I would say the main problem Koh Samui has is the continuing monopoly of Bangkok Airways, resulting in absurdly high air fares. If Koh Samui was easier and cheaper to get to, then I'm sure there are are many resident expats and Thai tourists who would be happy to visit. For myself, for every trip we have made over the past 9 months I have checked the airfares to Samui and, seeing the high prices, chose to go somewhere else.

How is that recovery even possible when the rest of the people in the world like the USA, the UK et al are in desperate financial straits, and are in no position to travel even if they could?
The return of airline industry is not going to be quickly accomplished if at all.
Bearing these factors in mind, how is this return of tourists to any SE Asia country possible...
Even if an effective safe vaccine is found.... it will be months if not years before safe travel willl be possible.
