  1. From that article:

However, if Immigration Police suspect an individual to be overstaying in Thailand or being involved in illegal activity, then the individual would be required to produce their original passport promptly.

Deputy Commander Voravat referred to Section 58, which reads as follows:

Any alien who has no lawful document for entering the Kingdom under section 12(1);....under this Act; and has no identification in accordance with the Law on Alien registration, is considered to have entered the Kingdom in violation of the Act.

Entering or staying in Thailand without holding a valid passport and visa/extension is subject a fine and possible prison sentence.

    ..........

“But if we think a foreigner is involved in illegal activity then we will of course need to see their original passport, this is normal”, said Deputy Commander Voravat.

    .............

However, it is always a good idea to have a copy of your passport with you at all times while in Thailand.

Agreed, a copy is a good idea to have at all times (including the departure card where applicable). It's the fact that these people were arrested for not having their *original* on them whilst out on Walking Street that is annoying everyone. If the police had requested they produce their original at the station then people would understand - that makes sense, but to have the original on you, whilst out drinking in an area that will have a high risk of pick-pockets and such, is just silly, and the official statement above acknowledges that.

  2. Please be careful what you post regarding having to carry your passport on you. According to Thai law, you are required to prove you are in the country legally. Thai citizens have to carry their ID at all times. For us, sometimes, a driver's license is OK. Other times, a copy of your passport is fine. But if the officer on the scene decides they want to see your visa stamp, and you don't have your passport, you "could" be fined or taken to jail. As indicated in this article.

Just because you've been here a long time and never had to produce it doesn't mean it's not a requirement. And posting information like this can cause confusion.

It's up to you. Carry it or not. I don't ,but I accept the risk and can get my passport if needed very quickly. People are fined and do get hauled into jail if they don't have their passport on them. Just depends on the situation, the officer on the scene, the position of the sun, moon, stars, etc.

Several posts saying this is not a requirement have been removed from view and future ones will also be removed from view without notice. It's not fair to those new to Thailand to read comments like this and potentially get into trouble. Hope you understand. And yes, Thai officials do make confusing and contradictory statements. Welcome to Thailand.

People say it's not a requirement because ThaiVisa itself asked the police and got an official statement saying it wasn't a requirement to have the original on you at all times. What's the point of getting an official statement from the police if it means nothing? If that's the case, ThaiVisa should have never published the statement.

If the policy has changed, fair enough - perhaps ThaiVisa can, on behalf of its posters, get an updated statement to clarify the issue?

  3. How does a 22 year old guy of this size get the crap beat out of him by a Tuk Tuk driver?

Come on it's not hard to imagine. a) he was likely drunk (since it was from Bangla), and B) since his arm is pretty badly damaged I'll go out on a limb and say it involved a weapon, like a pipe/crowbar.

  4. Whoever paid 300 baht even for such a short trip must be out of his mind.

Minimum price in Patong for a Tuk Tuk to even switch on the engine and roll 100m.

Not really, usually 200 baht from Nanai to Bangla, have done it a few times from Don's BBQ. I'm guessing 300 baht could be a "night time" / "drunken farang" price.

  5. Hey,

My education visa is at an end and I've got a month or two left on my rent, so I wouldn't mind sticking around since it's the high season.

Will there be any issue making a quick trip to a surrounding country and coming back in on a tourist exempt (British), then extending for 30 days? Or will they see the previous ED visas (1.5yrs), previous exempt stamps (used to visit for short trips fairly often prior to the ED visa) and think something dodgy, given the current attitudes and changes to tourist visas etc? Would I be better going to a consulate and getting a single entry tourist visa? (more hassle/money, but safer?)

    Maybe I'm overthinking it :)

  6. certificate of residence needed first done downstairs

"notification" of residence, not "certificate". Confusingly they're different things and not the same, I found out the hard way but luckily had the papers needed so I could go downstairs and get the right one. They won't even let you submit your documents if you don't have the correct one ('notification' is a small slip but in the back of your passport).

  7. Hey,

I need to go to Phuket Town immigration soon for my ED Visa extension, but my school are saying I first need to make sure my passport has the "notification of residence" in it since I changed address since last went to immigration.

