Yesterday I flew from Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok but Thailand refused me entry because they said I have had too many visas already. They gave me expulsion agreement to sign and put in the detention room. Yesterday the representative of the airline with which I flew here met me and told me that they will be transporting me back to Kuala Lumpur today. Later I spoke with them on the phone and they said the ticket was confirmed. But 'yesterday' arrived and today the reception of the detention room are telling me that the flight is tomorrow but they are not telling me what time.

Look @Zhanna, it was a good try. It's just you forgot how many days you spent in detention.

First, you told us you arrived on 13th, then when other posters commented Royal Jordanian flies on the 12th, you changed the story.

I wish you the best of luck, but I will disregard everything that has been posted on this thread by you.

I strongly advise readers to do the same.

And I do wish to know also, how much they paid you for this story.

Who are you referring to when mentioning  how much was paid? I am so confused right now...

  2. HI everyone, on a biz trip out to bangkok for next week, usually just use the cars that the hotel has on offer, but company has leased an apartment as we predict that we will be doing more business in thailand. Any help or info on which companies the smaller hotels that dont have in-house motor pool would be greatly appreciated. Wont need the car the whole day 3-5 hours a day at most. Usually pay 1500 baht an hour or less with 3 hour minimum when staying at hotels. Please help, there is no way that I will be able to drive, and I would prefer not to be going to dinners and meetings in a cab.

  3. The Japanese and Koreans look down on all other asians. Per capita, they are the 2 most prosperous asian countries. They are also amongst the lightest skinned asians. I would say Korea is more xenophobic, just not a very hospitable country to strangers generally. My opinon is that they look upon other asians and to some extent farangs as sub-humans. Of course there are exceptions to this, but for the most part I think this is pretty accurate. Not only do the KOR/JAP think they are better than SEA's but the Thais and other SEA's seem to perpetuate that by being so ###### deferential to the KOR/JAP's. Granted many Thai's show deference to anyone with a coupe thousand baht, but within their own hierarchy of racial status, me thinks they place them above even farangs. This could be due to the fact that for the most part, the JAP/KORS you see in Korea are mostly more affluent whether they are tourists or business people while often the sterotype of the farang is a sloven backpacker or a dishevel sex tourist.

  4. I think for the money the Conrad hotel is the best. Although president solitaire is bigger, I dont really think the location is all that great unless you are a fan of soi cowboy and nana plaza. Conrad has the most beautiful contemporary thai interior design and a pretty amazing shower that can has multiple shower heads one being a height adjustable shower head and the other being a ceiling adjusted rain shower that is pretty amazing. The wall between the bathroom and bedroom is made out of transparent glass with a motorized curtain that can be opened/closed by the press of a button from either the outside or inside. The hotel is less than 2 years old, and since the elevator is accessed by your room key card, you have far less of the riff raff coming to visit their balding, bloated, and overaged male european "friends". My girlfriend and I work in the CRC tower, so it is easy to go both to work or visit her at her office. I didnt think I had anything against bargirls until my last trip, let me correct myself, I dont have anything against bargirls, just rude (typically) fat, (Typically) old, (typically) white guys that cant get a girl in their native country, and so they all seem to come to Thailand. You dont see nearly as many of these people as you would at president solitaire or JW Marriot. I am saying this out of experience, since I have stayed at Intercontinental, JW, Sheraton, Conrad, President Solitaire, 4 seasons, Shangri-la, and the Oriental in the past year with at least 3 days in each. The service though is somewhat lacking at the Conrad, but excellent at the Intercontinental. I just got transferred to Bangkok, so I am now living in the Conrad Mansions (serviced apartments) and I love it. I am close to everything and I couldnt ask for more in their facilites (tennis, swimming, yoga). Good luck - there are alot of great places, but alot of crap places too!

  5. Not writing to criticise anyone's socioeconomic status nor do I believe there needs to be any justification for wanting to travel to BKK. Having said that:

The three guys in my office that are heading off to BKK are dreading the business trip... They are staying for 2 weeks, in 8000 baht a night hotel rooms, with almost 40,000 baht per day per person in allowable discretionary expenses, with drivers, and extremely easy work schedules. The main complaints are that Thailand's humidity is almost unbearable for the guys who are coming straight from San Diego, that the city is dirty, that the tourists sometimes/often behave in a manner that would be considered reprhensible in their native countries, the dramatic divide in social classes, etc...

I dont think these most of these problems are ones which Thailand has the ability for all practical purposes to remedy, unless they can somehow repostion the equator, give everyone a couple million baht and force them to save it, reorganize there infrastructure from bottom to top (not top to bottom)

People of real means from my personal experience, head to places that cater to them: Virgin Islands, Monte Carlo, Alps.

Having read that many farang live in Thailand on 40,000 baht is a shocker, I know it is possible, but it is somewhat hard to believe that there are that many people living on less than that.

My advice, get a good education, make 40,000 baht a day and go wherever you wanna, to ###### with govt instituted tourist objectives!

