  1. I have used China Airlines via Amsterdam and they were fine, I used economy from Heathrow to Amsterdam which helped keep the cost down as you only paid the lower departure tax from the UK, though I don't know if you now pay a higher charge from Holland.

I booked via Airline Network and as far as I know you can still do so in the £12-1300 region.

  2. First of all I am sorry to hear about the loss of your friend, then I will add to the suggestion by dotcom that your friends family need to seek urgent legal advice.

My understanding, from another forum, and I am not a lawyer, that in the event of somebody dieing without making a will the property will go to the children of the deceased, before the wife.

There are a few caveats, it will be difficult to get rid of the wife and her family who will be consolidating their new found assets, and of course the children, presuming they are not Thai, will not be able to own the house and land.

  3. I have found that I have not been able to use my Thai debit card for hotel and car hire bookings, including Thai Visa car hire, made on-line. I have been able to use my debit card to book into hotels but not to rent a car. I have not been able to use my debit card to book theatre or airline tickets on line, and whilst my bank, Kasikorn, does offer a virtual credit card card for use on line, it's no good if you have to show your card before you fly or collect theatre tickets.

Having given up my UK credit card I had to swallow my pride and take on a Thai credit card, difficult but not impossible without a work permit.

  4. I am really not sure why this thread is continuing, there are a number of unnecessary digs and no doubt a bit oh humour, but I will give my take in this brief summary,

girlx took the trouble to organise the meet, which by a cyber show of hands was set for Gullivers. Whilst she took the trouble organise the evening, girlx was unable attend, that was entirely her decision but at least she took the trouble to get it going.

Gullivers was chosen as the venue and everyone will have a view of the establishment. I decided that I would go anywhere so didn't bother to vote, have to say that as I live in Ekkamai it was fine for me being an easy ride on the BTS, though I would have travelled anywhere.

Gullivers itself was fine, it's a big bar and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. On arrival I went to the suggested location, asked the first member of staff I saw and was directed to the correct table, job done.

The company was fine, I was able to meet some interesting and pleasant people who I may not normally have met, so the evening was certainly a success for me.

To sum up, thanks girlx for taking the trouble to organise the evening, just sorry you couldn't make. For those that did turn up, thanks for your company, it was good to meet you I enjoyed myself. For those who did not attend, entirely up to you but I would have liked to have met you. Finally thanks to George for the generous donation, and yes it did go a long way.

That's me done on this thread now.

  5. The Brit Embassy, they are a bunch of self-centered power crazed Civil Servants, paid big money just too piss the Brit expats off. :o

God forbid the day i have any problem here, you will not see them for dust. :D

The staff employed on the desk are locally employed and paid in the region of 30,000 Baht per month, I would hardly call that big money.

You state that they are a bunch of "self-centered power cazed Civil Servants" that may well be your experience, but when I have been there I have always been impressed with the way they deal with people with courtsey and compassion and do their best to help, even faced with the most obnoxious of customers - I am am not suggesting for one minute that you fall into that category.

  6. Most enjoyable evening, not a singlet or pair of shorts in sight. The group consisted of representatives from three continents and had a big age range and included people from various backgrounds who I would not normally have had the the chance to meet. Thanks girlx for making the suggestion and thanks George for the liquid refreshments, a nice gesture and much appreciated.

Looking forward to another meet in the future.

  7. ok now i am really not coming :o

Why don't we all just turn up and enjoy every-bodies company, would seem a shame if it was sunk before it even realy got off the ground.

Come on girlx you have been the driving force behind this, why don't you come along, you never know you might meet some interesting people outside of your usual circle of friends.

  8. Don't accidents happen all over the place. You could have hit another car or a car hit you, I don't see why it is so shocking?

What an awful remark, thankfully you have a minority view. A minority of one I would suggest.

I hope to god you never find yourself in the same position as this family.

  9. I have been given permission to go out on Friday so I will be there, just got to get new shorts and flip flops.

See you all there, it will be good to put faces to names, but as the evening wears on I will forget - it's an age thing.

  10. A Garmin Nuvi works fine. Yes, it probably could work better in the city, but out on the highway it's great. One thing to remember when programming, you can prioritize the fastest or shortest route. This may cause confusion on one's own part. That is, if you are going from Pattaya to Ban Chang (Rayong) and you request the shortest route, the unit will send you down unmarked country roads that cut across the foothills of the mountains. What you probably want is, the highway route, or faster way. The same thing applies while in Bangkok, while you may be going from Asoke to Phayathai, the unit may direct you to the expressway, rather the more direct city street route, depending which mode you are in. Another nice feature while on the highway, the Garmin alerts you to police boxes ahead and possible radar traps. Good luck!

How much are they and where is the best place to get one?

  11. Try Traveltech200, google it.

I used them recently and they got me a business class with Gulf at 63,000, though probably up a tad now but they certainly undercut the Gulf website.

I'm sure that you mean (Reason for Edit: URL Removed as per forum rules).

Yes, that's them, sorry about that.

  12. What a shocking story, this is the first ever post that has brought tears to my eyes. Thank god, or whatever faith you believe in, your beautiful child is making a full recovery. As she is so young hopefully, in time, she will forget what has happened to her. You will obviously never forget that a hand reached out and saved your family.

As for the incompetence of the police and Carrefour staff, well that beggars belief.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

  13. The farang is known to do this sort of thing with remarkable regularity.

This particular farang or farangs in general?

My local shop had sold out of the Bangkok Post today, did the story say if the chap, presume it was a chap, survived the jump or fall?

    Thanks

  14. Yes, Thais are very shy about nakedness, in a sports changing room they never let it show.

We watched a movie last night where in one scene all the guys were in a shower after a basketball game, my gf was absolutely amazed at this.

She wears, nought, just knickers, t-shirt and knickers, t-shirt and no knickers, sexy nightdress, not so sexy nightdress or she might just crash in whatever she has on if we are home particularly late.

I agree that it probably stems from living in one room with her family.

  15. I am just sitting in my condo in Ekkamai and I can see a massive plume of thick black smoke.

It's a job to make out exactly where it is, seems to be south of Sukhumvit, maybe Silom or Sathorn - anyone any idea what's on fire.