I know the owner of the house/condo etc is supposed to register you, but mine doesn't really know what to do and if I have the signed documents needed I can go do it myself.

So I know I can do it at Phuket Town immigration (did that last year), but since I'm in Patong the question is, can I do it at the immigration office here as well? I know they usually only deal with tourist/short term visas and such, but since they do 90 day reporting I'm wondering if their system can also register my residence details.

  8. Don't have first hand experience of investor schemes, just the path to PR as a foreign employee. For me it was a case of waiting around 2 years minimum (people recommended 3) and then hoping there are enough "slots" available for that year's quota (which horribly from comments can even be influenced by ethnicity/race). In the end I didn't bother as I had to decide whether to stay another year or two, or move elsewhere.

You mention you didn't want to start a business, but what about hiring someone to run one? I think it boils down to investing money in the country long-term, either crazy amounts (S$2.5m for GIP etc?) or working there/owning a business and paying your taxes for a few years and hoping for the best (though pretty sure P1 level salaries would be welcomed).

It's a lovely country, very clean and peaceful, but also very expensive in expat areas. Was also a bit boring for me.

  9. I think it also varies depending on location. One (well known) language school in Bangkok said as of the new regulations (last August/Sept) that the most you can do there is 1.5yrs, essentially 6 months per level (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced). My school in Phuket has also stated the exact same thing and ties up with my current schedule (I finished my first course and just took the Beginner test at Ministry of Education to allow me to apply for my 2nd ED Visa and move onto the Intermediate level). Apparently in Pattaya they didn't follow these latest regulations and kept to their own so you can do 3yrs.

One of the teachers explained to me that it's essentially max 3 visas - so if the local government lets you extend (every 3 months) after each visa to make 1yr total, then you have 3yrs overall (like Pattaya if that's still the case), or if its only 6 months then you only have 1.5yrs (Phuket/Bangkok). This also makes sense as for one of my fellow students who got his first visa and extension for 1yr (before the changes), but the last two visas he can apply for will follow new regulations and just cover 6 months each (3 month visa, 3 month extension).

  10. I think the type of aircon can make a huge difference. My previous condo was some crappy old one that I'd use maybe 7-8 hours a day (never at night), and with just a TV, fridge, stove, hot-water etc it'd be easily 3000B/month. The newer 'inverters' are much more efficient and probably save a lot in the long run.

  11. Yeah Kathu has some nice condos (and cheaper) but I want to be this side of the hill and close to Jungceylon (generally means I can walk to most places instead of renting a bike). Phuket Villa condos are relatively new, and has a pool and gym, so I'm trying to find owners there that are renting out.

  12. Sorry if wrong forum, this is for Patong so I figured most relevant.

I'm looking for condos around Patong to rent for 6-12 months. It's incredibly hard to search google due to the sheer number of SEO sites directing to one or two big name projects, so struggling to find an index/directory with recent listings. I figured it may be easier to just ask on here in case anyone knows anyone renting or a good website to use.

Aiming for around 20-25k with a/c, pool, internet (not shared wifi) - if anyone knows any websites or people renting, please let me know.

    Thanks.

  13. Yes you need to really think about how you want the site to progress going forward. It's cheap to make 4 static pages if you don't need them updated, but as soon as you cross into dynamic/e-commerce solutions it is going to seriously increase the cost as there are so many variables to consider. Then it's a case of how much of the effort you want to put in (content) vs the designer (management) etc.

Also remember there may be conditions attached to cheap site builds. If the designer is doing the hosting/domain as well, they may not allow you access to make changes yourself, forcing you to go back to them for any changes (which may be more expensive in the long run). So also think about it as two/three parts, 1) the design, and 2) the hosting 3) domain name. Ideally you want some level of control over each so that you can easily move each aspect to a different provider for whatever reason, without incurring hefty hidden costs.

  14. Actually, it was turn left out of Bangla, but, it could be gone by now.

I think I found the one you mean - just a few shops over from the end of Bangla (just before No6 restaurant)?

They had lots of piping, but not a complete hose-pipe I could attach to a tap, and I couldn't find the components to DIY nor could I explain it to the lady in the shop, so think I'll have to try and find one that is pre-made.

Basically looking for something like this:
