i'm interested to know.

A Simple guy looking for nice beaches.....for some snorkerling, fishing catch&release, lazing by e beach, cheap thai food.

Can PM me.....can treat you guys simple lunch/dinner, coffee, ciggie no problem.wai2.gif

  3. You have a very nice bike there........is it honda steed 400cc??

It's a Honda Phantom 175cc 2 stroke. I bought it for 30,000 baht over a year ago. Would not sell it at the price I got it for. Thats what I mean about "frugal".

    Nice bike......good price also.thumbsup.gif

I think is 150cc honda phantom my fren used to ride when giving me a lift back to camp about 12yrs back.

He mentioned this bike can go about 350km before e next refill at a crusing speed 70km/h.

    Nice backrest and comfy seat.wai2.gif

  4. We are a family of 3. Son is almost 3.

    Current spending:

    Rent, electric, internet, water 20,000

    Car payment and gas 10,000

    Kindergarten 11,000

    Groceries 7000

    Eating out 7500

    Insurance 6000

    other stuff 5000

minimum spending is 70,000 per month, could not live on less than that.

Try cutting down on groceries/other staff and gas ....i think you can shave another 10,000thb.

You might consider modifying your car to run on LPG gas instead of gasoline, KL taxi driver mentioned total savings of about 40%

compared to normal gasoline after conversion.wai2.gif

There has been quite a few serios incidents with LPG tanks blowing up in Thailand, faulty fittings and shoddy workmanship are the main reasons, I wont be risking my life with LPG to save a few satangs

    Thanx for sharing.wai2.gif

  5. Interesting topic. It might be more interesting to see how much you can save in the bank, at the end of each month. For me, I my savings average 30,000 baht. I think that is pretty dam_n good. It is the challenge of frugal (but not low-class) living that makes my life more interesting. Yes, I take my gal out to dinner once a day, and "do the town" about 4 times a month (discos, dancing, live music). We rent a large old house and have not credit payments. Also fly to the Philippines 3 times a year and once a year to the States. After settling in (took a year or two) I can now relax and have enough in the bank for emergencies. In about 3 years I could pay up front for a new car. (Now have second hand truck and bike). Its a good life so far.

You have a very nice bike there........is it honda steed 400cc??

Air tickets is a drain especially if you like travelling........yes hopping around from country to country does make your life more interesting and fun.thumbsup.gif

  6. All this talk is about Russian tourists.

Excuse me if I'm guilty of thread-drift here but there are more and more Russians moving to Phuket.

My wife works for a family of them and so does 3 of her friends. (Same family)

So, there's one family supporting 4 Thai people right there.

She tells me they shop at Central, Villa Market, and sometimes Tesco.

I know these are mostly foreign owned places, but, aren't we all a little guilty of shopping there?

    Leave them alone folks.

They were brought up different than you or I.

Ok, they don't smile a lot, and are a bit rude. But hopefully they are learning about respecting other cultures.

Something many of us could do more of also.

And, their women look pretty good in a bathing suit. (been to the beach lately?)

I find them quite friendly at my karon condo estate, they speak some english.

One of them even taught me ways to strengthen my abs muscle.

I think it is e langauge barrier and culture differences, once you get to know them....i would say they are more outspoken and fun loving.wai2.gif

Cutting down on 7,000 Baht per month groceries for a family of 3?

groceries and others total = 12,000thb

I think it is easy to shave at least 40% of that amount......no?

On other areas thaibutty did a very good jobwai2.gif

  9. Quote " The cheapest tourists we get are Singaporean, Hong Kong-Chinese, and Indian. You cannot compare the Russians with them in terms of spending."

Simply put thailand don provide e place we chinese love to spend on.Try building casinos, race course track in phuket...........you will see billions of sgd, hkd, ringgit, rmb gushing into thailand yearly.

Take a trip to casinos in singapore, macau ,malaysia, observe what is the total stake on e baccarat table per game.