  6. Does anyone know what the average salary is for a starting attorney in Thailand?

The law firm I work for is doing an ever increasing amount of business in Thailand, and I heard some talk that we are in the process of acquiring a Thai law firm. It seems with the economic and income differences between Thailand and USA, when our US attorneys head to Thailand for business, there might be a huge income disparity between the locals and the US attorneys. Our law firm bills 275.00/hour but most of that is retained by the firm and its revenue sharing partners, associates only make a fraction of that.

  7. Hello all,

I just bought 3 quad band motorola v551 mobiles for three members of our law firm heading out to Bangkok. These phones were released in the USA approximately 2 weeks ago. They work on EDGE technology rather than GPRS (I couldnt explain what either of these terms mean in detail)

Taking into consideration that in general, the newest mobile phones make their debuts in asia far earlier than in USA, does anyone have a solid answer regarding the abilities of cell phone sellers in BKK (MBK) possessing the ability to unlock these phones yet.

I also purchased three Motorola bluetooth headsets for these phones and although I dont see any technical issues with operating bluetooth due to geographic location, are there any statutory limitations regulating the use of Bluetooth and/or the frequency it operates on? If I am not correct, I believe I read even wi-fi is "technically" not legal, or maybe just that no legislation exists regarding wi-fi usage.

As always, those with genuinely helpful advice are greatly appreciated

  8. You know what, I just read my original post, and I state that my mentor/boss's girlfriend can't go because of the NFL footbal season... No she is not a Defensive lineman or anything like that (lol), she is a cheerleader for the team. Not really a material issue but for those football fans that might be scratching their heads about that one!

  9. dugdig,

Very appreciative! I ended up shipping a box full of your standard commercial published tourism reference material directly to the Intercontinental Hotel so that they will be there when he arrives.

I Organized and printed a spiral bound quick reference guide essentially cutting and pasting information to MS word from various internet links sorted (per your suggestion) by categories, distance, and methods of available transportation.

It appears our law firm has some sort of Thai "black card" (maybe similar to Amex Black card) account with the govt of thailand that provides very thorough assistance with any questions/problems he might encounter.

Your absolutely right about going the extra mile on presentation, it makes all the difference... even if your dad is the boss's boss' boss!

Now if I spent as much time figuring out this guys Thai trip as I did on studying for the bar...

  10. I originally posted this in the wrong topic - Some people thought I was going to BKK as well but I am not accompanying them on the trip so any suggested plans I might have for him have to be taken care of here. Thanks!

    Hi all!

I am a 3rd year law student, and I work as one of many lowly legal assistants in the San Diego offices of one of the largest law firms in America (Not quite Baker Mackenzie, but I think we make more moolah!) Anyways, we have 3 attorneys leaving for a BKK business trip on 12/14 - 12/27. The way the Thai clients have it set up, they scheduled sporadic meetings throughout the duration of the business trip, but there will be 2 periods (of 3 days each) in which my boss will have all to himself. Although the 2 other lawyers have made it clear that they will concentrate on partaking in, shall we say (I am sure every euphimism has already been exhausted on this forum) more "erotic" pursuits.

My boss and his g/f have made it sufficiently clear that he would like to steer clear of the adult entertainment centers. I (stupidly) told him that I had been to BKK a couple times in the past 2 years, but I didnt visit one cultural landmark, ######, the only 2 places I went were siam square and sukhumvit. So, I am in kind of a bind... He asked(directed) me to provide some suggestions. If anyone can contribute (I know there are many of you!), than here are some helpful factors to take into consideration:

1.He is 28 years old - Japanese/American - Speaks English as first language, but he can speak Korean near perfect, and passable Japanese? - This is just from what I overhear foreign clients. - So if the language competency helps in finding a foreign tour group/ program (NOT BACKPACKERS) more along his style that would be great.

2.He will be travelling alone, his g/f has to finish out the football season [GO SAN DIEGO CHARGERS!!!] (NFL - American Football) hopefully getting to the Superbowl! And therefore will not be available.

3.Due to time constraints planes would be the preferred method of transportation (over buses, trains, automobiles)

4.For practical purposes, money will not be a material issue . (Due to the forced overseas placement during Xmas, our firm has been extremely generous providing a per diem [billed to client? I wonder] of $650 - 29,000bt? (Good lord! Me and my 3 friends comibined. culd definitely could have done some damage with that kind of coin in 2002!)

I was thinking Chiang Mai, or Koh Samui, but if the scene in those areas has gotten hectic and lost its charm, that probably wouldnt be appropriate.

Also the firms travel dept booked him at the InterContinental in Erawan for the whole trip (another hotel that I as a backpacker only saw from the skytrain essentially), but he would prefer a quiter setting with (relativly) quick access to Siam Square. (This might be a pipe dream).

Guys, I am so sorry that I have taken so much time on this, but it's cause I procrastinated till that last minute, and I need to have a choice of interesting outing suggestions by tommorrow 10:00 a.m. (pst). Hey let me just thank all those that contribute to this forum to make it one of the best sources of practical and contemporary information resources regarding all thing Thai on the net!
