Oh, do what I do: order fresh meat & veggies from Tesco and cook it yourself. Much healthier, no minimum, 30 baht delivery charge. Add a bottle of wine for that special evening. ????

Leaving 400k in the bank for ever will do wonders for the balance sheet of banks but do little to help the local economy, who need it more.
Can the bank not use it for lending in the local economy just like other deposits? Any special restriction? It may be that the bank, assessing creditworthiness, can ensure that the deposit is used more productively than for just paying bar fines and buying bottles of Chang at the 7/11.

One the recurring "issues" here on our beloved forum. Here it is in 2009:
Why Was Thailand Never Colonised ?The reason for the "issue" is merely that we have so many members who don't like the Thai claim that it was never colonized. So what we do is redefine the common, standard, legal sense of the word to prove colonization. Sometimes the spuriousness of the argument is even admitted while insisting it's not spurious:
On 6/16/2019 at 6:02 AM, Somtamnication said:Yes, Thailand was colonized, albeit, not the way we understand colonization to be.
And we'll update our list of colonizers, adding, say, modern-day mainland Chinese. Or, if Thailand wasn't colonized, then it should have been (by Brits of course); or we'll use a Thai-bashing reason or swipe at Immigration--90-day report, work permit, blah blah.
7 pages now, same old thing. Are we close to being done for this round?

It's never worked for me either and I do everything about it correctly, read all the threads. I told the IO in Jomtien it wasn't working for me and he wrote down the URL (same URL) and told me to file there. ????

Yes, but what guarantee would have that it wouldn't be. And even if it weren't imposed then on the spot, what guarantee would you have it wouldn't be in the future? And what if the law were changed to impose blacklisting?
OP was asking for current practice, not future speculations and shit-stirring.

I joined the queue at Da Nang airport. There were three desks in operation: ASEAN; Viets; & others. This latter got quite long (hordes of farangs casing out where to take their pensions?). A smiling official opened another gate and halved this queue.
Was the smiling "official" one of the IOs that normally check passports as we're discussing? "Cattle queue director" is a trivial low-level job much more conducive to a smile.
QuoteI felt welcomed, valued even.
No doubt you did after the simply unspeakable mistreatment you've long suffered in Thailand. Me, I usually feel welcomed to be back in Thailand. ????

So true. What a miserable job. I doubt any of our posters would be smiling while doing that day after day.
16 hours ago, brianbbbb said:fingerprinted at emigration Suvarnabhumi. arrived at emigration yesterday and was fingerprinted by a disgruntled passport officer on arrival right hand left hand and thumbs what a lovely welcome back to Thailand no smiles here now I think the only thing happy to see me here is the mosquito.
How did you know he was "disgruntled" rather than just doing his miserable job?
As noted above, fingerprinting is getting pretty common. Try China: you get fingerprinted when leaving the secure area of the airport as well. Try getting a smile and "Welcome to China" outta those IOs. Or those in Vietnam.
In fact I doubt you're guaranteed any smile and friendliness from the IOs in any country. I got none from the USA recently. Actually I don't see why that would be expected or needed. These aren't the welcoming committee.
However, unlike yourself I often get a smile (slight anyway) from Thai IOs. I do that by giving them a smile first and a cheerful "Sawatdee krab" when I approach and a smile and "Kop kun krab" when my stamped passport is handed back. A little Thai and polite, friendly Thai manners establish that you aren't one of the idiots and really help smooth all your transactions w/ Thais. Mine are invariably pleasant for that reason.
But you probably need to walk down some streets in Pattaya w/ a plethora of massage parlors. Or Soi 6. You'll get all the attention, smiles, and flattery you could possibly want.

Who said..... FREEDOM is when the governments fear the people?
Another irrelevancy. Not your government anyway. Their gov't, their rules, like 'em or not.
QuoteWhinging isn't the same as asking a question that demands an answer
It only "demands" in an answer in your own mind. And it is, because you know you will not only not get an answer but even if you did, you'd merely disagree and propose an alternative comfortable for yourself. The point is, you don't like the requirement regardless of any "reason." Hence, just a whinge.

What and not ask why?
You can of course but why ask why when the purpose is really just to whinge and display one's brilliance by proposing alternative "solutions" to perpetuate the constant "Thais are stupid and irrational" narrative. Same useless hot air filling page after page. Nor does the Thai gov't, like any in the West, regard itself in the least obligated to answer questions it regards as irrelevant or unimportant. Note that the big 3 embassies have given no reason they won't verify income despite being hammered w/ questions from expats. They won't, and that's all there is to it.
Even if your question were answered, you'd merely disagree with reason given and propose some arrangement more comfortable for yourself. In the end you'll follow the law/regs or you'll leave. Whether you do either w/ equanimity is up to you. As Viktor E. Frankl said, the last of human freedoms is to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances. Roll with flow.

Why not? Because mods would have no power to keep order. Would get violent very quickly. Arrests, publicity, fines, deportation, the whole bit.

Last extension, I saw that lady and the younger guy working beside her both browbeaten by this huge German towering over them yelling and insisting they accept his papers. This went on a few minutes. They should have had him taken away, jailed, and fined. Kept saying, "no, no, no" and then the younger guy said, "Go back to your own country!" Idiot finally did leave. THAT impressed me as to what they sometimes must deal with. I was extra nice to the lady when my number was called. It was really a bad, embarrassing scene.