20,000thb is alot??...........to me is an insult to e thai waiters.

I would rather e thai waiters dump back e money into his face.................and ask him to get lost.

I donated easily 8 times tad amt buying rice, cooking oil, biscuits, pampers....etc to old folks home, orphanage in my home country yearly.wai2.gif

  10. Thanx for sharing........How much is the coffee?wai2.gif

I buy whole fresh roasted beans at Hock Hoe Lee. It 195 Baht for 250 grams. Good stuff!

Thanx for sharing..........where is it located?

    Phuket town?

195 baht is nothing compared to freshly brewed coffee early in e morning together with a ciggie........ best combo.thumbsup.gif

  11. I dont mind Thai or western food, whatever I am craving at the time. But I am careful to study the cleanliness of a lot of Thai run restaurants, the hong nam is a key indicator, no soap and a squat toilet with a plastic sauspan and I am out the door after my first beer

Not true, i grew up in a kampong setting in malaysia since young. The above mentioned settings is a norm.....at least there is a flushing system. which is good.tongue.png

I went china shandong weihai......next to Qingdao to visit a fren........... he mentioned he grew up in a kampong settings - the toilet does not even have flushing systemw00t.gif .....Can you imagine e stench coming out from e shithole??facepalm.gif

I visited them during last yr winter time......... so i can say is smelly, cold n shitty.wai2.gif ......the toilet sux.

However, e mum cook very nice seafood and make very nice dumplings..........weihai is famous for seafood as it is near to e coast.

I can have live small abalone for $2.....bigger abalone for $10...scallop, daizi,

$20 1kg praying mantis prawn, stir fry with chili........e taste is best.wai2.gif

  12. 75% thai

    15%% chinese

    5% korean

    5% western

Looking for japanese restaurants for some authentic japanese food.

    Anyone care to share?wai2.gif

Oishi in index is pretty good for an all you can eat buffet, I think it might be out of your price range at 600thb/head

Thanx for sharing....600thb is indeed out of my range.

I guess i have to turn to home-made meal.

    Saw this site .....look interestingwai2.gif

  13. 2 meals a day for me in thailand@2 thai street stall....if phuket town is 35thb a meal, in karon 40thb a meal.

1 in the morning and another one dinner.....or

    1 lunch and 1 supper

about 130thb on meals + supercheap coffee home + ciggie if stay put in karon condo...swimming and gym free.

I find it is more of individual preferences.......if you are used to spending 50,000thb a mth, you would spend around tad amt naturally without you realising.

If you are used to spending 12,000thb a mth, you too would spend around tad amt naturally without you realising.

I'm more interested in knowing how to spend 6000thb a mth in phuket per mth.wai2.gifcoffee1.gif

  14. Patong ist not Phuket/Thailand.

Living on 50.000/month was quite easy 5 years ago. Now it more near 70.000 these days.

Plus insurances and visaruns every 3 month aprox. 20.000/month.

    Thai Food/fruits 3500 and gym?cheesy.gif

    You mean too high??

It can be lesser but tad will be forgoing one of my fav fruits durain.wai2.gif

I know alot of local thai spend lesser than i did....cause they share accommodation cost, split water&electric bills, hm cook ...ride bike to work....etc.

Swimming is available up on MT taishan but the water quality is bad, chinaman seems fine with it diving in...swimming around with ease.wai2.gif

  16. i always find it amusing that Mansion is Phuket for shit hole. i haven't noticed that anywhere else.

    Chung King Mansions Hong Kong!

I stayed there last yr 2012 for 10 days.

I got cockroaches climbling out from the disused wall socket......after pushing in e luggages you can hardly walk.

However for that price in HK about $100 per nite for 4 pax and good location......not much complaints.wai2.gif

HK is a expensive place to play, spent about 6k 4pax in 10 days simple HK street food and minimal shopping.coffee1.gif