15 hours ago, Thailand Outcast said:"Upping the ante" may have been fine when Thailand was the only place to "play."
No, it was never, ever fine. Go read Ruling out the foreigner (2003), the 17-page granddaddy "killing the goose" bash fest prompted by the news that after many years Thailand would dare raise visa fees. OMG. THIS WAS IT. The teeth gnashing, the hair pulling, the knickers twisting; the ranting, the wailing, the screaming, the anguish, the shock, the accusations of insanity, and of course the dire prophecies! No one would be left to shop in the malls, no one would buy condos, bar girls would disappear, and Thais would all have to return to work in rice paddies. Back to the Stone Age!
Same shit. Meanwhile, Thailand continued growing exponentially.
QuoteNow there are other places to play, that are not so far away, where the ante is a lot less to play the same game, which means more to the player and less to "the house."
Not the same game, as so many posts attest in the regional forums. Moreover, the increase in particular expenses elsewhere may not offset the extra that would be required to stay in Thailand, or not by enough to make moving seem really worthwhile to avoid making a few new changes for TI.
All the other places touted in the neighborhood aren't really comparable to Thailand. Malaysia comes closest and has a retirement program. It's never mentioned. ????
Thailand's not for everyone and never has been. Yet having tried the alternatives, I and many like me will continue to prefer living here and roll with flow. Thailand's a mess, true, but it's an interesting, unique, mostly fun kind of mess if you can adapt. Me, I renewed my visa under the new rules and the process was "smooth as silk."

Hello,
Can you tell me if you are still happy with Hitachi aircon ?
And also inverter ?
I already had an inverter at another place but I have never seen any decrease of my bills, so are you sure that all inverters use less juice ?
The only great point is to be able to eat under the outside unit and almost do not hear it.
Thanks.
Time flies. Four years on and mine's still working great. Serviced regularly by Numchai, no problems. Seems quiet enough, but I don't eat outside under it, so YMMV. My electric bill went down substantially 'cause it replaced an ancient "crappy no-name thingy." Perhaps an inverter would do even better but of course they do cost more and you may read various opinions about inverters in previous forum threads.
Numchai will always recommend Daikin or Mitsubishi but the sale I found when I was in dire need was on Hitachis at HomePro. Maybe they are better, even probably, but again you can always find disgruntled purchasers here.

But they do not surround us. That is the whole point.
As has been said, Thais are also individuals. My own gf has all of her life been curious not so much about current events in other parts of the world but certainly about other cultures. She's always known Elvis and The Beatles and can name several songs by U2 she likes. She's formally studied both Marketing and English lit and she's well-traveled in Europe. In farangland, I had gfs who were interested in current events but then had their own spin on them that merely led to arguments. Me, I'm glad to be away from the feminazis.
But I don't see a "right and wrong" here in typical TVF judgmental binary thinking. I don't see how being incurious about matters that don't directly affect one is all the different from the sentiment expressed in The Serenity Prayer. On the other hand, farangs are often most incurious about things that Thais regard as of interest and may well be useful to know about for a more successful adaptation to their adopted country. Lack of helpful Thai attitude explains why so many of our posters are plagued by the hideous brain-eating Whither Thailand? and Whither Pattaya? space monkeys. Once they invade, the only cure is leave Thailand to regain happiness.

Actually I'm sure some new troll is. The reason it sounds wrong is the OP is talking about "incurious." By making the mistake of saying his wife is "bright," an idea so many posters can't accept in Thais, he left himself open to the expected bashing.

Sure gas attacks should be punished but had this happened in an African country without oil and or oil infrastructure nothing would have happened.
A bit overly simplistic. In general without potential (here conferred by oil revenues) to threaten our friends and the USA, without using WMD, and with no effort or ability by the official gov't to do anything themselves (on the contrary here, as it was the official gov't perpetrating the crime).

Since it became commonly realized years ago that this behavior is permissible and crashing a motorcyclist will go unpunished, the "festival" has attracted an even higher percentage of sadists and potential murderers. They live for this kind of thing.

Finger pointing scenes are staged for the TVF trollertariat who love to point fingers at finger pointing scenes. Leads to many more page views and clicks. I can say no more.

The Mrs, and also her folks, like to have a lot of useless stuff laying around the house that makes it look a tad clattered, but the houses are cleaned everyday. Whereas back home, nowhere near as much stuff laying about the place, but by no means was the place cleaned as often.
We just added a storage space when we built the outdoor kitchen, so now inside is a win win.It all depends. Most Thais I've known have been pretty neat and clean. Sometimes housekeepers help with that.
Back home I have some friends fanatically neat & clean while others practically live in a pig sty. The older they are, though, the more junk they've accumulated. I can hardly turn around in one friend's house w/o knocking over something. Open the drawers and closets of some of the neatest and there you'll find a big mess--the neatness is only outward. :) As some poster has said, Westerners have more non-family guests over.

I checked carefully before posting. ???? My motivation: not long ago the responses to an appeal from some Jomtien noob about how to transport himself to Tesco made me think (perhaps wrongly) that a lot of Jomtien dwellers aren't taking advantage of online ordering when it would seem logical do so. Give it a try if you haven't.
